Herald

07.03.07

He had watched the other Heralds at the Sanctum. The Herald knew what was going on and that it could not ignore the call that the Guardian have given to each of them. In order to stay secret, he had cornered the Guardian beforehand and offered up his own sacrifice - a small black glass rose.

Just like all the others, he had been taken back to Gaia, kicked out of the Sanctum while the Sanctuary rebuilt itself. Thankfully, he had been given some time, so returned a fraction earlier then the rest and was able to hide. One by one, he watched the others return and walk off...and it was then that he saw the group of people just outside the Cemetery Gates. One in particular called to him... and he decided he would pay her a little visit.

Why did he choose you? What was so special that he risked his life of obscurity to see you? Feel free to RP both sides, as he IS a teenager. What was his life like beforehand, and how did he live it?

Upon arrival - Follow the Leader

Tamuril couldn't seem to stop talking, it was like some sort of mothers' meeting! Occasionally Bethan would give a nod or shake in reply to one of her many questions but now it seemed pointless as the girl would continue no matter what happened. Even the sun was getting bored of her, setting in the sky like that, or so it seemed. So much had happened as of recent and this appeared to be the only moment she could reflect upon. Everyone was happy, reunited and heading home but there was still something nagging in the back of her mind. Something important had been missed or lost somewhere along the way. Plus there was the constant feeling she was being watched. It made her skin prickle very much like the time she was forced into the glass box. It was a horrid feeling and that was for certain - nothing easily shaken off though.

Bethan was starting to wish she had taken their free lift all the way home. Alas, there was no way that man, let alone a woman could turn back time, or at least that's what Bethan thought. Every now and again Bethan pretended to listen or at least be interested in what Tamuril had to say. She had taken to talking to herself now that Bethan wasn't paying any attention, but she wasn't taking into account anyone else around. Bethan wasn't going to be known for dating a mad woman, so it was for both of their benefits that she continued to pretend. Why, oh why, had she decided to go with her?

"Beth-an...what was that?" Tamuril whispered, the worry in her voice was enough to bring Bethan out of her trail of thoughts, at least for a while. The expression on her face was enough to prove her concern.

"What was what?" she pressed, talking in her normal voice. Tamuril gave her a hurt look trying to get her to lower the volume.
"Tami?" she asked more quietly, the was getting annoying. She wasn't one for games but Tamuril, well she was always good for one of those. All part of being social she supposed.

"You didn't see it...." an undertone of disappointment could be heard but she continued anyway. " I'm sure i saw something move, something behind us" Her voice was a lot quieter this time.

Bethan almost laughed at this. "Of course things will move! There are trees and cars and all sorts behind us" Just to prove this a car drove by splashing both girls with mud and water. Bethan stood there arms out, dripping with mud. It was like some scene from a cartoon, mildly entertaining for those that watch but enough to ruin your day if, of course, you happen to be the unlucky person.

"Oh great, see what happens?" Bethan groaned although she did believe what her lover had said. She had never lied and the feeling was more predominate than before.

They weren't that far away from home but with the silence, it might as well have been miles away. Bethan's eyes darted along the street while Tamuril was moving forward with caution trying to catch a glimpse of whatever she had seen before.

~~~
Footsteps beat along the street as clear as day, but they were moving slower now. He continued to follow anyway, there was something different about these two, especially the one who spoke less. The other seemed like a 'dumb blonde ' type to him. Not that blondes were dumb, it was just something he had heard on the streets. The sun started to burn him, a sign to move on. The light poured in through his blindfold, the cloth had been worn throughout the years...too bad...no the memory hurt too much to relive it now. He moved soundless on sending all his pain and regret into a tight ball. A ball in which he intended to use.
~~~

Bethan got to the gate first with Tamuril close behind. The pair didn't feel like splitting up and the small talk between them was uneasy. Bethan sighed and looked around before turning the key in the lock. The door 'clicked' into life sending out small vibrations. Bethan shook these off and presented the flight of stairs to her love. It wasn't going too far up the the stairs, only 3 floors in all, not like in the cities. The whole top floor would be empty as it seemed Bethan had yet to rent these out. Bethan made a note of this seeing as it was deadly quite during the day. Only deep down there was no way she wanted to be near any more humans. Tamuril was human enough as it is...over the years she had to pretend otherwise. She was different to the others, kinder and more understanding. Ugh, Bethan whipped herself with her tail, she shouldn't be thinking like that right now! They were already half way up. Only a few more steps to the top. Behind them there was the usual slam of the mechanical door only this time it seemed slower. 'Now I'm imagining things' she thought bitterly to herself. The Conversation had run dry only leaving the echoing tap of feet. It comforted Bethan a little, but she still didn't feel that safe, not until she could lock herself away and think.

~~~
He was in luck. The silly girls had not bothered to pull the door to and so it was easy. At least easier than he expected. All the other times he would have to use that little ball of energy but instead he let it dissolve in the evenings air. The male allowed himself a small smile tucking his hands away, his wings folded behind his back. The nights stay would be a whole lot easier inside although he did miss the feeling of, no, don't think of that, its all a lie, no-one cares any more, move on. It was not only the sun that burned him now, though its power was reduced thanks to the cool thick walls. He pushed his body against the sides listening to the pattern of steps ahead. They would tell him where to go.
~~~

“Bethan, do you mind if i use the roof....i want to work on my art”

“Fine, do you need any help?”

“Erm, i think i'll be okay...”
Bethan could tell from her body language what was going on. Does she think I'm stupid? She sighed again before replying.

“I'll get the ladder”

Tamuril blushed and opened her mouth to speak but she couldn't care less. There was too many strange things going on. The 'thing' that wasn't there, the delay, the third echo and that feeling, the one that made her remember. Her skin tensed, if she had fur it would of bristled but there was still some human inside. No, not human...humans where evil, nature proved it. The ladder shook in her hands. She wanted to toss it aside but something stopped her. She walked over to the window and set it on the rails placed there. The owner before her must of thought highly of safety which would explain the bars and such that she had torn out before moving in. No way in this life was she going to be caged again, not in any way known to man. She even refused theme parks for that reason. Bad things happened to those in cages.

~~~
The young male stood in the doorway and coughed. It smelt of birds and raw fish inside - disgusting. Well maybe not the fish. No-one appeared to be in the room yet ,he was sure the other went in here, it was the only room left. Well if they were out he would just have to make himself at home right? At least till they got back. Vanishing back to the....oh wait it had gone. Well he would just have to live from room to room and this place was empty and well stocked. He hoped to move back soon.
Upon arrival - Shaking Hands
Stage: Teen
Bethan pulled her head out from the under the window as quick as a cat in water. He green eyes lay viciously the intruder. Her whole body tensed up into a battle stance as she held her ground. The idiot had even decided to wear a blindfold of all things! There he was spreading diseases behind her counter, helping himself to their dinner! It had taken her ages to cook that!
“What On Earth Do You Think Your Doing?!” she demanded her eyes blazing wildly.
~~~

The herald looked up realizing his small mistake, he could feel the shift of air as she had once again entered the room. He put it down to too much time away and answered the question in a calm tone.

