*Freebird looked at the dead and battered lion, then at Ghost, then at Casper. She was in a daze, evertything that had just happened happened so fast.*
..Casper seems to be alright. *She looked down at her foal, he was standing so close to her, burring his face into her side.*
And aside from that nasty scratch the lion gave me above my tail I'm fine..We'd surely be gone had it not been for you.

Ghost sighed in relief. "Good...your wound should heal fine, it doesn't look horribly serious." He snorted before continuing. "I've been keeping an eye on you and your colt for about 2 days to make sure you remained safe before returning to your herd. Don't thank me for saving you, I wanted to. Your colt is a handsome one. He'll make a fine young stallion." He stretched his neck down and sniffed at the little thing. "Well, I should leave. I don't you to get into trouble if the other mares find my scent on you or your colt." He turned to leave.

*Freebird watched as he left, she had accually been quite lonely, despite her colt and the attention he needed. She had never seen or heard any other mares and if there were any why would they be alone out in the wild.* You can't go... *She took a few steps after him but Casper stayed behind, unsure of .this new stallion, never having been around other horses.* I mean..You wouldent leave a mare and her foal alone, would you?

Ghost stopped in his tracks and turned his head to look at her. He chuckled at her intended guilt trip. "Alright, I'll stay. Another mountain lion attack could be nasty anyway." He turned and walked back to her. Once he reached her , he stopped, confused. "Wait....don't you have a herd to get back to?" He looked behind her at Casper and nickered to him reassuringly.

*Freebird then realized why he was concerned about leaving a scent on her and Casper.*
No..It's just me and Casper, acctually..His sire used to keep by us but just dissapeared one day, I never was sure what happened to him or where he went.

"Ah okay. Well, there is a small herd of mares own in the calley. I could show you wthout getting close at all. Come with me." He started off towards the mountainous forest then stopped. "Wait...his sire just disappeared?" He snorted angrily as one culprit to the stallion's disappearence popped into his head...humans, oh how he loathed them for what they took away from him...He could sympathize with the lonley mare, he knew how it felt to lose a loved one to those monsters. Just then, he caught another scent on the wind, and raised his head, sniffing the air. It was another mare, and she was close by. "It's getting dark...there are more than just mountain lions in the dark of the woods...Come on, let's go." he repeated and trotted toward the moutain forest again.

*She followed him on, enjoying to the fullest extent his company. Casper, still very new and unaware of anyone else's needs or the urgency to get to a safer place would try and make his dam stop to let him nurse every few steps, when Freebird carried on, looking back at him every once in a while to keep him going he protested and trotted ahead, as if to find another source of nourishment.*
Well then, thats enough to get me moving. I've seen more than enough danger and close calls to last me a few weeks.

Kipcha stood on a mountian ledge, the last of the sunlight her red-bay coat shimmered with hints of red-gold. She stood with her ears pricked, watching the sights below. From her mountian view she could only see glimses of things but the scents were unmistakable, horses were near by along with a mountian lion. She trotted down the mountian no longer entracned by the sunset. Following the scent she could eaisly pick up the trail as they seemed not to be in a hurry. The mare was stockier than some, but built perfectly for the wild. Her bones were strong, with a well defined head and perfectly sized ears. The muscles on her frame showed their power and allowed her to be as surefooted as she was. Tracking the horses wasn't a hard thing, sure she was wondering away from her own herd, but she had been doing so for many days and no one came to find her. Stopping at the lion's carcas she sniffed it and picked up the scent of two horses, but she thought there was three. Continueing on she kept quiet and straight on the trail of the others.

Ghost stopped dead and sniffed the air. He could smell the unidentified mare again, but her scent was MUCH stronger than before. He honed his ears in on all sounds he could take in, listening intently for the sound of hoofbeats. "Wait right here, I'll be right back." he told the mare and he cantered off in the direction they had come. He stopped when he saw the mare about 50 yards ahead, He whinnied loudly to get her to look up and see him, then he turned and galloped back to the mare and her colt, asking the other mare to follow him. Just then, something crosed his mind. "I don't we have been properly introduced. I'm Ghost. What is your name? and your colt's, if he has one yet. Oh and there is another mare on our tail, just to let you know. I don't perceive a threat, but stay close just in case." He turned and again headed toward the forest. "Come on, we need to make it to the top before dark...and we definatly dont want to be anywhere near the plains at nightfall. Humans occasionally come wandering out here to hunt." He said with disgust.

Kipcha automaticaly stopped and honned her ears on the stallion's call. She hadn't seen a stallion around here for some time as it had been a small herd of mares, a few with yearlings. Cautiously she trotted forward to join them, still moving as sliently as possible. The last glimpses of light caught her head and the coat there became touched with red-gold. She nieghed as she neared them and stopped with in ten feet of the trio. That's why there was only two scents, there's a foal. She heard the stallions plan to move up the mountian, a dangerous thing with a foal. "Do not forget Stallion, that you travel with a foal. Only a few days old by the look of him, and not quite as surefooted as you or I. The mountian is dangerous enough, be wise and choose a path he can climb." She didn't care how she appeared to the stallion she had a feeling that this was the mare's first foal and she wasn't as carefull with him as she should be. Right now her concern was that the little colt didn't get hurt because of a stupid miskate by a stallion. She was kind in the way she said her words.

*Freebird stopped and let him go back a little. Casper seized the opportunity and nursed with urgency. When Ghost returned the colt took no notice or care and went on with his needs.*
"Oh. I'm Freebird, and my foal is Casper...Another mare? Sounds like you might just be getting a bit of a herd before too long.."
*As the new mare trotted up to where they stood, Freebird felt a touch of anger, who was this mare to tell her how to care for Casper!?*

Ghost was prepared for her concern. "Don't worry, I've lived here since I was a colt. I know this mountain very, very well. I know the foal-safe paths, you don't have to worry about me being stupid, I know what I'm doing. You are welcome to join us if you please." He bowed his head to her a bit then returned his attention to the other mare called Freebird. "Those are beautiful names. You definelty picked the right one for this little one" He said motioning towards the colt. Noticing Freebird's reaction, he lowered his voice so that only she ould here, even with the other mare's excellent hearing. "Don't get so worked up, now. She's trying to be helpful. You don't have to take her advice if you don't want it..." He said kindly before turning to the new mare again. "My name is Ghost. And yours?"

"I am Kipcha, born and raised in this land." She looked at the foal and mare a hint of sorrow showing in her eyes, but not enough to give away her seceret. "I did not mean to interrupt, or affend. Only warn that mountian lion has hunted here for many years and has a mate that will come looking for him in a short while." Out of habit she kept one ear trained on Casper as she swung her head around to look towards the carcas. She swung her head back when she caught no fresh scent. "I would like to come with you, if it is ok," she looked at Freebird, asking her premission.

"Oh, I am full aware of that. I've lived here since I was born as well, but my mother..." He immediatly cut off, and his eyes saddened visably. He shook his head and continued. " Anyway, that wasn't the first time I've encountered that lion. I have plenty of run-ins with them, and yes, his mate is much fiercer, as she usually does the hunting. We'll have to keep Casper close by..." He turned and started walking off again. "Come on, let's go. Kipcha's right, the female will be well on her way by now. Let's go, right now, I'm not waiting any longer, especially when humans could be out any time now..." He began walking off toward the forested mountain again.
