Though Little Guy was struck by the nickname as a bit annoying, he simply nodded in response and leaped into the air, catching a rare breeze through the shady forest that carried him into a nice, steady glide. Thanks to the Totodile's much slower pace, it was easy to keep up to the point that he could make long, ovalish circles overhead as he kept his eye out for potential dangers in the woods.

After a few minutes, he flew next to Ulani, giving a soft bird-equivalent sigh:

"I wish I knew where he's taking us,
but I guess we don't have many choices.
Following him will keep down the fuss,
but keep an ear out for our trainers' voices."

---

"M.A.!" Ky called into the distance, as loud as he could.

"Okay class, what is rule #1 of safe training?" Ky's teacher once asked. Clearly in his thoughts, Ky could hear the class respond cutely, "Never, ever, never-ever, go out into the wild without a Pokemon by your side."

"M.A.!" Ky called out again, a little less forcefully. This was silly. Ky had to admit that, even as much as he wanted to follow, he was scared of his noticeable handicap. Sting was out, and he had sent Little Guy on ahead without thinking it through. Now he was stuck with this brat, Pokemon-less, and without any sense of security that M.A. was okay.

When he looked over at Ray, he could see that Ray was looking off in the same direction, probably worried for his brother. In a sense, he was Pokemon-less too, with his Gloom badly burnt and his Zubat close to fainting. But, unlike Ky, in a few moments he had his solution yanked out of his pocket and held in his hand.

With a very calm expression on his face, Ray flipped open his PokeNav and immediately dialed for his brother. As he waited for Neil to answer, as if reading Ky's mind, he winked, giving Ky a much-needed friendly smile.

Ulani's eyes danced with poorly hidden glee as Little Guy spoke. It was beyond the Swablu's ability to stay really all sober and serious that long, and a dash of mischief began to reinstate itself into the bird. Sure, she was nervous and all, but things always turned out alright. Always, always, the bird thought blissfully -- she'd never had any reason, any tragedy, to teach her otherwise. So now, with a halting speech as she furiously thought of rhymes, she replied:

"Well, we're going to some old people, he said
Weren't you paying attention?
Soon enough we'll see a balding head
And that'll end your consternation.

"And I bet we'll come together soon
Or I'm nothing but a blue balloon!"

Nevertheless, she quieted down afterwards to better listen for any strains of their trainers' voices. She floated along at a leisurely pace closer to the Totodile's head, tempted to land on it but deciding against that move.

Where /were/ they going, though? She couldn't tell if they were moving out of the forest or deeper into it.

Mary-Anne and Ray, meanwhile, had meandered far enough to find where the brush ended. This didn't seem to help too much, however; neither of the two had a great sense of direction, honestly, and they'd wandered in every which direction so much they couldn't even tell which direction the Pokemon were and which direction Ky and Ray were. All the trees and vines began to look the same after a while.

It was around then that an obnoxiously loud boy band began to sound, breaking the eerie silence around them and frightening a few Bug-types out of the trees (startling M.A. more than just a little). "Oh, it's RayRay!" Neil said, his whole face brightening up considerably (for he'd begun to look a tad sulky). "Ahhh. . . Hullo? Yeah, yeah, we're fine. Ah. . . we couldn't tell you where we were to tell you the truth. . . No, no Totodile. The girl -- what's your name, sorry, ahah -- M.A.'s Swablu and that other guy's Natu went after the Totodile since he went through some brush we couldn't get through. We got through now but we don't have any idea where we're at."

"I've got an idea," Mary-Anne interjected, pulling out two Pokeballs. Out of one came a groggy, tired Daemyn and out of the other came Tora in anything but a low state of mind. Rather, the Phanpy was lively to the point of prancing about non-stop. "These two both have great senses of smell and all. . ." Well, to be honest, Tora was better in that category, but the girl knew saying something unnecessary like that would only mortify Daemyn's pride. "Tora here could find Ky and Ray and bring them back to where we are by our scent, and Daemyn can show the way to our Pokemon."

