"Well...." Lore pretended to think about it before cracking a smile at that, "Unless they have foresigh or what would normally considered to be wishful thinking when they're decorating the house. Chances are the baby will have to stay with us for the first few weeks we're back."
Or so... depending on how lot it took to get everything together.

"Not that that's necessarily a bad thing," Elnara giggled at the look on Lore's face. "We could have a cradle made for him - or her - and let them sleep at the foot of our bed, or something ... somewhere close but safe ..."
She squeezed his hand excitedly as they walked. "What do you hope it will be?" she asked him brightly. "Boy or girl?"

"I haven't really thought about it," Lore admitted.
Though when he really thought about it, in truth he couldn't decide. It wasn't like he had any preference really. A boy would be nice... true, but so would a girl. As long as he could teach that child it wouldn't matter.
"I don't... really have a preference."

Elnara smiled and squeezed Lore's hand tightly.
"Neither do I," she murmured happily. Then she added as an afterthought, "But if it's a girl I hope she doesn't have to go through the things that I did. No one should have to."
She bit her lip anxiously. "Maybe I should try shapeshifting a bit, so that the baby will be a shapeshifter, and then they can protect themselves," she worried quietly. "I mean ... there are worse things than being different ... from everyone else ..."

Lore nodded looking thougthful before pointing out another aspect about being different, "And to be honest... we'll be mainly living in Gaia."
And he didn't think they were going to go travelling to the isolated parts of Gaia or to places where there would be one main race. If their children did... well he would make sure to give them far warning in advance.
"They wouldn't be that different... it would be a rare gift yes, but there would be stranger people out there... I assure you."
And even then those people didn't have any trouble just living their daily lives.

"That's true," Elnara agreed thoughtfully. "Though here ... even if he or she isn't a shapeshifter ... they'll still be different ... simply for what they are ... half of this world, and half not ... truly the first of their kind ..."
She smiled bravely. "But unless someone makes a problem out of it deliberately, there shouldn't be any problems arising out of that." She glanced up at Lore. "Everyone in the family loves you ... even Ruel respects you. Even he wouldn't give our child a hard time for being ... different."

Personally Lore thought deep down inside Ruel did care for Elnara, he just had trouble now that there had been tension between the two for so long. He would have pointed out that no one would be able to tell their child was of two worlds anyways... well unless they inheirted his ears, then that was kind of a different matter all together.
"True...." Lore murmured, "About them being different still... and Ruel does really care, I think at his age and after all this time he just has trouble showing it."

Lore's comment about Elnara's brother made her pause thoughtfully. She had never really been close with the twins ... and especially after her return, even after she and Triton had returned Daeron to Ruel, neither Ruel nor Riordan had been happy to see her ... and of course once they had discovered that she was a shapeshifter, they disowned her completely.
"I don't know," she murmured softly. "If he does care ... would it really be so hard to say something? Anything at all? Our entire time at the castle ... the only time he spoke to me was on the day of our wedding ... he said only one word ..."
Congratulations. And that hadn't even been in a very sincere tone ...
Or perhaps she just didn't hear him right. Perhaps she could only see him and hear him through her own preconceived notions of how he felt about her.

"It is possible... people are oddly stubborn that way, to admit they were wrong is very difficult to one's pride," Lore replied softly.
When he thought about the small exchange between them, he had a feeling that if Ruel didn't feel something he would not have said what he said to Lore.
"I mean... if he really didn't like you... he would have thought I was crazy, not respect me... and certainly not ask I treat you well. So.... I do believe there is hope yet."

Elnara nodded slowly, then sighed and smiled faintly.
"Well, I suppose," she murmured softly. "It's just ... I suppose it's hard for me to forget about how he's treated me ... it was a long time ago for him, but for me it was ... barely a year ago ... still fresh ... still recent ..."
She sighed again and looked away. "I only wish I could forget the past."

Lore kissed her chastely on the temple, "Give it time, your right... it hasn't been that long for you, and you don't really see him that much to begin with."
There had never really been a reason for them to visit often, so he wished there was a way to help the two of them, but nothing seemed to be a good solution except for more visits.
"The past is important, don't wish that."

Elnara smiled and leaned into Lore's side as they approached their house.
"And have you convinced yourself of that?" she asked him softly. "I know you don't want to talk about it ... and so I don't ask ... but have you accepted your own past so readily as you encourage me to accept mine?"
She didn't want to pressure him to tell her anything he did not want to ... but until he did, she could only assume that it was too painful for him to talk about (which she could understand), and that therefore he had not yet come to terms with it (which she could not quite so easily understand, considering his encouragement for her to do just that).

She had caught him, and yet not at the same time. Even though he knew what it was she was referring to.
"It's not so much the past as the future that irritates me about my own people," Lore replied softly with a sad sort of smile, "Look at me Elnara. I am happy here, I have a family and they will grow and still be around whether in person or in their desendents."
He looked up at the sky thoughtfully thinking about what he left behind, he didn't regret... oh no.. there was no reason for that now.
"But there are people like me back home that will never marry, and the foolish will never see their desendents because either they won't exist or they themselves won't be alive. My past is my past... and to many it's quite hopeful seeing as I went and became educated all by myself, the only thing I do regret is not throwing a book at the elders for their ignorance."

Elnara's brow furrowed slightly with sadness, and she lowered her eyes and walked in silence for a few moments. He had been wronged ... and yet it was his people that he felt sorry for. She had been wrong - he had indeed come to terms with his past ... he had just not accepted the fate that his people had chosen for themselves.
"I'm sorry," she murmured softly, her pace slowing slightly. "Truly ... I am. I ... did not mean to imply that ... I don't know. I didn't realize you still had such hopes for your people."
She forced herself to look up and meet his gaze again, and ventured a half-smile. "Perhaps someday we should visit and do just that ... throw a book at the elders," she suggested, only half-joking. "If not literally, then metaphorically. Show them that the others like you also have the opportunity to become something, as you did, to have a family, as you do ... show them that they do not have to live their lives as they do."

Lore smiled as he stopped walking and moved to stand in front of Elnara. He wrapped his arms around her and held her close, almost as if to cradle her.
"Don't get me wrong," he murmured in her ear, "In the rare occasion I do dream... not very nice dreams, if the day I was marked," he kissed her lovingly, "But... these days I've found better dreams now."
He looked at her with a twinkle in his eyes. In the past he always tried to twist his mark in hsi mind to be something more platable for him. Lore could only guess that perhaps the best thing to call it... was a mark of a survivor.
