Arril nodded. He knew nothing of the 'superiors' the old man spoke of. "I will be be sure not to get in your, or your surperior's way at all. May I ask, Where am I? I haven't been in any settlement since I was a child."
He shrugged, the weight between his shoulders getting heavy.

That was more than the old man wanted to know. He waved him in, hurried and careless, like he wasn't paying any attention. "This is place of blacksmithin', so don't get yourself scorched," was his only answer. "Rooms is back there. I'll get some water for your boy."
And with that, he disappeared into a room opposite the hallway that he had pointed out to Arril.

Arril looked at the boy. he was pale and his breathing shallow. He felt sad that he could not do more for the boy. At least he has numbed the pain for a little while before he died.
He felt sad, but no more. in the long years in the wilderness he had learned that death was something that was common. With the many wolfpacks that he had come across in the wild, they all had told him that dying was the greatest release of all time, that it should be cherished that one spirit could return to the essence of nature. They boy was lucky. If he would live, he would be in pain for the rest of his life.
Arril turned and looked around at his surroundings, the hot irons above the coals, the dark room the old man went into, the shoddy weapons leaning against the wall...
The weapons would hold up in light blows, possibly meant for instruction or defense against goblins and the like, but they wouldn't stand up against an attack from a soldier, or Arril himself...
He walked into the cramped corridor, looking into a room where two boys were sleeping on thin, straw matresses. This wasn't the room to sleep in.
He looked into the only other room, an aclove, really. He stepped in and sat against the wall, keeping his hood drawn up. He had slept many times like this before, trying to get out of the rain. it was no different now. "Sih, wake me if someone comes. Bite them if they try to get close..."
The snake tightened her constriction on the man and he found himself falling asleep...

The so-called room that Arril dozed in had no door, so when Cheryl came to wake him, she found no physical barrier to her forthright entrance. She held herself upright, stretching her diminutive stature into something imposing. The biggest flaw in her commanding front, however, was that she did not conduct herself as a military person would, for she kept her arms crossed instead of ready at her sides. She had not come planning to use force.
"Your companion is dead," she said as she came to an abrupt halt a few feet back from the entrance. Her strong, purposeful gate may have been sufficient to wake the serving boys that Arril had seen earlier. If so, they were smart enough to stay put. In fact, the old man had also made himself scarce. "If you wish to avoid the same fate, you will come with me."
It was not meant so much as a threat, but as an offer. Despite the snake familiar, the woman still assumed that this boy knew something of the situation that he had gotten into. In her estimation, there was no telling what members of the underground could hide in the crevices of society, and that was more real to her than any thing outside of Feretris.

Arril had awoken when the woman had entered a building. He had a knack for sleeping light, and the knack had proven itself useful time and time again. This was no exception. A little before he had tucked his feet under him, to avoid a potentially awkward situation.
He looked up at the woman after she had addressed him, his eyes the only thing visible in the charmed hood. "He is dead... I'm sorry, I did not know him. I only found him on my way here."
Sih moved, her coil around his neck the only visible part of her. She hissed silently into Arril's ear, looking at the woman. Her eyes flashed in the strange darkness of the hood, adding a pair to the ones that were already there. It would be demonic if one didn't see that it was just a snake. "This woman has seen me... I didn't have the time to hide my coils." She said, keeping her small glare on the woman.
Arril nodded, touching a hand to her exposed coil. "Why do you come to me with veiled threats? I have done no harm to you or these people. I am but a traveller from afar." He said, keeping a neuteral expression of his eyes.
He looked over to some old boots against the wall, that looked as if they would be big enough to fit his big feet.
He looked back to her, waiting for the woman's answer. He had laid his bow beside him as he rested. his knife was concealed.

"Laying out the facts for you is not the same as threatening you. Your companion was wanted, and those who seek after him would just as likely slit your throat as enslave you to a harsh mistress." Cheryl pushed her hair back behind her shoulder as she delivered her small speech with chin up, in clipped, brazen tones. If the snake upset her in the least, it only made her raise her chin higher. "I have another use for you, and it does not involve you being dead, nor being here. What will you do?"