The Phanpy understood plenty enough and saluted jerkily with its eager trunk. Oh, oh, she wanted to do something something now, she was just bursting with excess energy. Meanwhile, Mary-Anne had scooped up Daemyn into her arms, oofing a little as she did. My, the pup was growing heavy!

The bushes started to rustle even harder as the trainer and his companion watched in alert to see what was about to appear. Myuko took a step back as a young trainer ran out of the brush, tripping over his shoelace which made him land on his face with a thud.

"Ow-ey," the youngster whined as he got up and dusted his clothes off.

Myuko merely looked on with a stern face. "Aren't you the same kid from earlier."

As the remaining dirt was knocked off his shorts and shirt, the kid stood tall, or at least as tall as he could, and said, "Wow! Nothing get's past YOU mister," with so much sarcasm he was drowning in it.

Myuko twitced at the sound of 'Mister'. It was bad enough he turned 18 without his mother, but to be called MISTER!

A vein could be seen on Myuko's brow; he was irked. Grimm had floated to his side at the sight of this.

The wind slowly blew into the tension of Myuko and the youngster eyeing eachother.

Finally, a vein popped on the youngster's brow as he thusted his pointed arm forward saying, "I challenge you to a battle!"

Myuko chuckled as he took a step back, signalling that he accepted. "I only have Grimm." Grimm floated a few feet in front of Myuko.

The youngster removed a small ball from the pocket of his khaki shorts. He pressed he button, enarging the ball as he tossed it in the air. "Come on out!" The ball opened with a small flash, the white light forming the shadow of the small pokemon.

"A Wurmple, huh?" Myuko said as he took out the pokedex that Prof. Birch gave him in the lab.

A few moments before the beam struck, Alpha managed to get a grip back on reality, but it was much too late to avoid the attack. Instead, he pointed his 'sword' directly at the incoming beam with a wink, as if saluting his powerful opponent before his defeat. Then, as if giving one last futile stand, he charged leek-first into the beam as the beam cut through him, straight to the ground, where it left a long smoking scar across the battlefield. As much as he could endure the beam's burning-hot power, his stamina could only take so much, leaving an unconscious Farfetch'd in the beam's path as the light died out.

With a carefully-aimed returning beam, Anthony called Alpha back before he hit the ground. Taking a moment to gather in the current situation, he gave the Pokeball one last look. "You did great Alpha; I'll rest you up as soon as I can," he promised softly. His look then turned as serious as stone, making immediate eye contact with Dylan after his last command. "Dylan, finish off that Crobat. I got a little Hoenn surprise for that Manectric over there," Anthony called out as he grabbed his next choice. "Go, Myu!"

The white light that escaped its Pokeball soon formed into a well-known starter's evolution. It stood almost 5 feet tall and could easily be identified as a Water-type, due to its almost completely blue body, fitted with two large fins on its head and one large fin on the back. With a viciously determined look in its eyes, the Swampert chomped hard with its almost beak-like mouth, trying to startle his dog-like opponent.

"Mud Bomb!" Anthony called. Seeing that the grass was already well-watered so to speak, Myu made quick work to shove both his arms into the ground, heaving a good, heavy amount of mud, straight at the Manectric. "Now let's see what they do when we have the advantage," Anthony thought.

If Little Guy could have laughed, he would have. As much of a mockingbird that Ulani was being, it was nice to have such a cheery and carefree companion. Even metaphorically, any light in this dark, shadowed place was more than welcome.

As if answering Ulani's thoughts directly, the Totodile soon spoke up a few minutes later. "We're definitely getting closer; the forest's starting to clear up," he explained, pointing off in the distance. It was true after all; Little Guy was spending less time dodging and weaving through trees at this point. With a bit of a grunt, the small Totodile sighed. "I hope they take me in; I can't do much since I can't talk to them," he said, almost half-heartedly.

