kingpinsqeezels The last boy I dated was a non-practicing Jew. His mother was raised Jewish, and practiced until they moved to Arkansas. He was an okay boyfriend, but I never really had much boyfriend experience, so I always assumed boys would be boys when he'd do something stupid. Anyway, the last few months of our relationship, I stopped feeling the same about him due somewhat to the fact that he let his mother control his life. She was always hateful towards me, and I don't think she ever really liked the fact that I was trying to convert. She would always tell him I was stupid, and other such things. He would never stop her though, so he's just as bad as she is. But anywho, there aren't too many Jewish boys my age here, so I'm pretty much left with boys who are protestant and Catholic. I am okay with that, but I really want to marry a liberal Jew someday. I think that would be best. instead of going off on the "parent's fault" tangent, hows about we look at this from a different angle? a child's behaviour reflects the parent's personality, even the parts that don't show, and vice versa. if the mother was such an a**, chances are the son would also have similar qualites. when one marries, one joins a family. so think about it. why would one want an unloving family? respect for one's parents is one of one's most sacred duties (for lack of a better term, anyway). very little comes before that. if i could point out one defining difference between jewish and non-jewish life, that would be it. respect for one's parents. after all, one owes one's parents everything. without them, one would be nothing at all. so maybe poeple shouldn't be so quick to disregard the opinions of their parents, or make use of the "changing times" pretense.

Ahh, well you have a good point. But I just don't know if I agree that you should respect your parents even when they're bashing the one you love. That isn't far. I wasn't blaming her completely either. I realize I'm not exactly the sharpest tool, but she didn't have to put these ideas in his head that I'm not good enough for him. Oh well though, that's over...and I'm happy.
