Caelen was paying more attention to Azariel than what the mare knew. He had been watching the way she acted with Faolen during the instructions and instead of feeling jealous he was feeling such a strong sense of pride in her. She was doing beautifully.
All right. Now it was time for him to take off. “Lad.. Ye’ve jest got ter count ter ten, aye?” Stepping backwards Caelen began to turn to run away. He would have to make sure that his hiding place was a good one. Letting the little one win wouldn’t really do much more than frustrate him. Most little kids were able to know when their parents were “cheating” but in a different way. “Ye’ll nae find me boyo.”
---------------------------------
Faolen flopped down eagerly onto the ground beside his momma and sighed happily when she cuddled him close. Finn had too much energy for his own good. Faolen was feeling a bit bitter. His legs wouldn’t work that great yet.
“Momma.. Am I weird because my legs don’t do what I tell them they way Finn’s do?” He had to know for sure and for certain if he ought to be up playing. His big brother wasn’t going to be permitted to beat him to anything.. Save for hatching out of their containers first. Shaking his wispy mane, Faolen waited.

Azariel took the time to nuzzle his cheek for a moment before answering. Hey, a girl could still love on her child even if there was no direct benefit from it. Besides, she got to know his scent a bit better, it'd be easier to find him. Finn on the other hand...
"Weird? Hardly," She replied softly, eyes half-lidded, "Finn's probably more like your father in both coloring and physically. He's just a bit stronger and more adapt than you at the moment, I'm sure you'll be fine in a bit." She chewed over a bit of inromation and added, "I was wobbly when I came out of my basket too, you know."
-------------------------------------------
Finn nodded once more and left his eyes open long enough to see his Da actually turning around before he shut them and squeezed them tight. He wouldn't be caught "cheating" with his Da!
"I will!" He promised, nodding determinedly even if he could no longer see anything, "I'll find ye da!" So he waited for a moment and then began to count, "One....." Boy this was annoying, having to stand still and count, couldn't he do other things while counting? Probably not. He might be "cheating" that way.
"Two..."

Caelen looked both ways before beginning to look for somewhere to run to. Faolen was busy talking to Azariel and gathering up energy and Finn was trying to remember how to count. Where did he hide that was difficult but not TOO difficult.
The idea hit Caelen as quickly as it came to him. Right around when Finn was on two or three. He had always been told that he blended into the scenery way too much well… Trotting as far away as Caelen figured he could and still having time to hide. Caelen looked around the knee-deep or a bit higher grass before carefully laying down as flat as he could. Finn would have to probably trip over him to find him.
-------------------------------------------
Faolen was busy paying attention what his mam explained. That way he’d know for sure if he ought to get up and start playing the game. It sounded fun, but he wasn’t really wanting to try it yet.
So he took after his mam more than his dah. Was that good? His mom was a girl after all and he was a boy. This made him pause to think for awhile. Hmm.. Did he want to be the weird boy that laid around. Yeah, he did. Grinning up at his mam with curiosity etched into the small features, “Okay.. So if I’m like you.. Then what else will I be instead of over-strong an’ black-colored.”
Things to remember…

Azariel snorted and nudged him, "Over-strong? Where'd you get that?" She asked, raising a single eyebrow.
"Just because you look like me doesn't mean you'll be like me unless you want to be," She pointed out, nodding once, "Be who you want to be, I'm certainly not going to stop you from doing something you want to do unless it's something particularly bad."
She shrugged her shoulders as best as one could when they're on the ground and waited for his next question.
--------------------------------
"Five...." Impatience sparked in him and he wanted to just go already. Why did counting have to be so slow? He understood well enough that it was supposed to be "fair" for the other person so they could have a reasonable time to get away, but Finn wasn't exactly the most...patient person in the first place.
"Eight..." Was he almost done? Hopefully! He wanted to prove to his Da that he wasn't someone to laugh at! He was going to find the irish-papa in five minutes! Just like he said the first time!
"Ten!"