“Having a small amount of dinner before I go to bed....you seemed wealthy enough to provide something so i followed. I wou-” He was cut off.

~~~
“YOUR THE ONE THAT FOLLOWED US HOME!” she yelled picking up a few knives in one hand the other firmly gripped on a spare chair. In a matter of seconds she studied his person. There was nothing on him, expect some strange material but it was worse than she had expected. This was alwful, he-he-he was a Demon, an evil good for nothing demon. Dark presence, evil deeps, horns, he properly wore that blindfold to mask his demonic red eyes. She was almost certain thats what he was, if only the great demon master himself/herself came to claim this boy as his/her own.
“You sicking DEMON! Leave us ALONE, go back to where you came from! You don't belong here!” to illustrate her point to picked the chair fully off the ground and threw at his fore-head hoping to knock the **** creature away.
~~~

The herald ducked nearly missing the chair. He had grown used to this behaviour and his reflexes were kept up to the maximum, he depended on them too much to let them fail him now. He could not see the emery nor did he want to attack it, it would cause too much hassle. He tone was very defensive and cold with this particular person. Yet it was this one that had lead him to food, water and had that connection he couldn't quite work out. “Im not a demons, im a Herald can you not see that?”

~~~
Bethan was furious! Yet another demon claiming to a herald! A herald of all things, a angelic messenger! Worse he was doubting her judgement, saying she was the one in the wrong BUT she was NEVER wrong, only humans made mistakes! “How DARE you, you little LIAR, walking into my home trying to correct me! Who do you think you ARE?!”
~~~

The Herald noted the vibrations and could hear quite clearly the female was annoyed. It appeared to be the one that spoke less. Such a temper she had, all the time though he had to fight the urge to remove this blindfold. Seeing was beautiful but oh so dangerous to himself and the people around him. He could remember the first time he removed it, that was a long time ago...with his guardian. Was it then that she decided to abandon him? She looked so beautiful and wild but her face was horrified at his presence. That was the only time she yelled at him, and the first time that she....no mustn't remember that - focus on the present. What was the last thing she said? Something about a liar and something else. He couldn't remember. “I'm not a liar, I am a boy. I tell the truth as far as I know. If you were to call me anything then a call me by name.”

~~~
His voice was so calm it was irritating. She dug one knife into chopping board and held the other ready. She had never tried to kill before but the thought was crossing her mind slowly. She decided to wait for the events to unfold. Her mind though had other plans for her. She was already thinking of the links between the missing Heralds and this 'Demon' herald. This disgusting male had already proven himself a thief. "Heh! Name? YOUR name? I didn't think you owned one, unless you stole it! Just like all those heralds! Yes thats right i know your secret!" she laughed at herself slightly, she was starting to sound paranoid. Luckily Tamuril wouldn't be able to hear with the window shut.
~~~

The Herald shifted a bit. He wasn't going to give away the secret of the sanctum to a stranger but then how could he defend himself. Looks like the female had won. He had no name, the name he was given could not be used in public. He winced at the memory, why had she been so mean? It didn't make any sense! Hurt and defeated he replied meekly "I don't have a name....nor did i kidnap the heralds, i wasn't here when it happened, you'll have to trust me" He moved from behind the counter his mist now plainly showing. It embarrassed him at the best of times but now he felt even worse.

~~~
Bethan looked closely at the Herald stepping forward. His hands were shaking, hers too but for a different reason. She could not help but break him down further, after all he was a evil male, just like the rest of them. She ran her hands of the mist moistening them. The Herald looked very uncomfortable. She whispered cruelly in his ear, finding pleasure in the moment, "What am i do with you....you come into my house without even wearing pants, yet you expect a fight"
Something behind them creaked but neither paid notice. The creature shivered but tried to hide it. They were quite close together, the tension in the room was thick. "I can't help being me, forgive me?" The herald pleaded. Something was different about him this time, his defence had dropped to nothing. She almost felt sorry for him. Almost.
Upon arrival - Dinner party
Stage: Teen
"Bethan, whats going on?" A voice broke the silence within the room.
"We have a guest...." Bethan replied in a hurtful tone. This kid was okay, she guessed.
"Oh, Bethan, what have you done?" she paused her eyes on the herald. He was paler than paper, she had done her job well enough, at least for tonight. Although she was getting quite annoyed with the constant use of her name that evening. Tamuril new way of getting her attention worked well, but would soon have to fade. "He looks ill.....why did you invite him anyway? Thats not like you at all.... she faded off realizing her mistake.
~~~

He backed away without so much as of a word while the females continued there chatter and tried to find his way to the door again. Step by step, hears always on what was in front of him. Whenever he felt someone gaze land on him he stopped moving until they continued to chat. Almost there....wow where those girls fighting. The talkative one seemed kinder but the anti-social one.....well she was just getting more and more annoyed by the convasation, at least thats what he could hear. The actual words had been lost to him as he tried to escape. The air shifted suddenly. "Wa-"
"You are to stay for dinner....so we can discuss whether to hand you over the police" a voice from behind
"We would like you stay a while, to at least talk" the other chimed in.
"Erm, but im unwanted here....i should go" Darn- my voice was shaking....they were all around me. The space seemed to close in. The air grew thick and heavy, was there no way out? He backed up a little further into something warm. Oh my, that was the worst thing to do.

~~~
Bethan drew her arms around the Herald forcing his wings to fold. "Its this way to the table....we did have it laid out, but i suppose the leftovers will be enough right?" he ordered resting her chin on his head.
"Erm, er...."
"Move!"
The boy shuddered and moved forward, Bethan relaxed her grip slightly and followed recieving a stern look from Tamuril, what did she know of theives? Nothing thats what! The group sat down in the scattered chairs, the demonic one quite strangely. It seemed the mist was a lot more complex than it first seemed. Tamuril started to place, rice and cold curry onto each plate although she had no plate for herself she simply place a napkin down and ate of that. Looked like more dinner sets would be needed - that meant a visit to the shops again. Oh the pleasure! Bethan rolled her eyes and waited for the convasation.
"So, where do you live?"
"Erm, the graveyard?" it seemed rather relentant. Although Tamurils next line sounded a bit more worried.
"And you family?"
"I was beaten and thrown out....i have no family"
The convasation continued all the question for one person. Extremely boring, just like the one before it. After all that it was just some vagabond trying to make a living off others, theiving this place though, that was a bad idea. Both boy and lover brought their eyes up to Bethans. Darn the question had come up already.
"No, no, i can go back its easy"
Tamurils eyes just pleaded.
"Fine! The darn thing can stay, but hes mine to take of....if at any point, just once, hes a nuisence then thats it, i'll report him to the the police and then the O-"
"Ophanage.....they won't take him"
Everyone looked down, the boy stood up or flew, one or the other.
"Thanks for the stay, the food and company but i really think its time i went...."
"Heh, firstly you don't get away that easy, secondly you got that bed there....share it, and lastly your job is to teach me pet"
Both replied. "Pet?"
"Whatever....this way, you have chores in the morning" Bethan took the heralds wrist and walked him over to the bed. It was silly him wearing that blindfold, he was tense the whole time, proberly because of the speed. Bethan ruffled his hair getting a static shock almost immeditatly. "Good night, mistress"
She laughed and switched off the main light leaving only the kitchen and bed lamps on. "Tami, i think im going for an early night on the roof, sofas yours....oh and look after the boy, hes useful"
My Second Gift?
Stage: Teen
Dear Journal,
Today was a little different than I expected. Its dark now so i can write but its quite hard to get used to this kind of sight. I can only take off my blindfold when its pitch blank and tonights its finally cloudy enough, even the moonlight can't seep through. I'm not sure i want to write for long though, i've grown attached to my blindfold and the darkness. I sense too much like this, and i suppose there is alot of history behind this old thing. Anyone i don't want to write too much about that because it seems pointless now shes gone, homes gone and i think somehow this is a new start.
Females are terrible things though i must admit. Bethan my
Master is cruel to me mentally, she dosn't let me rest either...maybe i made too much of a bad impression? Well working isn't too bad, and Tamuril said if i get a job then she might go easy on me but shes no better. She keeps running off and abandoning me when i need her or fussing over me when i don't need it. Its such a pain, the other thing getting on mind is starting to like being with Bethan because of it. She dosn't talk much, unless she ordering me about the flat when she does it goes quite well, although she has a habit of calling me a girl - you know she, her? Its so strange, being a girl to her is better? At least then im not her pet, i wonder how long that will take to wear down. The other female i met was another Herald. She was pretty and angelic with wide eyes, but oh so curious, she made me nervious although meeting a Herald and actually talking to one was Amazing. I don't plan to go out of my way to do it again, once was enough.
This is the first time i've ever been able to write down my thoughts, i learned to write quite early but well, maybe i can write down the story later. I still hate to remember it. Bethan gave this too me, this book to
draw in orginally but she had a condition. For one reason or another i have to keep this book hidden, i don't really understand why yet, maybe i'll learn later - i sure hope so. I'm never going to leave his book, i'll keep it close to me no matter where i go, my second gift. My only true gift. The clouds are moving again, so i better go. I don't want to hurt my eyes not since i've had to go through so much trouble. Im saving them....
Love Hate Relationship
Stage: Teen
Bethan trapped the ruler angrily against the fridge, her hold on the leash was becoming tighter and tighter. Why wouldn't he obey! She gave him a bed, food, shelter and more or less a family. He had barged into her life not the other way around. It was time he understood where he stood in this family. Especially before Tamuril left for home. That was going to be pain, she didn't fancy her leaving so soon but with no real excuse she had to go sooner than later.
“Kain Nigel! KAIN!!” she shouted irritably “Get here you lazy excuse of a dem-Herald”
She had to stop calling him a demon, ever since the meeting with Cassie and Fiona she finally bagan to believe that her lover was right - this was a herald. It was still taking her quite a while to get used to it though.
“I told you get moving! There is NO NEED to cook today since you punishment was no dinner for a week if you hadn't forgotten. What you NEED to do is help CLEAN”
~~~

