The broken-hearted male followed the old gray closely, wondering at how Aion actually looked warm. The wind wasn't blowing nearly as badly as it had been the night before, but what little there was still drove through his fur like frozen little knives.
Flattening his ears against his skull in an effort to keep them warm, he scanned the area around them, looking for signs of life. Absently, he murmured, "Petbe seems like a handful, but I had . . . fun . . . yesterday, with him. He made me feel like a puppy again."
He didn't voice it, but he wondered is Petbe might just be the thing that healed his wounded soul . . .
"Tell me, Aion. What made you choose here, of all places?" There was no hostility or annoyance in his voice, simply curiosity. It was, to say the least, an odd place to make a home after all.

Aion took in a deep breath of the morning and, for the first time in quite a while, really looked like the Alpha he was at heart. Sure, he'd always carried the posture. But something else came back to him as the sunrise struck him there, a drive, the force of personality that would be required of him. It was the realization that finally his life was falling back into place.
He didn't respond to Occam's first statement, that felt more private than conversation piece. The little one was a handful and a half though, he silently agreed.
"Its a sanctuary here." The gray responded softly. "You could live up in that grove, high just there, and no wolf might ever know your resting place unless you showed him. Its a safe place to keep a family." With a flash of a smile and a nod, he started up the shallowly powdered trail to the tree grove above, making brisk steps. Even Aion couldn't hide his excitement at finally reaching his ultimate destination. Who he would find there might be another story.

Looking around, he had to agree with his new alpha. It was peaceful here, and he could easily see the advantages of the high snow banks that built up between the trees. A small grove, after a good snow, could become it's own little fortress.
He glanced down at the snow beneath his paws, flexing them to make his black nails dig into the frozen crystals. With some work, a permanent den could be created in the snow, with a network of tunnels and multiple exits in case of collapse, or the need to escape.
His only worry was food, but with time, they would learn the migration paths of the prey animals, and where best to search for a snack to tide them over between meals.
The whole affair had potential, and all they had was time. At that thought, he glanced at Aion, wondering. Did they have that much time?

Aion may have been old, but he had a few years left in him. Enough time to set up a pack structure and pick a sucessor. Hopefully that would be Petbe. The old wolf would be a good teacher to him, with any luck.
The large old wolf turned his head once again up the last of the slope, and sniffed at the wind rolling down from the peaks. It was time to go investigate. And things would be better for them up there anyway. Trees meant some game, and the fresh fallen snow would be a constant source of water.
Yes, it really could be a wonderful grounds. As soon as he figured out who was already living here, and either chased the other wolf off or brought it into the pack. Ears perked, and he started walking up the slope, looking over his shoulder for Occam to follow.
It was actually a relatively short trip. Aion's joints strained and protested, their crackling more than audible as he trekked through the snow and up the path. A bit treacherous, to be certain, but not impossible to navigate. Still, it seemed to the aged, straining wolf to be hours before he finally stood on level ground and looked out over a grove of trees, chest huffing.
~~~
Livia was already awake. After all, there was someone coming up her mountain! It should have been secret, they shouldn't have been able to navigate up this far without her.
The smallish female swiveled her ears, first bringing them forward aggressively, then flattening them back. They couldn't be up here to hurt her?
Cautiously she stepped out from her den and into the morning light, leaving her Shining Star resting below.
By the time they reached the trees, Occam was shivering again. But at least now the wind couldn't reach them, though it did send the scent of another wolf to the loner's nostrils.
Aion was good, if he had scented that way back at the den.
Looking around, he shook himself, trying to fluff up his fur and maybe keep a bit warmer. It was then that he spotted the pretty ice colored female, coming out of a den completely hidden by the snow. She wasn't facing him, but he froze anyway, knowing she would spot his black coat any minute.
Livia bristled.
It was one hell of a sensation for her, knowing that she was discovered on her own territory. She turned in a circle slowly and her ice vision did indeed land on Occam first, with Aion slightly blending into the landscape. The wolfess herself was like an ice statue in the snow, looking rather comical with all her fur ruffled out defensively. She stared between the duo wide eyed and uncertain. Finally she took a bounding lunge toward the both of them, complete with threatening bark. She was alone in this, even if it was just for a little while. Livia had to defend herself.
~~~
Aion lacked the strength of leg to jump back in surprise, or he might have done just that. The overall effect was he turned out looking very unafraid and almost sagely at the leaping femme. He couldn't blame her for being upset at their presence. Judging by the scents on the wind this mountain had been hers for a long time. That was going to change.
Almost lazily, his body still aching, the old gray turned to look at his companion Occam with the lupine equivalent of a smirk. The femme was outnumbered and outclassed, and it was easiest to just cut to the chase. No need to dance around the subject at hand.
"I think she should get over that hostility and either relent or get off our lands, Occam. Wouldn't you agree?" He turned to stare pointedly at Livia. Old man could be mean when he had to be and when he had the backup to enforce the law. "It'd be wise not to lunge at us again, snapper."

