"I was worried about you last time." So worried she'd called Dari to hear whether Toby was alright.
The day went without incident, and turned into night. Once home, Maia gathered blankets into a pile and set them outside before going to seek Toby out. "Come see the stars with me," she invited, reaching for his hand. It would be a little cooler than they were used to, but it was nothing compared to Oregon. "We haven't in ages."

"Hm?" Toby let Maia take his hand, stood and started after her. He turned back to Dari. Was this weird? Did he want to come? Dari shook his head and waved his hand. No, go ahead. They shared a smile and then Toby was off. Honestly he was excited to go stargazing again, even as simple as it was. He had missed this. He had missed Maia. He had missed all of this.
They crossed outside into the cool air and Toby looked upward. Ah, hello again. Thank you for your help in deciding to call Maia.

Maia only let go of Toby's hand once they were outside, and that was only to spread out the blanket. She folded one so it was like a long pillow. "Talking about the full moon reminded me of the first time we watched the stars together," Maia explained.

Toby sighed.
"I'm sorry I was so stubborn." He laid down and opened his arms for Maia. Oh, this was so much better than the pillow he had tried his damndest to not wake up wrapped around.
Those words threatened at the back of his lips. He forced them away.

Maia turned to frown at him slightly. "You weren't that stubborn," she corrected him. "And it was all perfectly reasonable." He'd been afraid. And he had brought up selkie love when she'd spoke of feelings for him.
She scooted into his arms. "I'm glad you decided to change your mind," she added. "Everything's better now."

"I did have feelings for you. I had for a long time." There was a pause. "I was afraid." It came out laced with audible shame and he looked downward a moment. Oh well. It was over now. He shook his head to clear it and pulled Maia closer, kissing her ear.
"I missed you a lot. I missed all of this too."

"I was afraid too," Maia admitted, after a long moment. She'd been afraid of the tendency to leave one's love behind. Of hurting him. "I missed you, too." So much.
"I was so glad to hear your voice at four am," She gave him a small smile. "Don't try waking me up then again though, I think I like sleeping in."

"Really? What happened to 4-am-every-day Maia?" Toby teased. His grin was audible. He squeezed her closer for just a moment. "You had me up early every day."

"It's easier to sleep in when I'm next to you," Maia smiled at him. His warmth definitely inspired a feeling of laziness. "Well, we can't waste the day away, but what's another hour?" She turned her eyes to the sky. "I see the heart you made," she pointed it out.

"Yeah?" Toby craned his neck to look over her for her phone, but she didn't have it. To him it was just stars, but she remembered their constellations by sight? He smiled again and patted Maia's belly.
"Turn over."
He wanted to see her face.

Maia turned over, smiling at him. "I didn't have all of our constellations saved to my app," she said. In fact, she had exactly none. She'd stopped using it when she'd left.
Was she boring him?

No, she wasn't boring him. She was just more interesting than the stars at the moment. He was smiling softly as he looked into her deep chocolate eyes, then brushed the hair from her face.
"You're covered in constellations," he said.

"Me?" Maia seemed surprised, and then caught on. Oh. Freckles. She gave him a quick kiss. "I never thought of it that way."

"Mmhm. Right here." He drew a gentle fingertip slowly in a shape around her cheek. "You have a seal. We should have known just looking at you." Of course her freckles were so numerous it'd be hard to not find shapes. "Oh, and look." Another shape. "A star."
