Sparks rarely judged on appearance, what some saw as 'below' them, she saw as unusual and curious. In the case of Spot, words could not describe how cute she found him and while she didn't want children, a rather large part of her wanted to whisk him away and nuzzle him to death. He was so tiny, the height was a novelty for the tall mare who tended to tower above even normal soquili given her race.

Nevertheless, wagging her tail lazily from side to side, she gave a smile as he tried to catch the attention of another soquili within the area. Her ears swivelled back as he called out and while she had no intention of helping him just yet, she did want to see if what she said held true for normal soquili as well.

"Hellooooo!" The tiny one had called.

"Morning!" Called another voice from the distance, though she wasn't sure which soquili had responded.

Spot wouldn't have minded if the mare had stolen him from his adoptive family and cared for him as her own. She had, afterall helped him understand a lot more than Charlamagne had and her stories were so interesting! He could learn to grow up like her one day too! But at the moment, the Usdia's attention was directed elsewhere...

"Morning!" Said a voice, of whose body was unclear. The baby jumped back in surprise and it made him laugh as hard as he could. She was right! They talked back to you! They were all friendly (or at least one of them) and Spot was terribly happy about his response.

"Who are you?" He said back, looking down at Sparkles and directed his attention to her for a split second. "So cool!" He stammered, and returned to the sky.

"The king of the skies!" The voice replied joyously, still unclear in regards to location. However, given the rather bemused tone in its voice it was clear that whoever it may have been wasn't being honest. Whoever it was, most certainly wasn't the king of the skies but that didn't make it any less fun to tease.

Sparks could only released a chuckle as she turned her gaze round briefly towards the baby before attempting to seek out the sound of the other. If anything, this little excursion would definitely keep the baby interested in being more sociable. Given she was always one to encourage social interaction she would be the first to nudge her children in to making friends (if she had any).

Oho! He almost made her broody.

But she would resist!

"I told you they'd talk back," She cooed with a grin on her equine lips.

The king...of the skies? Aha! That comment made the baby Usdia cheer happily on top of the unicorn. Had he seriously met the king of something so big like the sky? Whoever said that had the bemused tone that normal (and older) soquili and Usdia alike would notice but to this certain baby any tone was as good as the next! It could just as well be the truth.

Black eyes darted back and forth trying to tell which one spoke. Which was utterly useless since whoever was the 'king of the skies' didn't want to show themselves. Oh, how disappointing, Spot would have loved to see someone who had wings upclose!

"You're right! That's cool!" He giggled happily, now suddently bored with this game of hers. They had talked back like she said but none of them had shown themselves to the baby Usdia. Besides, if this was exciting, imagine all the rest of the secrets that the world held!

"What else?" He asked Sparkles, getting comfortable on her back as if to take a ride.

"Well..." Continuing to walk as the baby seemed to draw his little game to a close, the mare drifted briefly into her own thoughts. There were many things in this world to see but some might be a little too 'serious' for him to appreciate at this exact moment in time. It was a pity really, certain scenery was spectacular but if he was anything like she had been at that age she would have tugged at her father's tail and declare she was bored thirty seconds in!

"There are also dangerous critters about," She began slowly, her pace steady and controlled even as she moved over a slope and onto slightly higher ground. "They can hurt you if you aren't careful, but they look cute and very fluffy sometimes!" She explained, picturing a number of the creatures she had seen on her journey.

"Some even go 'RAWWWWR!' if you wake them up too early in the morning." Now that, she had done as a dare once. Her father had nearly killed her himself for it and everything.

Perhaps to some babies the whole scenery issue would be a problem, but to this certain one it didn't come as often. Huge anything had made the baby squeel because of his size, water had delighted him, grass pissed him off...each 'thing' had made Spot have his own feeling towards it and seeing new things only made the feelings grow stronger. If Sparkles wanted to show him, he wouldn't get 'bored.'

"Really?" The baby asked, sitting contently on her back finally in a comfortable position after they started walking again. "Why do they hurt? Would they hurt me?" Spot just couldn't comprehend the fact that someone out there might bring danger to him. Charlamagne did tell him to be careful but still-there was a creature out there willing to bring pain to something as adorable as the Usdia?

But the sound of her 'RAWWWWR' voice had made him jump ever so slightly before laughing again. "Oh? I'll never do that again, that noise not good." Still, why? Hurting someone for waking you up? It all seemed ridiculous.

"Well, some creatures just aren't very nice," Sparkles explained slowly, trying her best to put it in a context that the little one would understand. It was hard though, everyone learnt things through experience but she wasn't going to be the one who got him in harms way. Not only was it irresponsible, but she couldn't fathom harming the tiny soquili either!

