She nodded grimly, her jaw setting firmly. "Pridelanders..." She growled. "I wonder why it is they alone who remember us?" She hissed. "A bunch of fools they all are, prancing around in their green fields and getting fat on their water." She threw up her head in disgust. "Atleast we can be thankful that we are not one of them. Atleast I will die a Firekin and a proud one at that."

Yes it was Ripuka's stubbornness and her pride which would eventually be her downfall.

"Maybe you're right, maybe just one cub can make a difference. In this grave situation I am willing...I am willing to give it a try." She stepepd closer to him now and brushed her side against his. She was a large female and the only signs of age were a few grey hairs that now peeked through the orangey-red. "Does anyone else know you are here? Or are you newly arrived?"

Danzi let out a scoff. "From what I gather, a former prince of the Firekin was living there for some years, and reared six young. Two of his daughters had cubs themselves." He let out a slight snort. "Tainting the blood lines further..."

The male nodded, bowing his head. "As am I." At her question, he shook his head. "I am newly arrived. Travel still boils in my blood, though, and my mind wishes to know if others have forgotten the mighty lions of the desert. I am afraid I am only passing by lands my paws know without having touched." Indeed, he seemed to allude to an idea that perhaps every Firekin, even if born outside the desert, would know the feel of the dunes under paw, no matter how old they were upon their first visit. In some related yet unrelated thought, Danzi decided that if he were to stay, he'd gladly gather knowledge of the pride. After the peace of the Pridelands, the warrior-like Firekin had his interest piqued. How rich was their history? He would have to brave the desert another time to ask someone.

She growled deep ion hr throat at that news. A Firekin prince mating with a Pridelander! She snarled. That was worse than Kidondo mating with a rogue, though she hated them too. "It seems those born of the royal line are far less picky than those who are not." She swished her tail again and its fiery tip seemed to dance in the wind.

"Not staying?" The old female turned her head up to look at the young, strong male. If she had been younger she would have thought of claiming this one as her own. As it was she knew she could not. It would be frowned upon for one thing and she was quite sure she was unable to love again.

But even as she watched him she tried to imagine herself young again, in her prime and full of life. She snapped her face away to gaze at the approaching dens and growled to herself. She had let her life slip away and now she was old. Her one chance at life and she had completely messed it up.

She was a fool, an old fool, mateless and the last of her family line. She had no one. No one at all.

"Makaa'kali...if I ask it of you, would you stay just a few days? Many of the Pride have their own worries right now, they will not notice you I think."

"Indeed it does seem that way..." He watched her tail, the way the flame-like hairs danced. It was sort of fascinating. "Not for long, no... But I suppose I could spare a few days. I'm not quite so young anymore, and it'd be nice to relax for a bit." He looked around, doing his best to memorise the layout of the area. Someday... A part of him wanted to see this all again, without getting lost.

She didn't know why, but she felt relieved at his words. Relieved that he would not be slipping away during the night as if he were never real. Atleast if she were to birth his cubs then she could learn a little more of him so that maybe one day her cubs would be able to find out a little about him.

But if she told her cubs that daddy was off travelling, would they want to follow? Maybe it was best she said nothing at all.

She was pondering this as they crested yet another dune and paused to look across to the dens that lay just a few paces away.

"I am glad." She replied in a hoarse voice. For some reason she was growing nervous now, nervous of what was to come of this meeting. It was so unexpected but yet so necessary. She turned her head to gaze at him. He may not have been as young as he once was but he was still younger than her and somehow that made her wary. How many beautiful lionnesses had he had beneath his claws? Would she be one of a whole line of females? No, no, that couldn't be right. If he was a traditionalist he would never have mated with a rogue.

She sighed. Relieved. Then slowly she continued down the slope to her den. It was not too far away now, tucked away for privacy. No one came looking for her much anymore so she doubted Makaa would be discovered.

"Almost there. Then we..." She trailed off and shot him a one-eyed look. "Well...you know." She swept her tail up and moved to brush him again, rubbing her side firmly but sensually against his side. She may as well play the part.

"You should be very proud of your gleaming pelt Makaa'kali." She spoke. "It is one of a dying line I am sure, something to be cherished. Tell me, did your mother ever mention my parents? Paytah or Nui'lua? Perhaps they were friends, long ago."

Following after the lioness, Danzi couldn't help but let a moment of cubbish glee slip out as he purposely slid down a dune. After all that walking, it was a mild relief.

If she could have known his thoughts on lionesses, she'd have known that he'd only tenderly known one. He paused in his thoughts and stride at her comment. "Oh? I take it that the pelts are becoming far darker..." He let out a bitter laugh. "When I first saw Pridelanders at a distance, they had gleaming bright coats. Now they grow darker, as black as a night without a moon." He shook his head, glaring at the sand slightly. "It will probably be a breath of fresh air for bright colored Firekin to grace the pride again."

Continuing after her towards the den, he looked up at her question. "I'm afraid she never mentioned more than the basics. Though she did mention to me that the king was... Hm, what was that name she mentioned...? I'm afraid it's been so long, I've forgotten." He let out a scoff. "My memory begins to fail me already, how shameful.."

She laughed as she saw him slipping down the dune and followed suit, enjoying the feel of the sand on her pads. She loved it here, she adored it! She would do anything to protect these lands and the names of Finar-si.

"Pelts change with time." She replied, ears flattening slightly. "Finar-si is change, but I know our Goddess would not mean things to be this way." She shook her head and turned her eyes up to look at him.

"Makadari. Yes, Makadari our beautiful King. How I miss him." She quickened her pace as they crossed the stretch of harder-packed sand, moving towards the den with a new life in her step. Then navigating her way past the dens she found her own. Pausing at its entrance she turned to look at him.

"Here is my den." She spoke, "You may stay here with me, for as long as you wish. I would be glad of the company." She dared to smile again then with a long purr she raised her tail up to tickle his nose and slipped into the darkness.

Nose twitching as the tail brushed under it, Danzi couldn't help but shiver. Glancing back around towards the other dens and the surrounding dunes, he turned and followed after Ripuka. The next few days would be interesting, that was for sure.
