Shale listend and nodded to the girl, then looked at the plushie, wrinkling his nose a bit as he thought. The colors reminded him of the lake Koorie was camping them out at, and it's pretty blue colors. "Spwash." He smiled brightly, proud of the name he'd gotten. That's what he and his adopted siblings did every time Koorie gave them baths in that lake.

"Splash?" Eudora giggled, holding the plushie up to look at him again. "He does look like water, doesn't he?" She grinned, sitting the plushie up on the ground between them carefully. "Splash is cute...but is it a tough name?" She seemed conflicted, thinking deeply over the matter. Her mind raced, pairing up random letters as she searched for something that sounded right.
"How about...Aegir?" she asked. Guardians only knew where she came up with these names. First 'Shira' for her rabbit friend and now 'Aegir' for her plushie...

"Ai....Ai.....Ai-ai-ai-ai...." Shale sighed, giving up on trying to pronounce the name. He couldn't even get his tongue to pronounce the first syllable. Instead, he just nodded his approval of the name, wanting to support the girl, since it was her plushie to name. As long as she could say it, it was fine. "Otay."

Eudora giggled a bit, hoping her friend wouldn't misunderstand and think that she was laughing at him. "Sorry. Names just sort of come to me...that's a hard one though. Try this." She'd try to talk him through the pronunciation slowly. Maybe that would help.
"Start with just the 'A' sound. It's like the letter 'A'. Aaaayyyyy," she sounded out slowly and very overenthusiastic. "Then the 'G' sound! Like this: Geeeeee!" She used the hard sound for 'G', making sure Shale understood before she moved to the last part of the word. "Then you end with an 'Urrrrr' sound. You put them all together and say them quicker. Aaayyygeeeeeeurrrrr. Aaayygeeuurr. Aegir." She nodded sagely, grinning to herself. She liked her names, even if she didn't know where they came from.

Shale nodded and opened his mouth big. "Aaaaaaaayyyyy...." He started, mimicking Eudora so he wouldn't mess up. "....Guh-eeeeeeee.....Uuuuuuuuuuw." His nose wrinkled again, know the last part didn't come out right. "Uuuuuuuuuw." He tried again, with no luck. He tried it a few more times before stopping, still unable to pronounce that last syllable.

Eudora grinned, reaching out to pat Shale's shoulder. "Eh, close enough! Don't worry about it!" She giggled happily, patting the plushie on the head next. "Aegir it is!"
Plopping 'Aegir' into her lap, she smiled at Shale. "Now what? Wanna' play a game or go look for your friends or something?" It seems that the boundless energy of youth wasn't just an idea.

Shale smiled a little when Eudora pat his shoulder. It was hard, saying anything with 'R's in it. He tilted his head when the other Pae mentioned playing, then his smile grew. "Pway!" He wanted to know what fun things this Pae might know.

"Hmm...play something, eh? What can we play?"
Eudora puzzled over the matter for a bit. "How about hide-and-seek? You ever play before? One person closes their eyes and counts while the other person goes to hide. Then the first person goes to look for them! When they find 'em, then the hider has to count and the seeker goes to hide!" She grinned. This game would be much more fun with someone closer to her size than Daddy. As much as he tried, he really wasn't very good at this game in her opinion.

Shale tilted his head as he listened to the instructions, then smiled and nodded. "Otay!... But I no know how to count...." His head visibly drooped. "Sowwy...."

Head tilted, Eudora seemed to puzzle over this for a minute. "Hmm...okay, then we fix that!" She grinned, setting the plushie aside and began scratching something out in the dirt on the path.
A few minutes later, she had the numbers 1 through 10 scratched out roughly in the dirt. "I'll teach you! Well, the first few anyway." She grinned, hiding that fact that she didn't know more than those ten yet either.
"First, you start with 'one'. Well, technically there's a number called 'zero' before that, but you only use that when you have nothing. If you don't have any of something, you have 'zero,' got it? Okay, then 'one.'" She put a single dot beneath the number 1 in the dirt. "Then, 'two!'" She put two dots underneath the 2, then continued through all the numbers doing the same and providing an explanation as she went.
"Got it?" she asked, sitting back when she finished.
Cabel smiled proudly, watching his adopted daughter at play. She really was something special...

The moment Eudora started going on about the number that didn't exist, Zero, Shale was lost. He kinda just watched her with a confused look, then shook his head when she finished. "No get it....sowwy..." He mumbled, feeling bad that he'd have to make her teach him all over again.

Sensing the problem, Eudora nodded. "It's okay. Alright, if I ask you how many apples you have, you don't have any, right? So, you'd say 'zero.' It's the same as saying you have none." She nodded sagely, hoping that an example using something familiar would make more sense than the vague concepts she'd been using.

"No appows is zewo appows?" Shale looked up at Eudora with his large grey eyes, waiting to hear her either correct or say that he was right. This counting stuff was really confusing. Why would you have a number for when you didn't have anything?

Eudora nodded happily, very enthusiastic about her pupil's success. "That's right! Now, let's leave 'zero' alone for a while. Back to the regular numbers." She turned back to her number line in the dirt, pointing out the dots beneath each number and explaining that they represented the amount of 'things' that the number stood for.

Shale, his mind suddenly wandering to apples again, found himself very hungry. His small stomach rumbled in the middle of one of Eudora's teachings, and he quickly shushed at it, putting his hands over his stomach. He wanted his tummy to be quiet, but it just wouldn't stop.
