"He's pretty observant," Toby agreed. Also he had been with Toby for the majority of his young life. They knew each other more intimately than most siblings, let alone buddies.
"I honestly thought you were running away because I rejected you." Even his sympathetic, begging for forgiveness face was somehow boyishly handsome. Then he nodded. "Good. I don't know if I could handle it again."
Wait, wait. If they just broke up like a normal couple he'd be fine, should he remind her about that? Did she have fears to allay? He wasn't sure, so he erred on the side of caution and didn't say anything else.

"No," Maia shook her head. "I expected you to. Selkie love and all that," She did loom upward at that, pausing. She turned back to face him. "But Dari said you weren't budging and I had to become unattainable. If I'd known it'd hurt you, I wouldn't have agreed to it." She moved to lean against his chest. "It was like hell, being there."

Toby decided to not mention that he hadn't been exactly lonely at any time after a while. Selkie love had been a concern, but in hindsight it seemed silly.
"No, I'm glad it hurt. It needed to hurt. If it was easy I just would have gone about my day and forgotten, and I don't ever want to forget. Not now." He smiled down at her. "I'm just sorry you had to hurt in the process."

It would've hurt either way. If she'd stayed, if she'd left. She kissed his cheek. "It was worth it," She said. "This, being here with you, nothing compares to it. I've never been so happy. I--" no, it was too soon. "I'm glad we can be together."

Toby's hand lingered at Maia's cheek and then mired slightly in her hair as he leaned forward for a soft kiss. "Me too." His voice was gentle and full of emotion.

Maia leaned in to kiss him again. So much for stars, she thought. Toby was so much more interesting; the crinkles around his eyes when he smiled, everything about him seemed new.
"I thought things would go back to normal when I came home, she said. "They've gotten so much better." She fell silent after that, just enjoying being there with him.

Toby agreed but wasn't sure what to say. All it took was an agreement on arbitrary titles and they'd become a couple where kissing and touching were more than common. Instead of speaking he stole another kiss and pulled Maia to him.
"I'm falling for you, Maia."

Falling for her? Maia snuggled against him. "I fell for you a while ago," she said, not specifying. She smiled hugely though, and did not attempt to hide it.
He was falling for her. And they were together, and the past two days had been so wonderful, It was hard to describe in words. "I love you," she said, looking up at him.

Toby took a sudden breath and his expression went slightly soft. She loved him? He stroked her cheekbone with his thumb.
"I love you too, Maia. I realized that while you were gone. I do."

Before Maia could register that Toby had used the present tense "falling" before saying he loved her which meant he'd fallen, she moved to kiss him. It didn't matter, tenses didn't matter, English didn't matter, they were together.

Toby returned the kiss enthusiastically, deepening it slightly. Love. Dear god, how long has he been looking for love? Who knew he would find it in an entity whose case he was put on? There was so much to speak against it, but love was love. You couldn't deny that.

Maia let the kiss continue. He loved her! Wonders above, even in her wildest dreams she hadn't expected how wonderful this feeling was. She wrapped her arms around him.

He wrapped his arms around her as well and continued with deep kisses, albeit nothing tongue-y lest he scare his inexperienced love away. He could stay like this for days; forever, if he could. His hand explored the curves of her body, exploring her waist and back in ways a hug didn't allow. She felt so different now, was that possible?

Maia continued with the kisses, only pausing to taking a breath. This was nice. Could this last forever? Or maybe the weekend? Work got in the way of forever... She wasn't altogether sure what to do with her hands, but she did initiate another kiss.

Toby thought that Maia might be finished until she initiated another kiss. He was beginning to grow warm and to feel little stirrings in his gut. It was so different when it meant something, wasn't it?
The two were out there for quite some time. It was Toby who terminated the kissing to save his own dignity lest he get too worked-up and do something he might regret. Besides, it was love. That wasn't going to go away overnight.
The next day they found themselves at the lake again, and it was even less crowded than usual. The weather was especially cool, but it was enough to turn away some of the tourists and even the regulars.
