The change of subject made him tilt his head in thought, mostly because he was trying to quickly figure out what the motive behind her question was. "I've never met any," he began, "so I guess I can't say for sure. I suppose they might have a hard time with some things so I'd probably help them out if I could."

He tried to imagine being deaf, blind, or mute. He couldn't very well. "It must be really sad... Well, if the taur's born like that then maybe he wouldn't know any better, and so there'd be no reason for him to be sad. Unless nobody helps him and he has a real hard time. Ugh, and some people actually are cruel like that. It's not like it's the taur's fault."

Slowly Fisk blinked as an idea began to take shape. Was Vena saying...? But she didn't seem disabled to him. He said gently, "Why do you ask?"

Vena looekd to the ground at his last question. She scrapped ehr front paw against the ground, "When I was a young child, I grew ill, noone knew why, but my perfectionist father didn't like that, but once I seemed to heal it was all good, until my mother discovered that," she paused there, had he guessed already? "I'm deaf." She looked at him.

"The reason I can speak is I was taught to before my illness, and I learned how to lip-read as people call it." She admitted that and looked at him, a somewhat scared look appear in her eyes. Right now, all hell could break loose. At least on her side of this.

"That's... wow..." he breathed. Again, not so good with the words. He was sad for her, because she'd lost something and knew what it was like before, and he was touched that she'd trusted him enough to tell him when it obviously made her scared to do so. Above all, he admired her.

Smiling encouragingly he gave her shoulder a little tap with his fist, like a toned-down version of a friendly punch he'd give a guy. "Hey, don't worry. Whatever your old pack thought, I think it's really amazing how well you can talk and lip-read. And who are you going to believe, them or me?" He pointed at himself and mouthed 'me' with enthusiastic nodding, feeling strangely aware that she could probably not tell the difference between when he was mouthing the words and when he was saying them. That realization made a thorn of sadness p***k in his chest, and he clenched his teeth and maintained his smile to conceal it.

Vena smiled at him, "you." He was right, she couldn't tell the difference between actual words or mouthing. "Though makes telling me secrets easier. You don't have to say them allowed." She then noticed his smile, she figure he felt guilty or something, "If you feel guilty or sad, please it's ok. I've learned ot live with it. And it's made me slightly stronger inside." She placed her hand on his shoulder to show him she meant well. "All I ask is the same as I ask of my Cattaur, Cervitaur, and Centaur friends, is that you make sure I'm looking when you talk." She smiled at him, hoping he'd be ok with the fact he was having a conversation with deaf taur.

"If you odn't mind me asking, what do the birds here sound like?" She asked randomly, hoping to know the sound again. She remembered the birds from the wolftaur isle, but none here. And she hoped this question wasn't too awkward, for him to answer.

Squinting as he digested this, Fisk nodded slowly. He looked at her hand and then met her eyes. "I will, no problem." It probably wouldn't take much time to adjust. After all, she wasn't asking a lot.

It was a little more difficult to figure out how to describe the birds' sounds, but he did his best. "Well right now they sound... hmm... happy, really. Carefree and all. I think they sound pretty similar to the ones on the other isle. I didn't really think about it. I guess you kind of take them for granted, if you hear them every day." His ears were lifted as he paid close attention to the birds for the first time in a long time. "Usually I ignore them, as background noise when I'm trying to listen while hunting. Woah... they're... everywhere. There's so many."

His eyebrows were high with amazement when he looked at her again. She had already opened his eyes -- or maybe his ears? -- a little bit more than they had been before, and after only knowing him for a short time. He couldn't help but be intrigued.

Vena smiled. "As I thought they did. " She let him hold her hand. He was nice, he wouldn't harm him, nor anything else, except for food, but she did the same, so it was ok.

"Lots of birds, I see them everyday. Their colors so beautiful." She smiled wider and looked around. "If you just listen there's a lot more the things then there seems." She giggled. Especially since she was giving him a lecture on hearing when she was the deaf one. "And now the deaf one is giving one lectures about hearing." Her giggle turned more into a nice laugh. For one who couldn't hear her own voice, she had a gentle laugh and voice. Each time she spoke with Fisk her voice sounded more confident.

((Wow, I tried ot spell 'Fisk' and spelt "Fish". LOL! rofl ))

"You know what they say," he laughed, "Don't know what you've got 'til it's gone. Or, I guess, 'til someone who lost it already tells you--" Suddenly there was a rustling in the undergrowth, somewhere behind Vena, and Fisk looked up at it. He smiled and gestured for her to turn around, mouthing, 'slowly.' Taking advantage of her secrets idea already. He held very still, one hand pointing at a light gray-brown rabbit that hopped anxiously into the open, froze, and stared at them for a long minute before scampering away again. Fisk grinned, thinking it was cool to watch an animal without holding a spear in his hand.

