"Spanish is a language, Miss Alvares." "Spain is what you meant", clarified Johannes. "And I must say, that's not very nice what happened to this Old Man Roberto." "Strange that he's a secretary, though..." whispered Johannes.
When Estrelas held her hand, he chuckled and kissed it. "So, Miss Alvares, may I ask how long have you been in LOTUS?"

"Oh, Ah have been here for-"
Estrelas stopped.
You see, 15th century farmers don't care about months, or time periods, or the such. Things are measured in seasons of work. Would you measure the year in rains? Or in concert symphonies? Neither would a farmer think of his life as months, nor would his daughter.
But there was nothing to mark the passage of time for Estrelas. How long had she been here? There had been no planting in spring, no maintenence or sowing or chasing away crows, no harvest! To get supplies, Mista Sain opened a box that was cold on the inside. He called it- oh... What was it called? Refer-gator?
Estrelas laughed uneasily. "Well, you see..." she began, but no way was she going to admit she was the personification of the term "Country Bumpkin."
"Long enough to be promoted," she replied mysteriously.
Meanwhile, Angel did the lapine equivelant of rolling her eyes. Meaning she doesn't know, the rabbit thought.

"Ah, I see", answered Johannes. "Well, I've recently arrived, as maybe you might have noticed." "It must be nice around here, right?"
"Say...would you like to take a little walk around the place, Miss Alvares?", asked Johannes. He wanted to know more about this woman, who comes from next door. It'd be the first person he might consider...as a friend.

"Just a moment, Mista," Estrelas said, then grabbed a piece of paper. She could be heard mumbling, "Hmmm, not forcing him to transport manure, not sewing his clothes without his permission, keeping Angel almost under control... Not asking if anyone's pregnant..."
After a brief pause, Estrelas looked up, a bright smile on her face. "Yes, sah!" she said. "Ah dun care what Father Ferdinand say, you're not a bad man, are you? Let us go!"

"?", was the look Johannes had on his face when Estrelas was reading the piece of paer she had in her hand. After she answered 'yes' to his proposition, he said "Well then, shall we go, Miss Alvares?". Motioning with a bow towards the door, "Ladies first" Johannes said and then "May I ask who is Father Ferdinand?" "The local priest?"

"Thank you!" Estrelas nearly hollared and would have leapt headfirst out of the room if Angel had not heard the "ladies first" part and hopped out first.
Estrelas rolled her eyes.
"Father Ferdinand?" she asked, her brow furrowed before she sighed. "Yes, 'e 'as the local priest..." she added reluctantly. "Like your local priest. Say, 'who was your local priest? Father Ferdinand said his brothers were spread all everywhere as priests."

When Angel the Rabbit came out first, Johannes whispered under his breath, "Ladies first, then lady animals, Engel Hase."
When Estrelas answered his question about Father Ferdinand, he laughed a little, saying "That must be a large family, then." "I can't possibly imagine every one of them being in the religious profession, though."

Angel glared at Johannes, twitched her whiskers, then hopped a few paces to examine a stray wire.
"Ah won't be suprised if turned out that way," Estrelas muttered. "The Father's been living with 'is muther for longer than Ah've been alive."

"Hah...I see." Johannes put on a envious face when Estrelas said the statement about the Father's mother. "It must be difficult to preach if you have to take care of your parents..." "What about your parents, Miss Alvares?" "What are they like?"

Estrelas looked at him, puzzled. What did he mean, what was her family like? Didn't all families have a mama and papa and avo and sometimes ava?
"Is there more than one type of family, Mista Jo-hannes?" she asked.

"Hum, well, there's your normal nuclear family, which is composed of your parents and you." "And then, there's the extended family, which is your parents, you of course, siblings, if you have any, maybe some uncles and aunts in the meantime...." Johannes' eyes opened a little bit when he explained the different types of family to Estrelas. He'd never known his entire family. Heck, the orphanage couldn't find any other living relatives of either his father or mother.
"But that's not what I was asking anyway, Miss Alvares." "What I was asking was, how does your family act?" "What sort of person are your mother and father, and vice versa?"

"Of course I know what a nucleur family is!" Estrelas exclaimed, laughing. Actually, she didn't. But Mista Sain once explained what a nucleur bomb was. So a nucleur family must be pretty dangerous...
"Well, Papa's a farmer... Mama's a farmer too-" Estrelas stopped, realizing how stupid it was stating that the main occupation of a family of farmers was farming. "We're farmers," she said sheepishly. "Mama taught me everything I knew," she added. "Estica- my smaller sister, is very annoying like a gnatfly. And my best friend Eponine is..." She lowered her voice conspiraciously. "She is from the future. The year 1800 to be exact- Angel! Stop that!"
Angel reluctantly disengaged her teeth from a pair of men's pants.
"Hmmm, wonder where that came from. Say, how about you, Mista Johannes?"

"Haha, sorry about that", Johannes said, laughing along with Estrelas.
Johannes was very attentive to Estrelas' description of her family, nodding along as she explained her family to him; he was even more interested when she said that her friend Eponine was from the future, the 1800's. To this, an confused Johannes asked "The 1800's?" "But, that is the past, no?"
When Angel yanked her teeth away from the pants, Johannes thought "I wonder who was the unlucky louse?"
When Estrelas asked him about his family, Johannes froze for a while. What to say? What to explain?
"Hum, well...my parents back in Spain....well, first of all, I'm adopted by them, I am not blood related to them." "But they have been more of a family to me than I could possibly imagine." "My father is an Ambassador for Spain, and naturally he works for the government." "My mother works with fabric, and makes clothes along with her sister and her mother." "I have two siblings, a brother named Alberto, and my little Esperanza." "She's so cute." "I think I have a photo somewhere....", said Johannes as he began to search his pockets fro his wallet.

"No, that is the future!" Estrelas insisted. "She has the most intruging technology such as the gas lamp and a machine that can make cloth. Imagine that! I thought she was fooling with me at first; how can a machine sit at a spinning wheel?" She laughed again and then listened to Johanne's own family.
"Like apprentices," she mulled, then shot back. "You papa was Ambassador? He very important man then!" she exclaimed. "Since are you related but not his blood, should I bow? ...Or curtsey, or wave my middle finger like I saw people salute the President of the Americas?" she asked.
"Ah! A photo! I know what a photography is! It is a colorful pattern of light that is put on paper! I have lots of photographies!" she bragged. Well, that was how the others had described "photographies." "You have a little sister! And a mother that makes cloth, like my Mama and Avo."

(I really ought to reply now xd )
"Ah...ha....." He decided to leave it at that. She must've been living in isolation, thought Johannes.
when Estrelas shot back with her comment. Johannes was surprised "That is true", he said, regaining his composure, "and no, you don't have to bow, Miss Alvares." "And I'm sure that you shouldn't wave the middle finger to ANYONE, since that's, uh,.....very disrespectful." Johannes was again surprised at Estrelas' stark innocence. Or was it naivéte?
He smiled when she said that she had lots of 'photographies'. "It's fun, is it not?"
"Yes, she's sweet, and beautiful like her mother." "My mother makes cloth for everyone in the village, including the important people." Johannes smiled a little nervously at this, since he was saying it as a fact, and not as a braggart.
"Avo?" "Is that your brother?"., asked Johannes. Isn't Portuguese similar to Spanish?, thought Johannes.