"All right.... Cool.... Gotcha, tell it to try to find a strong flowery smell..... Yup... Cya," was the end of Ray's conversation. He then gave Ky an odd, superior look, one very similar to what he showed before they battled. "Your girlfriend's pretty smart. She's sending her Phanpy off to sniff us out, which should be simple as long as my Gloom stays functional," he explained as he searched his belt for the right Pokeball. In a flash of light, the Gloom reappeared, though it didn't look any healthier than it did by the end of the battle, with a mean-looking burn still surrounding its flower.

"Hey Gloom, just use Sweet Scent on me, okay? I'll have you healed as soon as I can; I just need you to do this for me," Ray asked in a sympathetically touching tone. With little hesitation, the Gloom motioned for its trainer to rub against its bulb of a flower as a strong, sweet aroma was given off. As Ray did so, the Gloom cringed but continued, until a somewhat wet trail was left on the twin's clothes. "Thanks buddy, return."

Ky watched all this with an increasing amount of curiosity building inside him. "Hey, Ray. Why do you treat your Gloom like that, but treat your Totodile like..." Ray then shot Ky a glare that stopped him mid-sentence. Ky rose up his hands. "Jeez, sorry. Forget I asked," he apologized, rolling his eyes.

"Let's just go. Your girlfriend's waiting," Ray teased. Ky couldn't help but blush.

Keiichi was indeed slightly annoyed by Ian's constant poking of his sketch pad because it was interfereing with his drawing, but nevertheless, he made no complaint and showed no sign of anger towards Ian and just continued his sketching because he was used to him by now. Turning his attention again back to the Pokemon battle, the appearance of the prehistoric Pokemon startled Keiichi because as much of a Pokemon sketcher as he was, he was also extremely interested in Pokemon history and evolution, and it was a rare opportunity to see a Fossil Pokemon which could be only retrieved by a machine created by the Gym Leader Blaine at the Cinnabar Lab. Upon its presence, Keiichi let out a mega "WOW!", which...

... startled Ian so badly that he easily lost his balance, falling sideways until he found himself rolling uncontrollably down the hill. Reaching the bottom, Ian could only roll onto his back and stare up into the sky, laughing a bit as he watched the clouds swirl around in his dizzied eyes. Keiichi's sudden outburst may not have startled most people, but in the way Ian knew him, it was quite a shock to see him bolt straight out of his drawing session like that. Heck, Ian didn't even get a chance to look at the Pokemon. Slowly but surely, as soon as the dizziness passed, Ian sat up to get a glimpse himself and soon understood why Keiichi was excited. Kabutops was rare enough to see, even rarer to see it battle.

It was more or less the height he'd been flying at that gave Fang the advantage over the Kabutops for the moment; and even though he'd been temporarily unable to act because of the Hyper Beams aftereffects, the ancient Pokemon's attack came up somewhat short. Glancing around the battlefield, the Crobat spotted the Swampert, and the experienced Pokemon knew that this Pokemon would cause trouble. The green bat glanced towards his trainer, who now had her gaze locked on the Swampert with keen interest.

"That Pokemon looks familiar," she mused to herself, noting the orange whiskers and large fins that adorned the Pokemon - where had she seen that before? As the great blue Pokemon launched the Mud Bomb - Kasiya hadn't heard of that move before - Kasiya began to speculate about the Pokemon's types as she looked up at Fang, assessing his condition. He'd taken a few Slash attacks, but still looked as though he'd be fine for a while longer. I have a bad feeling about this battle, the girl thought, although her expression remained calm and collected as it had throughout the battle.

After the phone call ended, Mary-Anne suddenly sneezed hard.

Neil looked up at the teary-eyed, slightly dazed M.A. and couldn't help but laugh. "You cold?" The girl shook her head, rubbing her red nose back and forth with her forearm. "Someone must be talking about me somewhere," she grinned sheepishly, realizing that this was the first time she'd heard the boy laugh -- sure, it wasn't much, but it was a pleasant sound. She could imagine how the twins must've sounded if they laughed together; wouldn't it be a sound that would warm any father's heart?

"Come to think of it, where are your parents?"

