Nariko: The Rennaissance (I don't know how to spell it either, razz ) was very interesting, but, sadly, we never got into it that much last year. Or the year before that. I actually don't remember getting into it much in any of my past History classes. Maybe I will later. Hopefully.

I'll definitely check that movie out, although I might've seen it already and never knew the name...I do that all the time with movies razz .

Thulie: Victorian style dresses and housing was absolutely beautiful! I know, it's old and everything, but I can't get over it's beauty. And I love how they decorated houses and stuff. I've always thought they were very nice looking. o.O Uh, steampunk? I don't think I know what you're talking about...

Blanc: Haha yeah. People now don't do it too much anymore, though. We've grown up just a tad. Or, at least, most of the girls have...-glares at the immaturity that is sophomore boys-

Yeah! The music was so upbeat and happy in the 20s, it's awesome! And in the 60s, there was the hippie movement and everything. I may not be a hippie, but I do admire their quest for world peace. It's the constant drug abuse that I didn't agree with.

Mythology has been an interest of mine for a while, but...I have to say, when we were forced to read parts of The Odessey in English class last year, I was bored to tears. I'm sorry, but just reading them out of a book is terribly boring. Now DISCUSSING them is interesting. I'd love to be able to take a class where we learn interactively (where the teacher tells us everything) instead of having to read the books and do questions on them. I barely passed that part of the exam last year.

Ooh, the Great Depression was another of my favorite subjects to study. Dang...why is it that all the horrible things that happened to America in the past have to be so damn interesting? But yes, the gangsters WERE interesting as well. We did a big thing on Al Capone...when our teacher told us that he FINALLY got arrested...for not paying his taxes...I swear, every mouth in that room was like :O.

Kineka: Just look up steampunk on deviantart or on google. Another good example is Disney's movie Treasure Planet.
I love the jazz music. Billie Holiday has become one of my absolute favorite artists. I love hippies. I consider myself to be the non-drug using hippie. I don't mind drugs. I think it's a personal choice and it is stupid. I won't say that I'll never do drugs. I might try it once sometime in my life, but I may not.
Thankfully I had a teacher who loved to discuss the Odessey. I loved that book. We also watched Hercules and got to write a report on the differences in the actual mythology from Disney's version.
I know really! That's why I'm so excited for US/State history. I just hope I get one of the better teachers. I had the exact same reaction! There is this movie, about Al Capone I think, called the Untouchables. My dad told me it was really good.

Kineka: Have you ever seen the movie Howl's Moving Castle? thats sort of steampunk smile
PostPosted: Wed Jul 22, 2009 7:12 pm

Blanc: Okay. I've never seen that movie.

Jazz wasn't always my style, but I got into it when my teacher kept playing it for us during class. It's got a good beat, very danceable.

Hippies are indeed awesome people, I just didn't like the drug thing. But yeah, it's a choice, and I feel I shouldn't be associating with people who make such poor choices and have so little free will. I can safely say I'll never do them. They never appealed to me, really. I've seen the effects, and it's just disgusting.

My teacher kind of discussed it a little bit, then assigned us pages to read and questions to answer. Then the next day, we'd go over the reading (and since I couldn't pay attention because I was so bored, he put it into perspective and I actually KNEW what was going on) and the questions, then he'd assign more. But, knowing our class, we got off-subject a lot, so a lot of the time we never even got to the homework. Hercules is awesome, but I haven't watched it in forever. But that would've been a better assignment than doing a 3 page "Odessey" (long journey) of your own. I did mine, totally made up, about me going from New York to Hollywood and meeting Johnny Depp smile . I got an A, so I'm not complaining.

Our teachers are usually pretty good. But I have World History next year...and it's AP, so there'll probably be a lot of essays...I think after next year, I'll be coming here with new information fresh from the library...

Untouchables...never heard of it. I'll add that to my list as well! The only history related movies I've ever seen are The Patriot, Glory, Saving Private Ryan, and Forrest Gump. Oh and if Pocahontas counts...and Hercules...or any of those other cartoon history related Disney movies.

Thulie: So sorry, didn't see your post! And no, I've never heard of it...can you see I'm sort of out of the loop when it comes to movies (other than HP, of course wink )?

Kineka:Its ok smile I was going to show you pictures but none of them really describe steampunk haha. Its like Victorian meets technology biggrin if you get what i mean.

i totally go the opposite way from you guys >.< Im not a big fan of the hippies and their time. Im not a big fan of the whole peace thing on everything. I Do think that the world should be able to get along,i dont think we need drugs to achieve that effect. I am totally against drugs, and dont generally get along with anyone who does them. I know that makes me sound narrow minded, but i tend to get in very heated discussions over it lol.

Thulie: That's okay smile . I can look them up.