Caelen was just as bad at Finn as waiting. The game tag wasn’t overly fun with two people although maybe it’d be better.
He waited patiently, listening as Finn made it through the numbers with very little stumbling but more than a little bit of hoof-stamping and rather impatient movement. It seemed that the poor lad had as much time not fidgetting as Caelen had as a young’un.
Taking slow deep breathes he waited. Finn would probably shoot forward as fast as his legs would carry him in order to find him.
--------------------------------
Faolen looked up at his mam again. Where had he gotten what? Well.. His mind had just kind of connected the idea and wham-bam that was what he came up with. Was that wrong? Bloody hell.. He nodded and soaked up what she was said while pondering his own words, “So.. How will I figure out who I am?” Time would tell?
Faolen leaned forward and ran his little lips along his mam’s neck and grinned at her. She made him feel safe and kind of sleepy. Which was a pretty good feeling for a mother to be able to give her little one.
Ahh.. Life was good and simple.

Azariel shrugged and chuffed at his tiny mane, thinking over what could be appropriate to say, "That's up to you, Faolen," She answered finally, smiling a bit ruefully. She sounded a bit philosophical and she was hardly that at all, "You'll learn as you get older. You can't really expect to know everything about yourself when you first come out of a basket, can you?"
She raised an eyebrow at his actions; was he going to be the same type of stallion Caelen was? It wouldn't be a bad thing if he did it would just...make her pity whoever he took a fancy to.
A sigh and a look at her dark son, "Any more questions? Or do you want to sleep for a bit?" He did look a bit sleepy, which was only natural after what they had gone through to get out of the baskets, if he wanted to sleep, he could, not that Azariel would do the same.
-------------------------------------------------------
Eyelids lifted with a speed as of yet unknown to man and he shot straight forward for a few yards until he reached a patch of trees--were they dangerous? Not if his Da were in there!--and scurried through a small opening. Where to look? Where to look? He tilted his head to the side and glanced about, wondering where he could look for his Da. There was...trees, trees, a few bushes, more trees....
Yeah, this was going to be easy. His da was green and apparently everything else in the world had decided it liked that color too. That wasn't very nice, was it? He chewed on his lower lip and trotted in a circle for a few minutes, debating.

Caelen continued to keep his breathing steady and let his eyes look up and around as best they could. The grass was indeed high, which was a benefit to hiding.. But it didn’t help him to keep a good eye on his little son. Finn seemed the sort to run off and think later.. That wouldn’t do for him at all. Blinking slightly, Caelen forced his body to react. The lad didn’t have noodles for brains after all.
His mint green eyes strained a bit and before long the stallion thought he’d go mad if he had to stay here. Forcing the curling mess of hair around him our of his eyes without much movement.. He waited.
Bah. Waiting was something he’d never been good at. Take.. Having a mate and children for example. Ha. Grinning at the idea the stallion chuckled slightly, if Finn was listening the little one ought to at least now have a small clue where to search him out.
-------------------------------------------------------
Faolen just looked at his mamma for a moment. Why on earth would he want to go to sleep? Nope, right now his body was just starting to wake up and make demands that he go out and about and probably drag her with him. “No way mam. I’d rather get up an’ wander for a few.” Would she go with him? Probably or probably not… and were there other people around here or was it just the four of them? Hm… Maybe he’d ask that too!
“Okay.. So..” His speech was a bit garbled as the black and teal colt kind of grunted and grumbled in order to get himself standing properly. Oi. His muscles certainly were taking him on a joy ride, “Who else is around here, hm?”

Azariel watched him and debated getting up so she would have an easier time chasing after him if he decided to bolt--she remembered her brothers had done such things in the past when they were colts and conviently pushed aside the memories of how she had done the same.
"Well," She began, blowing a stray strand of white hair out of her vision, "There's your grandfather--my father, who conviently decided to go take a walk before you two decided to emerge, a herdmate, Rashkae, who is rather...unique who is somewhere around here and one of my brothers, Twilight, is also around here somewhere." Though you probably will always lack an uncle and grandmother on one side, at least.
-----------------------------------------
Ears flicked forward at a sudden sound, one he couldn't quite distinguish. It sounded a bit familiar, but from a time when he hadn't really been able to think or remember things well, in that infernal wicker contraption for example.
But where had that sound come from? And was it even relevant? It could be his Da, but it might not be and he knew he was running out of time. So. He had to make a decision and follow with it. Sniffing the air instinctively, he tried to find a clue to where his Da was, trotting about the tiny clearing before the trees and the bushes and the grass. What to do, what to do....

