Just because water conforms does not mean it is any lesser an element.

"Amaya? That is a lovely name."

Evening rain... The name suited well the child, with her dark hair and eyes. Moreover, in the lands far west, that same name could also mean "a high place". The girl's parents were probably well acquainted with the smaller nuances.

He smiled again, an easy offhand smile, oblivious to the fact that he had unintentionally charmed her.

"Arigatou then, Amaya."

His lingering look on the dojo was wistful, as if there was something more to say, but also he did not know how to give form to the words. Indeed, his mind gave form at that instant to things that could never be.

The smile was faint, almost sad.

A light grumbling interrupted his musing, and he looked at the girl in surprise.

"Ah..."

Right, he had left the hospital at noon. Did she not have lunch yet...? His expression grew greatly concerned, wondering if he should report the Chuunin for abuse to Hokage-sama.

"Amaya-chan... You didn't have lunch?" He mumbled faintly, which made his quiet voice sound even softer.

"Please, don't allow me to keep you any longer." He said, more hastily this time.

The gentle blush remained on the child’s cheeks when Akeru complimented her name. It wasn’t often that she had someone’s attention like she did in that moment. She gave him a courteous head nod when he thanked her so that she could at least acknowledge it. After all, her manners had been atrocious so far. This was a person that Amaya actually wanted to take the time to talk to. Not only was he younger, though not young enough to be down at her level, but he was also a much higher rank than she was. He could be both a valuable source and a potential friend, though the girl was more focused on the second part. She liked him and she greatly enjoyed his company. He was quiet but welcoming all at the same time and it put the girl at ease. That is, until her stomach got in the way.

Not having eaten was her own fault, Amaya had to admit. She was so distracted by the new energy signal that she had ignored her own needs and left her bento box under Sakura’s care. It was somewhat reckless of her, especially with how low her chakra had been, to deny herself nutrition. However, it seemed that she was recovering from the exercises well since she was back up to half of her starting strength already. Then again, she did need to eat, but she also did not want to say goodbye to the visitor yet; she still wanted to see if she could figure out some more about him. Plus, he was cute – that was always a bonus. With a smile to let him know everything was alright, the small girl clutched her hands in front of her. “No, I have not, but that is my doing. I became so distracted with my training that I completely lost track of time.” Amaya wanted to make sure that he understood she hadn’t been forced into a state of hunger and that it was her own doing. His abruptness caught the child slightly off guard when he dismissed her, more or less, but she wasn’t ready to leave her new found company. If Sakura was still training, then Amaya didn’t want to eat in front of her. “Akeru,” The girl started softly, matching his tone, in hopes of getting him to stay. “Would you like to join me for lunch? I have a bento box on the second floor and we could go out the training area to enjoy the sunshine and so we won’t be in anyone’s way if you like? This is, only if you would like some company.” Her invitation was probably naively hopeful, but it would be nice to have some company. While the blush was still lightly on her cheeks, she was able to muster up enough to look up to Akeru’s eyes and smile at him.

"Diligent are we?" That faint smile returned again at her words: he seemed to find amusing satisfaction in her answer. "Training is indeed important, Amaya-chan... But don't neglect yourself." It was quite incredible that he had managed to talk this much with this child. Perhaps it was because she was very similar to him? It may be only a guess, a feeling of similar camaraderie, but this child's pace in life was not one that was too rushed or too abruptly disturbing. The way she had first approached him, the mannerisms, it was something he supposed he could very well welcome should he have the honor to teach her. He wonders faintly if Hokage-sama knew this, and purposefully insisted he teach a squad from this graduating class.

She was not from a known shinobi family either. That was an interesting piece of knowledge. Yet, here she was, creating a place for herself despite this having also been the Academy where giants and the heirs had once walked. He could see her as his student, she would become a fine kunoichi, but more than that, he saw potential in a child like this to become a splendid Eseinin. Yet, her life was young, he would know not to press the field he adores most upon a pupil. Show her perhaps what each field can do, those wondrous techniques, and guide her during the years of choosing.

But still, there were seven students, and it would be unfair for him to insist on choosing whom he wanted. That was fine, when the time comes, whomever the Hokage and the Council deemed suitable, he would accept as equally warmly. Yet, irregardless, he truly hopes... No matter what happens, who will end up with which Jounin, he earnestly prays to the Sun-Goddess that this child will not lose her brightness in the long, hard years ahead. There were difficulties in the journey ahead, difficulties that may cost the unprepared their very minds...

She was also decidedly good at bringing him back from trailing thoughts.

"Yes." He replied.

There was a slight pause, as he seemed to consider his answer, almost as if tasting the word.

"If you won't mind. Though, I already ate at the hospital."

With that, he waited with patience, ready to follow.