Kain sighed heavily and kept his distance from the beast. He replaced the cheese he had been saving into the cub-board he had managed to claim as his own. His wings were folded back catching the edges of his blindfold. There was only a dim light in the room that he could sense so he brought his eyes back in focus through the blindfold, catching the shadows through it.

“I've already done the dishes and counter tops....what's left”

“Have you tried the...” Bethan turned around wildly, she had been here just before and nothing had be done about it.

“the....” Kain repeated softly

“Cupboards?! They are as dusty as muck under your bed! You can do that next too!”

“Yes, they are done.....shall I go my bed now?”

“Why no! Come here you terror!”

The herald floated miserably over expecting violence or some other punishment fitting of her resent behaviour. Instead something quite different happened. The clatter of a ruler on the side could be heard as the mouse girl flung herself around Kain.

“I can't stand it....I just can't....where is she?”

Kain stood partly shocked, he moved his hands under her arms to stroke her back as she weakened. This was a first, a big one at that. She had been angry with him for a week and half non-stop, ever since Tamuril had gone out to friends and started checking out her own place. Tonight she was gone, tomorrow she could move her things out leaving Bethan and himself pretty much alone – not a good thought. Kain coughed slightly before trying to say anything but he wasn't the first to speak.

“I can't live like this Tami.....this boy, this male, ever since he moved in i've been on my toes and now you want to leave me. Don't leave me, you promised me”

Oh great, she flipped, gone loopy or something. Tamuril wasn't anywhere close, she was talking to herself. What was that the 1st or 3rd sign of maddness. Great he had picked mad guardian out of all of them. No wonder she felt different.

“I'm not leaving you, she isn't leaving you either just moving out”

The fridge hummed away with the freezer echoing in the near empty room. That's the way it felt for the both of them. The only thing they had agreed on was Tamuril and she wasn't going to be around any more. Kain knew he couldn't act as she did, there was some emotional bond between them like no other.

“But.....hes here, that male! That evil creature!”

Kain shuddered. He wasn't evil, everyone knew that at least everyone that knew him truly. Now he wanted to get away although it wasn't the right thing to do and more likely than not he would be in trouble. Yeah, trouble, he never went looking for it, it just came, past, and stood on him from time to time.

“I'm....hes not evil. Hes only as evil as you make him out to be....calm down”

He parroted the words he had heard only a month ago hoping they would work.

“All males are evil.....do you think I'd be like this otherwise!”

Her voice was getting harsher by the second. He had to act soon just to save his own skin.

“If it wasn't for males you wouldn't be here...” he said logically now shaking much more than she was.

“True”
~~~
Bethan got up and looked away. She moved over to the sink and blinked back tears. All along she known it was him she'd been speaking to, it was just she wanted to pretend; Pretend like she would with a child, that Tamuril was there still. Cold water lashed at her burning face clearing away all her thoughts as she muttered insults at herself. Kain stood dumbfound watching her ever move.
“Come here Kain”
She waited answered by nothing but gentle breathing.
“Kain Nigel!”
He shuffled forward as beckoned feeling the vibrations in the air. Her voice was on edge, not usual.
“I'll tell you something only if you promise me”
She turned studying his features. He was shaking so much she was starting to feel worse. None of this was his fault but she had made no mistake in punishing him. That was his fault, he came here.
“Look, you don't need to be scared come closer”
Kain stood just before her feet looking at his own, well at least in their direction. She was certain he couldn't see them. The wind played on the window as clouds ran over the nights sky.
“What else should i promise?” he whispered to her.
“That you'll never be like him
“Him?”
“Yes...”
“Okay, I promise not to be like him that I do not know”
That caused Bethan to smile a little just a little nothing more. It faded rapidly after she realized Kain had other ways of recognizing her mood. Click! The collar loosened around the heralds neck releasing his hair from its tight bonds.
"Mistress?”
“No...pet, its Bethan to you...Kain?”
“Yes Bethan?” he said obviously trying her name.
“Heh, have you ever hugged anyone....”
“No...” he sounded confused.
“Nevermind then....you take care of me now”
~~~
Bethan moved off the edge of the counter and laid down on the sofa curling her tail over the side.

“Take care of you?” he asked quietly. She didn't move she he asked again louder “Take care of you?”

His ex-master didn't even notice, he wondered over to her listening to her silent voice. The one of calm breathing, the one that said rest. That night had been a strange one, and it looked like 'Bethan' was tired after all. He moved over to the bed and pulled back the covers curling up into them. He felt vulnerable sleeping like this, but tonight was oddly peaceful. The tiger had fallen to sleep and now only the sound of rest could be heard.

Kain removed a small piece of bread from under his bed and nibbled on it until it had vanished. He licked his fingers disappointed. “Looks like I'm the only one who will remember this in the morning” he muttered to himself as Bethan began to snore. If only she wasn't on her side!

Warmth radiated throughout the open plan room as Kain started to fall into another dream. He had learned so much today....maybe just maybe he should write it down....'Bethan fears men.....and its not my fault. Finally....its not my fault' this last thoughts as the darkness took over his body - Another night another nightmare.

A Very Good Morning - Mistress?

Stage: Teen

The open plan room echoed its silence as the young Herald shuffled over to the damp kitchen sink. He ran the cold water over his burning face careful not to effect his precious blindfold. A tear washed away with the fresh water as Kain sighed sorrowfully to himself. In the background lay the curled up figre of his master turning in her sleep but Kain could only feel the constaint beating vibrations in the air. thump, thump, waver, waver, It worried him, much like Tamuril had worried about his dreams, but because of this he put it down as normal and left her to it. It wasn't that he didn't care it was just that Bethan was always a strange demi-breed. Never a dull moment at least.

Kain spun the tap with a squeak cutting off the water completely. He felt for the cupboard resting on the wood for several seconds before actually pulling out two clean glasses. Out came the milk, causing Kain to shiver as he poured it carefully into both. He screwed on the green cap and quickly shut it away hoping not to make the room too cold before day. It would take ages before it would warm up again. He placed the glasses in the microwave and fiddled with the buttons until he heard the right combinations. The tune he heard was awful but he had heard it used so many times now. It took him a little while to find with lots of trips to the cancel button but soon the mircowave was whirling into life, filling the almost empty room. As he waited he cursed to himself quietly before lapping up the milk running across his wrist, a sharp memory poisened his thoughts but he moved on....always moving on.

Some time later, Kain Nigel had set a breakfast tray of warm milk, strawberry jam, soft butter, crisp toast (though slightly burnt), two eggs and a side of bacon, the only thing missing was the orange juice and beans, both in which Kain had completely given up on. The kitchen was a total mess with many open tins and cut cartons, his handiwork of course, trying to find the finishing touches. He stroked the strem of a window flower, wondering why so many females liked them before snapping it without too much thought - that too was added to the tray. He lay his gift on the floor beside bed in which Bethan now slept. He waiting for her to stay completely still before brushing back her hair and whipsering morning in her ear.

