There's certainly a lot to choose from, and different players or shop owners have varying takes on what's acceptable. The local store owner liked my idea of running an Imperial Guard army of Lizardmen using their Fantasy models as a base. Apparently at some point in time the Lizardmen had a mentioning in 40k, but I guess they were discontinued.
The Necrons are sort of cool. I've seen one or two people use them as a dedicated force. Being able to come back after being killed is very annoying, it's true. I saw in a squad-styled game a dude with a few Necrons hold off wave after wave of undead.

Yeah, his Hero guy had an orb that just brought them back.
It was like a 1000 pt Army or something, and I just couldn't keep those assholes down.
Then I got deep striked and a giant tower thing murdered me.

That sounds just like the Necron when we play DoW.

Oh yeah. Their obelisks or whatever? Those things are particularly annoying. I'm pretty sure when it comes to Necrons its one of those armies where every round counts against you. You probably have to hit them as fast and hard as you can.
Not like Tyranids. I wouldn't touch those ******** with a ten foot pole. I'll hang back in my trenches and try bombing them, thanks.

I used my guys speed to get in and kill a lot of those 'Destroyer' heavy weapons, but I couldn't get the hell out of the way of the little dudes with guns.
Eldar are apparently fragile as hell, cause I just charged in and regretted it early and often. I started picking up the hit and run tactics at the end, but I got murdered by a tower of death before I could do a real offense.

In a nutshell, Eldar are specialist units, and fragile. They rely on a lot of speed.
Necrons are just plain gay.

Necron was very plain.
Lots of identical looking guys, hell, even the tanks had the 'face' thing on it.

Speaking of DoW. We should play again.
That, and Sins of a Solar Empire. And some other games.

Necrons are meant to be more or less uniform.

I think I am gonna probably end up going Imperial Guard.
I just wish they had The Death Korps of Kreig type models.

Oh, yeah. Those guys are super cool. It's really gay that they don't have the models for them readily available. You can do a pretty good crossover if you use uh... either Shocktrooper or FIST troops, but its incredibly expensive. It would cost you like over 1500$ to create a basic functioning IG army of Krieg Korps.
Which is hilarious, because, in-game they're clones. You'd think they'd be pretty cheap.
