I heard that Sondheim had the power to kick out actors he didn't like for the movie, so I have confidence in Johnny.

The movie website has been remade so that it plays bits of music from the movie. It also has a clip from part of "Epiphany."

I have a friend who actually found an early review of the movie >Here<

I listened to the clips on the movie site, as well as watched some video clips somewhere oneline [my friend had found them and I don't know hwere]. Personally, I'm happy with Johnny Depp's voice. He's not perfect, obviously, but he's not bad. Helena, on the other hand? B-O-R-I-N-G. I hope "A Little Priest" is funny in the film, because it's not really funny to listen to them sing it.

The latest Newsweek magazine has a nice article and review of Sweeney Todd and it makes me want to see it so much. I was very worried until I read the magazine articles.

In that article, it says that they made it a movie and took out the play parts. This means to me that "Attend the tale of Sweeney Todd" parts are probably gone. Hopefully they saved it for the opening credits, but alas I think one of my favorite songs is gone.

I cannot wait to see the movie.

I listened to the entire soundtrack and here's what I have to say about each character:
Sweeney Todd - Depp is able to pull off the singing well enough but his real talent is in his raw acting. He is arguably one of the most dead-on Sweenys I've ever heard. He just has the existentialist emotion of killing people down so well.
Mrs. Lovett - I dunno, I guess she's alright. I think she sings too high and really doesn't have much of a feel for the complexities of her character. But she does scream wonderfully in the Final Sequence.
Anthony - He sounds like a girl. I'm sorry but I really don't like him at all.
Johanna - She has a very pretty voice and I think she'll be able to pull it off well but in the Final Sequence, her comments to Anthony are definitely border-line emo.
Pirelli - I think he definitely has made the character his own without too dramatically disturbing the delicate expectations. His voice is not great, at all. In fact it's a little scary at times. But he gets the job done and does it in an entertaining way.
Toby - He is very cute once you get passed the fact that you think Toby shouldn't be so young. He has a very good voice and I think he captures the innocence and Tobyish-ness well.
Beadle - I'm not too crazy about his voice although he is a very good actor. I feel like he's bringing a new angle to his character and I'm excited to see it.
Judge Turpin - By far, the best casting choice. Alan Rickman is Judge Turpin. He pulls it off so well and he has a very mature, Judge-like singing voice.
Lucy - I was disappointed. She mostly whispers through her songs and isn't nearly as crazy as I believe Lucy should be.

Delacroix_Ghost, did you get an advanced copy of the soundtrack? I thought it didn't come out till yesterday. My husband bought me a copy of the deluxe version yesterday and is holding it hostage till my birthday tomorrow. I'm dying to hear it all. I've only been able to hear the snippets of it online.

Yea, I got it off a website. The internet is an amazing thing. ^^

i just got back from seeing it, and i've got to say, this being my all time favorite musical, WHAT and effing letdown. there are so many things that were ridiculously wrong, not from a "Well it wasn't the same as the musical!" stand point, but from a directors stand point, the way things were shot, and choices actors made about their characters. i want my 10 bucks back.

i saw it earlier today, and i must say, i rather enjoyed it!

here's my two cents:

true, i was disappointed that several of the songs were either cut out completely or cut down (i was devastated no one sang the ballad of sweeney todd! it sets up the mood of the whole musical! and why the hell was lucy's solo in "no place like london" cut out?!!)

i was very impressed with johnny depp! sure, he's no michael cerveris or george hearn in the singing department, but i actually liked his singing, and i think he did our beloved sweeney justice. i WAS, however, disappointed with HBC. acting wise, she had it, and i got many laughs out of her. but her singing was waaaaay too soft and quiet for mrs. lovett (and the final scene was a let down, there wasn't enough emotion right before she died gonk ). i was surprised to see how young toby was, but it made him much more adorable, and makes you feel a lot more sorry for him by the end of the movie. and of course judge turpin was absolutely amazing heart the cast as a whole was actually really good! (casting borat as pirelli was a very pleasant surprise, and it worked out very well!)

despite it's imperfections, i found it a very good movie, and would not mind seeing it again.

(so much for 2 cents...that's more like 5 xd )

I went to a midnight showing last night. Here is my Livejournal entry with my full thoughts on the film, if anyone wants to read it. It's pretty long, though.

Basically though:

- Johnny Depp was an amazing actor, as always. The raw emotion in his voice made up for his untrained singing, IMO.
- Helena was not nearly as boring as I thought she was going to be. I actually kind of loved her Mrs. Lovett.
- Alan Rickman = tremendous. Cuz duh.
- Timothy Spall really is a great character actor. He was a pretty damned good Beadle.
- Anthony [no idea what the actor's name was] upset me. I laughed at his perpetually confused expression every time he was on the screen, and he just seemed too young.
- Johanna was all right. I'm not a big fan of the character, so, eh.
- Toby just...stood there. And waggled his eyebrows a lot. O.o
- The woman who played Lucy cracked me up with the way she said, "Mischief! Mischief!" I was sad about the lyric cuts for her part, though. It took away from her crazy.
- Sacha Baron Cohen wore the tightest pants known to mankind.
- Aesthetically, the film was absolutely gorgeous.

So, yeah. I pretty much loved the movie.
