Cody and Tropius were flying over Johto. He pulled the invisibility watch out of his pocket and put it on. Cody hit a button on the side and they both became invisible. They were soon over the whirl islands. Tropius went in for a landing.

Mission- Down, but not Out! (Part 2)

Part 1 can be found here.

And now, the conclusion:

“Oh, Thard…. Why?” Her voice was trembling and barely audible. When Scizor raised a claw to strike, I drew out my swords. A part of my brain told me I must be crazy, trying to challenge Scizor hand-to-claw. The Steel-type thrust his pincer forward. His victim closed her eyes and shed a single tear. I made one last, desperate lunge to reach the scene in time.

Across the hilltop, the sound of clashing steel rang out like a bell. I could feel the trickle of blood running down my cheek where Scizor’s claw grazed me. Hopefully I’d been quick enough. Not daring to take my eyes away from Scizor, I asked the woman, “Are you all right? Auri?”

The woman gasped but said nothing. Instead my clone spoke up. “Tch,” he spat, “You’re here earlier than I expected. Incompetent fools.”
“I’m sorry, I don’t think we’ve been intro-DUCED!” On the last syllable I swept my swords up, throwing Scizor’s claw away from my head. Scizor jumped a half step back.
“Haven’t you figured it out? I’m you,” he intoned, “I am Thard.”
“Your late leader may have been cloned from Darkfire, but he called himself Larvitar. Surely the rest of you clones wish for some distinction from the originals.”
My clone looked irritated that I’d called him out like this. Reluctantly, he answered, “Toulcus. Now I’m afraid you’ll have to excuse me. Though I’d love to put both of you in your grave right here, my pokémon aren’t up to another battle yet. I suppose I’ll just have to call on Plan ‘B.’ Scizor!”

Toulcus snapped his fingers and turned away. His pokémon returned to his side and kept a close eye on us as they retreated. I sheathed my swords and, once Toulcus and his Scizor were safely out of sight, breathed a sigh of relief.
“Thard? Is … is it really you?” Auri’s voice was still shaky but regaining strength.
I turned around and offered a hand to help her up. The verdant spark had returned to her eyes. “You’ve changed your hair,” I remarked casually.
Auri sprang to her feet and threw her arms around me. She happily cried, “Oh Thard, it really is you!”
I gently returned her embrace, but only for a moment. “Auri, listen, you’re not safe here,” I cautioned as I pulled her away. “We have to get away from here. Start packing.”
“You’re hurt!” Her eyes fell across the cut on my cheek
“There’s no time for that, we have to hurry.”

On the short jog back to Auri’s house, I could tell she had regained her confidence and composure. She’d moved beyond her brush with death at ‘my’ hands and was now focused on the task at hand. Inside, she directed me to her kitchen so I could gather some provisions. Meanwhile she turned aside to her bedroom to pack a change of clothes and any medical supplies she could find. This would normally be an easy task, but the entire house was in disarray. It looked like the LB peon had ransacked the place before coming out to battle.

I grabbed the largest metal pot I could see and scoured the area around the pantry. Dried fruit, nuts, canned everything, whatever non-perishable foods I found I stuffed into the pot. When it was nearly full, I jammed the lid on it and lugged the makeshift shopping basket out to the hall. Auri came running up too, her old travel bag bulging with hastily packed things. We were just about to leave when she exclaimed, “Oh!” and detoured into the living room.

“What’s wrong?” I asked, “Aren’t we ready to leave?”
Auri started rooting around near one of the bookshelves. “I’m not leaving without this.”
Glancing around, I spotted a small brick-shaped object with a round aperture. I immediately recognized it and quickly scooped it into a pocket.
“Aha!” she triumphantly proclaimed, holding up a photo album.
I opened my mouth to speak when the room filled with a loud, staccato whirring noise. “Time to go!” I shouted over the din. Auri stepped over the piles of stuff strewn about as I hurled the pot of food through the closest window. Taking her left hand, I ran toward the shattered glass and leapt through. We landed on the grass outside and ducked for cover not a second too soon. A massive, fiery explosion demolished her house like tissue paper.

Still holding Auri’s hand, I rose to one knee and looked around. Over the roar of the burning wreckage we could still hear the whirring sound. I drew one sword with my free hand and waited. Sure enough, a moment later a helicopter gunship circled around the column of smoke. As the craft angled down for a second shot I took aim. Slashing at the gunship, I yelled, “Purge Wave!”

