I think gothic lolita is a great starting point, beacause there are lots of places to find things that would be gothic lolita with a nice petticoat or pannier, but sweet loli is my perferred style.

Gothic Lolita is a lot more convienent for beginners, i remember starting out and not being able to find much locally or affordable that wasn't black or gothic. Sweet Loli and Himeloli is a little less known although they have been a favorite of mine, my favorite is still Aristocrat, ruffs and long trailing gowns are just my kind of flamboyance.

I like gothic lolita and could probably pull it off, but its not my favorite. I'm picky about it because it can be a bit dull. Like I said, I do like it. It can be adorable or gorgeous, I'm just picky about it. I prefer sweet, classic, and the sailor stuff is cute too.

I only wear Aristocrat and Kuro Lolita. I really don't like sweet all that much anymore. I prefere the more mature aspect of Aristocrat. Plus I love corsets and never feel more elegant than when I'm wearing my full length skirts. I think that's probably why I don't like most brand clothes, because they're mostly sweet.
I come from a gothic background though. So I suppose that explains my taste.
