So I thought I would try something today. I went to tektek and made a very (badly matched) inexpensive avi. Roughly 24k. Then I made a thread, posted my avi and asked for help, company while I was bumping etc.

Well got flamed a bit (of course!) and continued to respond nicely. My thread lasted about 3 pages and died. And a very generous CB'er donated me 200g and a Blue Strapless Bra (naked avi, remember?).

So I found the 'gift giving' thread in the CB. 14k pages worth of generous CB'ers gifting like crazy. I thought "Wow! This will be fun! Like in the GCD, but with more people" Right? Wouldn't you think that?

Well. It really isn't. eek Nothing like what was in the GCD. These people keep track!! G: xx R: xx .. and not just that, but exactly what they've gifted and what they've been given. So, I figured if you can't beat 'em and all that. So I make up my 'post' which I just update as things happen. Now, I'm not going crazy gifting everyone I see like in the GCD, first I must figure out how this works.

Well, I've got it figured out now. stare They are not so generous as they all claim. 14k of bumps and advertisement is what it really is. People giving away daily chance and trash while asking for MC's in return. In fact, some of them even demand 'gift backs'. I had one in particular send a trade to me, a donation of 50g. The title said 'Please gift back' stare So I accept the trade and head for her profile to see what is on her wishlist. And she cancelled the trade. rolleyes

Now, if I hadn't been using a mule and tracking with each post my xx/xxx for each turn I would have never noticed she cancelled the trade. I would have just assumed it completed and gifted her something somewhere between 500-1k gold. I was seriously disgruntled. So I got to looking at my gifts compared to what I had been gifted.. and realized I've spent about 10k on 'gifts' today for a return of maybe 2k.

I realize that gift-giving isn't about what you get in return. In fact, that is so ingrained that it took me 9 donations and 7 gifts to me to figure it out. And I never would have even noticed if that whole group wasn't so intent on tracking how much everyone has 'gifted'. Now I was at 7 & 7 when that girl cancelled her trade.

Up til that point, I was gifting back to those who had gifted me. Now though, I went looking. Some of the people in there put right in their posts "I gift back". So I found one of them who specified they gift back in the same g range as what you gift them. And I get on another mule and buy a pair of "Shoes That Have Kicked Many A Butt" (1k) and send the gift clearly marked it was from my mule. Want to guess what he gifted back?

Nothing. In fact, he PM'd me and said he'd just been given a pair of those shoes. He didn't return them (even though he had 2 pair). In fact, he told me he was going to sell them. He needed the gold. Not a thank you, just .. I already have them. Like he thought I was going to send something else! scream

Ok. I found one bad apple, that doesn't mean they are all like that. So I find a female avatar that specifies "I gift back" and send her a Black Tie (It was in her wishlist). 820g. Once again, try to guess what she 'gifted back' .. you got it. Nothing. Not even a thank you PM, or one telling me she already had it. Just nothing. Like I threw my Black Tie down a black hole.

It was quite an experience for me. Now, not everyone there is like that. In fact, there was one girl who had in her posts "If you can't afford a gift, please comment my profile. I want 400 comments." So I posted her a comment and in return, she sent me 1k and a flower bouquet. I would like to scoop her up and bring her to HSGG. She's too good for the CB.

Anyway.. there is probably the longest post I've ever made and if actually read through it, I will be impressed. I just had to share my experience. I'm still amazed by the whole thing.. it's so misleading at first.

I try to avoid some of the other threads on Gaia because, frankly, I can't deal with some of the people I find there, for exactly the reasons you illustrated. So many people here are out for themselves, and give almost no thought to their fellow Gaians. Anyone you can find who belongs here, please, drag them in, kicking and screaming, if need be. :3 (btw, I'm inviting a friend, Terry Farshune - he doesn't talk much, but he's good people)


As for my other dilemma, I will likely give it to her, but ask her what she's buying (in a very nice way, of course, and only because I'm nosy). See, she first asked me to trade an item or buy that G-Bot, and since I had no use for it, I thought of you ^_^ and your quest for however many millions of G-Bots (lol). but now, immediately after your trade, she PMs me and says "Can I borrow 3k? Plzzzzz?" And she does that a lot. She can be annoying, but I did the G-Bot thing since I figured I could help. Looks like I just fanned the flames a bit.

I usually don't consider anything I give a loan, not even IRL. My mother taught me to just consider it a gift, and if they give it back, well, that's a bonus for me.