"They're born that way. Some are grumpy, some eat other creatures...it's just the way they are." She smiled a little and glanced over her shoulder at the giggling child before sighing. "The spirits work in strange ways, they say its necessary to have creatures like that to make sure the world works in the right way..." She really hadn't understood it when her father had spoken to her about it but in time she had done...it had just taken a little while.

"It's hard to imagine, isn't it?"

Some creatures just aren't very nice.

If that wasn't the understatement of the year, then nothing could be. Of course, Spot had no idea just how right she was. If he had understood her completely, he wouldn't have believed it. Nice was something he lived by, it wasn't that hard to be nice to someone...was it? Just how mean was 'not very nice'. A kick in the leg? A hurtful word tossed around? Or (to Spot's complete and utter unconscience mind) something more than that?

"Oh. That's not good." The baby responded to her, still trying to silently figure out how deep her words went. Not nice...again was that simple? It wasn't hard to lend out a helping hand or give a cheerful comment. If everyone had learned to do that, the world would be better. Right? Or not? Had there be true evil out there that he knew, he would have taken back his thoughts.

But then Sparkles pratically answered his silence. "They...eat us? Creatures...eat...other...creatures? Not...berries?" Beady little eyes couldn't help but stare at the ground and no where else for fear of catching the eye of a creature-eater. "Oh, that's no good. Why're they born that way?" The baby tried his best to continue to comprehend her words, ever so slightly going over each word. It seemed impossible, what she was explaining to him. But if she was saying it, it had to be true. Right? "Why is nice not good for them? It's not hard to be nice...is it?"

Hard to imagine. This was probably the most...the biggest...honestly, as Spot grew and grew...even into a strong, older and much more mature Usdia adult, he'd never fully understand why some soquili weren't...nice.

"Balance," Sparkles replied simply as she came to a halt and glanced over her shoulder again, her pink eyes fixing on the tiny foal. "You see if there was too much of one thing, then nothing else would have a chance to grow and play," She began to explain slowly, motioning towards the grass at their hooves - she supposed that was the perfect example.

"Take this grass," She continued softly, "When a soquili eats it, it gets too short for another soquili to have some too - so if there were too many soquili in the world then there wouldn't be enough to eat!" She canted her head to the side as she recalled her father's words. They were different than hers, more complicated but she had drawn her own conclusions from what he had said.

"So, the spirits have to find a way to make sure that everyone has enough to eat...That means that there has to be a way to make sure there aren't too many of the same creature! These meat-eaters are the answer, they are fed by those who are unlucky but you see...when those creatures are taken by these meat eaters they are doing a very important job." She didn't want the concept of the cycle of life to horrify the baby.

"It is through their noble and brave sacrifices that we all have enough to eat."
PostPosted: Thu Aug 16, 2007 7:36 am

Balance? That sounded rather silly, but since Sparkles stated it so perfectly he had only one choice but to believe her. The explaination that followed made more sense then one would think, only because he was so small. Too much of one thing would help him get bigger would it? No, not according to her. The baby tore his eyes to the grass, staring at it with interested eyes. Ha, leave it to a soquili to use the grass as an example.

But she did a pretty darn good job explaining the issue of meat-eating creatures. He had understood, if not morally still, he definitely got his question answered. "Ooh. So in order for me or you to...survive...Muma would have to die? Or someone else? What if you get eaten?" The baby said rather stupidly, a serious tone flooding his normal cheery voice. It all just seemed so wrong...but if that's the way that he was supposed to live on, then well....so be it.

Thank the Gods Sparkles knew what she was doing. It was, afterall already getting to gruesome for Spot to handle, his normally happy mind was filled with horrid thoughts, but now it was all...fine. "They...sacrifice themselves?" He repeated, grinning a bit. "That's...so cool. It's not right, but if it has to be...that way..." He trailed off, looking down at the grass and silently cursing it. If only there was more to go around...

"Well, if your Muma or I have to go away then for some it'll be sad," Sparkles agreed slowly, looping around the lake as she kept within sight of the soquili in the distance. "But they'll never forget what we did for them and every winter and spring you'll get to see us again!" The smile never left her lips as she recalled the miraculous transformation that occurred during these two times.

"You see, when someone you love has to go away, the Spirits take them to another place." She pointed up towards the sky with her nose and giggled. "Sometimes if you head really far north you can see mystical lights, that's where the Spirits and those who have gone away dance... Each spring and each winter they travel south..."

