Irelia managed to get the clasp open but couldn't open the lid as she was struck from behind by what seemed to be a very large and terrible dinosaur. Shrieking wildly, Irelia fell face first in to the guitar case.
She stopped moving for a second, tensing her shoulders, her eyes sharp as a steel blade. No one knocks Irelia down. Irelia jumped to her feet, screaming a garbled mash of babytalk and swearwords, and charged full throttle towards Harper.
She lowered her head, her horns sharp and ready for puncturing.
"I KILL YOU NOW!"

It seemed like all he did was blink, and things had changed without him knowing it. There was another girl in this now, the little brat who tried to get the better marimba and now she was charging at him?!
He squealed again and tried to dive behind Jacoba and use her as a body shield, "NO KILL! BAD! BAAAAD!" He put his hands over his head and tried to think of a way to get what he wanted without getting maimed and becoming legless like that red headed little BRAT, "NO WANNA DIE!"

A hand suddenly closed at the back of Irelia's dress and she was lifted (with difficulty) a few inches from the floor and set back down, just enough to interrupt her flow. "There's no killing during song time," a calm voice interrupted. "There's also no sitting on Xi's guitar or I won't protect your little keisters." Evan Luck surveyed his small domain with a faint smile. "So, monsters, where did the zookeeper go?"
A small, brightly-colored child sat in his arms, trying to hide between the petals that surrounded her. Clearly, the fight had disturbed her.

Jacoba was also fuming; she wanted hot, murderous vengeance on both Irelia and Harper, having been denied Mortal Kombat with Irelia and having been used as a meatshield by Harper. She was so mad, in fact, she could barely say anything, clenching her little fists and giving both other kids expressions that said just wait until I get you in the dress-up house.

Harper lowered his hands and looked at Evan cautiously. He was somewhat glad for the interruption, but honestly, these pansy adults never seemed to do anything except break up otherwise fun and informative playtimes.
"Bleeeeh," he told Evan, making a face at him. The face twisted into a mocking grin when he looked at Irelia, even going so far as to shake his body side to side, "Na na na na naaa!"
That was when he noticed Jacoba was still there, so quickly he squirmed away from her only after blowing another raspberry at her face.

Jacoba also blew a raspberry back, so long and so loud that eventually she ran out of spit and puff. Luckily, before she and Harper could murder each other over this, Xi returned and picked up the horrible old marimba.
"Sorry, somebody had buried a couple kids at the sandpit," he said to Evan. "It was deep, man, one of the kids is gonna be a miner or something when they grow up. - Hey, squirts, how about some singalong time?" (He ignored all of their responses, pretending it was positive.) "I guess nobody wants to pick the first song?"
Jacoba forgot her anger. "WHEELS," she demanded.

The little girl in Evan's arms immediately released her hold on the petals and clapped her hands over her ears. Her sleepy aqua eyes began to look alarmed. Evan gentled her with a pat to the head. "Inside voices, Reds," he cautioned. "We've got a new kid here. Doesn't anyone want to say hi and teach her how the wheels go?"

"DEATH COMES FIRST BY REAPER BAND!" Harper squealed, mimicking something he had heard at home. He quickly wiped the spit off his face but otherwise seemed unphased by the two girls now that the grown ups were trying to organize something. He passed a glare at Evan again. Inside voices? Who was he kidding, "No quiet!!" He yelled, his eyebrows furrowed. "Baby jus' be happy." He commanded, pointing at the flower-child in the man's arms.

She stared at him, unblinkingly.
"Um, right." Evan sighed and set her down near the Big Chair. "This is Delilah. Her mom just dropped her off - probably not knowing what a madhouse this is."
Delilah stared harder at Harper and then, slowly, she crossed her eyes.

Xi had had to turn away for a few seconds to muffle the laughter Harper's request had sent him into. After he managed to compose himself, he said cheerfully: "Puff's a good quiet one to start off with, isn't it?" ("NO," said Jacoba.) "Does everyone know the hand actions we make when we sing Puff The Magic Dragon?" It was too much to hope, but obviously Harper, Irelia and Jacoba together were going to shriek their way through Wheels On The Bus. Xi courageously strummed a chord before they could complain about the choice. "And a one, and a two, and a three!"
Jacoba unwillingly began to move through the words; she crossed her arms and made rude faces at Irelia for having gotten her way, Harper at being Harper and Delilah for simply being in the wrong place, wrong time. It also hurt that she couldn't pronounce a lot of things, only just cutting her teeth. "FWOWICKED FWOO THE OCEAN MIST," she bellowed in time with the guitar. (Luckily, Xi's mellow, comforting voice was louder and more soothing than her own.)

Evan's voice hummed along just below Xi's, a disturbingly nice counterpoint as if they had been doing this sort of thing together for ages. (Hint: they had.) Shifting, he took a seat just off to the side of the small group of children and folded himself up Indian-style. He clapped softly in time.
Delilah watched the others with round eyes. Slowly, she began to smile and lifted up her little hands to cheer them on silently. She liked music. Her mother often sang around the apartment.

Harper stared back at Delilah for a little while, and found her ending gesture to be rather funny. He giggled, clapped for her getting 'happy,' but all too soon his joy faded.
Harper didn't like this song... At all. It was really boring and the two daycare workers were getting on his nerves, even more so now that they were singing this completely stupid song.
"IS STUPID SONG!" he yelled, pointing an accusing finger at Xi. He gave a 'hmph,' crossed his arms and went to march himself into a corner, as though separating himself would somehow punish everyone else.

Xi kept on singing about kids named Little Jacky Paper, letting Harper go to the corner by himself; it would be hard for the small boy to separate himself once a real fun number began, which is why when he ended the song on a flourish he didn't ask for requests.
"I guess it's time to sing If You're Happy And You Know It," he announced, the Ultimate Join-In Song. Very few kids could resist the chance to clap their hands, stomp their feet, shout hooray and all the rest to prove that their mood was, in fact, happy. "Who wants to sing 'If You're Happy And You Know It'?"
"ME," Jacoba announced, as she loved making noise.
"Guess we'd better sing it, then, and you guys can help out and show Del what you do when you're real happy," said Xi. He winked at Evan and cleared his throat: "If you're happy and you know it, clap your hands..."
