Ah, there it was--the green had found the right note, and her chosen stumbled forward to greet her with evident happiness. Alumanth's firstborn had chosen well, it seemed, and even the new queenpair had come out to greet them. If the Hatching had ended here, Akaya would've called it a happy ending--but there were still more eggs (no doubt requiring the Weyrwoman's shovel) and the mood could still be changed entirely. There was still that angry egg to go as well--justifiably angry, perhaps, in hindsight, though it was a silly thought. Dragons could do amazing things, even speak mind-to-mind, but they could not foresee the future.

Hmmn, yes, that was as it should be. A girl should be grateful for the opportunity Impress a Green. It was the only color besides Gold (and Crimson, he acknowledged grudgingly) that they were truly suited for. S'raid watched the pair for a moment before his eyes turned to the remaining eggs. Would these eggs require that shovel, too? He didn't care for it, much. It seemed a barbaric practice, as far as Galvanth was concerned, and he wasn't sure that he disagreed. But yet there was the point of view that such creatures would never find their use if they weren't let out of their eggs. If they all persisted in being as disgraceful as that one Crimson dragonet, he didn't know that he'd much mind that, however.
Galvanth rumbled, echoing Serlaith's bugle, pleased that the little one had found her match. It was well, and the Queen's interest in her adoptive sister was becoming. Sitting back on his haunches, he observed them all, determined that more normal colors should come from those eggs. It was entirely inappropriate to crack dragonets from their shells, and surely all would know that by now. If more natural colors appeared, perhaps he could see his way to approving a little more of the Crimsons. ... But that was yet to be determined. He hadn't decided yet what he thought of that. Moira is in high spirits, he informed his rider unnecessarily, and S'raid only grimaced.

There the little green had impressed and things seemed to be moving along again, though the rest of the eggs seemed quite still and likely required help to hatch as the crimson had. Plexith however seemed a tad irritated at the green and D'lin...V'in? D'vlin..he hadn't really decided yet patted him absently before trying to entice him to eat yet another piece of meat "Don't know why she bothered running back and forth like that" The little bronze snorted "Such a waste of time and completely disorganized" He further ranted. "Well she found her's now Plexith..so things are back on track" He reminded the bronze and the little dragon must have agreed as he ate the bit of meat - obviously deciding it was good enough for him.

"Good girl," La said softly, smiling as the little dragonet finally found who she was looking for. And then her attention turned back to the eggs. It looked like Abigail was going to need her shovel, but she had to admit, she was concerned that not all of the eggs were going to be intact atypicals. And that wouldn't be pleasant for the spectators, would leave a bitter taste in Benden's mouth, and would probably upset the younger Candidates. But...it was what needed to be done, and a bit of squeamish upset was probably all for the best, since it let dragons live. Life was life, and sometimes you had to be inconvenienced to save a few.
But she did hope Abigail would get on with it. There were only five eggs left, and if she wasn't going to Impress this time around (which she had matter-of-factly decided was the case), then she had more important things to do. Like getting back to the real chores that she should have been doing instead of Candidate gruntwork.

What seemed like an eternity after the green had cracked from her shell an impressed started to pass, the eggs on the sands from the Crimson's clutch silent. There were hushed whispers amongst those in the stands and some even on the Sands despite withering glares from both the Candidatemaster and the Weyrwoman. O'rer's mood was souring the more and more they got into this despite how healthy the dragonets from this clutch were appearing to turn out, but that was beside the point. His opinion didn't matter - the Weyrwoman's and the dragonets themselves were what mattered.
If enough time had passed that the woman was ready to raise her shovel and check again, it seemed that whatever was inside two of the remaining five eggs seemed to agree. With violent shakes, enough to roll themselves both away from their fellow clutchmates, both the Raindrop Egg and the Starshine Egg separated and from their shells emerged two vibrant, if not loud, dragonets. The Starshine had produced a green, eagerly on her feet and trotting around in place with as much gusto as a certain brown dragonet the Sands had seen earlier, while the Raindrop had given up a rather lovely looking blue.
The dragonets took one look at each other before giving a greeting trill, their eyes whirling happy with greens and blues. Here we are Weyr, look at us!

More and more are hatching. Why are some grumpy that the girls Impressed blues? I know who exactly I wanted. You are mine. Daroth asked Nasumyi, eyes closed but still keeping a mental ear on things.
Nasuymi shrugged. She personally didn't care for what anyone thought and hadn't for a long time. At least, not what her peers thought. As far as her elders and those in position, as long as they kept her in a good light, she would be just fine. Scratching her head, she looked over at the other girl who had Impressed a blue as well as the boy who was now the rider of that lovely crimson. "I dunno. The' kin shove off fer all I care. Yer right, Daroth. Me an' you is all tha' matters."
Will we meet the others?
Nasuymi, N'ymi she would have to start thinking of herself like that shrugged. "If'n you wan' too but there will be food for me later."
I am not making you starve am I? "Nah, my belly works diff'nt tha' yers does. You just rest."

