[Celeste Verselles]
High in the mountains, up in the colder reaches where the great birds nested, there was a lesson in progress, one the elders had bade Iris to teach. So the older Harpy settled in to a sheltered nest, a ledge protecting her small class from the biting chill of the fall winds that were starting to blow.

The Harpy settled in impatiently, tucking brilliant feathers in here and there, and preening just a little as she waited for the hatchlings to settle in. They would calm down soon enough, and she had all day. Might as well let them get their fidgets out.

"Koda, if you would?" She gestured to the small class once she'd had enough of their chatter, indicating for the teenager to calm them down. The younger harpy had volunteered herself to help teach, and so Iris had enlisted her as a sort of assistant to help keep the children in line.

In the chattery class there was a small harpy girl. Her eyes were bright teal that stared blankly as the girl was out of her mind. She was daydreaming, wishing the world was a better place. She then shook her head and looked at the colorful harpy who was to teach them. Her mind was racing, she couldn't wait to know what she knew. On her face there was a small smile as she waited for the class to begin.

Koda rose from her comfortable spot on the floor, moving her wing as she did to reveal the large sack underneath. She spoke with confidence unusual for a young girl in the presence of Iris, "Today you'll be practicing crafting. Not everyone finds the arts interesting but their knowledge is necessary if you want to attract a male later."

She motioned back to Iris. The older female had been chosen because of her experience in that category. Iris' plumage made it impossible for her to be an effective hunter, Koda was assuming that she spent a lot of her time crafting instead.

Koda was only here, however because her mother had volunteered her for the job. The matriarch was always pushing jobs on Koda and parroting the same old line about responsibility. But, now she was stuck. At least Iris was nice to look at.

[Celeste Verselles]

Iris gathered up her supplies for the basket weaving, then raised her voice above the students, clearing her throat. "Achem," she coughed, smiling at the children. "Gather up the supplies infront of you, and let's begin. Today I'm going to teach you a very basic weave that we use to make baskets for gathering and hunting." One brightly colored wingtip reached out and scooped up a simple, dried grass basket from nearby. "When you're done, it will look something like this. Are you ready to begin?"

Tawariell
Kalpana carefully reached out and picked up the supplies that were laid infront of her. She looked at the finished product and decided she'd try and make hers just as good, or even better. She knew at first it would be hard, but you have to learn before you can do right?

She nodded at the colorful harpy and gave the teenaged harpy a nod. She hoped she wouldn't be really bad at this.

Koda had been hopping from fledgling to fledgling handing out small pre-made bundles of crafting materials. She saved one for herself and then hoped back over to where she had been relaxing earlier. "Some of the girls who have done this before may want to try a fancier weave or a new decoration. If this is your first time, however I suggest you stick with the basics, and follow Miss. Iris' instructions closely."

Being the favored daughter of the current Matriarch, and next in line for the position Koda was almost guaranteed nice male when she was of age. Things like weaving and sewing had never been a concern. Now that she was stuck here, however, she figured it was about time she try her hand at it.

[Celeste Verselles]

Iris took up her own supplies, then carefully began to explain the process of setting up the ribs and weaving the strands of sea grass. "First you take your strand, and weave it infront of the rib, and then you weave it behind the next, like so." Practiced feathered hands demonstrated the technique slowly, holding up the basket so that everyone could see. "You can come closer if you want a better look, but one at a time."

Koda leaned over trying to get a better look.

Kalpana took her kit and started to take it apart. She took the pieces that were identicle to the ones that Iris held up. Her teal colored eyes kept moving quickly as she weaved trying to make hers prefect. She copied the same hand movements that Iris made, only slower and less confident.

From her place in the middle-front of the class she could see the teacher fairly well so she didn't go up like some of the other students were. She worked hard on keeping her feathers steady as she kept her slow waeving going, though she was careful not to get ahead of Iris, just incase she messed up or got lost.

Once she was fairly sure she understood how it worked she stood and hoped around the class checking the work of the younger girls. Fairly confidant in their ability she settled down again and started her first attempt at a basket.

[Celeste Verselles]

Once she had finished with her first row of weave around the basket, Iris rose from her seat, moving amidst the rows of her younger students to make sure that everything was done properly. She wanted to make sure all of the girls were picking up on it before she moved on.

