Secondly, I'm not even sure what you're trying to suggest here, but the longevity of a space marine is based on genetic alteration that occurs as a result of the implants placed in him during puberty. By 16 to 18, he is a full-fledged marine and his physiology is closer to a fully-grown adult human. He's still undergone a level of training in that time which puts to shame an entire lifetime of service in the Guard.

Did I say that a guardsmen and a space marine are one and the same?
I did say the "average human" and "average space marine" in a different sentance.
And of course they average live is longer because of the implants, how else they would survive from ordeals that an guardsman can´t?

And I still remind you of the ragnar´s-novel and bloodquest comic.
In both, Ragnar and Leonatos appears more adult then a 10 to 12 year old child.

FlashbackJon
Historically, puberty meant adulthood, especially in primitive or barbaric societies - like the ones from which space marines recruit. There are 10 year olds in this world RIGHT NOW who are willing and capable of hunting and killing you with considerable skill. You're going to tell me this is not the case in fictional Warhammer?

Hmmm, let me think.... YES!
What would a 10 year old child understand the need of protecting his home
or why the big monstery bugs called "Tyranids" are ripping theyr parents apart or why other mens in big armours would come the slay them all?

I would understand if the child is a teenager, but they have much better
consempt about what is going on around him.
I have hard time to imagine that a part would just give a gun and train the
child to use it, in a risk of someone getting hurt by accident.
10-year old childs mind is too playfull to understand when a guy in a huge armour would come before him and say "we requiting you, oh and we need to put some implants all over your body and that might be painful."
The child would just think: I got a new play-friend. YAY! :3

It is probably true that barbatic-society-chapters would requit 10 year old childs, but we are talking about ALL chapters.
So I would say that most chapters would most likely requit childs from the age of 14 to 18, rathen then having a 10 to 13 year old running around
and doing something dangerous and unpredictable.

I'll take this chance to ask Mr Masque and Mr John to cool their jets.

Although I do agree wholeheartely with Flashback's statements about names, sticking to fluff, denial and not being happy when told things, I do believe that the place for bickering is the PM inbox. Failing that, rapiers at dawn atop the Empire State Building, Manhattan.

Death Masque, when you ask the internet for an opinion, they may not tell you what you wanted to hear. That's all there is to it really. Take the criticism and fix the fluff. Make it less complicated and less ambiguous.

Bring this to a point, please. What do you think I'm saying to you? That all Space Marines are 12 year olds?

Were you an idiot 10 year old? (See below for elaboration.)

Then you clearly have no understanding of the world around you.

You might say that of course, you're still incorrect, both logically and by contradiction in the official background. sweatdrop

If you are going to build a mentally-conditioned, chemically- and genetically-altered killing machine, you want to work with a blank slate. You want to start as early as possible.

Children are a result of the conditions they are raised in. There are kids your age (and I'm assuming you're not much older than the age we're discussing) in the Congo, Somalia, or Sierra Leone RIGHT NOW that would track you down and kill you with ruthless efficiency if they believed you posed a threat to their village or their family. These are kids your age that can wield a rifle or spear with the same level of proficiency you might expect of a professional soldier - because that's what they are and what they've been all their life.

And besides all that, of course, you're still simply wrong as the fluff says otherwise in plain black and white. wink

I sense grave misunderstandings of Space Marines.

Space Marine chapters usually recruit from feral worlds and/or death worlds whose populations are naturally toughend into formidable warriors because of their environments.

Most recruits are initially of the ages associated with the beginnings of puberty, and depending on the individual Chapter's implantation and training proceedures it can take 1-8 years before a recruit is a full fledged battle brother.

-A minor note: there are probably much more than 1000 chapters at large in the galaxy recruiting from many more than an equivalent number of worlds. The Imperium consists of MILLIONS of worlds ranging from conan the barbarian to terra and mars.

OH yeah: Spance Marine training proceedures tend to weed out a large of number of the initial recruits by just being hazardous.

I would not have expected such an erudite yet succinct post from a user with the name "trooper" plus some numbers, but my hat is off to you, sir! 3nodding

Flashback, while I remain on your side, you seem to be acting a bit demeening towards Asmondai, and I'd appriciate that you avoid this. I believe that both of you are getting a bit too involved in this, and as Mykal said, you might want to "cool your jets."

I'd like to add though, that Spartan boys were taken away from their mothers at the age of eight to begin their training to become great warriors. Children not much older than that today fight to defend themselves in the Middle East and Africa. In Chechnya (sp?), it was not uncommon to find the soldiers of the resistance to not have many over the age of twenty.

I believe that Space Marines would want to try and get their recruits at about the age of 8-10, before the child hits puberty and their body (and minds) begin to change. By doing this, it will be easier to be able to shape their bodies and minds into the hardened warriors of the Adeptus Astartes (hormones and whatnot, too tired to go into it, I'm off in about five minutes.)

I mean no disrespect, though perhaps a little condescension. The 'demeaning' remarks are tongue-in-cheek; only there to bring a point to the table.

Nonetheless, consider my jets cooled. ninja

@ Death Masque: please take all comments and criticism with a grain of salt-- you posted your work on the internet expecting criticism and got just that. I look forward to any/all rewrites you do.

Yes, lets. The following is a link to some pics of the brand new (soon to be released) space marine veterans. http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/index.php?showtopic=108393

Oh, and apparantly a new pattern land raider is going to be revealed at this years games day. It WILL be a GW kit (not forgeworld). All I know about it is the name: Land Raider Terminus.