The herald stumbled back, it would only be moments before she woke up now, that was all it took. Thud, there went the english book, striaght across the room as it cluttered back against the plant pot, coating itself in damp soil. No wonder Tamuril never watered the plants first thing. The memory of her leaving shocked the boy back into reality, the reason he was going through this became crystal clear once more. He shivered as the mouse-girl dragged herself within an inch of him on the way to the bathroom. He inhaled quicky freezing just the vibrations grew fainter and the sounds soft on his ears.

"Remember to cook this time...." she said spitefully slamming the door to make Kain jump yet again that week.

Kain fell back against the sofa mumbling he had done. She hadn't even noticed the tray yet....did she care? He placed it up on the table and rearranging a few things sadly. There was no impressing someone that hated your existance...then again it could be the disappearence of Tamuril. Why did she have to leave at a time like this? Another tear crossed his face ruining the milk he had placed out already. Normally he would care but today was different. Today was his first day without any real hope. Everything had gone down hill ever since he made the mistake of following these girls. All those years he had been careful and then he had to trip up and leave his only true home for a life in an earthly hell. He brought his wings tightly around him straining his back a little as he waited for his 'ex-mistress' to return. The black thorns from his dark wings dug into his flesh reminding him of his sorrowful existance. Day by day he had learned it as routine now, nothing had changed to her. Kain tensed himself cover his cover biting hard down on his lip. 'I don't belong...im not here....i don't belong here....'

"I don't belong....i just don't!"

Another tear followed the first, as unbalanced as his feelings it joined the other. The herald winced cursing himself for thinking about it any more - he was loosing self control. He clenched his hands feeling the energy build up as always. He supressed it only for a few seconds but it was already prying his hand open. The energy whirled around in its sphere, catching the light its holder could never see. Anyone looking into it would see the night of the storm, flashing by, his anger, glueing the poisen rays together and the signs of distruction as it burned his skin.

"Enough!" he choked his hands shot open of their own accord at that very moment.

There was a large bang and a thump on the bare floorboards. Kain clentches his hands once more shivering all over. The smell of burning sorrounded him, a hot flush covered his face as he backed away from the sofa....he mummered out names in his fear. Everyone he knew...the last one he needed.

A Very Good Morning - Flames of Fury

Stage: Teen

Bethan cleared her face from the running mascra once more. She could not leave this room without leaving traces of her morning, even though deep inside she knew it was un-needed but still she needed to clear up the mess once more.

Her ears had been lowered by habit in the mirror, they flicked up as soon as she glanced away from the mirror but she personally prefered them down unlike what she had been told before - maybe it was part of the teenager inside of her. The mouse-girl patted the powder across her face once more...a gift from the time the girls went to the cosplay faire. It had been fun and but their character were so wrong for each other.

If Bethan had whiskers they would of been twitching, instead a more annoying sensation of itchiness took over the female. She turned away from the mirror hearing her name quiet clearly from the other room. It was Kain again. He had been shouting serveral strange things for some time now often ending in silence though it was odd to call her name without reason. He knew the punishment for that all too well, but then there was always a chance he would forget. It had her interest for about a minute that was until she smelt the smoke, it stang her skin silently throwing off the itch it had caused earlier. No wonder why she felt a little on edge.

The lock was still cold to touch, a good sign in anyones books but then Bethan missed that fact completely, along with any consideration for the wall paint. As the door swang back a little, chips of paint floated down to the floor and a dent was easily visable but both Herald and 'mouse' were intent on the table.

~~~
Kains heart beat twice as fast on Bethans enterance. To be honest he wasn't really expecting her to turn up but he needed her more than anything. Worse things had happened to him but the concept of uncontrolled fire scaried him. Its wildness, its drestuctiviness, its power, all greater than his own....and the ability to touch was out. Loosing one sense to sentitivity was fine but loosing two was frightening. The herald was litertally glued to the ground. His breathing became more rapid and he heard the beast get closer to him.
"KAIN! What in HELL have you DONE?!" he heard his guardian yell more in anger than any sort of fear. He wondered briefly if she had gone through it before but his mind was still focused on what he had unleashed.
"For the sake of life! Get some water and a towel boy! she said irattiably
~~~
"I....i-can't" Bethan heard him mutter.

"You CAN, you MUST" she shouted at him stamping furiously at the flames that had found there way to the floor.
It was more than obvious that they were going to need a new table as well as new floorboards.

"Damn male" she hissed barging past the motionless creature, knocking him back again a couple of chair.

