In the real world there aren't people smart enough to figure it out. Especially here in America where people don't believe in Shinigami...

If I found a Death Note and used it I would most likely become really paranoid. Like think to my self, "Omg! He knows who I really am!!" -kills- "Omg! She knows who I really am!! OoO" -kills-. I would end up killing the whole world because I would be paranoid all the time. <.< >.>

I'd kill people at my school and then get suspected and threaten to kill the president.

I am a curious person...I know if I ever got my hands on one, I would most likely kill atleast one criminal, though after that, I'd destroy it. I doubt I'd be able to handle killing people all the time. To me, it would appear to be...I don't know. The sort of thing that seems like a really good idea to begin with, but later on, you realize that it's not the way you once though it was. Then I'd bury it, so I could never get caught for using it, but I have access if I ever needed it again.
But that's one of two things. The other is highly unlikely, but it works this way: If a man kills a man, he feels incredibly guilty and is full of regret. However, if a man kills more people after that, he eventually becomes desensitized to the death. Using that knowledge, I'd kill people all the time just to become desensitized. That way, I could kill without an ounce of remorse.
The thing is, even though Light is a genius and got caught, it's a book. it was supposed to happen that way! Plus, he acted with his ideals as the top priority, not self preservation, though this is subtle. After all, he discloses too much information about himself.
I wouldn't give it back to the shinigami. I like having things like that around, just incase. That's why I keep knives and stuff everywhere ninja

If I were to get a hold of the notebook, my curiosity would make me try using it at least once. But after knowing that the notebook were real, and that the person whose name I wrote down was killed by the notebook, I'd freak out. Really badly.
If, however, I were to have prior knowledge of the Death Note series, I would probably kill criminals the way Light does it just for the sake of making this genius fiction come true for fans. *winkwink*
Hahah, just kidding. I wouldn't be able to handle the psychological burden. Though I wouldn't give the notebook back to the Shinigami, because if the Shinigami gave me the book because, like Ryuk, he was bored, and if I gave him back the notebook, he'd most possibly drop it again or give it to another person, and if the person turned out to be the wrong person, it could be fatal. So I'd either hide the notebook or destroy it.

I don't think I'd kill criminals...I mean, they're already in jail, and it's silly to think that the world is just going to become perfect once you kill all the criminals. And who's to say that if you used it, everyone would suspect something like "Kira"? Most people would probably assume that god is making the world a better place, and that it doesn't equate to a person on earth...But yeah. I dunno what I'd do with it. I'd use it, probably, but not in the same way as Light did, I don't think.
And I'm surprised in the beginning that L didn't think that Kira was a completely omnipotent being...But, hey, that's L for you.

I would use the Death Note for personal gain at first (Not too major though, it'd be suspicious) but I would eventually get tired of a life like that and make it a perfect world instead. The thing is, I might have killed Lind L. Tailor, but not the FBI agents. I wouldn't be smart enough for that. So L would never get the Raye Penber clue, which would leave me unsuspected for a pretty long time. If I ever did become a suspect, I would trade for the eyes just in case.

The entire 'killing loads of criminals' thing, in DN, showed a dramatic decreas of criminal activity. If you think you're going to die by some mysterious force, you're probably not going to commit a crime.
As for the god thing, who's to say that people didn't think their God was killing off all the bad folks? DN focused largely on Japan, we rarely heard of other countries besides the US. Kira was thought of by some person on the Internet(and I bet s/he is very proud of his/her work. xd ).
I was under the impression that L did think Kira was an omnipotent being. I think the entire Lind L. Taylor press conferance was to prove Kira was human. L's a sneeky insomniac, after all.

well my friends and i had a similiar conversation about something like this. Ok here is the situation, lets say someone broke into your house, and you are currently home alone. His/her intention is to kill u and then rob you. You happen to know where the gun and bullets are, and you load it. With the gun in hand you confront the burguler and ask him to leave, but he refuses, and steps toward you gun drawn. what would you do? A. never would have confronted him/her in the first place B.Shoot him in the brains C. Cower in fright D. combination E. Other.
I chose E. Me well i probably would have shot him on accident and then broken down and cried, and felt bad for the man/woman
but if i found the deathnote and new its purposes i don't kno wat i would have done... but if i didn't kno i most likely would have picked it up and thought it was cool looking, showed it to some of my friends and then drew in it or wrote notes in it.

If I had one I'd probably destroy it before I used it, because I know that if I kept it I'd eventually use it. (I'm a rational, sensitive person most of the time, but when I get mad I get impossible to reason with.)

If I found a death note I would use it... But I wouldn't just kill anyone (eaven though it would be tempting) :/ I would be scared to death by it's power and I don't know where to keep it but I'd find a place...
But I would probably freak out when I opend the book and saw the names of the people(s) I killed... I would probably feel terrible, but I wouldn't do like raito and watch them die.
And I'd make friends whit the shinigami (well it's not good if you hated each other) .
And If I were about to get crazy I would destroy it...