Instantly, a bolt of energy arced from my blade and cleft the air. It ripped through the craft’s starboard weapon array and ignited a thruster on one of the missiles. The blast from the missile’s thruster destabilized the helicopter. Its pilot struggled to stay airborne as he (or she) aborted the attack. Auri whistled in amazement and chirped, “You’ve picked up some fancy steak knives!”

We’d won a moment’s safety and could now plan our next move. Yet there was something pressing into the palm of my hand. During the chaos a moment ago I hadn’t noticed it, but with the immediate danger past, it finally registered in my mind. Auri was… my mind couldn’t fathom it. The pain in my hand was minor, but it opened a deep wound in my heart. Nothing I ever felt was as wrenching as this pain. Almost mechanically, I let go of Auri’s hand and moved to pick up the spilt food. “Thard, what’s wrong?” she inquired, noticing the change in my behavior. I felt numb and couldn’t reply.

Auri gave me a concerned look and bit on her lip, but decided not to press the issue. Instead she took charge of our escape. “Come on, it’s too exposed up here. We should make for the woods north of the city.”
Amidst my swirling thoughts I only managed to respond, “Yeah.”
She dug through her pack and pulled out a collapsible bicycle and tucked her photo album in its place. Following her lead, I also rummaged through my pack for my Aqua Bike. Together we rode down the hill towards Fuchsia City. As we approached the edge of town, Auri turned onto a side path that skirted the area. When I pulled along side her, she told me, “With everything that’s happened, I don’t think we’d be safe in the city. That man who looks like you, he could be waiting for us.”

She was right. Toulcus probably went to the Pokémon Center and was waiting to pounce before our pokémon were healed. We circled the city in silence. I was glad to have the chance to work through my thoughts as we rode.

Hours passed. The sun was hanging low in the sky before we arrived at the forest’s edge. As we crossed beneath the canopy of leaves, the fog in my mind seemed to lift. I finally came to terms with my pain. When we could no longer see Fuchsia’s skyline behind us, Auri stopped and sat down, saying, “We can rest here for a few minutes. Our pokémon need attention, and so does that cut.”
Sitting beside her, I countered, “Auri, we need to get word to your fiancé. He’ll be worried when he hears what happened.”
She was positively thunderstruck. “But… I didn’t… h-how did you…?” She stammered.
“Your ring. I felt it when I grabbed your hand before escaping the house.”
“So,” a look of understanding filled her eyes, “that’s why you were behaving so strangely. Listen, I –”
I held up my hand to stop her. “No, you don’t have to explain. I think I never fully forgave myself for walking away. I loved you from the moment I first looked into your eyes, and I always will, but I now know there can never be anything more. You’ve found happiness with a man who shares your dreams, am I right? That’s all that really matters.”
Auri leaned over and clasped my hands. “Thank you, Thard.” A tear of joy traced its way down her cheek.

Our pokémon were in bad shape. The battles earlier in the day had taken their toll, and not rushing them to a Pokémon Center hadn’t helped matters either. Auri couldn’t scrounge up much in the way of pokémon medicine, so I gave her some of mine. Several Revives and Hyper Potions later, our pokémon were looking ready for action again. As we returned the last of our pokémon to their respective pokéballs, Auri sat me down again. This time she pulled a small first aid kit from her bag. She cleaned the cut on my cheek as best she could and taped a bandage over it. I closed my eyes and breathed in the moment. “There,” she said, “that should do it.”

“My, isn’t this a touching scene.”
The all-too-familiar voice caused both of us to jump. We spun around to find where the voice was coming from. “I must say, you’re proving most difficult to kill.” My clone stepped out from behind a tree.
“Toulcus!” Auri and I shouted.
“You even managed to damage our gunship.”
“Anyone with a half-decent Dragonair could do that,” I snapped.
“Don’t be so sure,” Toulcus sneered, “The Typhon’s armor was designed to repel pokémon attacks, which makes your victory all the more puzzling.”
“So, there are some things even a clone can’t inherit.”

“Aha ha ha ha ha~!” Our conversation was interrupted by a high-pitched laugh coming from amid the tree tops. When Auri and I looked up, we saw a woman with too much curly orange hair standing on a branch overhead. She quickly jumped to the ground and stood beside Toulcus. “So, is she the one? Good work. Intel on this target was especially sketchy. I wasn’t sure she even existed.” Auri looked confused, but I recognized the newcomer. She was Shelly, one of Tsunami’s best and most trusted Admins. Archie must mean business if he sent her to take care of things.