Bethan tugged at the door to the landary and ran the cold tap of the sink fast. She threw large random items into the sink, soaking them almost instantly.

~~~
Several minutes later he heard her call on him again, this time he was shivering less, repeating to himself it was all under control. The fire wasn't massieve, not at all, and Bethan was there seeing to it. Yeah a small fixed fire on their living room table. Otherwise she would call the fire brigade wouldn't she? He didn't have much faith in that but then his thoughts were already cut off.
"Break. The. Table."
Bethan had taken to talking slowly to Kain in these situtions in order to get her message across, some of them he was able to follow, others he couldn't go through with for moral reasoning or just phyically impossible for him. For example she had already asked him to fly the table outside and it was a fact that he did not know how to fly since loosing his sight, as well as the fact he could not bare to lift the table.
Cold sweat ran along Kains spine and caught on his wings cooling him gentally, it took a little time for the order to sink in but it made perfect sense...she wanted to save it - he knew that.
"How?!"
"You know i told you never to STAND. ON. IT. well do THAT." was his reply. She had said spitefully as if he was retarded but then silly questions get silly answers no?
He drew his wings back and jumped forward blindly landing on his hands. With great luck he missed the flames completely landing just before the surface mist cirling around him. He wasn't heavy enough, not enough pressure on the air above. All those days without too much to eat and a fair amont of work had kept him light but with no mucsle. No wonder he felt a little taller than before...it wasn't like he was growing anymore - floating more like. He paniced, banging his arms on the surface in attempt to break it only by chance he left his hands unburnt thought the warmth gave him a good indication it was very near. It didn't seem to make any difference at all.
The fire became a flaming beast once more, bonding around the helpless boy. Its smoke choked him, flames always close enough to burn, and deep within it roaring sendind waves of heat in his direction. Kain spluttered on his once breathe, being too close the fire. His fears brought up more hullionations, such as the pheonix he had read one time and dark hell hounds of camp stories he had listened to over the years. Kain started to feel a little dizzy, his balance put off completely, the last thought occurring to him finished as he hit the table, now unconcious.
A Very Good Morning - Back to Bed with You
Stage: Teen
Bethan watched in shock as the mist spread across the table. At first she wasn't sure where it was coming from at least at first. The air was still thick with smoke but now also with water. It was so strange. She dropped her soaky towels onto the fire knowing now they wouldn't burn as the mist cooled them. It slowly made its why around touching her wrists carefully. Bethan shuddered it was so cold, as cold as....well the affection she had given the boy.
It was obvious now, the fire spat one last time as the herald fell but had stopped so soon after. Among the broken table pieces was that digusting male she was forced to call family. He had caused all this, hadn't he? Then why did it feel so awful to watch him like that.
Kains face was still very pale but his figre was still as normal as you could get for the young herald. His 'legs' had returned back to their normal state as if nothing had happened but his guardian stood there shell-shocked. Within the essence of detruction there was birth...even if it was the birth of destruction it was still a cycle.
Bethan shook her head, making her muddy brown hair fall about her face. This wasn't right, maybe she should leave it, was that right? No it wasn't, Tami wouldn't want that at all and she knew it. She sighed watching the breathing of herald. He was living she could see that....but there was no way she was going to take care of him first.
The mouse-girl coughed as she opened the window to the roof. She had half a mind to go out there to cool off herself but she still had respondibilites no matter how much the burden. Maybe she would get rewarded later - that was a motive.
A gentle breeze forced the smoke out into the mornings air, though soon enough it would be lunch already. She stumbled back over to Kain cursing. "There should be nothing but table on the floor, stupid herald" she muttered angryly hoping somehow the male would hear. No such luck however. Bethan rolled her eyes before looking at the mess that had been caused. Milk and orange juice covered her white living-room socks and bread making up her shoes. Just great. Now she would have to clean this up too. For a short moment in time she smiled, a small realisation hit her as she saw a name on the tray and of course the flower but as all good things it faded as she sure half of what she had caused.
Out of pity Bethan kneeled by the Herald. "You've caused so much trouble....but then you don't know whats going on now? Do you? You came at a bad time....but i know what its like to live out in the world....maybe you still don't she whispered with a sigh in her voice. Bethan slipped a hand under Kain arms scrathing her skin against the corse fabric. From there she slipped him up over her shoulder, unsure where to go from here. She looked around for a few seconds. Slowly getting to her feet not wanting to drop Kain at all her goal already spotted. The bed....thats what he needed right? Well it was that or a bath.
Gently placing the boy on the end she sat on the floor beside him. The place was a mess but still it felt a little better now...though the reasons were unknown to her in that moment it was easy to see what was happening. Bethan stroked Kain Nigel's beautiful black hair, feeling a little more than pity as she placed it softly around him rather than scattered about his pale face.
For the first time in his presence Bethan noticed the horn. Broken and crumbled. She winced hoping it had not been caused today. Then it would be her fault...and taking the blame was hard most of the time. She hadly ever did it. Especially for the existance of such a....no she mustn't think that any longer. She placed her fingers over it, wondering if there were any nerves in it or if beyond hope she was safe. Kain groaned a little, causing Bethan to back off completely almost falling over. It had caught her by suprise but if he won't she wasn't going to show him that - no she would tell him off for his pointless drustruction.
Kain nigel turned on his side, feeling cool and comfortable. It was a change for certain. He didn't reconize it here, not at all. Maybe it was a dream or maybe just maybe he was back home on a cloud. Where is was safe. He stretched his wings sending a ray of greens over the silent room and left them there so he could warm a little in his sleep. Glass wings were always cool....but fragile.
Rings and Roses
Stage: Teen
The mist rolled in bringing the torn leaves with it. Another summers morning, too early for the clouds to move on it felt. A sweet aroma of crushed rose petals swirled up and around the herald and he streaded the plants bit by bit into a small bowl. Behan watched him from a distance, he had been up all night doing the same thing over and over and she refused to sleep until he had gone inside himself. Her tail was coiled around the door handle keeping her up while her hands rested against the frame keeping her from sleep.
Kain sighed letting in juices run over his hands as he cut more and more leaves from the bushes. Roses - just like life. Beautiful and enchanting at first but painful and cruel when touched. To truely live, you must live numb from feeling but it was all he had. He hummed a rhyme to keep his spirits up warm air cooling with the damp mist. It filled his thirst, no need to drink today but his clothes were soaked through. What did it matter anyway? He continued the song shooing all other thoughts.
"Ring a ring o'roses,
A pocketful of posies.
"
As a tear rolled down his cheek Kain arranged the petals he had collected into a ring stabbing at the leaves he had crushed. Thorns found their way into his skin but he didn't care any more. He only ever wanted one thing in life and now he knew it would never happen. Never....but it wasn't like he was allowed to leave. Now he couldn't even go home and feel the comforting vibes of peace. No, even that had left him. Kain shuddered and sang the next line. It had taken him only a week of watching to learn it but this was the first time he had tried to sing it.
"ah-tishoo, ah-tishoo.
We all fall down.
"
Kain pulled his hands into fists and let the tension build into two small balls of energy. The tear mixed with the mess on the ground floor. He shouldn't be here, not in the dirt, not in appartment, not in this town.
"I DON'T BELONG HERE!! He shouted breaking apart mist as it rose further in the sky forming a cloud. Gaia was a strange place, low clouds in summer but then it had rained enough the past few weeks. Oh who cared?! No-one! No-one cared for anything but themselves! It was the truth and he had years of proof!
The energy fixed itself in tight knots, focusing as the hurt and anger built up inside of its maker. It spun in a clockwise motion causing small sparks to break off into Kain Nigels hands.
Enough! Kain brought the two together forcing the balls to merge throwing them forward into pattuern. Dirt, mud, petals and leaves raked themselves up from the ground a showered themselves down onto the herald. Shocks of electrical energy moved from finger to finger, from head to his mist. This was his most dangerious form. He ended it with a single word.
"Kain Nigel?" came a fearful voice. "What are you doing?"
Kain looked to her and sighed, "Nothing important. Just hate it like this"
"Can you come inside please im tired..." she had tried to say she was sorry for him but it just wouldn't come out. He was one of those evil males....even if he was hurt and angry inside.
"Fine, if i must, i must" the energy dissolved out into the world causing a few plants and insects to die along its way but nothing amazing happened this time, he wasn't strong enough mentally to do much damage to the world.
As soon as the Herald floated past her, Bethan fell asleep on the steps. Too many things had happened lately and she just couldn't deal with it anymore. Something had to change somewhere but for once it wasn't her.
