Honestly...I think God has a pretty wicked sense of humour Himself, so I don't think telling jokes, even potentially offensive ones, is really sinful.

That being said, you should excercise caution about who and where you tell certain jokes. Some people can laugh at themselves and their faith, and will find even the most offensive joke hilarious. Others are more easily offended, and...well, it's usually a good general rule to avoid potentially offending people.

In my group of friends, we'll laugh at anything, no matter how tasteless. In fact, usually, the more tasteless the better. But I wouldn't repeat a lot of our humour in different company, just because...well, most people are more easily offended than we are.

So, in a nutshell, I don't think joking in itself is a sin, but you should be careful about what you joke about in certain company.

Generally, I think joking isn't a sin especially if no offense is meant and dealt to your neighbor or God.

Jokes are funny (they're suppose to be that way) and if it hurts the character of your neighbor or is irreverent to God, it does not become funny.

Lying, when committed in jest and when the truth is made apparent is not a sin since it does not violate the truth which is God Himself by concealing or misleading.

Jokes about religion would be alright it there is no irreverence to religion (especially our religion). We must however, maintain the sanctity and integrity of religion.

We must also avoid irreverence towards holy person (persons of either sex ordained by God through the Church. e.g. priests, nuns). Jokes relating to holy persons would probably be alright if it does not treat with disrespect their office and vocation.

A few jokes to relieve us from the stresses of living would be beneficial to us. Also the messages and lessons behind the jokes can provide us with a better appreciation of the things given to us. We just have to keep it within bounds and avoid jokes that aren't "funny".

It depends on what you say. If your in anyway putting someone down, yes. Even if it is yourself, that is I believe considered a sin. But society has become so tolerant that it has been dulled down.