“Shelly,” I said sarcastically, “what a pleasure it is to see you.”
“How I wish the feeling were mutual,” she sighed with a shrug, “I’m actually here for your little friend. I know you won’t hand her over quietly, so I’ll just have to eliminate you first.”
Auri stepped forward. “Not if I have anything to say about it!” she said, holding up a pokéball.
“Oh? You’re gutsy, I’ll give you that,” Shelly taunted, “but you should be careful! You don’t want to get hurt!” Shelly too held out a pokéball.
“Watch yourself, Shelly,” Toulcus growled, extracting a pokéball from his cloak, “The b***h is tougher than she looks.”
“Enough talk!” I cut across them all. My blood boiled at that last remark. I whipped out a pokéball of my own.
At once all four of us released our pokémon.

Glittering in the sunlight, Metang appeared beside Auri’s Espeon. Scizor made a repeat appearance with Shelly’s Crawdaunt. Espeon quickly concentrated its powers and formed a wall of Reflect. Scizor and Crawdaunt attempted to KO the psychic pokémon with a quick X-Scissor and Crunch combo, but thanks to the barrier, their target managed to hang on. My pokémon got rolling with Agility. I had a good idea what Auri would do next, so I ordered, “Metang, fly east and tilt towards Espeon! Get ready to attack!” Metang obeyed the command, but seemed a bit uncertain about it. Following my lead, Auri’s Espeon used Morning Sun. The rays reflecting off Metang’s shiny head resembled the light of dawn and gave Espeon a power boost. Scizor pressed the attack on Espeon and landed a solid hit, but Crawdaunt ran over to try and stop Metang. Crabhammer met Hammer Arm and neither pokémon went unscathed, but Crawdaunt got the worst of it.

As Crawdaunt ran back to prepare another attack, the grass in the clearing sprang up and tangled the pokémon’s legs. Crawdaunt tripped over the Grass Knot and Metang rushed in to finish the job with another Hammer Arm. Scizor came back with a third X-Scissor and very nearly KO’ed Espeon. Shelly called back her defeated pokémon and sent Ludicolo to liven things up. Both she and Toulcus tried to finish Espeon, but Auri made a quick swap for Venusaur. Energy Ball bounced off harmlessly and X-Scissor’s effectiveness was reduced. Metang dealt Scizor some damage with Hammer Arm.

I looked over at Auri and made a subtle move toward my pokémon. She nodded her head just slightly and commanded Venusaur to use Sleep Powder… on Ludicolo. The dancing green pokémon was out like a light as I swapped Metang for Maul. Shelly’s pokémon was helpless, but Toulcus’ used Double-Team for protection. With Reflect gone, Scizor had an opening to strike but instead braced itself for Maul’s attack. Venusaur lobbed a Sludge Bomb at the snoozing Ludicolo. Finally, Maul launched her Overheat for massive damage. If not for Scizor’s Endure, it surely would have been a one-hit wonder.

Ludicolo finally awoke and launched an Ice Beam at Venusaur, causing serious damage, but Auri’s pokémon fought back with another severe Sludge Bomb. Scizor turned the tables on Maul with a mighty Reversal hit, taking my pokémon out of the picture. I called her back and sent Salamence up to fight next. He was rested and ready for action, and wasted no time dropping Scizor with Aerial Ace. Venusaur also finished off Ludicolo with another sludgy barrage. Walrein and Crobat stepped up next.

I didn’t need Walrein taking out Salamence so I called him off and put Metang back in. As I expected, Walrein tried Ice Beam, causing minor damage to my Steel-type. Crobat put Venusaur in a bind with Confuse Ray, while dodging a Sleep Powder attack. Crobat next turned on Metang, confusing it too. Venusaur hurt itself, bringing it perilously close to a knockout. Walrein did the rest by conjuring a huge Surf attack. Venusaur was down, Metang was injured, and Toulcus looked ready to explode.
“What are you doing Shelly?!” He raged, “J.L. took a hit from that move too!”
“So?” Shelly shrugged, “He looks like a tough old bat. Deal with it.”
During their argument, Metang had a clean shot at Crobat and knocked it out with Zen Headbutt.