“Yes, Akeru,” Amaya began looking shyly off to the side again. “I didn’t want to eat in front of my classmate while she was still training. I thought that to be rude, so I came out to do some investigating instead.” The girl tried to give the best explanation she could. It wasn’t like her to go without eating; she was almost always nibbling on something for that matter. Plus, she wasn’t self conscious about her body image, at least she wasn’t old enough to be; so eating wasn’t a point of embarrassment for her. However, her wandering mind went out the window when Akeru agreed to have lunch with her, even though he had already eaten. “If you don’t mind me eating without you I would greatly appreciate your company.” At this point the small girl had looked up and given the young man the same cute smile she had been; but this time the only pink on her cheeks was from the gentle blushing that she couldn’t seem to get rid of, there was no more color from the tape.

As the two started back down to the training arena, Amaya excused herself and slipped into the classroom where Sakura was still working on her Nawanuke no Jutsu. The small girl quietly crossed the room as she smiled at her pink haired classmate. “Sakura-san,” her voice was its usual quiet, but it didn’t hold the hesitation it normally did. She had grown comfortable speaking to Sakura. “I apologize, but I am going to take my lunch to spend some time with a visitor.” This she said as she was picking up her lunch. “Otherwise I would happily stay here with you.” She wasn’t trying to make excuses, but she did want to talk to Akeru more and she was going to have to leave if she wanted to eat anyways. It was just rude for her to eat in front of someone when they were bound. “I would undo a knot for you or take the tape off, but it is an unfortunate part of the exercise, I hope you understand.” The child tucked the bento into her pack as she gave her friend and apologetic glance. “However, I will tell you another thing that helped me.” Maybe Sakura would be more forgiving or understanding if Amaya helped a little more. “Instead of trying to pull the rope through the knot, I pushed the base back through and that seemed to help me. It may not have the same result for you, but it might help.” At that she strode back over to the door, turning back to Sakura. “Best of luck and I will see you at afternoon lessons.” She gave the girl a smile and a gentle wave as she slipped back out the door. Amaya figured she had been quiet enough not to bother people in the hall.

The child returned to Akeru so that they could go to the arena and Amaya could eat her lunch.

Closing her eyes, she rested a little more in the silence that ensued. It was very comforting, until the two signatures that had left came back again. Blearily opening her eyes again, she sat up as well as she could before Amaya came in. She proceeded to take her bento, telling her that she wanted to go eat with the other person. She didn't mind very much since Sakura realized that it was going to take a long time for her to finish, and gladly nodded her consent. Amaya gave her a helpful hint as to how she could get out of the bonds, so Sakura also tried her best to show her thanks for the little tip. If she could only finish a little faster, she could go and eat with them once she was out of the ropes. But then, she had promised Yae to eat together, and the two sides warred with each other, fighting for dominance. Not being able to make up her mind, she decided to wait until the situation somehow resolved itself so that she wouldn't have to make the choice herself. Sighing, Sakura shifted her weight to her left and leaned against the wall again for some comfort. The ropes had loosened a bit after her rest, so she hoped they would be easier to get out of once she got her chakra back. Stomach growling for her bento, Sakura focused on the strands of her hair, fingering them where they touched the tips of her fingers, out of boredom. If only some other students would get tossed in the room and give her something to laugh at...

Still pondering over the decision as to whom she should eat with, Sakura sighed and shifted slightly. She had been sitting a little rigidly for quite a while since it was part of her upbringing, but for a little girl, it hurt! Back aching, Sakura checked her chakra pool, and she figured she had about half her chakra back in her reserves. Gosh they filled up slowly. Imagining dango sticks flying around her, she tried to ignore the good smell of the bento. Even if there was one less box, the strength of the smell didn't decrease at all. She wasn't desprate yet, but if worst came to worst, she would really break the windowpane and cut her way through, by golly. Shoulders sagging a little, Sakura stared outside, hoping to finish this project soon.

Thinking, Sakura made a compromise. Since the two would probably be finished with their lunch by the time she had gotten out of her ropes, she would join them and talk for a bit and then eat with Yae once she was done with the Nawanuke no jutsu. 'That sounds like a plan.' she chanted to herself as she started fiddling with the knots again. She'd have to be careful to get there once they were finished with their bento though. It would be inconsiderate of her to go in without eating while they were and make the situation awkward for everyone. Also, once they were finished, it would tempt her less and distract her from thinking about her own meal. 'A promise made will have to be kept, no matter what!' she thought as Yuki decided then and there to do just that. Soon enough, she would have enough chakra to start the sessions again. Testing the waters, she tugged a little on the ropes just a little. Because she had been able to get 5 off, they seemed a little more loose. Or was it her imagination? Whatever the case was, she just hoped her next endeavors would be as fruitful as the last one.