A few hours past and Kain cooled down. He drank some water and opened his journal at the back recording everything that was negative, everything that had hurt him that day. It was depressing but calming, everything he ever needed to tell someone he could just write down - it was just like telling the book. No-one need know anything about him, but he didn't have to bottle it up. Occansionly he would ink blot the page without noticing but as he wrote the anger and hurt left him in the form of little swirls of text. He tried to keep them as neat as possible since it was his first as only book. It had been decided, the start of the book was for anything positive or at the very least neutral and the back was for anything negative or bad. He would never read the book once he had written in it, as it was near enough impossible but at least anyone who happened to read it would get a better impression of him than he had himself, so long as they didn't read the back pages.
A thud brought Kain's attension back to Bethan. The noise echoed up to Bethans apartment, although it was faint, it was proberly enough to wake up those on the ground floor. Kain dropped his pen back under the bed and placed the book along side it.
As he left the apartment he left the door slightly ajar so he could return easily. It didn't take him very long to get down the stairs has he had much practice by doing his chores to Bethans standard as well as the fact he didn't care too much for falling with his wings spread as it would be easy enough to glide most the way if needed.
His guardian laid in almost an unnatural position at the bottom of the steps. It looked as if his had tried to return to her room but had fallen down the stairs in the process. At least Kain hoped this was the case, the idea that Bethan was attacked made him shudder. He pushed this to the back of his mind as he gentally felt for any broken bones. Bethan was strongly built so it wasn't likely but it was better to certain than likely. Anyone watching may of though Kain was the one that attacked her, so he didn't leave her like that long and his actions were caring but quick lacking skill and precision.
After Kain was quite sure Bethan was alive and breathing, without any need for an ambalance at least he brought her up and over her shoulder. He would of liked to of carried her in his arms, but due to his lack of strength and the fact his might trash out if she woke up he was forced to carry her the way he was taught to. Just to make sure she was safe he tried to angle his wings so that it would sercure her in place.
As swiftly as Kain made his way down the stairway, he brought Bethan up, though occansionaly he stopped for breathe. One day he really would have to see about excercising properly, but for now it was pointless, he was already in the situation.
Kain used his free wing to push open the door, he made his way across the room and felt around for the bed. Unfortunatly it found him first causing a very sharp pain in his arm. He slid Bethan off his shoulder onto the bed, she grumbled. Kain sighed with relief. The herald seeing no point in taking any more steps for his guardian left her that way for the rest of the night. It wasn't that he was mean or nasty, it was just whatever he did, he would have to pay for in the morning, good or bad, just because he was a male.
A little Game
Stage: Teen
Weekends were always boring, but this one particlarly so, and just to top it off it was raining. Neither guardian nor herald wanted to go out, just plainly be miserable with one another. The room was well lit as the sun wasn't suddenly dissappear behind the dark black clouds, nope, it was staying right there to glare at the two. There was no wind to move the clouds away anyway let alone over the glowing sphere. Heard to beleive the sun was nothing but a little star out in the universe. For a change it was adding the usual gloominess of the household.
In one corner of the room lay half a dozen shopping bags that Kain Nigel had brought in earlier that day - soaked of course. One bag had evidently split but much to Kains disbelief he had not been scolded or even forced to put away the shopping. It was nice to have a break, just nothing to do it - that was the problem. He sighed giving a few strokes of his stong wings to bring himself up high enough to swirl on his mist. It may of seemed odd to most but he worked quite early on he could hover without his wings as long as he balanced on water vapour, it was something to do with forces, or forces against the usual nature of the world.
As he unpacked each bag onto the counters he heard a slight cough or at least noticed the flickering vibrations. He turned for a few moments but hearing nothing more continued to do his work out of pure boredom, thinking bitterly to himself 'at least it smells nice'. The last job he did unasked was cleaning the loo - not nice. Just as he was shuddering a noise came from the side of the room again though this time a forced cough. He dropped the bag slightly annoyed and turned again.
"Yes?" he asked trying to hide the irritance in his voice. Though unknowingly visble is his body language.
"Want to take a break for change?"
It was clearly not a question more of a demand, but at least that meant she had something planned right? Kain decided to test her anyway.
"What if i don't?"
"Then be plain miserable then!" The mouse-girl raised her voice curling her tail angerly. She was sick of tired of putting up with nothingness. Tamuril may of been happy sitting around all day but she certainly was not. "You can't say i never try!"
"Can too" The herald muttered to himself but floated over anyway. "What do you want to do then?"
"I want to play a game"
Why had it seemed they reversed roles here?
"Go on the computer then?"
"No, WITH you"
This was getting irratiating. "I can't see the screen i can't play....i can hardly do anything"
"Don't get mouthy with me boy.....Guess the object?"
"Too easy"
"Hide and seek then?"
"Too childish"
"Avoid the bookcase"
"wa? How do you pl- oh! Hide n seek is fun"
"i thought so"
Kain slumped down on the foor his hands, this was going to be a long day. He didn't want to this....he'd fail this too....he hid most of his life thanks to the horrible woman - yet he came out of hiding for this?. None of it made any sense. He didn't even know how to play proberly, just the fact he never heard of a teenager ever playing it. If anyone found out it would be humilating but he didn't really know anyone right?
"So....er, what are the rules?" he asked a little nerviously but more intend on his own depression and fears than Bethans bordom.
"Oh, come on you must know how to play!" She snapped back at him, he wasn't even trying. "What kid hasn't played hide and seek?"
"Me...." he answered meakly.
Bethan sighed...it was true, he wasn't the only one. She never got to play herself, thanks to her past. Another thing she missed thanks to the stupid side of the male race. Part of her wanted to force on with the game, but the other, the more loving side told her not to. The whole experience was just plain confusing.
"Well, what do we do then?"
Kain thought for second unsure of what to say. Then he remembered something Tamuril used to say to him whenever he was stuck on something. She'd always brought him back work from the local school in hope that he would learn it eventually - being Tamuril, strangly right in most cases. He sighed before trying a smile in Bethan's direction - it might work "'Look it up somewhere, or if your really stuck ask someone!' " he quoted.
Bethan gave him a strange look at first. The pharse sounded famliar but she couldn't quite place it. She wanted to smile but then she wanted lash out, she wanted to play but not be too forceful for once. The whole situation made her head hurt.
"You okay?" a voice broke her trial of thought.
"I miss Tamuril" she said without thinking.
"Me too..."
There was a gloomy silence before both guardian and herald said, "Want to visit her instead of this? though ending at different times. Kain gave a fearful look and Bethan taking on look at Kain face burst into laughter.
several minutes later
Kain brought the phone to Bethan both of them ready to leave the house without even asking Tamuril. Bethan put on the same clothes she had worn to go the featival all those months ago, while Kain had no luck this time....just neatened up the clothes he was found it. At the time it hadn't occured to him to change clothes as he never really remembered doing that as a baby/reborn. Bethan managed to find horn polish to make them sparkle a little though this made no real difference to Kain.
"Hell-o~
"Hiya me and-"
"You have reached Tamuril's answear machine, please leave a message after the tone beeeep "
"Hey Tami, we are coming over as soon as the rain stops! I know your in the house somewhere! Love you! See ya!
Tamuril was known for not bothering to answer the phone, unless she knew who was calling, as neither of them had caller id and no message was given in person - she wouldn't know to pick up. It was a well known fact, Tamuril didn't like salemen, and if she was anything like Bethan wouldn't of even bothered with a phone but thankfully she wasn't.
Bethan blushed soon after leaving them message only just realising Kain Nigel was still listening to her, but she covered it up quickly but sending him off for a cup a tea to wait with. The rain would end soon....it better do. A visit to someone so dear meant too much to be missed so easily. She wished so badly she never gave a set time....but it wasn't like her not to.
She sighed leaning back in her chair, while the rain passed the two of them could talk, that would solve her problem. Just she'd need to forget he was male - that couldn't be too hard - right?
Oh not this - The Vistor
Stage: Teen
Kain laid out on the bench as the snow difted down to the ground. It had been unnatrually cold for some reason. He blamed it simply on global warming though, after all it was still only early spring, and it wasn't like it hadn't happened before. As he lay he had brought his wings up to cover his face and chest where he felt the cold most easily. Tamuril had lent him Bethans old blue jumper though he had borrowed Tamurils green one too. He had no idea where the two got them from, but they both looked like they came from a set. Luckily he was thinner than both of them and fit one over the other easily. His blindfold was fit a little more snuggly today and the main thing keeping him warm with a thick green and yellow stripped scarf. Not that Kain noticed but this dangled over the edge of the bench by more than a little. The coldest part of Kain today was the thick mist speading over the rest of the bench. The snow helped his thrist and made it easier to float and glide. Like it was harder for humans to walk on ice, it was easier for Kain to walk on wet things. Land was more troublesome.
Over the half hour the Herald had laid there, snow had started to build up on his wings and the mist gave him that kind of 'encanted cave' kind of look. Not that he was any way part of the landscape but that was as it appeared. His well padded chest moved only fractionally up and down to show he was a living breathing thing. Though he was well seperated from the white snow with his pitch black hair.