Caelen just listened as Finn seemed to be thinking and figuring out where to look. Smart lad. After his initial taking off and running all over like a headless chicken, he seemed to be using his brain and sense to figure it out. Now did Caelen want to give another clue or no?
He could hear Azariel talking to Faolen and that made him smile. He’d keep an eye on Finn and let Faolen and Azariel bond then probably switch the kids around without her noticing. It was just taking time for her to figure out how to be a mother, but if the boys got anything from him it’d be that soon enough the three would be wrapped around her hooves. Which would probably drive him insane. Caelen sighed deeply and wasn’t even thinking about the fact that Finn probably heard that. Ooops. He’d be silent from now on.
-----------------------------------------
Faolen listened in keen interest as she spoke about his family or at least of his mamma’s herd and family. Was he in their herd or his daddy’s? Did his daddy have a herd? Oh hell… Blinking up at her, the colt continued to contemplate all of this information.
While he may look more like Azariel, and behave much more calmly than his father, Faolen was not without influence from him and he couldn’t resist nipping at his mother’s hair. So long and pretty and clean, already he loved it but couldn’t help but wonder if his would be like that too and get in the way and stuff. Hmm.. Would he mind that? “Hehe.. Gotcher hair!”

Azariel paused and looked down at the black son who was tugging at her long hair. "...I told Caelen I should cut it." She murmured, watching him for a moment before retaliating and nipping at his small bits of mane, "You do, but I've got yours too. What now?" She let go and nuzzled him for a single moment before embarrassment and a general feeling of good-lord-what-am-I-doing? made her stop for a moment.
"Good lord this life is not how I pictured it." She mumbled absently, shaking her head a bit. She was only rueful to the situation. She had never even thought of how her life was turning out; Caelen had certainly changed things since she had met him. She had yet to decide if it was all for the better, though Faolen was certainly a nice touch.
A mini-Caelen might have been a bit much though.
----------------------------------------
Thinkthinkthinkthinkthink.
A racing mind wasn't much help at the moment, but the thought of...thoughts...spinning and spinning amused him for the moment. He huffed once and finally focused on the matter at hand again. He needed to find his Da so he could prove that he was a good son already!
Da wasn't making it easy though and Finn wasn't sure whether or not he should be happy or simply frustrated because of it. Happy was good, but frustrated seemed more fun. It was hard to choose.
An exhale of breath made him pause for a moment and her glanced around curiously, sure that this meant he was at least close to his Da. Or a monster of some sort, but he didn't need to worry about that! Finn could handle anything, he was confident in that.
"Where is he?" He mumbled, sniffing about curiously, "Hmm...."

Caelen was curious to see what his mate was up to with their little son, but nothing was going to make him stand up right now and give away the game. Finn was doing just fine or at least he assumed as much since he’d not started crying or smashing things out of anger. Both of those would be clues that the game of hide-n-seek was just a bit too much at his young age. Heh, his mother would probably yell at him for riling up their son.
The grass was beginning to tickle his nose and he could feel flies buzzing around looking for a tasty treat to make out of his rump. The game would be up real quick if anybody thought he’d lay on the ground and get chewed on by the little buggers. Luckily his tail could move a bit to keep them away for awhile.
Finn was doing his best, he was positive of that.
----------------------------------------
Faolen loved his mamma.
He squealed quietly and lifted a lip at her and then gave her a pleading look even as he refused to let go of her mane. He’d just look real cute and real cuddly in order to get her to let go. Sure enough she did before long, but then she mumbled some really weird stuff.
“Am.. Am I nae good enough mamma?” The idea made him ache to get up and move away and he continued to stare at him. She probably hadn’t even meant for him to hear that, but his newborn ears were incredibly sensitive and accurate right now.
His hind legs had begun to tingle a bit from not moving enough anyways, he’d just go away and let his mamma be alone. Turning and shifting a bit Faolen looked over to see Finn looking around rather frantically. Playing didn’t sound too fun either right now..
“I’m thirsty.” Where did he get something to drink? Did his mamma have something for him?

