I always try to stay low when I fight. This leaves less of a target, as I can cover more of my body. If you are sparring for points, try and test what the judge is looking for. If you get a solid kick in but the judge doesn't call it, switch to punches. Don't just go out with a flurry of punches and kicks, you want to have good, solid technique.

Wouldn't staying low make it easier to kick you in the face? People could like pound you into the ground without making you fall over first.

It blocks kicks. I would never go low in a real fight...in fact, I would never fight like I spar. I spar for points, not to hurt my opponent.

I fail to see how low blocks stop kicks to the head/face unless you're somehow close enough to stop them while they're chambering. But by staying low and grounded your mobility is compromised. Personally I'd want to clinch your neck and knee your face in but since you're a "point fighter" (semi contact, tag, generic karate style point fighting I'm guessing?) I'd just knock your head off with an axe kick. *shrugs*

Don't leave yourself open. Take advantage of ground. Do not show fear. Do not show pain. Never stay in one place.

And your "axe kick" can easily be stopped with a modified upper block or a quick shuffle to the right or left. That axe kick leaves you open for far too long. All I would have to do is push your leg off to the side and you would be open. And there are no grabs or head contact allowed at my dojo. If there was, I would spar a bit differently. And at my dojo, everyone is supposed to be a point fighter.

Your sparring rules are trash though IMO. What style do you do anyway? Also note: Blocking an axe kick is really pretty much out of the question. Generic/oldskool axe kicks maybe but definitely not WTF TKD axe kicks. Sidestepping works assuming you can time it correctly and are fast enough to step out of the way, also assuming the guy throwing the axe didn't set the kick up (which any decent fighter will do) like some retard. Then again, I wasn't challenging the idea of sidestepping a head kick now was I?

And I do Shorin Ryu Karate, but when I spar, I do more freestyle.

Plenty of martial art schools and styles (even within Karate) do full contact sparring and have ways to work around the so called "dangers" of full contact. Tag sparring is trash.