The air smelt damp, yet sweet because of the near-by roses. They still managed to survive through the cold season, and constantly reminded Kain Nigel to do the same thing. Kain had been pondering this as he fell asleep and so it was what he dreamed also. He dreamed of many things, such as seeing in the light, walking with two legs, making friends, happiness...roses, everything he wanted really.
Crunch, crunch, crunch was the soft sound over the snow. For once this did not wake the catious herald but send him further into sleep as it mingled with his dream. Crunch, crunch, crunch the sound got a little louder. For a minute Kain was certain there was a tug on his scarf, but no it was just part of his dream right. Just like the extra warmth on his chest, the weight of what he assumed was snow through his wings, the gentle purring and was that a mew?
Kain blinked under the blindfold, bringing himself to his senses slowly. There was SOMETHING on him. What he did not no. "Who-ever you are....whatever you are....please move off me" He asked nerviously. All he got in responce was a curious mew. Kain refusing the risk of shaking his head, as was a habit at this point in time, placed a hand out over the creature expecting to feel it. Slowly he brought it down until he reached the damp fur. Thats when he laughed with relief. "A kitten! he laughed "Your only a poor little kitten!"
A little while later, after getting over the shock Kain was sitting under the bus shelter holding onto this frozen kitten, stroking it continiously as it purred, he liked the feel on his skin. "What am i going to do with you kitty?" he asked the cat "Not like i can just take you home.....or can i? he asked no-one. Maybe....i could just hide you, she'd be scared of cat, being a mouse and all. And she loves animals anyway....you'd fit in fine. Much better than in here anyway." The herald continued for several minutes saying his plan outloud convicing himself it would work.
The kitten had no collar, and was sick from the weather, it was obvious that it had simply been abandoned, which touched the herald. Abandoned - just like himself. He had gone out especially and bought the cat a scarf of its own. Just to bundle it up in. Even in its poor condition the kitten was quite content but this wasn't enough for Kain. That was it - he WAS taking it home no matter what was said.
Kain shook the snow off his wings as he paid the fare for his jorney back home from town. For once there was a warm glow in his heart and a smile on his face. It was like he was back home in santum all over again. This was a fresh start, for demon like himself, it felt a lot better than usual.
Oh not this - Breaking an entry No2#
Stage: Teen
On the bus ride home Kain Nigel had recieved some rather strange looks. Though he himself was not phased as no-one said anything to make him think this was the case. He had chosen to sit at the back of the bus with the kitten mewing under the second jumper. To anyone looking, what sat at the back of the bus was not a lonely teenage herald boy but a pregant mother looking over at her tummy in which mewing was appearing and smiling about it - a strange sight indeed.
Luckly for the confused passerbys he didn't have very long before the stop and he intended to leave rather quickly. This wasn't because of the fear of being caught for once but the fear of snowballs. Large amounts of wet mass pounding him on each journey in or out. All were silent and dangerious, and he could never see them coming. Just to increase his small parania their were voices all around him. Voices of little children laughing continuiously, happily and the crunch of snow as new ammo was built at his expense.
With one hand holding the sneezing mass close the other held the key for the building at the ready, he dashed down the street for the appartment door head down, mist rolling off in random directions as it hit the snow. The kitten gave out a gentle mew of fright as it was wisked along at great speed. Clang, jingle jingle The key hit the lock of the door as Kain feveriously attempted his entry without a hit. A few seconds past....finally! The key found its place in the lock and turned. Kain sighed with relief and entered through the door. Thud, Sploosh he was too late. Tiny bits of ice and snow melted into his clothes and down his neck, a slightly numb patch on his now pale face."Im so sorry" he said calmfully to the kitten. "I tried"
Kain removed the kitten from his jumpers carefully untangling its claws as he went. He re-arranged the scarf it was wearing so it covered the feline almost completely. The kitten mewed shivering, looking up at Kain wide-eyed through Kain could not see he felt the shivering at held the kitten close once more as he travelled the steps slowly to the top dreading his entry.
Key to lock once more, the sound of rock music came from inside, Bethan was certainly in. He groaned and turned the key and pushed the key, the door opened slightly and threw itself back into place hitting the herald firmly in his cheek, returning feeling to his 'numb patch'. He resisted the urge to curse and hushed the kitten. For a few minutes he pondered his next action, his plan was unravelling by the second.
Gloomly the boy and kitten found their way to the roof, ice cold winds whipping in and out of fur and cotton. Occansionally Kain would get a nice lash as his long black hair hit him, or tiny squeaks and claw marks from his precious bundle. He pushed through the snow that had built up here, trying to sense where everything was as now both hands were cling onto the kitten. His colourful wings shielded him leaving little patches of colour in the snow.
As soon as Kain managed to find the edge of the roof, he stretched his wings out dispite the snow and jumped, gliding down to the balcony. He had done this many a time but it was a lot harder with the wind pushing his fragile body against the gritty wall. The kitten had hushed itself into silence in pure terror. Small wingless mammals were not meant for flying, let alone gliding or jumping off heights without a view of the ground.
Kain pulled open the balcony door, and swung it shut behind him without much care. He listened wary of the danger he was now in. Sensing through the mix of vibrations he threw some out himself and got a good 'look' of the room.
It had seemed Bethan had rearrange all the furnature to the walls of the appartment as she worked on her training program. The door was barred by a dresser and table, through not deliberate Kain still felt a little hurt at the gesture. She had completely forgotten he existed or had at least not noticed his dissappearence.
It didn't take long for Kain to realise he could proberly sneak past i hide the kitten in the bathroom, for now at least. Just a little closer to Bethan and then the door. He nudged himself forward, little by little.
The kitten nuzzled into Kains jumper for a little while warming up alot now he was inside. He pawed the jumper trying to suckle as if Kain was his mother ironicly. Just then he could the scent of a fresh young mouse. He flicked his ears back and looked up over kains trembling hand. His eyes seemed to spark alite as they settled upon the mouse girl. All the fur on his back stood on end and he arched his back and he hissed fieciously.
Alarmed both Bethan and Kain looked down at the trouble-maker. He kitten aware of the trouble he'd caused bit down hard on Kains hand, causing him to yelp and fling his hand out. The kitten jumped and hid under the bed leaving Kain to take the blame by himself.
"KAIN NIGEL! What have you done this time?!" Bethan was fuming, her eyes on fire, muscles tense ready to spring on the vermin if nessasary.
"I...i havn't done anything, i just came in the other door since it was blocked" he stuttered trying to devert her attension elsewhere. Anywhere but the kitten. He rubbed his hand where the teethmarks had formed, all cuts seemed to be burning now the snow was gone.
"Don't you think its obvious im not on about the door....but that wreckard VERMIN you bought in!"
This triggered something off in Kain, maybe it was because he felt connected to the feline, maybe because this time he had a chance to make a stand without Tamuril watching over him. Just maybe it was time for a little bit more confidence to worm its way out of him - at least now he had something to protect of his own.
"Its, no more vermin than I am, not matter what you say! You may call me a demon but im no Vermin like you! Its cold and sick like you were!
Bethan was a little taken back but still lowered her voice to that dangerious tone, flicking her tail angerily side to side - lashing the air. "Your calling me vermin, and comparing me to that thing?! You shouldn't even be living here, you tresspasser, this was my home with Tamuril nothing to do with you, You don't belong here! And there is no-way we are connected!"
Kain lowered his own voice this time, for the first time in his teenage life. "I do belong here, you made me stay here and this is where i am going to stay. You promised her that!" he mentioned Tamurils name not out of fear or protection, but this time to gain the advantage. "Tamuril brought you into her own and set you up here because you were cold sick and alone in that forsaken forest you so love. She took care of you, not killed you off as vermin. Do you want to kill something so weak, something so like you?"
"Get out!"
"No. Admit you've lost and maybe we can settle this"
Kain's voice was stern get calm, it had returned to its normal pitch but the argument seemed to continue for hours on the same lines from this point on. Kains words managed to strike something deep in Bethans heart though she did not realise it herself Kain did and kept using it against her till she gave in and sat down in tears.
As Bethan cried a number of things happened. Firstly, Kain went back to work returning the furnatiture, secondly the power went out, hushing all the loud sounds and calming the atmosphere a little longer. Lastly a meak little kitten ran terrified out from under the bed striaght into Bethans lap.
Bethan squeaked and tried to back away but the kitten only followed mewing quietly to itself. Kain smiled in the dark knowing full well what was going on and what was going to happen.
"Just pet him..." he stated as if nothing had happened.
"But its a cat!"
"No, its a kitten just like you"
Bethan glared out him, and as if to prove she was better than him petted the kitten from a distance. "Nothing like me.....nothing at all"
The kitten purred, the only noise in the house except the occansional thud of things moving around.