Auri and Toulcus returned their fainted pokémon and sent Kangaskhan and Electivire, respectively. Catching Auri’s eye again, I mouthed, “Do it.” She bit her lip again, but put her trust in my plan. Her Kangaskhan and Toulcus’ Electivire both launched a simultaneous Earthquake barrage. Metang went down hard, Electivire took a huge hit, and this time it was Shelly’s turn to get angry.
“Look what you did to Walrein!” She screamed, “Watch where you’re aiming you clod!”
“Hmph. Looks like a tough old beach master. Deal with it,” Toulcus retorted.
During all the shouting, Shelly completely forgot to give Walrein an order.

Now I sent Sidious out for some fun. Walrein attacked with Ice Beam and Electivire went for Kangaskhan with Thunderpunch. Kangaskhan turned around and hammered her foe with Drain Punch, and Sidious finished Walrein with Giga Drain. Shelly pulled her fallen pokémon back and put Mightyena to work. Kangaskhan dealt the finishing blow to Electivire as Sidious planted its roots. Mightyena howled to pump its attack.

Dusknoir hit the field next. Kangaskhan jumped in with Double-Edge, much to Toulcus’ surprise. “NO! How did you?... Wait, of course.”
“That’s right,” Auri finished for him, “Kangaskhan’s Scrappiness.”
“I’ll deal with that in a moment. First though, Dusknoir, use Curse!” He pointed at Sidious. The ghost obligingly jabbed itself to place its curse on Sidious. With her ingrained roots, I couldn’t even call her back. Mightyena came down on Sidious with a powerful Crunch. Sidious landed a Giga Drain on Dusknoir, but it wasn’t enough. The curse took a heavy toll, leaving Sidious about to faint.

Kangaskhan dealt a Drain Punch to Dusknoir, knocking it out and recovering a little. Mighyena bit down on Sidious once more, overwhelming her defensive might. Toulcus replaced his ghost with Leafeon as I let Claydol take my Cradily’s spot. Shelly’s Mightyena leapt in with blinding speed and cut Kangaskhan’s attack short. It was finally out of the battle. Leafeon prepared a flurry of Razor Leaves and Claydol was powering up Psychic when I heard Auri cry out, “Thard, no!”

I had no idea why Auri tried to stop me, but it was too late to stop Claydol’s attack. Following the ripple of Claydol’s Psychic, I saw it: a wild Lickitung wandered out of the bushes and directly into the path of both my pokémon’s and Leafeon’s attacks. Psychic and Razor Leaf both hit the hapless Lickitung, causing severe damage. This was no place for a wild pokémon to be! I had to do something before it got hurt even more. Reaching wildly into my pack, I grabbed the first ball I found and hurled it. As the ball closed around the Lickitung, I could see the logo indicating an Aqua Ball.

“You’re too soft!” Toulcus jeered. As the Aqua Ball shook to complete its capture, both Leafeon and Mightyena jumped at Claydol, knocking it out. A dull ‘ping’ rang out from the ball and it disappeared to my storage box. Glaring at our foes, Auri sent Poliwrath into battle beside my Salamence. With an angry roar, Salamence unleashed his mighty Flamethrower, searing the edges of Leafeon’s fur. Defending against special attacks was clearly not its forte, and it looked like one more blast would be enough. The grass-type sliced into Poliwrath with Leaf Blade, but after Salamence’s Intimidate it couldn’t land a solid hit. Auri’s pokémon came out swinging and battered Mightyena with Submission, and the hound lunged at Salamence, injecting its venomous Poison Fang.

Salamence winced from the poison now coursing through his body, but took out Leafeon with another Flamethrower. A second Submission nearly took out Mightyena, but the recoil damage was starting to add up. Shelly took a chance and tried poisoning Poliwrath, but the venom didn’t take hold. Toulcus now sent his final pokémon into the clearing: Rampardos. The wildly powerful brute started with Earthquake, taking both Poliwrath and Mightyena down. My dragon responded with a Scary Face, dropping the revived fossil’s speed. Auri sent her badly wounded Espeon back to try and fight. Shelly was down to just Feraligatr.