Koda wasn't sure how, but she'd already botched her basket.

Tawariell

Kalpana finished her first row, it was ok. She had worked it well for her first try, though it was lose and not extremely tidy, but overall, for a first time it probably wasn't that bad.

Sighing, Koda slowly began to pull apart the weave of her basket. Some of the other girls had brought scraps of cloth and small baubles that they where incorporating into the weave. Glancing at their baskets she felt a bit of envy.

[Celeste Verselles]
"This is why your mother sent you to my class," Iris remarked as she came over to Koda, settling in next to the teenage avian and gently taking the basket from her hands. "A matriarch needs to know the crafts of her people if she is to understand their needs. For you to understand your crafters, you have to know what their work is like." Pulling out the faulty weave, she held it out so the other girl could see. "Do it like this." Careful feathers showed the matriarch's daughter the proper fashion for the weaving. "And if you want to make it more decorative, try this." Plucking one of her feathers out, she stuck it in between the strands of the weave, a colorful accent for the plain grass weave.

Tawariell
Kalpana watched the teacher and matriaich's daughter/ She was glad to not be in her position, though she was also sad that she wasn't as improtant. She then kept up with her weaving. After a few rows she noticed something, each row was starting to get tighter and tigher as she started getting better. A smile crept across her face as she tried something. She took one of her darker feathers and one of her lighter ones, twisting them together at the ends to they stayed together in a 'V'. Then she took the feathers and stuck the bottom of the 'V' at the bottom of the basket and weaved them up in a 'V'. It looked better with the feathers in it. Her smile grew wider.

If it wasn't for the downy feathers on her cheeks the whole class would have seen Koda blush. "I do not need to learn every technique to understand how to regulate supplies and resources," she didn't make eye contact, instead choosing to examine the now perfect weave she held in her hands. "Thank you though, I think I understand this a bit better now." She began weaving again, her unpracticed fingers pulling too tight in one area and leaving it too loose in another.

"Perhaps, if any of the girls are finished you should collect their baskets?" She gestured to a light brown child, "It looks like she's doing well, why don't you go hover over her instead of pestering me?"

[Celeste Verselles]
"You are older Koda, so I let you help me, but for today, you're still my student. That makes it my job to "pester" you, so that you learn how to do this correctly. And keep in mind that this is my class, not your's, and that your mother put you in my charge for the day." She kept her scolding quiet, and took hold of Koda's feathers with her own, moving the other's fingers properly to fix the weave. "I will teach as I deem fit." Still, once she was satisfied that Koda was doing things properly, she moved over to Kalpana, inspecting the child's weave.

"Very good Kalpana," she praised, eyeing the feathers. "And a very nice personal touch, using your own feathers in the weave. Have you done this before?"

one over three
Koda refrained from pointing out that a peacock like Iris would have no idea why the matriarch would send her daughter to help out in a fledgling's weaving class. She refrained from pointing out the other benefits and lessons that could be learned while sitting in. Most of all she refrained from commenting that Iris had to be so good at these things because otherwise no male would look at her. She took a deep breath. At least the older woman was nice to look at.

Tawariell

Kalpana looked up at Iris as she complimented her. She smiled at hte feathers then back up at her teacher. "Thanks." She spoke quietly, then replying to the next question she shrugged, "Not really miss. I wanted to try something." She spoke honestly. Her gaze went to Koda. She thought that the teen was a nice harpy, but how would she know? She barely ended up talking to maybe others, nevermind the matriarch's daughter.

She then turned back to her weaving and finished the basket. The last weave was hard for it kept escaping on ehr and she kept pulling it too hard or not hard enough making it more messed hten the rest of the basket put together.

one over three
Koda wove as quickly as she could without destroying her basket. As soon as she was done she placed it on the ground and without sparing it a second glance settled down to speak with one of the children. She was one of the older children, confidant enough to be incorporating some colorful beads into the design but not yet practiced enough to completely avoid errors. Even while Koda was speaking, the child backtracked and redid a few of the steps.

After listening for a while Koda patted the girl on her head and moved towards the next child.
