Bryce had gotten Joyce to laugh, and he had finally proved to himself that he could control someone that was as stubborn as a board. He smiled, happy to hear her laugh, but, well, she got up and started to apologize before he could say anything. She was curtsying so low this time that he could see her neck, and this bothered him. He turned away, a bit embarrassed by her, actually. "Honestly, Joyce? It's fine. I forgive you. No punishments needed. I was trying to get you to laugh, anyway." He gave her permission to stop embarrassing him and herself, and he picked up his goblet to take a drink from it. It still didn't do the same thing that blood did for him, but at least the milk seemed to get rid of that dry mouth feeling, and that was a relief to him. He sat there, smirk on his face, proud of his efforts and glad to have the knowledge that he had gained. He was powerful, and he liked knowing that.
Bryce stretched his body upwards, feeling the muscles in his body get that needed energy and stress released. He wasn't sure where to go from here, now, since he had done what he had set out to do. "So, what's on your agenda for today?" he asked, knowing she would probably answer briefly, although with all the progress he had been making, maybe she would answer in a longer, more drawn out sentence. That would be interesting to see. His father would have been proud of him, and he would tell Bryce that little things like this were what he needed to succeed, since he had to get his mental power to expand. Bryce didn't have the physical abilities that a lot of vampires had, but his mental capabilities were some of the best that came around, just like his father's. His father was cunning, sly and sneaky, as well as powerful and forboding.

Without you, the ground thaws, the rain falls, the grass grows. Without you, the seeds root, the flowers bloom, the children play. The stars gleam, the poets dream, the eagles fly, without you. The earth turns, the sun burns, but I die, without you. Joyce blushed a bit when she sat back down. "Oh, well...I don't know to be honest. I had been contemplating reading, but..." She already knew too much, really. She truthfully shouldn't be learning so much, it wasn't good for a lady to have so much knowledge. Especially at her age. She just needed to focus on sewing and cooking. Well, she couldn't cook here, but maybe she'd sew herself another dress. Still, something bothered her. "If I may be so bold to ask why you insist on making me laugh?" She asked, a tiny smile on her face after a moment or two. She didn't really know why Bryce was being so kind. No one ever had cared about her this much. They left her after a time, no one was this insistent. He really seemed to want to break open her shell, like he was determined to find the person underneath. It was sweet, really. Still, she was just as determined to reamind proper, but she found that determination ebbing away as she was around him. Around others, she could remain statue-like, but he was different he was her...friend.
Without you, the breeze warms, the girl smiles, the cloud moves. Without you, the tides change, the boys run, the oceans crash. The crowds roar, the days soar, the babies cry, without you. The moon glows, the river flows, but I die, without you.

Joyce had taken her seat back at the table, of course, before he asked his question. She had blushed, which was another thing he hadn't seen yet, or at least, never noticed. He had always noticed features, so unless she was doing so when he wasn't looking at her, then he had never seen her blush before and not realized it. Joyce told him that she was going to read, quite possibly, and if she got joy from that, good for her. "Well, just read about one of the classes you are taking. That would give you a good excute to read, right? You have to know about the classes you are taking or else you risk failing, and I think your parents would rather you had knowledge than fail, right?" Of course, Bryce didn't know the truth about that, he had just assumed it to be right. Who would want their child to fail? That would be just cruel, and Bryce would feel lucky every day to have the father, and even the mother he had, regardless of how much he hated his mother.
One question from Joyce seemed to slide into him and open him up. Usually, he would not have shared his motives, but something about her wanted to make him truthful. It was as if he couldn't control himself right then and there, but the words slipped out of his mouth like a muggle car on black ice. "Well, it was part of the whole plan. I mean, what good would I be to my father and the rest of the vampire community if I can't get through to one stubborn girl?" The sad thing was, it didn't end there. He just had to keep going, as if his impulses were on the loose just then. "What other use would I get from making you laugh? It was only to prove that I cou-..." With his eyes wide, he froze in the middle of that word. The second those words came out, he regretted ever saying them. He didn't like to share his goals with people, because people always ran when he did. His mouth was open, as if he were going to say something to cover it up, but, it was too late. He had already made the grave error, and he wished he could go back on it and never had said it. There was nothing he could do to fix what he had done, and right then, he felt more wrong than ever. He never thought that hearing what he had done would change his mind on how he had acted. Now he just wanted to be dead.