Although Espeon had the speed advantage, it was sorely wounded. It shot off a Psychic attack, damaging Rampardos. Salamence tagged Shelly’s gator with Crunch, but took a severe hit from Ice Fang. Toulcus finished Auri’s Espeon with a crushing Head Smash. With Salamence about to faint from poison, I wasn’t sure how we’d pull off the victory. Hope emerged from Auri’s final pokéball.
“Auri, I didn’t know you had a Plusle!” I exclaimed.
“I spent some time in Hoenn, training at their Safari Zone.”
“If I’d known you were in town I’d have dropped in for a visit,” I grinned, “But right now we need to finish this fight. Can Plusle still use Growl?”
“Yes, but if I do that, then Salamence will –”
“Trust me, Auri.”
“Right. Okay, Plusle, use Growl!”

The tiny electric pokémon growled its heart out, reducing Feraligatr’s and Rampardos’ attack power. Feraligatr hit Salamence with another Ice Fang, putting him out of commission. Rampardos launched another Earthquake, but thanks to Growl, Plusle was barely able to hang on. Auri looked at me nervously as I called back my pokémon and sent my last one into battle.

Minun popped out of her pokéball ready to battle, but drew back once she saw the two imposing beasts before her. Auri’s Plusle ran to Minun’s side and offered it a pat of reassurance. The two pokémon stood side by side, ready for our command.
“Plusle!” Auri called out.
“Minun!” I followed.
In unison, we both cried, “Use Thunderbolt!”
Plusle and Minun joined hands and a shower of sparks erupted between them. They loosed a devastating hail of lightning bolts and rained them down on Feraligatr and Rampardos. The overwhelming power of this attack caused the ground around the foes to burst. There was no question that Shelly and Toulcus had lost. Behind the cloud, we could hear them recall their last pokémon, and there were sounds of footsteps moving rapidly away from us.

When the dust cleared, Shelly and Toulcus were no where to be seen. Auri and I exchanged glances. For now, it seemed we were free from pursuit. We swiftly gathered our packs and pressed deeper into the woods. To avoid being tracked, we also took care to erase our trail as we went.

By the time we finally stopped, the sun had set and twilight was beginning to fade. We made camp near a small, clear brook. Neither of us had eaten since the attack (and I’d even missed breakfast this morning). We managed to improvise a decent canned-vegetable soup for dinner. As we ate, there was plenty of time to talk.

“You know, Auri,” I began, “we still need to contact your fiancé and tell him you’re safe.”
“Oh my gosh!” she sputtered, almost dropping her spoon, “That’s right! I’d almost forgotten during the battle.”
“I don’t think it would be safe to contact him directly right now. Where does he live? I’ll send a message to the nearest Pokémon Center.”
“Fuchsia. He has an apartment downtown. We’d planned on his moving to my house after the wedding but now….”
“Fuchsia? So he probably already heard what happened!”
“Well, he lives in the city, but he went up to Silph Co. today. He’s probably just finding out now.” Auri’s eyes filled with sadness and concern.
“Silph Co.? That gives me an idea.” I pulled out my TADS and secured a channel to my Porygon2. “Pory, come in.”
Porygon2 appeared on the screen.
“I need you to send a message to the Fuchsia City Pokémon Center. Encrypt it so that only the recipient can receive the information. Address the message to –” I paused and looked at Auri.
“Rictor. His name is Rictor.”
“–to Rictor. Tell him Auri is safe and she’ll meet him at the Saffron City Pokémon Center.”
Perplexed, Auri asked, “Is that a good idea? I mean, first of all, couldn’t those people trace your message back to us?”
“Not likely,” I reassured her, “Porygon2 is a whiz with communication and data encryption. That line was safe, no question.”
“Okay, that’s a relief. But why Saffron? Shouldn’t I stay someplace harder to find?”
“What better place to hide than in plain sight? As much as I hate to admit it, Giovanni still has a strong influence in Kanto. If you stay in Saffron you’ll be right in his back yard. I’m not keen on the idea, but so far Team Rocket is one group that hasn’t tried to kill us. And after today’s fiasco, I don’t think Toulcus or Shelly will try something like that again, especially not under Giovanni’s nose.”
Her face lit up. “I see what you mean! Good thinking, Thard!”

