Mrs. Katan looked slightly surprised to be included in this particular conversation, sitting back a bit and looking the couple over. "I'm not sure I'll be of much use. If you want to keep it simple, I won't be too helpful." She planned big, and couldn't exactly help with only one or two details of a wedding, especially when it was her own daughter's. That wasn't to say she didn't know some people who knew some people that might help with the planning of weddings.
The servants exchanged the plates of salad with ones with thick t-bone steaks marinated to perfection on them.

Rory looked at the steak. This was much better fare than he was used to eating at the carnival. He ate slowly, savoring it. At Mrs. Katan's words, he looked up at her. "Who's t' say it has t' be simple? Some handfastin's are an' some ain't. It's Lee's weddin'. Guess it should be howe'er she wants, yeah?"

Lee's parents gave each other a look, a pleased yet scheming sort of look, and suddenly Mrs. Katan was much more interested in helping out. "You wouldn't mind if I called for a wedding planner, would you? I have a man in mind, he did wonders for a friend. Herbert, you remember, right?" Her husband nodded. "Anyway, he's quite expensive, I'm not sure that's what you were looking for." Traditional didikai weddings weren't her expertise, and she wasn't going to spend all that money if they wanted something simple.
Lee worked on her steak, not particularly loving or hating it, and turned to Rory for a moment. "You wouldn't be embarrassed, right? I don't want it to be 'fancy' or whatever if you don't... Your mom wouldn't mind, would she? I don't want her to be disappointed..."

Rory sat quietly for a moment, having the small feeling he was being roped into something. He sighed softly and looked at Lee, smiling. "You hae th' weddin' you want, lover. It's your day. Just . . . talk t' Mum an' Annie an' Keagan, okay? You can hae a fancy weddin' an' still hae it be traditional." He looked at Mr. Katan. "How, um, how would I get th' papers fae it t' count as an outsider weddin', too?"

Lee grinned to herself before looking up at Rory and nodding excitedly. "I just want it to be pretty." Playing with her food for a bit, she started thinking more about what she might want; what color combinations, what kind of dress to wear, how she might wear her hair...
Mr. Katan looked a bit startled, then smiled faintly to the boy. "That... might take some extra paper work, you both being minors at the moment... But I'll look into it for you, if that's what you want." He ignored his wife's slight pout, wanting to remind her that, if they have kids, there wouldn't be the possibility of b*****d children in the family. "I'm not entirely sure it'll be ready in a month, though. These things might take longer."

"Well, w' can see how long it'll take an', if need be, w' can push th' weddin' back," Rory said only slightly reluctantly. "I just want it done right, fae both of us." He moved a hand to rest it on Lee's.
Jeremy glanced at their hands and did a double-take. "Holy crap. What is up with your hand?" It came out ruder than he'd wanted, but you couldn't blame the guy's shock.
Rory quickly moved both hands to his lap, blushing from shame, but not quick enough that everyone in the room didn't get a good look at his deformities first.

Lee glanced around the table to see that everyone seemed to be looking at Rory. Reaching over, Lee took his hand again, interlacing her fingers in his.
Mrs. Katan did get a good look at them, not having noticed somehow until just now. Jeremy seemed to have asked the question she was wondering, and didn't find it necessary to repeat it, instead looking at Rory rather calmly, not looking at all surprised. She had bigger problems to worry about than the boy's fingers, though. Like, say, he was poor as dirt and marrying her daughter. That was a bit more important, yeah.
"Just something that runs in the family, apparently." Mr. Katan seemed to be growing used it, glaring a bit at how Jeremy had put it. He reminded himself, though, that he should be thankful there was no actual fighting.

"It's from th' fae blood in me family. Small price t' pay fae th' other gifts w' got outta tha' union," Rory said, shrugging. "My family used t' be mediums in th' carnival. Somewhere along th' generations, w' decided t' take o'er th' stables an' horse trainin'. Prolly because less o' us were bein' born wi' th' proper abilities fae bein' mediums, but w' still all hae th' same hands."

Lee blinked up at him, having thought he wasn't going to tell her parents yet. Or ever.
Mrs. Katan tilted her head a bit, setting her utensils down for a moment. "Medium? You mean to say people in your family talk to the dead?" Wow, the didikai were certainly a superstitious group, weren't they?

"Once upon a time, yeah," Rory said, shrugging. "W' ain't mediums anymore. W're just stable hands an' horse trainers now." He gave Lee's hand a squeeze, but was looking at her father to see if he'd say anything, colorless eyes boring into the man.

Mr. Katan looked from the boy to his wife, then back to Rory. "So it... doesn't really show up in later generations? There's no possibility of Lee's children having those gifts?" He was playing dumb, but was curious to know whether or not one of his grandchildren would end up with these "abilities" Rory was talking about.
Mrs. Katan resumed her meal, assuming Rory was just telling tales to either impress Lee or intimidate Jeremy.

Rory shrugged. "It's not as common as it wis. W' ne'er really know when someone's gonna get born wi' it. Usually can tell reet after birth, though."

"Oh? And how can you tell?" He couldn't help but smirk a bit as he asked, not really expecting Rory to answer as honestly as he could.
Lee interrupted her father, answering for Rory. "I heard it had something to do with the all black eyes, right?" She didn't want Rory to give away any information he didn't want others knowing.

"White eyes, Lee. Th' people in me family wi' it are born wi' white eyes," Rory said, still looking at Lee's father. There was a sort of silent communication there of "this is who I am."

Lee bit her lip, looking down at her plate instead of at her parent's faces, working on her steak a bit even though she'd lost her appetite a while ago. So, he wanted them to know.
Mrs. Katan cocked a smile, as if it were some kind of joke. "Your eyes are pretty white, Rory. You sure you don't talk to ghosts?" She almost chuckled, but wasn't the type to laugh at her own joke.
Mr. Katan gave Rory a surprised look, not having expected the boy to admit something like that in front of Jeremy. He resumed his meal, as well, though didn't take his eyes off the boy as he ate, somewhat admiring how honest he was.