This was wrong. This wasn't what he was looking for at all. Enslavement? Death? What sort of civilization was this?
Feeling his agitation, Sih hissed at the woman as Arril rose swiftly. "What do you mean, enslavement?" He said, keeping his head concealed behind the hood.
He could see her trying to peer in at his face, but it would be impossible to see it through the black charm that the old tribesmen put on the hood. He did not want to harm anyone, but if anyone tried to take Sih away or 'enslave' him, he was confident that he could get his knife between their ribs before they could put a hand on him.
He kept note of where the woman was, how she was standing, and her mistake of holding her chin high and keeping her arms crossed in front of her. if he had to, he could have her on the floor before she could get her arms loosened from their cross. "I just came here to find myself. I've been in the wilderness for all my life." He said, his garbled common language accented with a mix of hisses and growls.

Arril narrowed his eyes. "I am up. Would you like me to stand higher?" He said, the accent bleeding into his comments horribly.
Both He and Sih tensed for violence. The tone and inflection of her voice, as well as the way that she looked down at him told him that she thought herself superior to him. She was likely to act if provoked, but Arril was backed into a corner and the only way out was through her. His instincts told him to flee or fight, but his rational mind stayed the wild spirit inside of him. both of those would only lead to more violence, and this was his first actual day inside of civilization. Why did this happen to him?
Arril kept still, poised to strike if he needed to. It was very possible that she couldn't read his muscles because of the concealment of the cloak. He could understand if she didn't know if he was about to attack. it was an advantage to him and sih... "Where will you take me if I come with you? What have I done to be spoken to as you have?"

Cheryl scoffed. "You've aided a criminal! You're lucky I'm not kill-happy like the others currently on your buddy's tail. It won't matter to them that you didn't know who he was, or that you are a wild man from the plains. They will probably imprison you, where you will be tortured. I, on the other hand, am not taking you to prison. I am offering to guide you, on the simple condition that you do what I say. There won't always be time to explain, and we have wasted enough time already. I am only a day ahead of the ones who are after you. Make your decision; get your a** in gear. I'll not wait any longer."
With that, Cheryl pivoted on her heel and stalked down the hall, her boots making a clunking sound as the hardened bottoms hit against the hard-packed dirt floor. She was determined, not stealthy. Stealth could not enter into it until she knew what Arril would decide. Next she might be trying to disguise their path away from this hut, or possibly selling information on his disappearance to the trackers, or perhaps stalking him for more mysterious purposes. Either way, she was not going to get caught hanging around here trying to argue with an impetuous young man.

Arril watched the woman walk away haughtily then turned to Sih, already staring at him with one eye. "What should we do?" She asked, her tongue flicking against his cheek.
Arril pulled his hood off and scratched his head a few times, savoring the freshnes of the air, before putting the hood back on. "Well, I wanted to go into civilization... I guess the boy was an outlaw." He said, rubbing his chin.
Sih rubbed her head against his cheekbone. She was going to start shedding soon. "Then we should go with her. We dont want to attract more attention than we already have." She said, hissing mildly.
"I dont like it either. I'm sure we can go back to the wilderness, but we would have someone following us. I dont want to kill or hurt anyone. Maybe we should feel it out and see what she wants. if she just wants to enslave us, then we'll return home, in the wilds." Arril said, picking up his bow and quiver.
He exited the tiny nook and entered the small work room, where the woman was. "My name is Arril. I've decided to come along with you for now. If You try and put a root under me, I'll make sure you wont make the mistake again." Arril said, trying to get used to the old boots he had found in the store room.
The comment hadn't been meant as a threat, it was an old saying he learned from many a wolf. Really, if she tried anything he would slip away and never return. Killing someone he could understand was not something he could do lightly.
He wobbled slightly, cursing himself mentally for not just wrapping his feet.