"My mum's probably at home, or whatever. . . .Ow! You'd better send that Phanpy of yours, it just nearly knocked me over!" Which was true; once again, Tora, with all her excess energy, was beginning to "nudge" things. The little elephant had yet to learn to control its own brutal strengh, it seemed, for as Mary-Anne watched with silent laughter, the Phanpy nearly sideswept the boy with its wagging trunk. Mary-Anne had to swiftly catch Neil (nearly dropping Daemyn in the process, to the tired Houndour's dismay) before he tripped over the Pokemon running around and around his legs. "Alright, alright," she laughed. "Tora, go find Ky and Raymond! They'll smell sweet, I'm sure you'll have no trouble at all. Then follow my scent back, you rascal!"

The elephant bounded off like an over-eager puppy, leaving M.A. to chuckle a bit and readjust Daemyn in her arms. Then she remembered her former question and glanced over at Neil questioningly, but the boy's face was turned the other way. 'He doesn't seem to happy, but I don't think it's my place to ask,' Mary-Anne thought to herself, her smiling fading to a contemplative frown. "Well then, Daemyn, let's start heading towards Ulani, alright?" The pup nodded soberly. "I know you're tired, but hang in there for me okay? Oh here. . . let me grab a treat for you real fast, that might make you feel better. . . . where is it, I knew it was in my bag some-- Ahah! Here you go, buddy."

Daemyn ate the snack appreciately, and after chomping down he took a long whiff of the air, paused for a moment, then gestured his muzzle towards the north west, indicating which direction they should go.

Ulani had given Little Guy a cheeky grin before the Totodile had began speaking again. "Ahh. . . well, let's worry when we get there," the Swablu said thoughtfully. "It's a crying shame that humans can't understand Pokemon speech; we understand them, more or less, or what I don't get I can figure from their tone," the bird chirped. She said nothing more, however, now paying closer attention to what was ahead -- they were close, he said.

Since Ky was the taller, he took up the lead as both him and Ray followed the trail left behind by M.A. and Niel. Since the brush near the trail was easy to navigate, they both started at an energetic jog, wanting to catch up as quickly as they could. Though it was difficult to tell, Ky was quite paranoid that the forest was getting darker and that maybe the day was coming to an end. Now, in reality, this wasn't so true. They had set off pretty early in the morning after all, and it was unlikely, even with all of the distractions, that there wouldn't be some sunlight left once they exited the Ilex Forest.

A few minutes later, Ky and Ray stopped. The trail that had been guiding them had been completely diminished by the thick brush that lay before them. Ky wondered in slight awe how M.A. and Niel could have possibly ran through these tall plants without hurting themselves. While Ky was pondering this though, he heard an ominous sound ahead of them.

"M.A?"
"Niel?" Ky and Ray said in unison, though both were in just as much doubt. The thick brush ahead of them seemed to be disappearing rapidly, forming a mole-like trail from below the surface. It weaved randomly a couple of times, stopped, and then made a bee-line, straight for Ky. It didn't take Ky long to figure out who their visitor was, but he had no idea it was going to hurt so much.

When Tora launched herself at Ky, it was as if a cannonball had hit him square in the gut. Unable to cushion the impact, his body buckled around the midsection, with Tora's momentum causing Ky to fly backwards a couple of feet before he lay sprawled across the forest floor. Ray had fallen to the forest floor as well somehow, and so the two of them ended up both rolling on the ground, unable to breathe, one of them from having the wind knocked out of him, the other from laughing so hard.

--

A few more minutes later, the Totodile made a gleeful dash forward, breaking through the forest's boundary like it was the finish line of a marathon race. Little Guy could soon see the clearing as well, which gave him reason enough to land right next to the small Totodile, gathering some rest as he took in the view. Ky, he thought, would most appreciate this sight.

