Basically in a census if enough people put the same thing for religion it becomes an official religion. So lots of people including me put their religion as jedi xd

Hahah that is kickass I can't believe they actually put it down on the test though, unless it was in the "other" category?

Ok well my view on martial art philosphy (now I actually have some time to write about it) is as follows...

Philosophically, MA's are founded on the defensive spirit and its code forbids unfair assaults of use of force.
It fosters humility, discipline, a generous attitude and camaraderie. Through training we can achieve harmony of mind and body, mental and physical discipline, self-control, self-confidence, reduction of stress - which I need!! and the ability to defend one-self and my../your loved ones, Because of the increased power we as martial artists develop in the study, and our newly gained knowledge of techniques which can be extremely amazing to an opponent!
it is important that this ability is used only constructively and never offensively..I don't know if that actually answers ur question....bbut this is what I think gonk

also I reckon part of Martial art philosophy is remebering annd expressing gratitude to the people who have carried their traditions foward through centuries. so that we can study MA's today in the way that we do.

Martial art philosophys are there to remind us to Always keep in mind that your responsibility as a martial artist are there to help the development of yourself physically, mentally and spiritually....it fits into every aspect of MA's

Good description of your Martial Arts philosophy, but I don't think that goes for the Martial Arts as a whole. Some arts were created for the mere destruction of others, and some for sport, while others my have specific reasons.

No problem. I'm just looking to see wahat some others really think abou the subject.... maaning the reason it exists, and/or why someone would go through the trouble to create them.

Any more in-depth responses? No asnwer will more or less be the correct one, but just some food for thought.

I hadn't replied to this thread mainly because everyone else has already said what I would have said. But I guess I might as well just add my two cents:

I think that martial philosophy is just justification for their actions, during the warring eras. It was believed long ago that samurai were superior because they "lived a higher ideal," and a large part of that is their beliefs. The philosophies gave their life purpose: their actions circled around that, rather than simply acting as mindless mercenaries.

Interesting... well let me expand upon this even further.

Why then do Martial Art's Philosophies continue to be created, even in present day? Many MMA style are now intertwining philosophies into their regimens, or borrow from styles that have been mixed.

What do some of you feel the reason for this is?

In many ways it's become the emperors new clothes.

Martial Arts instructors with no real skill or teaching ability will hide behind philosophy to disguise their bullshit.

This is very true. But then again, we also have the Martial Greats whom also utilize philosophies in their arts. Speaking outside of sport, of course.

Well, an intructor that doesnt nessecarily hide behind his philosophies can help you alot, even without outstanding skills in martial arts.

Yeah I'd agree with that. Up to a certain point, an instructor that is fundamentally sound but not outstanding can do a lot for people. But only up to a certain point, after that where do you go?