She'd Impressed.
Kiipa gave an obvious sigh of relief, relaxing her grip on her robes in the process. Thank Faranth she'd found what she was looking for. Judging by the expression on the girl's face who was with her, she was as relieved as all the rest. For the first of the Crimson's clutch that was a bit worrisome, but at least she had found Hers in the end. The girl could only hope for the same fate for the rest of the eggs.
Before the Weyrwoman's shovel could come into play again, two more dragons decided that it was their time to shine. A green and a blue, both quite vibrant. And happy too! Were they greeting each other? That was so cute! Kiipa's mood brightened instantly as she watched to see where the dragons were going.

Ah, looked like Abigail wouldn't get to use her shovel quite yet! Jala eyed the two new dragonets approvingly. They were both in good spirits, at least! And they were friendly, too. Good sizes, good color... It looked like the late Crimson could rest easy; her children were beautiful.
Jalarant looked towards his other candidates, wondering who they'd Impress to. There were quite a few girls on the sands; they'd probably head over that way. Or, as the odds had gone today, they'd go towards the stands. Had it been three now, or four, who had went that way? If the Weyr continued to Impress dragons like this, it would be better to have everyone in attendance of age head onto the sands!

It looked like more entrances were to be made before the shovel could intervene again! The starshine egg's (that had been the sweet one, Akaya remembered) green occupant looked like she was rather enjoying herself and the blue was just as active in deed as its egg had been in thought. And how they greeted one another! Akaya resisted an impulse to run and squeeze them both--for one thing, it would almost certainly alarm the dragonets, and for another thing, the Candidatemaster would have her hide for it. But after the happy Impression of their sister, and these two and their clear happiness--Alumanth's clutch was turning out well indeed.

D'vas was the sort of man who was rarely touched by anything other than his dragon. After all, there wasn't all that in life that wasn't cloying, or stuffy, most 'touching' emotions were in fact utterly ridiculous! It was, though he would never quite admit it out loud, that Hatchings got him almost every single time. The green that had wailed and gone between had even earned a small rumble from Jivith, though it had been small. Benden was not trying to call attention to itself, but the blue had informed him that mourning a life was not drawing attention to itself. After all, hadn't he also mourned Alumanth briefly?
But the one that truly touched the decadence-minded D'vas was the latest green from the Crimson's clutch. It would be a pain and half to be ferrying the healers to poke and prod at these new dragonets, something that he didn't think any of them needed to be subjected to. But then, nobody ever asked a bluerider what he thought!
The sight of the sobbing young woman on the sands, all but tumbling over her own feet to get arms around the brilliantly-marked, tiny green brought a bit of watering to his eyes. That was all how it should be, how it felt, what they all wanted to do inside. Some did whoop and holler, but they were usually bronzeriders. Again, he reached out to Jivith, and almost started laughing again. That great head turned to fix his rider with a blue eye, and a mild tone in his voice.
She is a very pretty green, I would not mind chasing her. When she is older.
-----
Sheridan, for his part, had mostly been talking his rather nervous dragon into eating, and then cleaning up after him when he did. It seemed that Violith rather enjoyed an overturned bucket, and he had immediately gone seeking for an empty so that the brown might kick it about with his tail while he ate. He'd been told that dragons were usually low-energy after a Hatching, so this enjoyment of disarray on a normal day would be...interesting. Well. Mali might get a kick out of it!
Thinking of her had his head swiveling around to watch his clusmy Weyr friend through several Impressions, feeding Violith who had also turned an eye to find out what his rider was so very intent on, just as Malina's green reached out to her. Ah, a green! She seems very happy, but you did not cry. Whirling eyes turned to look up at Sheridan's strong face, then back at the pair now moving across the Sands I am glad you did not cry. It is not suitable, mine. Sheridan, of course, was only grinning. From what he'd heard of the smallest breed of traditional dragon, Malina was perfectly suited. Maybe now she would start being more confident and fall over less?
He somehow hoped not!
"Mali! Malina! Oh. Should I call you something else now? Oh well, we can deal with that later. You Impressed! I knew you could do it, once Violith came over to me. If I can Impress you can Impress, cuz lets face it, even if you're clumsy and not that confident, there's still a chance!" A strong arm came around the slight young woman and picked her up in a crushing hug as both green and new rider came to the meat. Sheridan was, perhaps, a bit overpowering at times.
Violith, peering around, was calm and polite. Hello Bonth. Mine, set hers down so that she might eat, she is very hungry. There was nothing more important than eating, he felt. Eating, and perhaps being in a nice pile of straw that was disarrayed just so...it would be the very best!