Icy eyes flicking to his alpha, Occam returned the smirk to play along. "I agree very much. It's far too cold to fight, and doing so would only aggravate me more. I'm not much fun when I'm aggravated."
He stood tall, though not as tall as Aion, and smiled a wicked smile; all glistening fangs. It ended up looking more like a silent snarl, and he hoped it had the affect he was going for; that he wasn't a scrawny wolf that had nearly died more times than he could count because of his lacking personal strength. He wanted to look like a wolf that could actually protect his alpha, if anything were to go wrong.

Icy eyes met icy eyes as Livia leered toward Occam. Still, the icy exterior she kept up was only a shell, and inside she was attempting to figure a way out of this very unfavorable situation. The small framed femme believed that the older, larger male wouldn't be a problem even if she were just attempting to make a run for it, but the black one...
The ice sculpture of a lupine flattened her ears back completely. She couldn't see a way out of this one, Occam was putting forth a very believeable front, and Livia wasn't a fightger. Still, she glared, unwilling to back down straight away. Where was her starry sky to protect her?
It was some length of time before the female's body language provided a complete concession to the duo of males invading the top of the mountain. Head shrunk down, ears back, the fur on her neck lay down slightly as those crystal blue eyes cast toward the ground. Still, her tongue wasn't about to be put to rest. "If this is cold for you, wait until the pit of winter." A hissing growl of a voice as opposed to her musical tone that was more normal. She was irritated at being beaten before a conflict even really started, but there was nothing that Livia could do.
Aion stood by, letting what would probably become his Beta handle the situation. He believed Occam to be capable.

Occam hid his wolf-ish grin and watched with cold eyes as Livia relented, body language turning submissive. He ignored the biting comment and strode forward, legs stiff and ready for a leap, in case the icy female decided to change her mind.
The black and orange male circled her, his eyes never leaving her form as he idly sniffed the area around her. He stopped when the wind was again to his advantage, sending her scent directly to his nose. It took him a moment to sort the different scents out, but he finally realized that she wasn't the only one who had lived here.
Flicking his gaze briefly at Aion, he grinned, but it proved to more of a baring of teeth for Livia's benefit. "She's not alone."

Livia utterly froze. Security uprooted and cast to the wind, caught in the midst of two males that she did not want to tangle with, and now her Starlit Skies could be in danger! The snowbound femme wanted to sink into the ground. Never had she been in such a situation, never had she been so cornered. If she could have paled, she would have. Livia more than ever felt the biting chill of the mountain across her face.
The old male picked up his head, letting the swirling breeze of the mountain crest strike across his nose. Occam was right. A single gray ear flicked backwards and then forward again. He should have caught that scent earlier. Foolish, but the situation was such that he could forgive himself for it. "You're right," he gave a sharp nod of agreement and began to trudge forward, a bit of vitality returning to the aged wolf as he started to realize the situation could have more gravity than originally anticipated.
"We have to find the other. A war over territory now is something we cannot afford..." Aion trailed off thoughtfully, gray eyes shrouded in gray fur scanning for any sign of the fourth wolf of this venture.

The empty spot that was filled so wonderfully by his Winter Eyes woke him. He didn't slowly wake, with stretches and yawns, but rather snapped his eyes open, immediately aware. Sitting up, a quick glance around told him that she wasn't in their den. Strange, to already think of it that way. He had only just met her, but already his dominance asserted itself. He wanted her for his own.
He rose swiftly to his paws and headed for the outside world. Perhaps she had gone out to relieve herself, but his spine tingled. Something wasn't as it should be, but being a stranger here, he couldn't quite sense what it was. Best not to get alarmed at ghosts in the shadows, he sternly reprimanded himself. But even so, he quickened his steps to finally exit the cave's mouth.
And there he found the truth behind his premonition. Livia faced two aggressively moving male wolves. Bristling instantly, he leapt forward with a snarl, teeth snapping, to shoulder between his Winter Eyes and the circling one. This one was dark even as he himself was, and young as well. The other was pale, and much much older. Instinctively, it was the younger male he focused his aggression on.
"She isn't yours," he growled, ears thrown forward and lips drawn back. "Back away, stranger." His voice rumbled deep in his throat, heavy with threat. He stood tall, his lanky but tall frame making him significantly bigger than the pale she-wolf. He would protect her to his dying breath, and it showed in every tensed and taut muscle in his body.