"Fine! I get it, you can keep him, but this isn't over. I'll find something for you just yet...just you beleive me!"
The mouse-girl stood up stamped her foot sending the kittened running to Kain and went off to take a hot bath in the dark.
Oh not this - Sick Kitty
Stage: Teen
Kain picked the kitten up from the ground a placed it on the sofa. He moved over to the cupboard and took out some candles for Bethans return although he refused to light them with her in a bad mood.
Firstly Kain inspected the Kitten checking for anything other than cold symtons such as broken bones or flu though nothing else seemed to be effecting the kitten other than the occansional sneeze. The herald went over the fridge and poured some milk into a shallow dish listening carefully to the sound so he knew when it was full. Then he placed in on the table near the sofa and put the cat near it. "Y'know I would warm it up for you little one but the powers out and im sure Bethan using our store of hot water right now. I don't have anything to feed you with but we'll try the vet tomorrow and then get directions to a pet store so i can pick up everything you need." The kitten mewed back not understanding a single word but enjoying the affectionate tone he was protraying. He looked down at the milk carefully sniffing it, because taking a lap of it, licking it so he continued to drink letting the excess run off the edges of his whiskers.
Kain smiled happy to hear that the kitten was enjoying himself. He reached out to pet the kitten and realised two things, the reason Bethan didn't pet him for long, and possibly the reason he kept sneezing. The herald had been too distracted mentally fighting Bethan that he had forgetting how wet the kitten was. He moved swiftly over to the airing cupboard and brought out a small blue towel meant for drying off long hair. He picked the kitten up and sat it down on his waist as comfortably as he could for the kitten. Kain removed the multicoloured scarf from the feline and place it over the back of the sofa to dry. After the kitten had settled a little he brought the towel over the felines body and gentally dryed it off with a towel until it was only but a little wet. The he started to groom the kittens fur with his fingers until it was reasonably soft and striaght only to brush over softly with the towel again. "By the looks of things we are going to need to get you a towel and brush of your own" he placed the cat by the milk once more and shook out the towel over the sink trying to get off all the little cat hairs. Kain managed to get around half of them off before giving up and placing them in the dormant washing machine for later.
"We...I mean...I need to give you a name little one, because i don't think little one going to stick to you forever. Also i want to show you to Tamuril as soon as the snow clears, she'll love to see you im sure" he said thoughtfully. "Now lets see, im quite certain your a boy" he said feeling the kittens soft stomach "...but I think I should pick a unisex name just in case okay?"
The kitten mewed curiously trying to work what was going on now. Mostly he wanted to explore his new enviroment but it seems as if everytime he moved somewhere new here he was in trouble again and thought better of it. He pawed Kain as willing him for attension.
Kain sighed but smiled, rubbing the kitten under the chin till he could hear the faint purring. "Hmmm, what about Scatty as your always running around, and never where you should be...or Hunter, just to scare Bethan....No, I think Glacier is better. What about you?" The kitten just seemed to purr, mewing when he heard the names. "You don't really care do you little kitty, well i've decided now, Glacier it is" he laughed cheerfully.
Glacier mewed happily in response to Kain's joy still not really knowing what was going on. He padded nearer to the herald and nuzzled his arm for even more attension. Kain in return roughed him up a little going after his tummy, and scratching his ears as he went to run away. "I don't know but i think its going to be a lot of fun with you around!"
Kain-Nigel's had... well a more simple life up to this point. Prior to meeting Bethan, he hadn't needed to do much in the mysterious world of Gaia. But now, well... he needs to do something with his time.
What does Bethan choose for Kain-Nigel to do? Work? Go to school? Save a kitten? Does Bethan's suggestions work? Is Kain-Nigel ready for something new?
Why does Bethan choose that? What is Kain-Nigel's reactions? How do both of them cope with this "need" for change? Did something bring this about?
Kain Nigel sat bored in the middle of the room, from time to time he would pet the kitten cuddled up on his shoulder. It was rather strange how quick the kitten had managed to get used to this mixed up family. Though there was no way it would go anywhere without Kain. Often little Scat would cry as Kain left to go shopping. This always managed to make Kain guilty and Bethan plain annoyed.
It had been a couple months since Kain Nigel had moved into this little house and the inevertable happen. Bethan noticed the gradual climb in the the bills. First the dramatic one when all three of them lived to together and then the cost of growing teenager even after Tamuril had left. You see as soon as Tamuril left, any cost saved was spent on the phone or buying himself brille books. The herald was bored and lonely even with a new friend to play with.
Both human and hybrid looked at the boy.
"So what we going to do with you? Your not saving us much time and your certainly not saving us any money.....and now you got a kitten we even have to pay the vet bills, and its not like Bethan here is going near that place i have to drive you myself." Tamuril repeated.
They had gone over the same thing hour after hour with no real result.
"Fine, fine i think i get it.....your right i've only got two choices - get a job to pay for myself or leave here forever" he mumbled something about the latter not being a choice really.
He thought for a bit before saying "You know it is possible for me to move out now....its not like i would be on the streets again and I must of done enough to make up for the dept of tresspassing"
Bethan glared at him.
"Your punishment for trespassing in our home is and always will be that you must stay here and act as both maid and part of the family"
Tamuril gave her a look as if to say 'too much'.
"It dosn't matter Kain, your with us now and thats not going to change any time soon we are here for you but you have to pull your weight or cut down completely" her voice was soft and calming, trying to rensure both hybrid and herald.
"But the santum has been remade, been reborn, i have a home! I can go back!" Kain begged completely ruining Tamuril's plan.
"This is your home here though" Tamuril explained dangeriously quiet. Not the same danger you may face with Bethan but it almost hurts to be around Tamuril when shes upset. Emotions seem to go straight through her and reach out to people both in happiness as well as sadness.
"I want to be free...." he sighed
Bethan started to take over the run of convasation"Look you are free, you should be grateful as well, you see if your 'life story' is true you've been rescued from death for a better life, one with more meaning, maybe you don't beleive in fate but i wish you weren't so selfish. All you think of is how your trapped here against your will and how you spent your like fleeting between streets and santum. Don't you think we saved you too, when half you world came crashing down on you?" she paused trying to gain her breathe.
"Tamuril and I have treated you well, we have fed you and given you a roof over your head, we havn't forced you into anything you havn't wanted to do except working around the house like the rest of us. We have treated you like a son and you treat us like nothing....especially now. How many fights must we have?" she resisted the urge to spit at him. Flithy backstabbing male.
Kain was taken back by Bethans speach. It wasn't often she made them, usually she would sit aside and let someone else do the talking. Part of him guessed it was Tamuril presense doing this but it didn't seem to click in his concious mind. He started to say usual sorry line but something convinced him not to just long enough for someone else to speak.
"Please just go and get a job....I can't afford to send through this much money each month my family start to question it sooner or later" Tamuril added softly.
Bethan looked to Kain now keeping her thoughts to herself. Kain looked from one to the other. In some weird twisted way they were right. Bethan and Tamuril were his parents now, even though he didn't wish it so. All those times he had seen children with their mothers it had been rather simular just the connection was never made. It was still harsh to say though that they had saved his life as well. He didn't even get the chance to try it out in the big world, but they were older than him, maybe they knew the place better. Oh well, it really didn't matter now, he had no real choice.
"Fine...I'll go look for a job I can handle in the morning, properly something lame like stacking shelves im guessing though" he sulked.
Kain pulled the cat down from his shoulder and went off to the fridge to feed it. His only real friend here or so it seemed to the young herald. For the rest of the evening Kain ignored the household including his chores much to Bethans disgust.
Tamuril and Bethan had settled on the sofa and had started flicking through the newspaper. They had cut out several adverts relating to teenage jobs and a few he could just pass off as. All together they had found : store stacker, 'star-gazer' dome assasitant, shop assasitance, babysitting and finally dog walking.
Sadly just because Kain was being forced to walk, he had decided in advance he would never pick a job that the girls had chosen for him. Getting a job was going to be a responsiblity and if he was going to be responsible for anything at least he was going to pick what it is for himself. One of the things Kain hated was growing up, all the changes had brought him nothing but name calling, bulling and rejection. All this lead to his uncontrolled power and fear, destruction. Growing up also meant to same extent the loss of freedom, freedom that had both been forced on him and choosen by him. Kain had this freedom given and taken from him day by day, ever-changing, slowly this had built up and some sort of confidence, inside of him - a sort of rebellion against what controlled him.
Tomorrow was the day he was going to choose what he wanted to do. No-one else, just the great Kain Nigel - one of the few demonic Heralds in this world. At least tomorrow he was going to find out what he could do...though the last option available was very tempting.