No.
But S'raid!
No.
S'raid, I would not harm them, I only want to--
Absolutely not.
Turning to fix his apparently overly sentimental Bronze with a quelling glare, S'raid made certain that the great beast did not fly down to nuzzle the new hatchlings. I said no, Galvanth, and that is final. He was absolutely dead serious. They were not going to send the Weyr into hysterics because oh Faranth that Benden Bronze was coming near the Crimson's clutch! No. Galvanth could keep his nesting instincts to himself, and remain precisely where he was. I swear, Galvanth, if you disobey me in this, you will not like the result. Surely no one else had to deal with so troublesome a dragon. Surely he was the only one cursed in this way. Grumbling, he stared down at Moira, who had decided to buddy up to the new Greenrider. She was only encouraging Galvanth, who crooned at the dragonets all the more. He sighed, and kept his peace, one hand clenched into an irritable fist as he watched the proceedings.

Two down, three more to go.
Ofelia was watching the eggs with the same mild interest as before, her mood going up and down with the heat of the day and the energy of the crowd. As before she still wanted to go back to her vat and finish what she'd started, at this rate the leather she was coloring would turn out to be black before it was all over, and next to her she was pleased to see that even her brother was fanning himself slightly. A puckish grin spread over her face as she poked the man in the ribs, only to be rewarded with a grin that matched her own and a poke back.
"When this is over, can we get somethin' ta eat? Watchin' the dragons tear inta that raw meat is makin' me hungry somethin' fierce."
She got a nod in reply and let out a small 'yesssss' as her response, hands mildly punching the air in victory. Now all that needed to happen was the rest of the hatching, obviously.
"GO DRAGONS GO. IMPRESSSSS."

Viskal sighed and closed his eyes for a moment when the green Impressed. Relief. For a moment he’d started to worry the dragon was going to go between as that other one had. He’d be glad when this affair ended. He wasn’t one for sentimentality, but that last death had seemed unjust and infuriatingly senseless. He’d gnash his teeth over it he hadn’t been so worn from the day’s events and the hatching. Maybe later. Now two more were breaking from their shells onto the sands. A healthy looking pair. He rolled his shoulders and wondered which ways they would wander.
---
K’la sighed, shifting a little nervously. It wouldn’t be long before the traditional colors ran out and that blasted shovel would make another appearance. Really, she thought, what an undignified way to end a hatching.
Yvoth, who had been curiously eyeing the crimson hatchling since it’s first wobbly step across the stands, glanced into the stands at her rider. Babies are always undignified, mine. Even natural habits are not always pretty. she spoke privately in a soothing way. It seemed to mollify her rider to a degree, and she glanced at Galvanth, eyes whirling as she made guesses about the purpose of his posture. She usually tried (and often failed due to her overly bubbly nature) to avoid speaking with the bronze out of respect for his rank, but she did so now in a sweet, subservient way. She was too pleased over watching a hatching to be bothered by their Trine guard or Galvanth’s color. It might be easier to look at them later when everyone is less excited, she suggested.

As content as they would have been to just keep cheering at one another, glad to be with one another from their shells, the blue and green knew that they needed to find theirs, knew that their lifemates were out on the sands waiting. With a trill towards the green and a nudge of his head it seemed as though the blue was encouraging her to go first, to let her find Hers before he found His, though an equally happy but certainly louder croon from from the green indicated he was to go first. To prove this point she turned away from their little gathering and moved back towards the eggs, waiting very close to the spot where she'd been resting inside her shell. With something akin to a roar that sounded awfully like she was cheering, the green urged the blue onward.
Not wanting to take his clutchmate's support for granted the blue snorted and started off towards the boys in slow and steady steps. It seemed to be a common theme of this clutch, to takes its time in deciding who they wanted, but this blue was far more certain then the green who'd hatched earlier. He knew His was amongst the boys, there was no mistake, it was only a matter of finding out where they were in the crowd. There were many faces out there that all seemed so happy, so welcoming, and some he greeted with a chirp as he passed, though he did not stop to acknowledge them as his own.
Meanwhile the little green shook herself where she stood to get the rest of the egg goo from her wings, her eyes merry as she continued that weird roar-cheer for her clutchmate. Go go go!

Akaya had briefly wondered if they'd continue half the day with their "you first", "no you first!" routine, but luckily the sweet green nipped the problem right in the bud by sitting herself right where she'd been in the egg...and was that cheering? It was definitely cheering! It was an adorable sight, and Akaya knew it had already topped the list of "things to write songs about" second only at this moment to singing dragons and dragons who loved Harpers. The blue seemed quite sure of his choice lying in the ranks of the boys as he searched, and his green sister continued her cheer...and Akaya suppressed more urges to squeal with delight. Too cute, too cute!