"That's very considerate of you." Came his quiet reply, as he evaluated her reasons for not eating sooner. It would appear that the Chuunin instructor had purposefully baited the children with the desire to reach lunch sooner, in order to give them a reason to finish the Nawanuke technique. He supposed it was fair, to provide an incentive for children, even if he didn't quite agree with the method.

From the dojo on the third floor, they returned down to the second floor.

Akeru stood outside, waiting, as Amaya-chan darted into the room to fetch her lunch. Even with her gone as briefly as it was, the whole atmosphere seem to quiet: he thought to himself that working in the hospital has done him much good. He was getting used to people again, considering how when he first arrived in Konoha a little more than two years ago, he had avoided human contact like the plague. But since the years of his childhood, wasn't that the very reason his godparents were proud of Konoha...? For the village's ability to open up the children.

She returned, and Akeru gave her a shyly hesitant smile, before standing aside and allowing her to lead the way. He wonders where would be her favorite place to eat, the Academy didn't have a dining hall, most of the children probably went home for lunch or into the village to buy food. He supposed there were also a few good spots here and there to enjoy a meal, and a classroom was always an option.

Yuki contemplated her best way of approach to the ropes. Amaya-san had given her a couple of hints, so she would gladly use those to see if they would help. After that, she would just have to improvise and work it out. It was considerate of the teacher to tie up only her arms and hands though she guessed, because it wasn't a full body bind which would have been obnoxiously hard to get out of. That would have been very trying, at the very least. She wondered if all of this applied as intentional torture of under-aged people, because it sure felt like it. Sitting back up again, she fumbled with the knots, ready to try it again and join the others in their freedom.

The shy smile extended to her made the small child glad as she once again took the lead. It wasn’t often that she had the chance to decide where she went and she had been enviously staring out the window all day. Amaya stayed close to Akeru but far enough ahead to make following her easy. Once they were down the stairs, the child pulled open the door to the training arena out behind the school with the training dummies and the running track. As soon as the sun hit her skin, the girl paused to take in the surroundings; this was her first day at the academy after all. Quickly scanning the surrounding area, Amaya spotted a bench in the corner underneath the shade of a tree. It was one of those convenient things. Looking back at Akeru to make sure he wasn’t favoring any particular place, but it seemed that he was giving her the reigns to choose. It was incredibly polite of him, so she wouldn’t drag him too far; though down to the first floor may have been too far. Smiling at him before she started off, Amaya walked under the shade of the tree. Content with the cool of the shade on that particularly warm day, the young girl had a seat in the grass next to the bench. While she preferred the ground, she also wanted to leave either option available for her companion. Looking up, Amaya gave the young man another smile before pulling her bento box out of her pack.

“Akeru-sama,” this time Amaya started using her honorifics since she knew what his rank was. She should have been using it the whole time, but she had been so wrapped up in the new person and being embarrassed that she had once more forgotten her manners. “May I ask what you were doing at the academy before I came by?” While her question may have sounded rude or suspicious, she felt that she had grounds to ask it. After all, he couldn’t be a teacher because he didn’t know his way around the academy or what was there. Plus, it was obvious that he had no idea who Ko-sensei was and she assumed that the majority of the teachers would know who one another were.

8 + 2 + 1 = 11 Pass
Amaya

Trying the knots, she found that they had loosened a little during her wait because they had been sliding down little by little. Grasping for the knot, Sakura followed Amaya's lead and crossed her arms around, moving and twisting them to get them out of the unreachable zone. Finally, after some time, they shifted downwards until she could reach them, just barely. Trying to get it free, she moved and twisted the rope, feeling the cords as they looped around. Getting a hang for how it was tied, she then proceeded to catch the protruded knot and pull on it, gradually getting it loose, and pulled the rest of the length of the rope through to get it free. She had almost failed, but it had worked in the end. Glad that she had made it through another one, she silently congratulated herself for not giving up when it seemed hard. It was another trait of a shinobi that would need to show through in times of dire need. Hopefully, she would be able to show the same determination out in the field too.

So she chose that secluded courtyard. It was a good choice too, he thought, what would a meal be anyways without some sun? The spring weather was also fair, a gentle breeze stirred about the courtyard, curling about the tree branches overhead and filling the courtyard with a serene rustle. As tendrils of sunlight bathed his pale skin, and gave it a soft glow, he closed his eyes part-way, enjoying the weather. Truly, it was wonderful that the winter chill had come and gone.