Luckily for him, Cheryl had trouble taking any man seriously. A scoff interrupted her sneer as she involuntarily glanced over her shoulder at him. She regained her composure quickly, pleased that the male had decided to come with her after all. She could profit from this.
"Come, then, and be silent," she commanded, which happened to be sound advice at the moment. For now, Arril's needs matched with hers. She hoped that there would not be more of a conflict once they were away from this place, where normally their paths might diverge. She hoped she could convince him to stick with her just long enough.
As they passed through the house, they passed closed doors and an empty main room. Cheryl's mere presence had effected this change in the atmosphere while Arril was fairly isolated in his little corner. Although she had not surprised him when she came to wake him, he had to wonder now if any thing important had happened in his absence. He heard breathing as they passed the closed doors, so someone was still alive here. It was unfortunate that they were leaving behind people who may have known more about Cheryl's intentions than Arril currently did.
Their trek away from the little shack was conducted reasonably enough for two people hiding from society. They were still on the outskirts of the compound, and remained so even though they headed north and west. Cheryl certainly seemed to know her way around, for it seemed that in every other direction lay more densely inhabited areas. Yet eventually they would have to flirt with civilization. As day rolled over Feretris, a used road became apparent ahead in the distance. To their left, southwest, a flock of sheep ambled by out of earshot. To their right, the north east, small horse-drawn carriages approached the road by way of a smaller path, but as yet out of ear shot.
Cheryl had not spoken to him once during the night, except to give him concise directions about where they were going. When she spoke now, it was not much different; purely practical information. "Do not ******** this up. If I give you a command in front of these people, you must follow it thoroughly and without hesitation. Do not cause them to be curious."

Arril had obediently followed Cheryl through the outskirts of Feretris, being sure to keep his head down. He was very surprised that she hadn't gotten irked by his constant whispering to Sih or the charmed hood that he never took off, keeping his face hidden from view, even in the bright sun of Midday. "You are eventually going to need to take off your hood, Arril." Sih told him, her forked tongue flickering in one of his floppy ears.
Arril nodded, watching the approaching carriages and the harsh-looking people driving them. He had no fear of the woman overhearing his conversation, for he doubted any person within leagues would know how to competently converse with a serpent, an animal who was widely held in contempt and thought as simple and instinctual. "I will not let them phase me if they laugh." He whispered, in the snake tongue language.
"It's not laughing, I'm worried about, Arril. We must be careful about how we do things here in this civilization of theirs... These people carry weapons as if something might attack them at any moment. I'm wary of this woman we have chosen to follow. What if she tries to 'enslave' us?"
Arril shook his head. "I will not let them harm you." He said, ending the conversation.
They both waited for what would happen next, wary of the harsh tone the woman Cheryl used, and her strange directions of obedience. Arril would not humiliate himself for this woman, especially if she asked him to do something foolish. He was a free man, not a pet or a servant. A free man capable of defending himself, if need be.

Cheryl silently handed him a few things to carry, but asked nothing more of him for now. They could see the carriages long before the horses began to surpass them on the road; until then, Cheryl was tense and scowling at the inconvenience. Once the carriage was beside her, she was all prim smiles.
"Ho!" a woman called out cheerily from the carriage, leaning out just enough for the side curtain to fall behind her shoulder. "What distance are you traveling on foot?"
"We are traveling to the market of Gerl Estates," Cheryl answered stiffly.
In contrast, the reply was persistently melodic. "Hop aboard, then, unless you love sore feet," the woman in the carriage chuckled.
Cheryl looked sidelong at Arril, hesitating, but when she returned her gaze to the carriage, she bent her head submissively. "As you wish," she relented. Something about the woman indicated to Cheryl a higher status, and one she best obey.

Arril felt Sih's coils constricting around his chest. He shared her unease. Wobbling around in the uncomfortable boots, following a woman who had basicly threatened them both with slavery and death wasn't exactly something he wished to be doing.
He twiched his tail uncomfortably against his leg. if he didn't unbind it in a few hours, he would be cramping for at least a day. "A market... Why is she taking us to a market, Arril?" Sih asked, hissing as silently as she could.
Arril shook his head. "I dont know... Keep quiet now. Do not let them get close." He whispered, his words inaudible to all but her."
He gave the woman Cheryl a murderous glance as she looked at him, his blue eyes shining through the darkness of the charmed hood. Holding the things he was given in one arm, he brushed the hard spot against his thigh, where his knife was concealed. He felt sih tensing as they both waited to be told to go into the carriage.
