Before I make a character chart, is there a certain kind of character that is more needed in our party?

Well, we already have a Cleric, a Sorcerer, a Fighter, and a Bard.
We don't have a Druid, a Wizard, a Rogue, a Ranger, a Monk, or a Paladin.

I'm gonna have to buy the handbook won't I? Well, in any way, since Featauril was supposed to be an Elven Ranger, I guess I'll play my character. Just for kicks.
Featauril is tolkien-esque elven for "Shining Forest Spirit"

Well, you could use the system reference document, but it's very dry and not too newbie friendly.

Well, the local Chapters looks like it's an hour of drive away, let alone getting there when you're car-less then me.
I can do the small bookstores, but this sounds easier. I'll give it a try, it won't hurt me... hopefully.

In that case you should probably use the 3.5 SRD, since they have better rangers.

Did half the town, bought the handbook... in french.
Well, I'm french, and it's the same rules. I should be able to translate well enough.
Question - WEAPON FINESSE [GENERAL] Prerequisite: Base attack bonus +1. Benefit: With a light weapon, rapier, whip, or spiked chain made for a creature of your size category, you may use your Dexterity modifier instead of your Strength modifier on attack rolls. If you carry a shield, its armor check penalty applies to your attack rolls. Special: A fighter may select Weapon Finesse as one of his fighter bonus feats. Natural weapons are always considered light weapons.
Does a long sword count as a "light weapon"?
