"My rabbit! Angel, you mean, her name is Angel," Estrelas told him, petting the rabbit fondly. "What do you mean?" she asked innocently. "My Angel would never bite!" Estrelas smiled happily and cuddled the rabbit. "What does this do with your family, Mista Asmodai? Are they all perhaps all rabbits too?" she asked, totally serious.

"No," he said. "They're most certainly not rabbits, I... just... don't know where they are." Asmadai shrugged half-heartedly. The priest didn't bother to mention that Angel had just bit Estrelas, figuring that the woman was a little unstable anyway. He didn't want to push her over the edge that Maria had gone over, after all.

"Ah. Well, that is a piety because God gave you to your family," Estrelas said. "Ah am sorrow to hear that. Family is God's good gift to all persons under the age of thirty," she explained seriously. "I sent my family a Booming Box and a Tape Record so that they could hear me speak. I also sent them an Outlet so they can plug it in."

Angel seemed to roll her eyes to acknowledge the fact that it's not the outlet that generates electricity, it was the electric lines nonexistent in 15th century Portugal that did.

"I have a younger sister you see, how many brothers and sisters do you have?" she asked brightly. "Her name is Estica and she is the most annoying runt in the world but we are sisters," she laughed.

He flinched. "I have four siblings, three brothers and a sister. I am the oldest; Maria was just behind me." The 'was' seemed to cause him pain, and Asmadai shifted uncomfortably. "Family is indeed one of God's many gifts. Circumstances.... make me unable to speak to any of them."

Smooth move, Estrelas, Angel thought and twitched her ears in annoyance.

"Was?" Estrelas furrowed her brows. "You mean... When all of time went crazy your younger sister became your older sister!" she exclaimed, proud of her sensitive intuition skills. "That is a pity indeed, for you cannot boss her around anymore." She nodded sympathetically. "I am also sorry that you cannot speak to them. It is probably very hard to get a Tape Recording or a Phellytone to whereever they are."

"...No, that's not what I mean," he said, although the rest was certainly true. "My little sister, Maria, is..." Asmadai cut himself off. "What about your family? Where are you from?"

At his question, Estrelas puffed herself up proudly. "Ah am from Portugal, you see, I am Portuguese," she explained happily. "And I have a Avo, a mama, a papa, and a little sister." With a conspiritorial nod, Estrelas lowered her voice. "And the boy from two fields over crushes me.... Every harvest festival he dote on me. But of course Ah am a good Catholic woman and I refuse his advances."

Angel glared in annoyance again.

"Oh yes. And Angel has too many brothers and sisters to be named," Estrelas added aloofly. "Mister Asmodai-who-I-still-believe-is-not-a-priest-for-you-are-too-young-and-good-looking, what about your pet? I suppose you do have a pet. Everyone has one."

Asmadai nodded. It wasn't like he could bring his documentation from the seminary and prove it to her; he doubted, if she was from early colonial Portugal, that she could read. "I do not have a pet," he informed her. "I do not desire one, for I spend- spent, I suppose- much of my time in prayer."

Estrelas puffed out. "I do pray!" she said hurridly. "But I pray at night... Umm...." There was a long pause as she thought quickly. "Because that is when I can connect to the Lord with all the hard work I've done over the day," she finished.

Now at LOTUS, she wasn't allowed to turn up the entire gardens and plant her crops.. Not that they would grow in the climate here anyways. A very angry man had once chased her out of the power room, saying that digging up the circuitboard because of the heat it provided was rarely a good idea. But it was hard work nevertheless! At least the tomatos and radishes grew.

"You spent? Is that a past-tense meaning that you no longer do so?" she asked curiously.

"I would like to, but much of my time has been occupied." With running away- he hated to admit it, but it had been running away- from the risen dead, building another church, then coming here, he had hardly had time to think, let alone pray. "Prayer at night is a very wise idea, for that is when you are most honest with yourself and with God."

A bright smiled stretched across Estrelas's face. "HAH! Angel, Ah TOLD you so-" she began, but stopped, her face turning red. Mista Sain had implied it hard enough that talking to Angel, no matter what she said back, was not a good idea in front of other people. "Ah-hem! Yes, yes, it is," she agreed meekly. "Ah apolongate," she 'apologized,' then thought it better to have an explanation. "Rabbits have no God, you see, and so you surely cannot expect Angel to agree with you all the time!" she laughed nervously. "She claims..." Her voice lowered suspiciously. "Angel often seems to want me to turn off the light quick. Eleck-tri-city, you see, Mister Asmodai," she quickly added. "Eleck-tri-city is a thing of Science and of God, and it goes everywhere and makes light and makes heat and keeps food cold and also makes smoothies," she said, referring to various household appliances. "It can kill you by making you fall and twitch, like this!"

With a dramatic shudder, Estrelas theatarically fell down and move her arms and legs as if to make a snow angel "See? That is why you must never chew the black ropes coming out of Eleck-trick things."

Why anyone would chew on the electrical wires completely bypassed the poor priest. Instead, he nodded and agreed every few words, stopping when she did. "That is a wise lesson and I'll keep it in mind," he said slowly, chewing on a thumbnail as he did so. Even priests could be confused by insane women with strange accents (because even though nuns came from all over to the Vatican, he didn't think that there were really any with this sort of accent) sometimes.

"Do forgive me, but it is very indecorous to be laying on the ground like that, don't you think?"

Angel snorted at Estrelas and glared as Asmadai, but the rabbit luckily made no move to savage the priest again. She continued to nibble grass, wiggling her ears and occasionally looking up to watch out for any "predators" that might try to pick her up like that again.

Estrelas, however, stared at the priest. She looked like a woman from the 1400's confronted with the idea the earth wasn't flat.

"...In what?" she asked. "Do not mock me! Ah'm not in anything!" she cried, her little grasp of English to extending to large words like "indecorous" or "WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING STOP THAT RIGHT NOW."

"I'm not!" Asmadai hurried to make amends. "Indecorous means... not proper. Anyone could walk about and see you like that and then what? It certainly would not bode well at all for your reputation." Which surely is in ruins simply because of how she acts, he thought, then felt bad. "Let me help you up," he said, standing and offering Estrelas a hand.

Estrelas pouted, but nodded reluctantly, like a sulking child.

But she beamed as brightly as 348940 suns when he offered her a hand.

"THANK YOU MISTA PRIEST!" she hollered, startling Angel into streaking a few yards away. With that she grabbed his hand in her own dirty, calloused one and yanked down- hard, using the momentum to topple herself up again.