After coming out of the forest, the afternoon sun cast a long-awaited feeling of warmth that was lacking from the dense forest behind them. In the distance, you could tell where Goldenrod got its name, with each of its many buildings casting the sun's reflection off their metal rooftops into the distance, giving the pretty illusion of a city of gold. Even more awe-inspiring, was the sheer size of the radio tower, which if the Ilex Forest hadn't had such an impenetrable canopy, would probably have been seen from just outside Azalea Town.

"Well, the old couples' house isn't too far from here, so you guys can head back to your trainers if you want. I don't want to see them following me," the Totodile said somewhat bitterly. And with that, he made off with a trot along Route 34, searching back and forth for a glimpse of the cottage he so well remembered.

Tora panted happily, wagging her trunk (and unintentionally whacking Ky in the face a few times before realizing her position and edging away from the boy). Mission: successful! A smile aggressively spread across her face as she sat on her hindquarters and watch the two while they caught their breath. Oh, the brush had scratched her tough skin a little here and there but she hardly felt it for all the adrenaline that was pumping through her small body.

Once they were up, the elephant sprung up on her stubby little feet and charged off again the way Mary-Anne had gone before -- despite all of her burrowing, the brush was still too dense for a human to pass through without getting scraped up by all the thorns, and although the Phanpy was brash by character it at least realized that M.A. wouln't be pleased to see Ky and Ray looking like mincemeat. Her trainer's scent had grown weaker and was very much masked by the forests' foliage's smells and Ray's overpowering Sweet Scent, but Tora could have detected M.A.'s smell almost anywhere -- she had a special one to her, that she did, and she knew it well enough from constantly bowling her over.

And so the winding trail began.

____________//

A soft coo escaped the little blue bird's throat as the scenery blazed its way gently into her mind. The warmth, the view, the grandness of it all. . . they've entered Goldenrod before, but they'd never seen it like this. "It's beauutiful," she trilled quietly, drinking in the picture thirstily.

". . . Okay, seeya-- WAIT A SECOND, FELLA. That's it? Hey, you're not going anywhere without at least an explanation."

___________//

Meanwhile, the M.A.-Neil group were steadily heading towards them a good five or ten minutes away, with Daemyn nudging the way.

He was tired of waiting. He was tired of being there. He told Mitsu he'd wait for her, but there's just a point to where you can wait no longer. Kilik exited the Viridian City Gym and whipped out his PokeNav. Scrolling to the girl's name, Kilik decided to send her a text message.

Mitsu,
Sorry I'm no longer in Viridian. Try talking to Mike; he and Giovanni seem to be at a peace (for the moment) so maybe he could introduce you.
See you around,
-Kilik

He didn't stop there. He scrolled up to Mike's name (which was right above Mitsu's) and sent a text to him as well. They were both in the same city, but walking didn't seem to pleasant at the moment.

Mike,
I'm out. Call if anything comes up.
-Kilik

When the small Pidgey disappeared with the letter on the screen, Kilik tucked the device into his pocket and pulled out Vibrava's ball. He released the spastic little creature and eyed it for a moment. "You...know Fly, right?" he whimpered a bit.

Bahamut fluttered around his head, chattering her strange mouth quite loudly. When she felt the boy's hand on her head, the insectoid stopped. It merely nodded to answer his question. Kilik gulped. God, he hated heights. It didn't take a genius to know that. "Fly me to..." he paused and tapped his foot in thought. Where would be a good place for him to train? The chances of Maorde appearing again were very slim, after all. Biting the bullet, he barked the first city that came to mind.

"Goldenrod!" Sure. Goldenrod had trainers all around it; it was quite a busy place, after all. The Underground would be a great place to battle. With that command, Bahamut let out a strange squeal and floated over her new master's head for a moment. Her hands dug into his shirt and lifted him high above the ground. The Vibrava fluttered her wings quickly and flew off to the east.

Kilik quickly felt the color drain out of his face. He shut his eyes tightly and kept his hands balled. His knuckles turned white instantly. A chill ran up his spine. This was not going to be pleasant.