Yeah. "Can't we all just get along?" -Some person biggrin . I have no clue who quoted that...except I know Elmo did in an interview razz . I know, I'm a nerd. Anyway! We're actually kind of on the same wavelength. I don't normally get along with drug users either, mostly because they're so doped up they can't even hold a decent conversation. I mean, there's a reason they call it dope, because it makes you look and act like one. I don't believe in using drugs to achieve peace. But I love their take on "Violence isn't the answer". I mean, it's not. It just makes things worse, if you think about it. Sometimes I really admire the hippies and what they tried to achieve. Now, if they had rehab back then and they were all sober, maybe we would all be hippies! That would be awesome!

I love the Renaissance, especially the clothes! heart

thuleumbar, welcome to Ravenclaw! whee

Blanc, the only reason people have to ask an HoH or LHH to start an RP is so the mods can be sure It’s structured well. I looked at it, and it’s okay. I’ll give you permission as long as you add a few more rules.
1) Put a specific limit on the number of canon characters and OCs that a single person can play.
2) Explain that characters can only be played by the player that chose them, but all unselected characters can be used by anyone.
3) Start all posts with “Date, Time, Place.” After all, if someone is posting as somebody in the Gryffindor common room, and right below them someone posts as a student in the Slytherin common room, it could get confusing unless posts all begin with that type of explanation.

Minerva: Yeah, I'm not saying nothing will happen, I think SOMETHING will, but this whole Y2K thing is really annoying sometimes. I mean, the Mayan calender also said that in 2000, all the computers were going to shut down, and did they? No. And how they "predicted" 9/11...I mean, how is that even possible? They must've had something to do with the terrorists then if they somehow KNEW it was going to happen. Or it was just a lucky guess. I'm kind of thinking that if they're so keen on all of us dying, then they might just have something to do with it. They might somehow cause it themselves, not just go by their calenders. Just my opinion.

No, that wasn’t the Mayans that said that. It was modern scientists at the time. You were really young when it happened, so you probably don’t remember the details. Because computers recalled everything from passed years with two numbers instead of four (For example, 98 instead of 1998.) they thought that in the year 2000 when it registered the date as “00” all of the computers worldwide would shut down, which would effect traffic lights, hospital monitors, and everything.

I don’t know anything about the Mayan’s predicting 9/11 but they DID predict the atom bomb. There are two astrix-like symbols the same year that the two atom bombs were dropped on Japan. On their calendar in 2012 there is that same symbol and then NOTHING after that. Scary stuff.

Nostradamus said that the third world war would start with the New World and the Middle-East. Everyone knows that the New World is the American continents, right? The New World wasn’t discovered by Europeans until many years AFTER Nostradamus existed, so how could he possibly know that term? He made several predictions like that. For example, he predicted that a powerful French leader would be exiled to Elba. He didn’t use Napoleon’s name, but he did use Elba’s name in the prediction, and that island hadn’t been discovered in his lifetime either. He must’ve known what he was talking about when he predicted the future. Can you tell I did a research project on him for school once? lol

So, it’s not just ridiculous superstition for people like me that think something drastic is going to happen in 2012. Maybe we’ll all blow ourselves up in a nuclear war. Maybe we’ll make contact with aliens from outer-space. I don’t know, but I DO know that it’ll be huge. If no one else believes it, though, then I'm not offended. I’m content to be the Luna of Ravenclaw that everyone thinks is mad. I love Luna anyway! 4laugh

Wow Very Very Impressive. I Love It biggrin
And Thank You,i find it to be an honor to be in such a house as ravenclaw. Us witty and clever people all together could cause something fun biggrin
PostPosted: Wed Jul 22, 2009 7:59 pm

Minerva: Oh...hehe, sorry sweatdrop . But that seems kind of stupid, if you ask me. I mean...it's really obvious that the year 2000 will go by the year "00". Just because there are 2 zeros in the date doesn't mean the world's going to end! Did they even do research on it, or just said "That's that and have a nice day"?

People in my history class were saying that they "supposedly" predicted 9/11, but I still think that, if they did, they would've had an inner source...from the terrorists, most likely. Terrorists don't really plan things, they just act on a whim. How could anyone have predicted that?

Well, I think that maybe the Mayans (being very considerably old since they first started) thought that 2012 would be enough, or that maybe they would've all died off after that. And, whatever happened to, I don't know, making more? Like, more years to the calendar? I'm sorry if I sound naive right now, but that just seems like common sense. I mean, they can just add another 2000 years to their calendar...it's THEIRS, they can do what they want with it.

o.O Wow. Um, yes, I see you did a project on this. But I have no idea what you're even talking about, so I don't really think I can comment.

