Vajra B. Hairava castro1993 Vajra B. Hairava Mostly, 3rd tone before another 3rd becomes 2nd. Like in ni hao, or in any other situation where 2 3rds are together. Also, bu, "not", which is 4th tone, becomes 2nd when in front of another 4th tone. And often times whet there are two words in a row with the same tone, the second of the 2 becomes toneless. And theres a weird thing about the 3rd tone. You know how it is rising-falling? Well, the majority of the time, it actully just falls and doesn't come back up. So, the only thing then that differentiates the 3rd and 4th tones is that the 3rd tone starts at meduim and falls, and the 4th tone starts high and falls. The only time when the 3rd tone gets its full pronunciation is either when people are talking slowly, or at the end of a sentence. In spoken chinese the 3rd tone seems ignored(opinion). Elaborate! domokun I think in the spoken language everything is much more subtle, since as in any language, peple get lazy ans smuddle things together. But even if smuddle'd, the tones are still there. Either that, or my ears play tricks on me. By ignored I meant not pronounced at all almost.

I'm still not sure I understand what you're saying. You mean when there is a word with the 3rd tone, they remove the tone from it? So what tone does it become?

Yes,but it doesn't seem to become anything. If it doesn't become anything, wouldn't that mean it's just left out of sentences? I don't really think anything can be 'toneless', so I've always wondered why people say that Mandarin has 4 tones plus a neutral, rather than 5 tones.

To quote myself: Vajra B. Hairava Listen closer. Its there. And I'll add: Lawrence, ignore that person, she is wrong. And also, sometimes they do analyze Mandarin as having 5 tones.

To be honest, saying someone is wrong isn't really that rude.
Also, this isn't specifically aimed at you personally, but I absolutely hate it when people tack 'it's an opinion' (or something similar) to the end of their posts in an attempt to reflect any disagreements.
Firstly, people should understand that opinions generally don't mean anything, and opinions CAN be wrong. They are not always the basis for discussions, especially when the discussion is based off a question or statement that can be proven.
Perhaps in this case, you can't see the situation very well. I will use an exaggerated example to demonstrate my point.
Eg.
Thread: Why does the sea looks blue? First poster: Because there are lots of blue fishes in there (OPINION!!) Second poster: It's because it reflects the colour of the sky. Your answer is wrong. First poster: It was an opinion! Get over yourself! Opinions can't be wrong, and they're the basis of all discussion!
As you can see, the first poster is obviously mistaken in their mind and therefore it is not incorrect at all to ignore them, or point out their mistake.
Lastly, Castro, would you mind writing longer posts with more explanations sometimes? It's just that I've noticed it takes a few posts from you for me to understand what you're trying to say.

You didn't have to say if affected you, your reaction shows it, weather it did or not.
If it did not affect you, then that was irrelevant. If it did, then it means what it says, I don't care about your feelings.
How about this: make me. Oh wait, you can't! If you really wanted me to go away, you wouldn't respond in such a provoking way. You are almost asking me to insult you. But for the meantime, I won't. If you really don't give a s**t, you won't bother responding to this post. If you do, then I will make fun of you for being a hippocrate. So the choice is yours. Be the bigger person and end the argument, because I certainly won't. I'm not basing this on the fact that you give a s**t or not like you seem to think, but I do like watching you get frustrated.
(applogies to everyone else, just move along, nothing to see...)