Azariel blinked at him for a moment and raised an eyebrow, "Did I ever say that?" She asked, shaking her head, "No, I didn't. It's just a complicated thing, Faolen. I'm sad to have to say you'll probably only understand when you're older." She had hated when adults had told her that when hse was young, she couldn't expect her own son not to do the same, "But I never said you weren't good enough. You, your brother and your insane father mean the world to me, alright?" She nosed his cheek gently, "So don't ever think that again, okay?"
With a sigh and soft groan--she was still in the process of recovering from everything--she stood up and looked down at the boy, "Thirsty, are you? Why don't we go down to the stream then. That'd be a good thing for today, wouldn't it? Something to cool us down on a day that looks to be hot." She sighed and wished she had a lighter coat for the thousandth time in her life.
----------------------------------------
To be angry and frustrated was so tempting right then, he was sure he was going to be stupid and do something foolish. THe thought of his Da disapproving of it was the only thing that kept him from doing anything right then. Of course, he'd have done the same with his Ma, but she wasn't being so darn hard to find was she? No, she was with his brother at the moment.
Wiggling in place for a moment, he tilted his head in question, thinking as cleverly as he could...were that possible. His ears flicked back at forth eagerly, searching for any hint, any sound.
He heard it then. A faint swish as if something were moving just slightly to move something away. Now, where was it coming from? He cast his gaze about, thinking, thinking. The scenery was so new to him, he couldn't tell if anything was disturbed, but he could probably tell his Da's scent from anyone else's at the moment. It wasn't as if he'd encountered anyone but his immediate family recently. So, he decided to sniff his Da out.

Caelen ached to look and see what Finn was up to but because he could hear the colt that also meant that Finn would hear the movement or simply see him lift his head up. That would probably disappoint the colt, make him think that he’d gotten tired of waiting for him or something similar to that. The fly that buzzed around his rump like he was a juicy piece of steak was trying to land again and a sigh was repressed. Stupid bugs, ruining what ought to be a rather fun game of hide’n’seek. Finn was probably getting closer to finding him as his scent was stronger.
The sound of Azariel’s pretty voice was vague, so he couldn’t understand all that was being said but enough of it made his ears flick a bit in curiosity. Seemed to him that Faolen was going to be a handful to the pair of them in a much different way. Finn would have endless energy it seemed, but Faolen would probably make their brains search and stretch almost painfully. Not that Finn wouldn’t do the same.. Faolen would simply be more extreme in it. Bah! That was the joy that was children.
----------------------------------------
Faolen accepted the loving on from his mother with a bit of sadness still on him. Her words didn’t really make him feel any better and part of him wanted to just bolt away and hide from everybody til the tears that were threatening to fall had just finished him off. Of course, that wasn’t very manly and bolting wouldn’t be all that smart when he didn’t know left from right and right from left when it came to his home. No, he’d just have to suck it up.
His tail wiggled a bit hesitantly and he tried again to just accept what she was saying and to put firmly in his mind that his mamma loved him and nothing was ever going to change that.
A small smile spread across his face and he nodded tentatively, “If.. If ye don’t mind…” His own body had a strange tingle to it from where the heat was aggravating him. Even his tail wasn’t fully white, the tip was the same teal of his eyes. Faolen hadn’t really seen too too much of his dad yet and hadn’t been able to see if his dah had that green on him anywhere. Taking a bouncing step forward, with only a minor amount of wobbling, Faolen looked up at his mother expectantly, “Where’s the water at?”

Azariel looked down at him and raised an eyebrow, oddly amusing, "Why would I mind if my son asked me to do something that both of us needed? Unlike your father and brother, those of us with dark coats don't get along well in the heat." She smiled gently and shook her head, "It's this way. Watch your step though, don't want you getting hurt." She warned, taking a few steps forward in the direction of the little stream near their home.
"Ah!" She exclaimed, finally remembering something that had eluded her for a few moments, "Have I told you about the lion that lives with us yet?" She asked, shaking her head at her forgetfulness, "He's not around often, but he's harmless. Not all of them are, mind you, but Yue is." She smiled at him, "So if you see a grey and black lion with green eyes wandering toward home, that's probably him." There was so much to tell him and so much for the little foal to learn. What should she do? Tell him everything there was? Let him learn on his own? Do both? Parenthood was the last thing she had wanted, but now she was stuck with it and...well, it might not be so bad. She'd have to see, wouldn't she?
--------------------------------
Finn sniffed through the air, trying to figure out if his Da's scent was even there. There were so many new scents about, he really couldn't tell much of anything, could he? Argh! This was beyond frustrating!
Muttering something inaudible to himself, he took a few steps forward blindly out of frustration. Luckily for him, he managed to both topple over something and that something happened to be his green Da. What were the odds of that?
"Err....Hallo Da?" He squeaked, staring up at him from his upside-down position on his back. He gave a disarming and cheerful grin, hoping he hadn't hurt his Da in his tumble or that he Da wouldn't laugh or something. 'Least not at him.
