At the bite near her ear, the cream and violet femme glued her ears back to her head, jerking her neck to the opposite side. Had he just nipped at her. . . .? Blue eyes looked stunned as she glanced as Occam, a new wariness causing her to feel unsetteled and unsure. The growl in his throat wasn't helping matters and Ravii couldn't help but wonder what it was she was doing wrong this time?

Yes, she appreciated his offerings but . . . but . . . see? He was proving her right with everything he snarled at her! Telling her to shut up, to be silent, to sleep wasn't going to bring her any closer to pleasant dreams. And all of her words, everthing she told Occam had been for his beneift. She just wanted to let him know that she knew her place.

Apparantly that hadn't been the right thing to do.

Funny how she pushed Eros away by . . . . . by what? Loving him too much?
And now she was pushing her friend away be giving him approval to leave. She wasn't telling him to get lost, merely letting him know he had the option.

Speechless, as well as surprised by his quick temper, Ravii had nothing else to say. She wasn't going to fight with him, wasn't going to argue. There was no point to it, was it? Arguing would only upset him further, and that was the last thing the cream and violet wolf wanted.

Averting her gaze, turning her head, Ravii just didn't know what to do. " . . . . sorry." And that was that.

Sorry? Was she sorry? Oh, on every level imagineable. And so she said nothing further, the wheels in her head and heart churning by the whirlwind in her soul. Tonight wasn't a very good night.

Maybe tomorrow would be better.

Though his temper flared quickly, it cooled even faster. Whimpering, Occam scooted forward until their noses did touch. "Ravii . . . please . . . I'm the one that should be sorry." His tongue darted out to lick her nose. "But, damnit, you have to stop blaming yourself. Stop being stubborn, and just sleep. Please?" He waited a moment, the silence growing around them.

Suddenly, he had an idea. The scent of water came from somewhere close by, and he took to his feet, disappearing to find it. Less than a minute later, the black, heart stained wolf returned, dragging a giant hosta leaf behind him slowly, setting it before the purple stained femme.

There, in the middle, was a small pool of crystal clear, cool water.

Ravii's tail tipped thumped breifly for a moment behind her, blue eyes dim. She appreciated his apology, though deep down she knew it wasn't needed. She was in the wrong. She shouldn't have broken down in front of the male, shouldn't had allowed her composure to fall to pieces.

It wasn't fair for Occam.

Still, the female doubted he'd want to hear further apology. A fine mess of things she was making! A cool nose touched her own, and she looked back up at the heart-stained male. Apology stained her features, composure laced with shame. There was no way to fix her mood, no way to heal her sorrows. . . .

but she could try to sleep, couldn't she?

"All right, I'll -" Occam rose to his feet and left.

. . . . . what?

Staring dumbly after his retreating form, Ravii felt her throat choke again. He was leaving now? Sure, she had told him he could but a part of the wolfess hadn't wanted him to really do it! Violet ears pricked ever so gently, trying to trace his pawprints back to wherever iti s he roamed. So that was that, was it?

Push him away too.

The brief moment of silence, of lonliness stretched out before the wolf. It overwhelmed her, and dashed her heart in to two. She wanted to call after him, to beg him to come back, to stay the rest of the night. He could leave after dawn, it wasn't as if she'd force him to stay. . . . Now that he'd left, now that he was gone, it pained her.

That's what she got for being so down hearted.

"Occam?" She called out, almost desperately, half-pleadingly. Maybe he'd come back. . . ? Or had he been so bold to abandon her now too?

A ruffle in the woods, a new movement. Oh could it be, would it be. . .? It was! Black fur reappeared, footsteps gingerly padding upon the forest floor. What was it he had brought. . . ? A giant leaf. . . a . . . Raising her head, the girl couldn't help but stare as he set the small pool of water before her.

. . . .

. . . .

One moment, then two, an eerie silence growing. Blue eyes stared down at the plant, lack of light causing the pool of water to be black as blood. Still, Ravii didn't need to see her reflection to understand what she looked like; nor did she need Occam to remind her of the reasons behind the water.

A whimper and she tore her eyes up from the plant to stare at Occam. What kindness! He'd remembered, and to think, he'd brought her this! Such a beautiful gesture. . . . So moved by his thoughtfulness, for a brief moment the cream and purple one forgot about Eros, his abandonment, her fear and tragedy. For a moment, a light of sincerity, grattitude and thanks caused her eyes to sparkle with their former, ever-so-delicate gleam. "Oh, Occam," she breathed, words tangling in her throat.

So touched she forgot to smile, but it wasn't ncessary - her body language said enough. Another wistful whimper, and she reached out to the shadow wolf with her paw. ". . . thank you!"

So the cream and violet femme couldn't get to the river - Occam had brought some of the waters edge to her.

Resting her head beside the plant, paw still stretched out towards the black furred wolf, her gratitude was sincere. Maybe, just maybe, she could do some sleeping tonight. Maybe. . . someday. . . somehow. . . . with friends as kind as Occam, everything would turn out all right.

As if a switch had been turned, Occam watched the violet femme relax, bit by bit. Her eyes shone with her happiness, and he hoped that for at least a little while, she forgot about Eros.

Lowering to his haunches, he cocked his head and watched her, unsure of where she was going to sleep. Out here? Or with her pups? Until he knew, he wasn't going to lay down again.