It was disheartening that Kabutops slash had missed but the move was really only to dodge the electric attack anyway. Glad we finally have a type advantage. "Great job Anthony! And now I'll activate our strategy. How about we put on a real show for 'em Pubakto? Use Rain Dance!" Dylan ordered. With Swift Swim, Kabutops would have no problem outspeeding (or being roughly equivallent in speed) even that darned fast Crobat.

The scythe pokemon landed on the ground a good distance from most of the fighting so it had no problem beginning the strange circular dance. It moved in a hasty motion raising it's scythes to the sky as it brushed them together. The effect was almost immediate. The normally mild Cinnebar sky became gray as clouds formed and a gentle mist to rain began to fall on the battlefield (with the heavier rain in the center of the battle).

He was currently flying over Violet City. He only knew that because he opened his eyes long enough to see the Sprout Tower beneath him. Then he shuddered a bit and looked up at the small Pokemon carrying him. "Bahamut, don't you dare give up!" he barked. His voice had a mixture of fear and authority in it. The problem was that Vibrava was just too small to carry the human that distance. She slowed down and began to descend into the city below. Kilik knew if he squirmed then he would drop like a rock and plummet to his doom. He kept very still until his feet finally touched soil beneath. He fell to his knees, since they collapsed out from under him and looked up. Vibrava had let go of him and was now panting on the ground.

"Fine, fine," he said, recalling the tired Pokemon, "Since Sudowoodo is out of the way ahead, I can walk the distance to Goldenrod." He stood up and brushed himself off.

"Oho!" squealed a voice behind the boy, "Fancy meeting you here!" Rebecca placed a hand on her hip, staring down at the kneeling Kilik and smirked. "That looked good on you. On your knees in the dirt. You looked like you were begging."

"You're sick and twisted," Kilik snapped, "And why are you even talking to me? I half expected you to never want to speak to me again after I trounced you in Celadon City." He laughed when he noticed her flinch, "Aha. Struck a nerve. Look, I've got some training to do so if you don--"

"Training?!" she shrieked, "Little-bitty Kilik's training! Good, you could use it. That battle in Celadon was a fluke. In fact," she ran her fingers over the belt of Pokeballs and smiled. It was a genuine smile, "I'll be your sparring partner."

Kilik paused. He didn't want to miss another chance to shove her snotty face into the dirt with another victory. "Fine then, you're on. I'll use four Pokemon." He nabbed up Weezing, Scizor, Lairon, and Ludicolo's Pokeballs and held the small spheres in the palm of his hand.

"Fine, fine," she smirked, "I'll use four, too. And they're all Pokemon you haven't seen me use before!" she giggled. "So! I'll begin with this!" She tossed her first Pokeball. A black bird with the shape of a witch's hat appeared from the sphere. It's tail feathers even looked like the end of a broomstick. "Murkrow! Are you ready?" The bird cawed loudly.

"Alright, then..." Kilik took a few steps back and tossed Ludicolo's ball over his shoulder. The Pokemon appeared in a brilliant flash and smiled. He bounced around, singing his name happily. "It's been a long time. I'm hoping you can deliver, Rebecca."

Still unaware that Jaeshan's Shelgon was suffering from poisoning, Gwen bit her bottom lip rather hard as the four stone spires shot out of the ground, encasing her Swalot in a stony tomb. The Pokemon's body seemed to glow with a soft green hue, and the light traveled downwards and into the ground, indicating that the already sluggish (and dually paralyzed) Swalot's speed had been reduced even further.

Crap... that thing is tougher than I thought! What to do... what to do... Gwen thought fearfully, chewing on a fingernail. "Don't give up Molasses, we can to this!" she called out, her voice muffled a bit through her fingers. "Try your Sludge Bomb again, if you can!"

The Swalot's normally vapid expression had changed to one of determination, and with every ounce of willpower it could muster, the purple Pokemon pushed itself forward, once again working up the strength to lob another explosive bomb of goop towards the tough Shelgon. The strain was noticeable in every movement of the Pokemon after the attack went off, and Gwen knew that her Pokemon didn't have much left in him at all.