There was an ancient oak in the courtyard, providing a nice umbrella of shade, perhaps most welcome in the later months of spring. A bench was set beneath the tree, large enough for at least four small bodies to sit evenly side by side. The Academy probably wanted to promote interactions between the children. He didn't take a seat by her so as to not startle her, merely removing the strap holstering the nodachi to his back and dropping his weapon to the ground. With that, he stretched a little by reaching with both hands for the sky, allowing the tense muscles on his back to relax.

She spoke again, and he looked to her, raising a fine brow at the sudden "sama".

"San is all right." Came the quiet chuckle. "'Sama'...is more appropriate for my sempais. Among the Jounin... I am too young and inexperienced."

He tilted his head lightly aside at her next inquiry.

"Ah. I didn't arrive for too long." He paused. "If I waited...the students would return."

And so he opted to patiently wait outside one of the many classrooms, until signs of inhabitance stirred.

"I am here because..."

With a movement of swift grace, he picked up his nodachi from the ground by the holster strap.

"...Hokage-sama requested for me to instruct the first three graduates." He stated calmly. "I was wondering what this year's students would be like."

The child nibbled at her bento box while the man stretched and replied. She kept her bites small so that she would be in a position to reply whenever the time calmed for it. Gently, the breeze tickled the back of her neck, lifting strands of hair to float around wistfully. Her shoulders lifted and she smiled at the sensation, trying to block the strands from brushing against the back of her neck. It took a little shake of her head, but eventually her hair began floating in a different direction. Amaya’s ears perked up when she heard him chuckle; it made her happy that he was beginning to feel more comfortable. The child stole a glance at the weapon he placed on the ground, simply because she wanted to know what kind it was. Ah, a nodachi. Her father had shown her how to make one once, but she wouldn’t be able to replicate it. It was a fairly large weapon and, if she remembered correctly, it was for use against larger, open groups. She would have to ask about that next.

Oh? Amaya was oddly excited about the idea that he would be teaching the next three graduates. She would like having him as a sensei. Then again, if it was for the first three students then she probably wouldn’t be in that group since she had only started that day. She nodded as she took in the information. “So, Akeru-san,” the girl started slowly, gently tapping her bottom lip with her chopsticks as she thought. “If the Hokage requested that you take this assignment, that means…” she bit her lip lightly, making sure that her thinking was straight. “You do not normally take on genin squads. What do you normally do, then? I mean, I would guess by your nodachi that you work in the field in some way.” Amaya thought that her train of thought may have been stretched a little, but in all made some sort of sense in her head regardless of if it made sense once it was spoken. “Oh, and you’re welcome to sit down if you like, Akeru-san.” Amaya knew that with how shy she was he would be hesitant to act so comfortably. After all, that is how she thought and acted on a regular basis.

3 + 2 + 1 = 6 Fail
Amaya

This time, trying Amaya's hint, Sakura pushed the base through the knot, trying to get it out to the other side to untangle. What she didn't expect was a sudden mess in the length of rope. Up until now she had been keeping track of what end was where, but with that little trick, she was now successfully tangled up in a mess, losing track of what went where. 'Maybe that hadn't been a good idea,' she thought, as she tried to send chakra through the length of rope to figure out how it was tied up. It seemed that she had maken a double knot by pushing it through the other side, so Yuki began the tideous task of getting the knot back to it's original state. The chakra that was sent through had given her a mental image of how it wsa formed, and now she just needed to apply the correct method to get it loose. After a while, the knot gave, and she finally was back to square one. She only had 4 more left though, so she was feeling a little better. It was going a lot better than the chakra molding, which she had now gotten down. It was for the best, since the molding was a crucial part of this exercise anyway. More trial and error would help her develop and help her to succeed under high pressure and dire times.

"That is correct." Came his serene agreement as he replaced the sword holster, before he flipped the nodachi to rest the hilt against his shoulder, the longer portion of the sheath extending balanced by the nook of his arm. "I am an eseinin -- we usually do not lead Genin squadrons." After all, the most precious lives of the village rested in their hands. Eseinin were rare to spare, a factor he found out only after walking his godmother's footsteps.

"Hokage-sama's request...is because we are understaffed. Most of the Jounin..." He added quietly. "...are probably on missions in the south."

He took a seat next to her with that same eerie grace, not a sound betraying his movement, the only testimony that he had moved at all being the stray young leaf that had been torn from the branches by the wind and scattered before him. There was a certain manner that he held himself which held graceful pride, noticeable better now that the nervousness had passed, a kind of royal dignity that seemed to demark him from his surroundings. The nodachi laid with a restful ease against his shoulder.

"Are you disappointed?" He remarked, his tone oddly curious.

He paused a little, almost as if thinking about his next words.

"Even though our duty is to protect as many precious lives possible... We can fight. After all, if the eseinin falls, who would guard their comrades' lives?"

There was a ferocity to his words now.

"And so, we cannot let ourselves be the first to fall."
