Lorelei threw her bauble into the air and caught it again in her hands. Even as a child, she was amused by the toy that she had owned since she was a baby.

"Don't you think you're a little too old to play with your bauble?" in a chiding voice, Ophelia leaned over the girl and reached out for the lime green bauble.

"Nope," said Lorelei. The computer-girl was a bit stunned at her bluntness, but eventually shrugged and walked off.

"Hello."

Lorelei couldn't hide her puzzlement as the deep, willowy voice seemed to permeate through the room.

"Hello?"

"Hello..."

"Wow, I'm hearing echoes!" Lorelei leapt up and looked in another room, "But no one's here."

"I'm here."

"Hi, 'I'm'! Where are you?" The duck-girl looked around quizically.

"... In your hands."

"Oh, it's my bauble. You know, that seems to make perfect sense to me right now."

"Of course. That's why I'm here."

Lorelei went right back to tossing the bauble up and down.

A Journal Entry from Kaze

Apparantly Lorelei's bauble has a name, Ilo.

Okay, I name my toys now and then... that's normal.

However, now she's saying that he (not it, he) talks to her.

... And that it was once the lone eye of the Graeae.

X_X No more late nights watching movies for her!

Lorelei: Ability Quest!
As most of us know, Lorelei can be a bit of an airhead. So, let's hope she doesn't burn down the house with this one. In order to obtain her next ability, Lorelei must gather one or more recipe books, and cook (hopefully successfully) at least three dishes.
PostPosted: Tue Sep 05, 2006 8:47 pm

"Psy-yai-yai..." Luckily for Kaze, the Psyduck that was inhabiting her body was obediant to a fault. This was good whenever the Kiki wanted to be scratched behind the ears.

Yes, in an interesting mishap involving some of Jack's magic, Kaze ventured into the body of a Kiki Kitty plush. This was fine, until some of her children from The Magic Kingdom started sneaking in these strange animals called... PokeMon?

Anyway, one of them was psychic. It was a Psyduck... and that Psyduck happened to accidently possess Kaze's empty body!

That's the prelude for the purpose of these journal entries, Lorelei's Ability Quest.

For those of you who don't remember, here's the cast list:

Lorelei- The duck Sin'aeis, a spacey girl who loves mythology and cooking. She'd love gardening too, if she was any good at it!

Ilo- Lorelei's green bauble... apparantly he's really an ancient Grecian. He was once the eye of the Grey Ones.

Kaze- Lorelei's wereduck mother, currently stuck in a Kiki plush.

Jack- Lorelei's father, Kaze's husband, and overall mischevious gremlin-like shapeshifting lazy guy.

Ophelia- Lorelei's nanny, Kaze's personal android. A bit of a worrywart, but she loves cooking almost as much as Lorelei.

Annabel Lee- The resident gardener, Lorelei goes to either her or Ophelia for advice. She has the power to transport people to the worlds of video and computer games.

Sara and Archon- Kaze and Jack's biological children. Sara's a small child now, and Archon is still only a baby.

Psyduck- The resident PokeMon that currently resides in Kaze's body. Oh boy...

Jack was lounging on the couch, not particularly worried about the whole Psyduck incident. In fact, he knew exactly how to switch them back...

He was just evil. And lazy. And Kaze didn't think to ask him. So what she didn't know didn't hurt him.

"Psy-yai-yai..." the Psyduck waddled into the room and looked around before looking at the cat plush in her arms.

It looked rather forlorn, and lonely.

"You can put me down, now," she said in her overly high, squeaky Kiki voice. The Psyduck obeyed and put the plush down in Jack's lap, causing the ancient one to raise a dark eyebrow.

"You look depressed," he said as he casually lifted the plush onto his chest, "Is it about that duck?"

The kiki shook her head, "No... I'm worried about Lorelei. She's been withdrawn lately, and shouldn't she have outgrown playing with that bauble?"

"She's growing up," mused Jack, "And you KNOW why she has that bauble."

"I think she might've gone off the deep end!" the kiki finally mewled.

"I doubt it," said Jack, "I think she's telling the truth."

In response, Kaze the Kiki headbutted him in the stomach.

TO BE CONTINUED...
Will Jack get off his a**? Will Ophelia help Lorelei get a recipe book? Will Lorelei ACTUALLY MAKE AN APPEARANCE?!
All this and more, next time...!

Kiki-Kaze was snapped awake by Lorelei's excited giggling.

"I found it! The perfect cookbook!" she hugged a leather-bound book close to her chest, smiling widely.

"Oh, you did?" mewled Kaze, "May I see it?"

Lorelei happily presented the book to Kiki-Kaze, and the Kiki got pale.