Without you, the ground thaws, the rain falls, the grass grows. Without you, the seeds root, the flowers bloom, the children play. The stars gleam, the poets dream, the eagles fly, without you. The earth turns, the sun burns, but I die, without you. At first, Joyce shrugged and was about to say something, but what Bryce next said made her heart sort of seize up. Tears welled in her eyes and she dropped her fork. Joyce was frozen. No...it couldn't be...Bryce had been using her? Controlling her, just to prove he could? All the emotions that had been bundled up inside her seemed to explode. The pain she'd hidden, the hurt she felt...her heart was racing like it had on the day Rosebud died. Her head was spinning, she felt nauseous. It was impossible...no...tears started streaming down her cheeks as they almost never did. She rarely ever cried, and never in a public place like this, it was improper. No...she just sat there, still, denying it, shaking. No wonder she hadn't wanted to feel, all she felt right now was pain. This was no doubt the best relationship she'd had in the past seven years. She forgot herself, stared Bryce, in his eyes, and did something she hadn't done in quite a long, long time, if ever, and began screaming.
“YOU LIED TO ME!? You...YOU WERE JUST USING ME? AS SOME PUPPET?” Losing it completely, she slapped him, hard across the face. Her voice was high-pitched, anything but monotone, it was identical to a bloodcurdling shriek, except with words. “HOW DARE YOU! I HATE YOU BRYCE! NO WONDER I DON'T SPEAK TO PEOPLE, NO WONDER I KEEP EVERYTHING HIDDEN, IT'S BECAUSE OF THIS! PEOPLE LIKE YOU! I DIDN'T THINK YOU WERE A MONSTER, DEPSITE YOUR OTHER HALF, DESPITE THAT WHICH YOU WEAR AROUND YOUR NECK. THAT DOESN'T MAKE YOU A MONSTER. WHAT MAKES YOU A MONSTER IS WHAT YOU DID RIGHT NOW! WHY DON'T I SHOW EMOTION, WHY DON'T I CARE!? IT'S BECAUSE OTHERWISE, ALL I'D FEEL IS PAIN...AND HURT! I DON'T EVER WANT TO SEE YOU AGAIN! I DON'T EVER WANT TO FEEL ANYTHING AGAIN! I DON'T WANT TO CRY ANYMORE!” She wiped her eyes and stood there, her gloved hands curled into fists. Her face was a complete and utter mask of fury, hatred, and deep hurt. She then took a deep breath, kept her eyes hooded, curtsied, said in a tone with a steely coldness; ”Do forgive me, Sir. I forgot myself. I regret my tone.” Her eyes were slits. But she didn't stay in the curtsy, she didn't want to hear whatever he had to say. She turned her back on him, as she never had done before. It was rude to turn her backside to a male as she left a room, but right now, she didn't care. She ran out from the room, and ran straight up to her dormitory. Tears were still falling fast down her cheeks, her whole body was shaking.
Without you, the breeze warms, the girl smiles, the cloud moves. Without you, the tides change, the boys run, the oceans crash. The crowds roar, the days soar, the babies cry, without you. The moon glows, the river flows, but I die, without you.

His composure that he could keep after feeding only two days ago seemed to disappear. Usually it took three days before he broke, and he could keep his emotions bottled up inside, since he actually had no need to use them. This was different. This was real. He had never felt so hated in his entire life.
He heard the first few words come out of her mouth, and they felt like stabs in his heart, and he knew that he had done something horribly wrong. Maybe his father was wrong. Maybe he didn't neet to manipulate people. When her hand came soaring at his face, that was all she needed to do for him to understand that severity of his actions. She continued though, and he never had felt so wrong in his entire life. Bryce would have done anything, right then and there to take it back.
As she left, Bryce's eyes were glued to her departure, but his mind was elsewhere. The pain on his cheek was nothing compared to the pain consuming his heart.
