..//The Discovery//..

Ambling around the dark room Kris stood near the shaded window and pulled at the loose string to unravel the blinds, shedding some early morning sunlight into the unforgiving darkness that captured her bedroom. It was darn near nine in the morning already, Aoshi wasn’t anywhere near awake and even herself hadn’t managed to get up until just a few minutes before. The young woman shook her head flipping it a few times in order to get her frizzy mess of hair to settle. Once that was done she moved on to getting a well needed shower, on a cool autumn day such as the one they were having today she fully planned to indulge upon her partner’s lack of motivation. After all, the early bird catches the worm, or in this case the earliest riser gets the hottest and longest shower. Her hair touched just below her shoulders as the young woman’s slender body shed the night clothes and hopped into the heated shower, steam rose to the ceiling as she began humming and closed her eyes as shampoo slid down her cheeks.

“…What you feel is what you are and what you are is beautiful…”

Kris laughed as the song floated from within her lips. It was just the night before that the two of them, Aoshi and her had had a rather harsh argument and she had climbed onto their bed and popped her Ipod earphones in, rocking out to many such bands. None the less last night hadn’t been the best of bests since they had arrived in this rural area, it hit home every once and a while that Kris really wasn’t in her ‘natural environment’, but humans were supposed to be adaptable right? Right, she could do this. She had always wanted to get away from the city life or more importantly the gang life. However it had just now become a reality and reality was setting in fast that for the bulk of her life she’d always had something to do, someone to inform or hurt and now, there was nothing. On the positive spin, there was no more need for her to look behind her awaiting the next bullet in her side or slash to the ankles, and yet, the violence is what she thrived on.

Pulling a towel around her Kris stood for a moment, staring into the foggy glass mirror above their grayish white sink. There wasn’t anything she could see, but the staring was more of a time to which she could wander back inside her own mind to find some cause to have a adventure today. It was that sort of day; something she was wanting was some sort of moment, something that made time stop even if just for a split second.

“Yeah, like that’ll happen around here…”

She muttered softly in an undertone as she exited the bathroom to find some clothes. Her wardrobe consisted of mostly cheap jeans, t-shirts and tanks and a few pairs of shorts and hoodies, nothing fancy or new. Fiddling with the hangers they had for their jackets Kris pulled off a white sweatshirt to put over her black and red t-shirt and the dark navy blue jeans she had put on. A plain outfit for a plain neighborhood and another plain day, everything around here seemed plain, it was simply unimaginable that such a place was able to co exist with cities.

“Hun? Aoshi?”

Kris bent over the side of the bed and nudged the sleeping man gently, attempting to wake him, of course to no avail. No, he was out somewhere in his mind dreaming of god only knew what. Laughing she tried to stir him again, this time by shaking him just a little. Once more, he simply rolled to the other side and began a full on sleep again.

“Alright then, you’re in for it.”

Taking a few steps back the she ran forwards and lept onto the soft bed, right ontop of the man. He of course woke up, startled and jumped to the side damn near falling off. His brown eyes wide with shock he shook his head whilst trying to pull himself together.

“Morning?”

In a half yawn Aoshi motioned to Kris to sit by him, patting lightly on the bedcover.

“Naw, I’m going to go see about taking a jog. Maybe even to the park or the library or somethin’, catch you later. Love ya.”

He smiled, nodding happily and decided to roll back over. Kris on the other hand shrugged and rolled her eyes as she shut the bedroom door. It had now crept upon 11 am and the sun blared in the most uncomfortable way imaginable to one’s eyes. Squinting her eyes the slender woman toddled down the old creaking wooden steps and out the front door. It was a old painted door, you could easily tell so by the simple fact the white paint was chipping and thus leaving a grey brown coloration on parts of it. Looking around her to the best of her ability in the light Kris took off in a steady jog down the sidewalk and off onto a side road. It wasn’t nearly as busy as anywhere she’d ever been to and to focus her attention on reality she had to keep her eyes wandering, noticing anything and everything she possibly could.

‘Red, Blue, Green, Gray, Black, Black, White…mailboxes. Green, Brown, Green, Green…lawns. Blue, White, Yellow, Blue, Black, Gray, White, White…houses.’