Later that evening, as we lay gazing up at the serene starry sky, I remembered one last task I had to do. “Auri? I’m… sorry,” I apologized, “I’m sorry for putting you in so much danger today.”
I heard the rustle of her sleeping bag as she rolled to face me. “What are you talking about?” she said with a slight laugh. “You saved my life at least twice today.”
“Yeah, but you wouldn’t have been in danger at all if I weren’t part of Team Aqua.”
“Team Aqua?!” Auri exclaimed. “You’re with those pokémon terrorists? But… but that doesn’t make any sense!”
“We’re not terrorists. All this is because of one man: Guille Hideout. He has a personal grudge with Team Aqua. He used his media empire to blacken our reputation, but even that wasn’t enough. Guille is trying to erase every last trace of the team, including the families and friends of our members.”
“Then that means,…” she gasped as the ramifications sank in, “that means there are more people in danger!”
“I know,” I reassured her, “Everyone on the team set out last night to find and protect their loved ones. Guille won’t succeed, we’ll stop him.”
“Give him one for me, too!” She tried to give a light-hearted laugh while saying this, but that was swallowed up by a sleepy yawn.
“It’s a promise.”

The next day dawned cool and clear. We broke camp after a quick breakfast. While packing, my hand brushed against my pocket and I felt a squareish lump. It was the object I’d picked up from Auri’s house. I pulled it free and took aim. Auri was preoccupied and didn’t notice. “Auri?” I called her attention.
“Hm?” She turned towards me with a smile. I pressed the button on the device, making it flash and click. “Wait, is that? Is that my camera?” Her voice was at once ecstatic and astonished.
“Sure is, Auri. But if you don’t mind, I’d like to hang on to it for a little while. Just until I get a print of this photo. The last one is starting to wear out.”
Her smile broadened as she replied, “Of course. Maybe you should keep them in an album?”
So, she’d kept my picture all these years too. Knowing this made yesterday’s events somehow more satisfying. I tucked the camera back into my pocket and we started north again.

Saffron City finally came into view that afternoon. Looking at the glittering cityscape, I’d never felt quite so glad to find civilization. I knew Auri would be safe soon. At the same time though, I knew we’d soon have to part. When we reached the Pokémon Center, I told her to go in without me. I’d get the photo print and be there in a few minutes. In truth, I didn’t want to intrude on her reunion with Rictor. Even so, I still had to return Auri’s camera, and I wanted to meet her fiancé.

Once I’d finished my errand, I walked back to the Pokémon Center, but didn’t see Auri or her fiancé inside. I wasn’t overly concerned, since the lobby was large and moderately crowded. As I handed my pokémon over to nurse Joy, Auri came walking up to me, side by side with another man. “Hi, Auri,” I said cheerfully, “The photo came out great!” I showed her the picture I’d snapped and handed back her camera.

The man next to her offered me a handshake and said, “So, you’re the one who saved my Auri? I can’t thank you enough!”
“You must be Rictor. I’m Thard. And you don’t have to thank me. Auri’s important to me, too.” Returning Rictor’s handshake, I looked him over and sized him up. Outwardly, there didn’t appear to be anything special about him. He struck me as an average “nice guy” type of person. Yet there was an air of confidence about him, and both strength and gentleness in his handshake. Then I met his eyes. Rictor’s hazel eyes glowed like a summer sunset. At that moment I knew he was the one for Auri.

“No, really!” Rictor continued, “There must be something I can do to thank you for saving Auri’s life.”
I thought about it for a moment before responding. “Okay, if you must, then there are three things I’d like you to do.”
“Name them!”
“First, don’t believe a single word spewing from Guille Hideout’s treacherous lips. He’s the one who ordered the attempt on Auri’s life.”
His eyes widened in horror at this revelation. “Guille… he ordered?”
Nurse Joy returned with my healed pokémon as Rictor tried to digest this news.
“Second,” I continued as I placed my pokéballs back where they belonged, “take good care of Auri. Make her happy. Cherish her with every fiber of your being. She deserves nothing less.”
Rictor glanced at his fiancée and nodded. I turned from the counter and took a step toward the door. “Wait!” he pleaded, “You said there were three things.”
I stopped mid-stride and answered, “And third, I’d appreciate an invitation to your wedding.” With this, I spun back around and smiled at the couple. Auri must have known I’d do that, because as soon as I did so, she took my picture.
The two of them were grinning widely as Rictor replied, “It’s a deal!”

So, for the second time, I walked away from the woman I loved. This time though, I knew she would be happy. “Besides,” I reminded myself, “sometimes when you love someone, you have to let them go.”
