I went in the 'totally wrong' direction. We had to list the Iron Triangle in Japan (In the States it's the Executive branch, the Legislative branch, and the Judicial branch, in Japan it's the Diet, the bureaucracy, and big business) and not only did I get THAT wrong (I forgot bureaucracy) but I said that big business was the most powerful, when it's the bureaucracy.
I blame the professor's timing. We discussed pop culture and entertainment between our discussion on government and the quiz. My brain replaced information on the bureaucracy with fun facts. Like, did you know that the age of consent in Japan is 13, so it's perfectly legal for middle school girls to prostitute themselves for pocket change? And there are more pachinko parlors in Japan than there are middle schools? And Hotel the Glanz between the station and school isn't a normal hotel like I thought, but a love hotel? That one blew my mind.

I've heard both 13 and 14. o___o But I've heard 13 more often than 14.
Prostitution itself isn't legal, but this isn't formal prostitution. It's called enjo kosai, which can be translated to 'compensated dating'. Pretty much, middle and high school girls give out their cell phone numbers or hang around certain urban centers, wait until they're contacted by someone, usually middle aged men, and go out on a date with them for money. Sometimes they just have dinner and talk to them, sometimes they actually put out. Usually it's just for pocket change, since their allowances aren't big enough to buy designer clothes or handbags.

@ If you ever come to Tokyo while I'm here, we should go just to go. 8D My roommate and I keep on meaning to, but she's perpetually broke. And a lot of the cheap ones don't allow people of the same sex, because they think that people looking for a cheap place to stay for the night will take advantage of it. D<
@ Osaka -- Yeah, usually these guys are lonely, and just want someone cute and young to talk to, to make them feel young and desirable again.
In fact, high class prostitutes and escorts often are required to be intelligent and classy themselves. If you're going to pay a lot, you might as well pay for someone who can hold an intelligent conversation.

You get it a lot in cities, too. It's a lonely place, cities. You're expected to work all the time, and when you get home, your kids don't know you and your wife becomes more frustrated having you there than having you gone. I feel bad for Japanese salarymen. They work so hard to meet society's expectations, and it turns out it's an awful way to live.

Of course I know cities are lonely, the Big Apple is, by far, the most screwed up, apathetic american place. Ever. Have the Movies and TV Shows taught us nothing? Seriously, people will smack right into you and keep walking. And that was by word of mouth of someone who lived there for a very long time. Ah, New York isn't all that bad as far as big cities goes. People there are just stresses, but still relatively nice. I've seen worst. Unless it's Cannal Street. That place is awful <<. I was almost molested by a little chinese man who wanted me to go inside his very sketchy looking shop to buy purses >>.
