*Maggie walks along the shelves with him, still clutching his other book in her free arm.* I'm always amazed just by how many books there are here . . .

*Bard strolls through the shelves scanning the titles casually. The books aren't arranged very well, but he's discovered that they don't need to be. The Library, like the rest of the Brink will give a person exactly what they need (though not necessarily what they want) if they concentrate on it long enough.*
Let's start with something familiar. When you were growing up, what was your favorite story?

*Maggie considers that, thinking back for a moment, the memories bringing a smile to her face* My mother always used te tell us the tale about the little cinder girl . . . *she recalls*
Do ye think some of those stories people tell in my time may have been written down?

*he reaches out and selects a book of the shelf and selects an oversized children's book labeled Cinderella. He pages through it*
Well, I can't promise it's quite the same as the version you know, but I'd wager it's the same story, and it's not the Disney version at least. Shall we give it a go?

*Maggie nods again* Oh aye . . . 'tis nice to know that the story has lasted, in some form at least.

*A book chosen, they stroll over to a table and have a seat*
This will probably seem tricky at first, but you'll get the hang of it, I promise.
*he opens the book to the first page* I'm going to read outloud to you, and I'm going to read it slowly so you can see how each letter sounds. Then, I'll have you read it back to me. Okay?

*Maggie sets the other book down on the table to focus on the fairy tale* Aye, alright *she agrees, leaning forward in her seat to study the book, taking in the illustrations first and then focusing on the letters as he starts*

*Bard begins to recite aloud, letting his finger trail under the words*
Once upon a time... in a far away kingdom, there lived a girl of surpassing beauty. Her mother had died and so she lived alone with her father, who loved her very much and doted on her constantly: and they were very happy together....

*Maggie listens attentively, her eyes following his finger over the text as he says it aloud, trying to sort out how the different letters come together to form each word*

*Maggie studies the page a moment more before starting, a look of intense concetration settling on her face* O . . Once . . . up . . upon . . . a . . ti - ime . . . *unsure of herself, she slowly stumbles her way through the words. She's able to sound things out fairly well, though combination sounds trip her up, as do letters like 'c' and 'g' that are pronounced differently depending on the word*

*Bard listens patiently, and when she's finished he says* That was good. Now let's go over each word together to make sure you've got all of them.

*Bard works with Maggie for a number of hours. It's slow going, but he's a patient teacher, and he makes sure she can sound out each word on her own. They work their way slowly through the book*

*Maggie persistently makes her way through the story with him. Putting the letters and sounds together correctly is difficult for her, especially so at the start, but with Bard's help she's able to at least begin to get the hang of it. Eventually, they reach the end of the book*
.. . and frrr . .. from . . . that day for . . . forward. . . . Cinderella and her prince li-ived . . . ha . . . hap . . . happily? *she glances up for confirmation before proceeding* . . . happily e'er af-ter. . .