You're not mad! Neither is Luna, actually. You're just...gifted smile . But I'm just kind of that young person that has stuff I wanna do before I die, and to know that in about 3 years time, I'll be dead...it's just kind of hard for me to grasp, I guess. Now my parents, on the other hand, think differently. They're basically like "Well, if it happens, it was meant to happen. Oh well, Earth sucked anyway." It kind of scares me how calm they are about this whole thing...

Kineka: I love all styles of music (:
I've seen the bad effects of drugs and I've seen the humorus. I have friends who do drugs and they don't influence me to do them. I have friends who have more morals then most people. They don't usually get along to well, but they can.
I think any paper discussing Johnny Depp is worthy of an 'A'. But then again, so does most of the world...
I love Forrest Gump! I cry everytime I see that movie heart One of my favorites (: I count Pocahontas and Hercules! Disney doesn't know the word 'accuracy', but I don't care.

Thulie: I agree with you on the not needing drugs to get people to get along. I try to get along with people regardless of their lifestyles. It's silly to try and get along with everyone, but I have a wide aray of friends who I care about more than anything. Some do drugs on a daily basis and I worry for them. I'm not a religious person, but I've found myself praying for them often. Okay, I take back what I said about maybe trying some drug at least once. I don't think I will ever do drugs.

Blanc: I'm pretty open to music too, but my step-dad listens to jazz, classical, and easy listening all the time, I'm really getting tired of it.

I don't care about people influencing me, I know they won't (people don't care anymore...the 90s are over). I'm just concerned that they're throwing their own life away, and just making their remaining time here miserable. They may not feel it at the time, but it does catch up with them. I know, I've seen it personally. And on Intervention smile . Good show.

Well, it wasn't really DISCUSSING him, I just said I went to a premiere of...I think Pirates 4 or something (I made it up), and we got free backstage passes and went to meet and have lunch with him. Then he gave us his cell number. That was pretty much it. I was gushing for most of the 3rd page...and I still passed...o.o.

I know! It's so sad at the end! Poor Jenny...and Forrest...Lol yeah, my 5th grade teacher said that John Smith isn't supposed to be ungodly cute...

Minerva: That makes sense. Thank you and I just added those rules (:
There is a possibility that something will happen. I agree with you when you say it will be huge. I plan on living my life as I would anyday. I'm not going to think of 2012 until it's here. Sometimes, it's just better to think and live in the present.

Kineka: My mom thinks that I'll get influenced into hard drugs and I know I won't. I agree that people haven't done that since the 90s and early 2000s (that little comment made me giggle). As the commercial says, life above the influence. I've never seen Intervention, but I'll make a note to watch it.
Oh, well even mentioning him is good. I think I might really really like your story...
I know! Jenny went through pretty much everything in that movie. Poor Forrest. Now I really want to watch that movie. haha Disney does give every girl unrealistic expectations in men. Well, at least for me.
PostPosted: Wed Jul 22, 2009 8:25 pm

OH MY GOD, GUYS! With this post I am...a 5TH YEAR! Woo! -throws confetti-

Blanc: Yeah, living in the present is always the best thing right now, but it's kind of hard NOT to think about the future, isn't it? I'm always thinking about having kids and getting married...but not in that order, of course razz . It's just this thing with me.

Yeah I mean, people don't influence you to do drugs anymore! Yeah, they still do them, but they don't tell you if you don't, you're not "cool" or whatever. Intervention is about people who are drug addicts, alcoholics, and obsessive eaters, and they go through changing their lives.

Haha if I can find it again, I could send it to you. I must warn you, it was very rushed because I did it in two nights razz .

Yeah. ForrestxJenny = heart . I don't think there was a dry eye in the house when we watched it in school and the end part, where Forrest Jr. was going off to school and Forrest Sr. was sitting there with the feather...that was sad...and yeah, I've noticed that in all the Disney Princess movies, the girl ALWAYS gets a cute guy. But in real life, Pocahontas liked kind of an ugly, older guy...I guess they can't put that in a kids movie, huh?

Kineka: Congrats! I'm fifteen posts short of becoming a 3rd year, but then again I'm still placed as a first year...
I know what you mean. I generally think of those things when I'm daydreaming and whatnot.
Obsessive eaters? Sounds like Intervention is as epic as shark week. I need to look that show up.
All the best reports were rushed. Some people just work better under pressure.
We never got to finish it when we watched it in school. We got to the part where Forrest decides to go into the shrimping business. I watched the entire movie when I got home though whee heart
Yeah it's like that a lot. Then again there are the other Disney movies like Aristocats, The Rescuers, and Hunchback of Notre Dame where the 'normal' guy gets the beautiful girl. True for Hunchback Esmeralda didn't choose Quasi, but he got a girl eventually (a crappy sequal :/). The Rescuers, they were mice so they were already cute. Ah well, I guess Disney just goes with whatever pleases the eye.