Kris noted in her mind, counting and labeling as she continued her jog. However, as she was about to round another corner she got a cramp in her lower leg. She hadn’t gotten too far from the apartment and all ready she felt completely out of shape. Sighing heavily she stopped, debating whether or not to return early or continue forwards. It wasn’t however, a large cramp, easily worked out with a few more minutes than normal of workout. With that she had chosen to continue and picked up jogging this time, turning onto another side street with a little more activity. Cars winged past her and her level of focus simmered down, that was, until out of the corner of her eye she noticed a bench. It was a fair day but she’d been jogging now for nearly a full 30 minutes and needed, well, wanted a break. Promptly moving towards the mostly wooden and partly metal object she realized there was something strange lying on the side.

When she finally got closer it appeared to be a scroll, old and somewhat ridden with dirt or dust it bore no name to show ownership or have anyone around for that matter. Anyone that had life to them were bustling by in cars, certainly not jogging or walking around where she was, there after all, was nothing to do around there. Lifting one eyebrow in interest she peeked in the nearby container it was laying partly out of, nothing filled this black void, not right now at least. Being of a curious natured individual Kris tilted the scroll back into its container and picked it up, eyeing cautiously around her as to not be yelled at for stealing. Since there was no clear appearance of an owner she took it with her, continuing to jog now with a small scroll in her left hand.

“Hey, Aoshi! Look what I found! Some old scroll thing, might even be worth some money later. Come ‘ir and take a look!”

Yelling from the apartment’s staircase Kris got back an hour later than usual to the complex. Of course she was fully assuming her boyfriend was awake, but after listening to response telling her to join him upstairs for some lunch she paced herself as the young woman came to the top of the stairs and then down the hallway to her apartment door. Twisting the knob loosely and then nudging the door it swung open smoothly and she entered, letting the door self-close behind her with a ‘clinking’ noise as it shut together.

..//Naming//..

"Alright kid, you got a name or something I can call you by?"

Kris watched as the child reveled, playing with the old carpet. Bewildered by his previous look she thought hard on whether or not to ask about who he was or where he came from, but somehow she figured being a child as he was he hadn't the answers to those questions yet. As for the two strangers, Nara and her partner, had already made a quick exit, leaving her alone with this boy. He looked blankly at her and seemed to effortlessly shake his head at the question she'd posed, as if he understood and was replying with a no.

"Um well...I'll uh, I'll think of something for 'ya..."

Sighing softly Kris plopped herself down on the nearby couch while blowing some stray strands of her grayish hair from around her nose and lips. back to their respective sides. The small orange haired tot grinned contently as the young woman startled, he had managed to tumble to her and latch rather swiftly onto her pant legs, tugging heavily on them. She almost lifted him up, but decided if she was going to do that she'd most likely have to do things for him, and at the moment she wasn't in the giving mood. Her mind diverted quickly to where to keep the boy, they did have a spare room that would hold the child well, but there was absolutely nothing but unopened boxes upon boxes, no bed and certainly no other furniture.

'Shoot, he's going to need clothes too...'

"Well kid, if you're staying here I've got to get 'ya some furniture 'n clothes."

She saw the smile the wrapped around the boy's lips as he listened to Kris happily, apparently he understood when he was about to get something. Rubbing the back of her neck Kris sighed, knowing she'd have to use some of the rainy day money that Aoshi and herself had saved up, a few thousand and some loose change to accommodate the child. Lifting herself from the couch she pulled her hair back behind her shoulders and looked down at the curious young boy still latched to her leg.

"Listen kid, I've got to get some socks and shoes on...then I'll come back out here for you and we'll go see if we can't find some cool stuff for your new room. Just stay here ok?"

Cracking a knuckle or two Kris patted the pale boy on his mop of hair and disappeared into the next room. Meanwhile the boy;s mysteriously dull eyes perked up in interest and wandered around the room, exploring where for the moment he dared not to venture. It took a few seconds for the young child's eyes to find the nearby coffee table, and the rather small book sitting upon it. Glass as it was the child was excited to see the shine it reflected, which in turn caused him to investigate. Inching his way closer to the table top he came within distance to reach the table and yanked at it to pull himself closer.

While Kris was still in the other room she heard a small clank noise, followed by ear-popping screeching coming from where she'd left the boy.

"s**t..."