"The... the... NECRONOMICON?!"

"Is that what it's called? It has some great recipies in here!"

"Jack, please... PLEASE take that book from her!"

Jack lazily picked up the book and flipped through its pages, "You mean you can actually read it?"

"Well, yeah, is that a problem?" Lorelei tilted her head.

A smile tugged at the edge of his cold lips as he started to lead the duckling into the kitchen, "Now, let's help you make some... dinner..."

"JACK! NO RESURRECTING THE DEAD! JACK! JAAAACK!"

Kaze warily peeked her plushie head over the side of the table, warily looking at the taquitos.

"They... don't look like evil taquitos..." the Kiki blinked, "But... the Necronomicon had the recipies? THAT MAKES NO SENSE!"

Then Jack walked in wearing a frilly apron.

"THAT MAKES NO SENSE," the Kiki repeated.

"Don't worry, I didn't make it," muttered Jack, "I'm just hauling the dishes in here."

He sat down the main course.

"The vegetable lasagna doesn't look evil either... but... but... the NECRONOMICON?!"

"Don't ask me," said Jack, "She's the one who can read the book." He looked upset by that fact, and Kiki-Kaze laughed.

"You can't read it! Awww, poor Jackie...!! Hahahaaa..."

"Mom," said Lorelei from the kitchen, "Please stop distracting dad, I need to watch the bananas foster burn."

".... Burn?" both of them turned around and looked at the smoke rising from the bananas foster.

"They obviously don't know that bananas foster is meant to burn..." chuckled Ilo as he watched Lorelei try to stop Jack and the Kiki-Kaze from putting out the bananas foster.

Ilo hovered over Lorelei's sleeping form. She looked so calm in her sleep, cute too. She was wearing her lime-green panties and a shirt with a picture of the ocean on it. Her arm was over the side of the bed, and her pillow had fallen onto the ground beside it. Still, she was comfortable, and she awoke when the spring breeze brushed across her face.

"Ilo..." she mused, "What are you doing here?"

Ilo chuckled and nudged at her cheek, "You'd better hide your books. Ophelia will be up here soon."

"Oh!" Lorelei leapt up and dashed across the room to a pile of books. However, she misjudged the distance and hit the wall with a 'thump!'

"O-Oww..." as she slumped onto the ground, some of the books fell onto her lap. Some were pink, others were a scarlet-- but all of them were paperback. A few had pictures of shirtless men carrying women, others had a pair on horseback, and even others had two women engaged in a passionate kiss.

Lorelei had a stash of romance novels.

Like she did every Tuesday when Ophelia did the laundry, Lorelei grabbed as many books as she could and stuffed them in her closet. She was especially careful with her favorite book, one with two women in aprons baking what looked like a cake. However, one of them was feeding the other frosting, and there were hearts all over the background.
"Pastry Love" was her favorite.

Almost as if on cue, after all the books were hidden, Ophelia knocked on the door.

Ilo rested on the bed as Lorelei opened the door.

My head's been hurting a lot lately. Medicine doesn't really help, and my mom's been worried.

Ilo says that there's nothing for me to worry about, though, and I'm just getting growing pains.

.... I didn't know that you could get growing pains in your head? Then again, I don't know a lot of things... ^^"

Behind Lorelei's bed there are a small group of papers, hidden from the watchful eyes of Lorelei's Bunnyguards and the duckling herself.

They are thoughts and strange ruins written by the bauble, Ilo. It is unclear how he was able to write them, but it is obvious that he has been growing in power.

Ilo's Thoughts
It is quite obvious where my writings are, and yet despite this the family has no clue. Morons, the lot of them. And yet I owe each and every one of them my thanks, for if it weren't for them I would still be a mere toy for a spoiled brat.

I grow so weary of being a guardian for this fool. She has no great dreams, nothing worthy of my attention. She wants to be a chef, of all things. Luckily I have started to plant ideas in her head, ideas of going to Greece. It's been working rather well, she doesn't suspect a thing and is blissfully learning how to make hummus dishes and such. I have started to search for culinary schools in Greece, hopefully there will be one that she is suited for, for then she can inform her parents... and as her parents are wrapped around Lorelei's little webbed toe, they will do anything for her.

There I can finally control and discard of my host, and I will be able to live again.

You thought you could get rid of me, you foolish gods, by giving me to a trio of toothless old crones. I gave them their sight for so long, only to be tossed aside by the ages. But no more. Soon I will have my power again, and the Pantheon will be the first to suffer!

The Quest Giver
There's some sort of event coming up! Is it a wedding, birthday, or something else? Maybe it's just a completely random party. Whatever it is, Lorelei must make and decorate a cake appropriate for whatever occassion is being celebrated.

