From what I know about human anatomy, the brain can only last two minutes without oxygen. (I think that's what I heard. If anyone finds this statement incorrect please tell me.)
Actually, the brain does not begin to die for approximately 6 minutes after blodd flow stops. IF you can get blood flow to start anywhere in that 6 minutes, and if oxygen is being delivered, then cardiac death is reversed and brain death is avoided. However, if you can't find out why you dropped in the first place, it's a moot point cuz you're gonna just die again!
Some statistics that TV watchers don't know: (cuz on TV everyone survives if CPR is done!)
CPR is only about 6% effective when started outside a hospital, even if started immediately. So if you croak, and you happen to be standing next to someone with training, you only have a 6/100 chance of living.
Move now to the hospital. We have everyone trained, and we have defibrillators EVERYWHERE! You drop dead in a hospital in front of trained people who start CPR immediately, your chance of survival goes up---to a whopping 15%!
These stats sound horrible-- unless you look at the one that says if no one tries you have a 0% chance! LOL
