CatLuvr2011 I've been playing clarinet for six years and just became a section leader in my marching band. I love playing so much, but I have come to believe that I might be a serial killer of reeds. I destroy about five a week. sweatdrop wow O.o that's brutal

pezhi what do you mean by demonically high octave? like..everything past High C(above the staff)? if so you need to have a really well formed embouchure. you need to have great breath support. and you NEED to be pushing from your diaphragm. also you need to open your throat up and your mouth needs to be far enough on the reed, otherwise you will just close the reed off and nothing will come out. but really you should be doing all of this anyway..so if you're supposedly "good" clarinet players i don't see why you should be having troubles I never said I was that good. and part of the problems could be the bite marks (O.o) and stuff on the mouthpiece, probably left over from when I was a careless little 5th grader, and my parents refuse to spent the money to get it fixed.

Edit: and i tied the spit rag together, btw. i'm not that gross. it's just not quite long enough to reach all the way through my clarinet without taking ot apart.

I imagine by not taking good care of them wink I played sax in marching band and clarinet in concert band and would go over a year on a reed. I broke them in regularly, and swapped them if I found a better one, but I made sure to not let my reeds get chipped >< I play on strength 5 Vandoren 56 reeds on clarinet, and for both alto and tenor sax I use medium-hard Fibracell reeds... those are synthetic, sound great, and you can literally flick the tip and it wont chip or crack. I don't practice sax enough to keep my cane reeds in check, so the fibracell saves me money and I don't have to worry about breaking a reed when I'm at a crowded convention!