"... What's the event, again?" Ophelia glanced at the child Sin'aeis as she rummaged through the cottage's kitchen.

"It's Bill's birthday," explained Lorelei as she climbed up on one of the counters to reach a higher shelf, "And so I'm making him a cake." The android walked behind Lorelei and put her hands around her waist so that she wouldn't fall.

"Who's Bill?" she asked, her voice calm and even. The green-haired girl glanced down at Ophelia and smiled, "He's the eldest of Mom's ducks." Ophelia blinked once, then twice in response.

"You're baking a cake for a duck?" she finally spoke, her voice still even-- though it sounded more flat.

"Of course, Bill's a part of the family just like anyone else," a bag of sugar, some flower, and other ingredients were nonchalantly tossed onto the counter below Lorelei, and Ophelia had to dodge so she wasn't hit in the head with vanilla extract.

"Doesn't it need eggs?" she said as she looked towards the refridgerator.
Lorelei was silent.

"You... would give EGGS to a DUCK?"

Ophelia paused, and the two of them stood silently, pondering.

".... No, I suppose that wouldn't be a good idea," Ophelia shook her head.

~~~
Ilo lingered near the kitchen's entrance as Lorelei and Ophelia waited for the oven to pre-heat. The batter was smooth and had a yellow tint to it from the vanilla. If Ilo had had a nose at that time, he would've wrinkled it in disgust. No ambitions... nothing. One of her greatest joys was just making a cake.
Not even an offering to the Pantheon or a gift for an important ally. Just... a cake. For a duck.
~~~
It was like the duck knew that he was to be receiving something. He stood outside the house, waiting expectantly. The other ducks were swimming or waddling about, like nothing was important. It was just Bill... only Bill who knew that a special girl was making a special cake for him.

And what a special cake it was. Over the white frosting danced little crickets made out of marzipan and worms made out of sugar. The words 'HAPPY BIRTHDAY BILL' were written in green frosting, and tiny little footprints shaped like webbed feet framed the fancy letters.

It was truly a cake meant for... well, something more than a duck, at least. Good thing, too, because Bill apparantly didn't like sweets. He was quite satisfied with bread crust that Kaze gave him later on.

Lorelei's father had no qualms eating that cake, though.

Lorelei's Going to Greece!
PostPosted: Fri Jan 18, 2008 4:51 pm

=Day 0=
As the taxi pulled up by the airport, Lorelei dug through her patchwork-designed pocketbook. After giving the taxi driver a wad of Gaia gold ("WTF? I want US DOLLARS D
Plus, the school that Lorelei was attending to (for their January term only) promised that they'd provide the supplies she needed for her cooking lessons. So, her carry-on was filled with mostly clothes...

... And Ilo.

The bauble was practically buzzing with anticipation. Even though he was smashed inbetween a month's worth of Lorelei's underwear, it did little to hinder his excitement.

His plans were working! Lorelei would study little of cooking, no... instead she would succumb to his power, and become his new vessel. Though she was small and clumsy, the duck girl would serve his purposes well until he could build himself a body of his own.

Then the Pantheon would pay.

=Day 5=
The hospital walls were white, of course. But Lorelei couldn't see them. She wasn't asleep, but she certainly wasn't awake. Every now and then her eyelids would flutter, or she'd grimace, but nothing could rise her. Nearby, a few nurses lingered, muttering about the strange girl.

"...And her parents?"

"We notified them yesterday, they're on the way but it could take a few days."

"The poor thing..."

"I can't really sympathize, especially since I have no idea WHAT she is."

.....

It had started the day that Lorelei arrived. She had barely started unpacking when Ilo had rolled out.

"Ilo?" Lorelei smiled down at her guardian, "Sorry about that, I had almost forgotten about you--"

"Be quiet," Ilo snapped. Lorelei was so surprised that she dropped the pair of pants that she had been holding. Ilo glinted for a moment before purring, "Thank you for bringing me here, Lorelei."

Ilo had been silent for the rest of the evening, and throughout the first day of Lorelei's orientation. It was a pretty low-geared orientation, basically she was taken on a tour and was introduced to some of the other students. A few of the girls were rather cute, and giggled whenever Lorelei passed by. She blushed at first, until she noticed one of them pointing to her duck feet. She decided that she wouldn't bother talking to THOSE girls. Jan wouldn't have made fun of her feet, and Jack wouldn't have either... well, at least to her face... or if she had made him some dinner.

She smiled to herself, and continued on her tour. In about a month she'd be back at her home, back where she fit in. At least before that time she'd be able to make some more meals, or at least she hoped so.

She didn't know it at the time, but she wouldn't make a single dish on this trip.