Occam stopped in his tracks, blinking at the sudden appearance of the snarling male in front of him. Then he tipped his head back and laughed, breaking the harsh mood that had started to suffocate the wolves standing atop this cold, barren land.
"I wasn't planning on her being mine, either, boy-o. You needn't worry about that," Occam said after his chuckles ceased, his thoughts centered on Ravii . . .
Flicking his gaze to Aion, Occam twitched an ear, wondering what the old male wanted to do. Were they going to take this land from these two, or invite them to join? Choices, choices, and all of them were Aion's.

Aion was too old for this sort of thing. He wasn't quick enough for a fight. Rusty when it came to confrontation. But that didn't change the fact that he was a smart old battleaxe. Gray fur, whitened about his muzzle, eyes and paws, bristled slightly as the large male stepped forward. He was determined to end this without blood, and as it seemed most likely that this new arrival would go for Occam, he nosed between the two, pushing the likely 'threat' to the star furred newcomer slightly out of the way just slightly. Tail stood as a testament to his superiority over the black and red wolf, but his gray gaze stayed averted from Equus in something of a peace offering. Strangely, some vitality returned to his eyes while making those moves of a dominant wolf.
"We're not after your mate, hasty young thing," came the deep and slightly raspy voice from Aion's throat, "we're looking for a place to begin our sanctuary." His head tilted up, observing the snow in the branches of the trees. The sparkle off of them and the beauty of the place made him continue, though up until that point Aion had kept some of his motives to himself. "I want a place for myself and my family where I can rest and find peace, wolves I can trust near me, and if I have to, I want to take others in and show them what peace and family means." There it was, an older, wiser wolf's gift back to his son and those who might need help. A brighter pair of gray eyes fixed on Equuleus, and the whitened muzzle between them grinned. "Surely you can understand that even in your haste, whipper-snapper."
Livia could have collapsed with relief when her Starry Skies came to stand between herself and the startling young invading male. She relaxed, bringing her body close against him but making sure not to open herself to an advance by either of the two newcomers to her mountaintop. "Thank you," she breathed quietly to her love. For the moment, all she cared about was that he was there, so everything would be alright. That thought was emphasized when the old gray stood between the two dark males, seeming to try and dissapate some of the tension.

Despite the younger male's words, Equus did not lower his dominant stance, teeth bared and ready to snap if the wrong move was made towards his own mate. Here and now, he was claiming her as his own, for noone else to have. Ever. Unconciously, he made the decision to not leave her side, despite his comfortable position in a pack led by a wolf he looked up to. The call of nature was stronger than that of logical thought. Even though it made the most sense to keep his standing in his current pack, now that he was facing a physical threat to his Winter Eyes, he wasn't about to leave her to ever face this sort of thing alone again.
He watched warily as the older male interposed himself and spoke words of peace and harmony. That was all fine well and good, but the words were lessened in power by the fact that he had found them advancing on Livia purposefully. The situation had been anything but friendly and accepting at that point.
"Hasty you may see me, grey muzzle, but it seems to me you yourself have been rather hasty in claiming what isn't yours to claim." His fur remained bristled along his spine as he spoke. "You speak of family and peace, but I find you here, outside our den, circling my mate like conquering alphas." He let a snarl slip, throwing a glare over the old one's back at the other male. So far, all he had was the younger's words as proof of lack of intent on Livia. On the defensive, he saw danger first, and was suspicious of any offer of friendliness. They would have to do more than talk to earn his trust.

Rolling his eyes at Equus, Occam flicked one ear back in a wolf shrug and abruptly sat on his haunches, tail wagging faintly. He turned his attention to the ice between his toes and started to chew it out, completely ignoring Livia, and the only evidence he was listening to Aion being his other ear, which was pointed in the old male's direction.
His entire demeanor said, Don't look at me. I'm not a threat. Just your friendly, neighborhood chuckle buddy. Har har har.
