Hadrian paused in the process of looking down and blushing slightly at Serafima's no nonsense assertion that Galatea thought highly of him, to blink at Aleric. It was nice of the blond feien to make the effort to explain to him. It seemed as though Aleric was used to being Silva's buffer. "That does sound sort of unpleasant, being around someone who sort of spreads nightmares."

"So you moved out. Sensible of you all." Serafima handed back the cups with an approving nod. "May I ask where you're staying now? In case Galatea comes back sooner than expected, of course." The Captain really did have an amazingly unnerving way of injecting polite and dutiful concern into staid words. Though it also seemed as if she actually did care a bit but was completely out of practice in showing it.

"Moved back," Silva admitted. "We're sleeping on the back porch now. The old man and Soho will die if they're too far from Ice much longer." And the nightmares had come back, but he figured that was to be taken for granted.
"Silva has been with our bond for much longer than we have been," Aleric admitted as he took a sip of juice. "Silva and Ice have a very... deep relationship."
"She likes Aleric better," Silva said with a snort, lounging slightly as he took another drink. "But hell, most people do." What he didn't say was that while she liked Aleric better, she LOVED Silva. But it was clear in his lack of jealousy when he said that.

Hadrian was in the middle of super-heating his own small drink, when he looked up to glance between Aleric and Silva curiously at their comments. Aleric and Soho would die even just a little distance away like that? He'd been a good distance away from his own bond for what he supposed was a fairly long amount of time, by the standards Silva was talking about. He wondered if he should have been concerned - though neither she nor Hadrian himself had been worried at the time. Silva didn't sound concerned that he thought his bond liked Aleric better...so Hadrian didn't say anything about it.
"Is that back porch far enough away that the nightmares aren't as ...uhm....vivid, at least?"

"Distance can help," Serafima agreed mildly as she drew out a chair at the table and sat, legs crossing neatly. "Unless it's a trained mind. Then focus can push the limits of the talent to any extent." She tilted her head a bit to study Silva. "You implied it was just a child, though. Surely he isn't trained yet?"

Silva stayed silent for a moment, thinking about it. "There's the matter of distance, and there's the matter of what's in your head to work with. Some people have nightmares easier than others, regardless of how strong or weak the brat is."
He wasn't speaking philosphically, Aleric realized, just speaking from experience. "Yes," Aleric said rather than explain, "it has lessened it somewhat."

Hadrian nodded, and sipped his now steaming drink. He glanced thoughtfully at Silva for a moment, but didn't comment. The insight made sense of course, but something about the way Silva said it made him pause, and then wonder if Silva did in fact have worse nightmares then Aleric or Soho why he didn't move farther away himself. He was, however, beginning to get the hang of figuring out when not to ask questions.
"That's good anyway." He said to Aleric.

"Very good, then." Serafima sipped her tea slowly. "I can see, though, why Galatea thinks such a lot of you. Mental stress is far worse than any sort of physical trauma and the fact that you bear it and overcome it speaks well of your determination." She paused then and a strange look came over her face that, unless you knew the Captain, you would have called sheepish. "The three of you are all very strong-willed," she added swiftly, hiding the moment. "I'm pleased that Galatea can find friendship and inspiration from you."

Silva snorted. "She's a good kid," he said simply as he remembered the first time they had met. He had "captured" her in a game that Soho had insisted on playing. "And a decent fighter. She'll get back sooner or later."
"Ah, yes, I hope they're safe," Aleric admitted. "Dee was acting a bit strange..."
"Dee's always been strange," Silva said.

Hadrian smiled at Serafima's compliment, the Captain was being less detached then usual - he suspected she missed Galatea more then she was admitting too.
He turn, a little sharply, toward Aleric, though, as the Feien expressed his concern, "What do you mean, acting strange?" He asked, carefully. For Hadrian, the expression on his face was almost startling - he was actually frowning, just slightly. "Silva is right...." He admitted reluctantly, "Dee has always been a little bit...odd."
After all the first time he'd met her, she'd become completely convinced he'd been sent by some sort of higher power to teach the feien about the world outside of Gaia.

Serafima seemed to turn over their opinions in silence for long moments and then finally she sighed. "Is she unstable?" she asked bluntly.

"Pretty much," Silva said equally as bluntly. "But she's not a fighter, and she's a bit overprotective if anything. Crazy as hell if you get her talking religion."
"Everyone is entitled to their beliefs," Aleric said in a pacifying manner. "Our own bond has a religion, you realize."
"But she's not bat s**t crazy," Silva said.

"Dee told me once that she didn't think she was ...brave enough I guess...to travel. Something about it not being ladylike." Hadrian tilted his head, thinking about it, "I assume something changed her mind. Its probably good for her to do it though, it seemed to bother her that she hadn't. Or at least, that more feien hadn't."
But he realized, Aleric hadn't actually answered the question. In their own way, all three feien admitted that Dee was indeed a few crayons short of a full set, but she had always been that way.
"But Aleric, by strange do you mean she was acting different then usual?"

Aleric glanced up, hesitating slightly.
"She was messed up over the fleet," Silva said in place of his brother. "She was positive they would attack one of the kids. Now the fleet's gone and nothing's happened, so..." he shrugged.
"But there was something else," Aleric said softly. "She was actually scared, from what Silva told me."

Serafima's lips thinned, pressed together tightly at the mention of the Fleet and Dee's issues. "I hope I did not do wrong in urging Galatea to go with her," she ventured quietly and there was a new note in her voice, something rather like concern and worry. "Galatea had been planning her trip for weeks but refused to leave for... Various reasons. I all but ordered her to complete her quest."
