He worked in the shadows, dealing in secrets and lies. If he could not gain a name through honor, then he would walk the other path. He would make the others call him something, even if it was just a way to name him in warnings to others.
In another life, he might someday have been Too Clever For His Own Good, Who Dies Honorably, but in time, the other totoma started picking him out by his appearance, calling him Ashlegged One. It was always snarled in anger or spat in disgust, but it was his name, and he had earned it through as much hard work or more as any other totoma went through. When the others realized that they had inadvertently given him a name in their punishment, a few amended his title to Name-Thief Ashlegged, in grudging recognition of how he had played them all.

The wolf in the clearing snuffled around, trying to locate his ram-headed prey. The totoma knew that if the wind shifted even slightly, his scent would give him up. Still, he'd chosen his ground well. He'd been alone for so long that he'd had to learn to take advantage of everything; terrain, camouflage, wind, weather, and even sounds were his tools of defense. Watching the wolf, he had no fear. He was merely biding his time around an inconvenience.
The wind, which had been a steady breeze blowing in his face under the bush, suddenly stilled, then started to ruffle the fur on his back. He swore internally as the wolf lifted his nose into his scent. It looked right at him and growled. The young totoma burst from the bush and rushed the wolf, knowing that surprise had to be his element in this. One good charge that took the wolf in the face, and the pawing promise of another, and the wolf departed, discouraged.
The two adult totoma hunters that had watched the whole thing from a significant vantage point, came down to congratulate the young one, commenting to each other that they'd never seen anykin so unafraid.