"Kinda like birds I guess," Sparks mused and shook her head, Spot was probably too young to recall any change in season just yet. "You should keep an eye out for them, when they come in winter the leaves all change colour and the snow comes - that's when the Spirits tell all the forest nymphs and creatures that it's time for their naps." She was making the Spirits sound a little like parents, but that was what they were, wasn't it?

"While in the spring they make all the creatures wake up again and the flowers and trees all sprout new leaves and blossoms. Very pretty, especially if you watch it from the mountains where you can see all the colours of a rainbow."
PostPosted: Tue Aug 21, 2007 9:02 am

Indeed, sad. If Muma or Sparkles had to go away for any other reason besides getting eaten, that would also be terribly sad. Anyone, for that matter. Spot was one who couldn't stand being alone, and just the mere thought of someone that he cared about disappearing for a really long time or even permantely was very hard to deal with.

He was following along pretty well with her words until the talk of a...miracle came up. "I...what? How? What happens in winter and spring?" The baby was uterrly excited to hear of something that happened in those two times that allowed someone to see a loved one who got sacrificed.

But his question was already answered, it seemed when Sparkles continued her magical story. These 'Spirits' she spoke so highly of didn't seem all that terrible, in fact, they seemed wonderous and kind. Like what they were doing was a good thing as well as those who were killed. Beady eyes followed her nose to the sky and he giggled. "They go to the sky...? ...They dance? ...They fly?" It all seemed pretty amazing to him, and he silently wondered if there was any way he'd be able to travel north to see these lights.

And of course he was too young for a season change, but that didn't mean he'd ever forget when the time came for winter to appear. If what she said was true, (which he didn't doubt) then bring on the cold season, for he'd love to see the spirits. "These Spirits sound like Muma!" He giggled lightly, wondering if Charlamagne had any idea of these existing spirits or even if she was one. "Do they protect me too?" Then came Sparkles description of the change to spring, which sounded even more beautiful then winter.

"Mountains? Alright." Spot stated, making a note in his mind to remember that as he grew. "Why do they put them to sleep during...winter? And wake up again in spring?"

"The spirits always watch over you," so everyone always wondered if Sparks was mentally stable but her faith was unquestionable. She loved the spirits and their existence explained anything and everything that soquili needed to know. Even children seemed to understand them, there was nothing scientific about it...it was just sheer faith and magic that brought upon such wondrous things.

That's how the unicorn liked it.

"They see every little thing you do," she added after a few moments before giggling and shaking her head, "But as to your other question..." She took a few moments to admire her reflection in the lake before releasing a sigh. She supposed the spirits made the world sleep because they were like parents to their children. There were some times when you needed to take a break and have a little snooze!

"Well everyone has to sleep sometimes, the spirits need to make the woods and some of the animals sleep because they get cranky." She explained after a pause and flashed a smile, "And a cranky animal is never a happy animal - best to keep everyone happy, yes?"
PostPosted: Tue Aug 28, 2007 1:40 pm

The spirits always watch over you? Always? That little fact stayed in the baby's mind, as he pondered it back and forth. What if someone was accidently doing something horrid, and the spirits saw it? Would they forgive you? Ah! It was terrible just thinking about it, so Spot quickly pushed it out of his mind and decided not to ask the unicorn about it.

But it seemed she insisted on bringing up that subject, for Sparkles just answered his silent question. So they saw everything that someone did...it freaked him out knowing that someone was watching his...every...move. Be it good or bad.

"Everything?" He finally spat out, staring down at her. "Even...the bad things?" Spot took the moment that she did with her reflection to look at his own. He was so small...so very very small. How did the spirits know where to find him?

The baby giggled with the mare's next comment, nodding his head happily in agreement. "Yup, the world is a better place when you're happy, Muma says. So they do it to make the world a better place?"

"Even the bad things," Sparkles gave a giggle at the child who seemed to be somewhat worried by that fact. It was true that they saw everything but everyone did bad things and they were forgiven in the long term! Everyone made mistakes but that didn't mean that they weren't watched - they needed to be watched sometimes just in case.

"Because sometimes if you do something bad they'll try to fix it for you," she smiled a little more and glanced over her shoulder a little at the foal. He really was a curious one but very bright as well - every question he had asked, she had been able to answer he he absorbed the information like a sponge. She really hoped that in the years to come her children (if she was blessed with any) would be just like that.

"That's right, they have to make sure that every creature in the world is as happy as they can be. They're very special...the spirits," she glanced up at the sky and released a small sigh, she always claimed she could hear them talk but no one ever seemed to believe her. Maybe the babe would but then his mother may 'correct' him later.

Oh well.

"Sometimes if you listen very carefully you can hear them talking, you know."