Seeing the word Vena gave a slight nod and turned really slowly. Then in her blue vision, she saw the rabbit and smiled. Once it left she turned her face back to Fisk with a genuine smile on it. "Thanks." She spoke gently. She didn't believe she'd ever met such a nice taur of her own race. Sure she met nice taurs, but most of them were female, and were of very different races. She wondered how he thought of her.

Her eyes caught a speck of movement and her head turned ot see it. There was a small red bird, in a nest, which some chicks. She padded up to Fisk and used her other hand to press on his shoulder to turn him around to see the bird's nest. The birds sang their songs, of course Vena could see that but she couldn't hear it.

Then a second later she looked at Fisk, "Isn't nature beauitful adn wonderful?"

It was new for him to make a friend this quickly, but it seemed natural since they were the only wolftaurs he knew of on this isle. Having something like that in common helped. He turned where she directed him and watched the birds. "Yes, yes it is," he answered with an absent smile, eyes roaming. Nature was usually his target; it was his prey. It was not often that he stopped to really look at it for what it was. And it was beautiful.

For the first time in his memory he was reluctant to realize that he had to get back to hunting. Today he was not just practicing, he was looking for what he'd be eating that evening. He chewed on his lip, musing. Well, Vena had said she was a good hunter too, didn't she? He tugged his spear out of the ground and turned it to brush the dirt from the tip. "Hey Vena," he said, remembering to turn and look at her, "I have to get back to hunting. But if you want, you're welcome to join me. You can even join me for dinner afterward. If you're interested." He blew a fleck of dirt from his spear and peered at it critically. "I'm told I'm a real good cook."

Vena smiled at Fisk, "Hunting sounds good." She had no weapon so she could use anything she could find around her. Then she picked up his spear and handed it to him, "You might need this."

Memories spiked when he mentioned being a good cook, "Well, anyone can cook better hten me." She giggled. She never realized how fast she had turned Fisk into a friend. Normally she'd still be trying to make a conversation with them. But him being the second Wolftaur she'd ever seen on this isle helped a heck of a lot. "Which way?" She asked, waving ehr arm to show him the forest, not that he didn't see it, or at least she prayed that he did.

Fortunately he did indeed see the forest. He rested his spear on his shoulder and looked around at it. "Hmm, guess I'll go the same way I was going before." Upon realizing that he wasn't facing her when he said that, he quickly turned. "Oh sorry! That way." He pointed. "Race you to that split log!" Friendly he certainly was, but he was also intensely competitive. With a bound he was off.

Vena felt the competitive blood inside her flare when he challeneged her, she managed to nod her head before he took off, then she bounded after him, running as fast as her wolven legs could carry her.

Dodging trees that were between her and the split log the orange wolftaur bounded continuously to avoid them. She chased after the green wolftaur. Running at full speed the smaller female wolftaur started to gain on him. She was now jsut to his left and a step behind him.

She'd gained on him rapidly enough that he found himself scrambling to pick up the pace. Wow, he thought, grinning a little crazily with the surge of adrenaline, she's fast! Of course smaller taurs tended to be the faster ones, and he was not small. When he fell behind he found the situation more amusing than anything -- he'd challenged her, after all, and now he had to deal with the consequences. She swept past him and reached the log first. He thundered to a halt, feeling something like a huge, awkward, unstoppable rolling boulder next to her.

"Well done!" he said. He was light-headed. Not from the physical exertion, of course. He wasn't sure what it was from. "Very well done."
PostPosted: Sat Jun 23, 2007 7:05 pm

Vena came to a almost graceful stop. Then she turned and a second later Fisk had joined her there. Her breath was slightly force for the run, but not too much. "You as well." Though she couldn't help but smile becuase she won, "I'm always been one who loved to run." She said. Her tail running for excess adrenaline escaping from the movement. It also showed the excietment she had. "That was fun, haven't had a good race with anyone in a long time." She smiled. Running was a favorite thing ofhers to do.

Once her breathing was back to normal she nodded to him. "Shall you show me how you hunt with the spear?" She asked. She'd never hunted with anything other then her own paws, and rocks. How she managed to hit the targets with rocks, she had no clue, other then extremely good aim she guessed, and luck.

Feeling quite pleased with himself and not at all sore about losing, Fisk hefted his spear. "Sure I can. Or, I'll do my best anyway. I've never taught anyone before." He tried to remember back to when he'd first begun to use a spear. How did he learn? As a child he'd been annoyingly independent and had taken to going off on his own to experiment with a makeshift spear until he figured out how it worked. It would have been easier to ask someone to teach him, but he had been too proud to do that.

"Well, let's see. If you have good aim you can throw it, but if you do that you've lost your weapon so you'd better hope you didn't miss. You can also use it up close and stab with it, which is more dangerous because... well... you're close, but at least you can hold onto the spear." He paused, frowning at himself a little. "Sorry if you didn't catch all that. It's not really important. Here... why don't I show you how I do it first." He twirled his spear in his hand, stopping it when it was vertical with the head pointing straight up and thumping it down on the ground. His smile was confident and maybe a big smug. "Let's do some tracking."
