94 Or Japan's, for that matter. I remember a quote of Churchill about monarchies, and he said it in April 26, 1946: "If the Allies at the peace table at Versailles had allowed a Hohenzollern, a Wittelsbach and a Habsburg to return to their thrones, there would have been no Hitler. A democratic basis of society might have been preserved by a crowned Weimar in contact with the victorious Allies."
Hohenzollern = Prussia Wittelsbach = Bavaria Habsburg = Austria-Hungary

Boy you got me wanting more, more, more! Give it all up for love, babe! 100 4laugh They must not be as publicized as the British royal family. Maybe they are all hiding away, angry at their lost power and the collapse of their empires. xp

Boy you got me wanting more, more, more! Give it all up for love, babe! 52 The Hapsburg sure fell far. They used to dominate or control most of Europe, but now they've pretty much disappeared. confused

54 In any case, General McArthur succeeded in saving the Japanese imperial system. Asides from the fact that it's a source of national identity, he also took the lesson of what happened in Europe after World War I. If anything, his actions are reminiscent of Chruchill's quote.

58 Had General McArthur have not done that, then we'd see someone like Hitler going up in Asia.

62 In a lot of cases, yes. A constitutional monarchical system is the type of political system where the monarch is apolitical and yet denies certain powers from politicians so that the latter would not get too much power. Had the sultanates in the island of Mindanao had not fallen to the Americans through either force of arms or force of government, then there would be sub-national sultanates in the Philippines.

Boy you got me wanting more, more, more! Give it all up for love, babe! 64 I can agree with that. 3nodding Canada kind of has a thing like that with Queen Elizabeth, since she can technically disband Parliament, but that power is rarely used. I think that an absolute monarchy would work, just like a dictatorship, if the ruler was a benevolent one who actually did things for the people. That way they would be able to do it effectively based on the government type. biggrin