She muttered as she dropped the one shoe and ran out the doorway, only to see the child sitting on the carpet weeping, a piece of paper lay on his lap.

"Hey, Hey kiddo...what'd you do? What happened?"

He pointed innocently to the glass table and then looked blankly up at Kris with tears in his eyes. She felt sorry for the poor child and bent over to pick him up. As she scooped him up in her arms her pale blue eyes darted over to the opened book laying on the table, a page missing, then back to what the child had in his grasp.

'Shoot, he ripped my new...great...'

Letting a sigh out she shook her head and plucked the page from his hold. She looked at it, inspecting just what he had taken out of her history book.

'Something about a Egyptian pharaoh eh? Akhenaten....'

"That's it! You little trouble maker you, I know exactly who to name you after. Here, let's call you Akhenaten, sound good to you Akki?"

..//Dear Notebook - Kris Page 1//..

'So, I bought this tiny little red notebook the other day at the corner dollar store. It's not worth much anymore since my new little visitor, Akki has since then chewed on it, but since I've been overly bored as of late, I figured this would give me time to do something. My life was already screwed, I grew up around a abusive father and a crack addicted mother, wonderful childhood as you can imagine. Then you place ontop of it me running away, being thrown in jail and a few other issues I've had, well in my early years. From that point I started being a full time street kid, and entered a gang. When they split I split them, not the best choice I've ever made, because It turned out that I ended up being a gang leader myself.

I was taught informally for a few bucks under the table to shoot right, and I have a damn good shot too. I had a great thing going, but then I found him. I regret the day I drag anyone into my messes, but one day this boy, a little punky brat caught my attention. Anyways, he joined alright, gave him about a year and he turned into my sworn enemy, go figure right? Thus far there's nothing overly positive about this situation right? Right. Now comes the good part. I found a love, given two or three years after the punk got his own gangies to follow him. This kid's named Aoshi, he was awefully interesting and has been thus far. I wonder when he'll be home...well anyways, we got along great. It's funny, I saved his a** multiple times and he did the same for me. We started out more of rivals and taunts, but soon enough it got to the emotional soap opera stuff.

Well, since my...eigth? Near death experience we finally left the city, not a bad place, just not good for a gang member, none the less leader. We've moved twice since then, once to the old apartment and once to here. It's funny, we thought we were safely hidden in the first complex, apparently it was too close to the city. Some of the boys that hate me chased my butt down and almost gunned me down, how ironic...I finally want out, and I can't get it. So, we've tried again, hence settling here. There's almost nobody around here, hell I don't even think they'd know where to start looking here. I think we're pretty safe, Aoshi thinks a little more abstractly than I do and he thought so too.

Well, Akki is playing with my dresser at the moment and he's got to get out of my room, I don't know..I just don't want him in my drawers. So until then notebook, I'll keep you posted.

..//Dear Blank Sheet of Paper- Akki Page 1//..

Life isn't boring, not anymore. Kris got, I mean...well, 'Mom' got two more kids today. Some strange lady came over and with this green thing coming out of her pockets, we got two new kids. Momma Kris says I have two new "brothers" to play with now, they're really alike. Both with the same eyes, hair, 'cept one's a little smaller and cries a lot. Good god does he cry. 'N since this is all happening Momma Kris is trying to get them settled into my room, 'er...'our' room now so she gave me this paper bundle. Said I should write about it all...so I am.

Well, that's about it for now. Momma Kris said we're going up to some place called "Camp" tomorrow for a little while. I have no idea what it is, but I'll write about it when I get back. Until then...

..//Dear Notebook - Kris Page 2//..

I'm writing again because it's right before Akki's first mini-opening party that I'm going to throw him. I know he doesn't have any friends, I hope he does get some new friends though...Taye and Horus are good for him I think. Lately he's been asking out the army, apparently bringing him to a store selling brown and green camo pants and other things, including weapons made him like the idea of the army. I've tried to explain to him the details of the army in a nutshell, well about how they protect people...but he's gotten into the army thing really big. Aoshi had to go away for work for a bit, meanwhile I'm keeping the fort up in the house. For his opening party I'm getting him some army clothes and something like a hat or something. Maybe even a haircut, the simple things.

He's so into army it's too cute. Oh god, I just said 'too cute'...time to find something else to do...I think Taye's crying again.