"Will you sleep now, dear Ravii? And in the morning, will you show me the beauties asleep in that den? I would truly like to see them," he added, smiling softly. Like was an understatement. He was more than eager to see the pups that had come from this beautiful, sweet, caring femme.

What a cruel world to have hurt her so.

Resigned to sleep, afraid of the restless and wicked dreams her subconcious might send her, Ravii knew she had no choice. When else would she get an evening without fear or threat of shadowed enemies? Tonight she could entrust Occam with her safety. . . .

And the safety of her daughters.

It wasn't easy, but. . . the black wolf had trusted her, it would only be fair to return the favor.

Pulling herself to her feet, the cream wolf kept her ears flat and her tail partially tucked. Now that she'd decided to attempt a few moments rest, her previous exhaustion hit her like a ton of bricks. Her eyes burned, her muscles ached, and part of the wolf yearned for nothing more than the comfort of her pups and sleep.

No matter what dreams may come.

"I will," she agreed softly, glancing down at the delicate pool of water. It did her heart good to see the leaf, the puddle. A small gesture on his part, perhaps, but it meant so very much to the cream and violet female. Eros might have said he loved her, and told her sweet promises. . . . but in the end, his actions spoke louder than his words. His promises were asily made and easily broken.

Reaching forward, she hesitantly, cautiously nuzzled the heart-stained male's muzzle, offering him the softest of licks. ". . . . thank you. . ." she whispered, shyly turning to pull herself back to the mouth of the den. Her heart still hurt, and she doubted she'd ever truly forget (or forgive) herself and Eros for his folly. But, with a little time and a little help from her friends, there was always such things as a new day.

"I'm sure my girls would love to meet you," she added softly, glancing over at Occam and offering him the briefest of smiles. Yet another topic that could get her to smile, regardless of the hurt in her heart. Her children. . . her babies. . . her daughters.

Stealing one last look over at the black male, just to be sure that he was there, was present, and committing his image to memory (just in case) Ravii slipped in to the darkness of her den. For once she didn't have to worry about intruders, she could curl up tight with her daughters and maybe, just maybe, sleep easy.

((So were you up to doing a bit of Next Morning RP? o.o; I know Ravii would like him to still be there come morning, and he can then meet Amarii and Mayrii. *laughs* ))

The loner male watched as Ravii disappeared into the darkness to join her pups, his ears pricked forward. Assured that she wasn't going to change her mind and come back out, he turned to stare at the little puddle of water, glimmering darkly in its leafy cradle.

Who would have thought that such a simple thing could have done so much.

Well, Occam had thought of it, and that was enough.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The sun warmed his dark fur the next morning, waking him from his deep slumber. Plopping onto his side, he stretched his entire body as far as possible, enjoying the fact that he had slept soundly. A yawn parted his jaws, and a sneeze quickly followed, making his tail thump.
His night had passed without incident, but he wondered how it had been for the femme curled up in her dark den.
Rolling upright, he crawled forward slowly until he was directly in front of the den. There was no way he was going to wake her, especially if she was sleeping soundly, but he heard a sound that made his ears swivel forward.
The sound of . . . puppy paws?
There was something out there. Whatever it was, whoever it was, it was big. Amarii glanced over ata her mother, sound asleep, and her sister. Mmmph. . . . why wouldn't they wake up already?
The sunlight poured in through the den's entrance, though it blocked whatever form was nearby. Pink ears swiveled now and then, but thus far the little girl had decided to wait. Momma always said to stay very, very quiet when she was away. . . especially if it sounded like someone was nearby!
But, Amarii mulled, her mother wasn't away. In fact, her mother was right here. So didn't that mean she could investigate the strangeness of outside? She'd been out of the den before. . . but today, this morning, there was something new to discover!
Maybe now, with her mother so sound in sleep, she could take a peak? Just a quick one. . . . Rolling to her paws, the little white and red pup began to trot slowly away form her mother and . . .
One step, two step. . . Almost there. . . . Her black nose sniffed at the foreign scent, completely unfamiliar. Another step, and another - she was getting close to the mouth of the den . . Just a few more and then -
"Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. . . " A low warning growl echoed off the walls.
It wasn't a snarl directed at Occam, oh no, it was directed at her daughter. Though Ravii knew who waited at the den's entrance, she didn't want to give her daughter approval to have such loose freedom. Next time she could walk out and be snatched up by a bear, or hungry fox or coyote, a lynx, hawk or two-legger! Even another wolf. . . .
Watching her daughter sink to the ground, the cream and violet female stifeled a yawn. She'd long since learned that there was no such thing as late-mornings or sleeping in. "Come here, baby," she encouraged, rising to her feet.
The little slowly retreated, pausing to glance wistfully over her shoulder at the den's entrance.
"We'll go out together, all right?" She paused a moment, tugging her daughter down to give her a quick grooming. Certain some of her fur was setteled into place, she realeased Amarii. "There's someone up there I'd like you to meet."
Amarii could hardly wait! Squirming throughout her quick bath, the little puppy was soon released. Tail wagging with delight, she pranced in a circle, awaiting her mother's approval to run. "Can I go see? Can I? Can I, can I, can I?" Oh, who was this new person they were going to meet?
Was it a boy or a girl, a wolf or a dog? A lynx? A bear?!?
Excited by this propostion, she could hardly wait for her mother to roll to her paws. As soon as the cream and violet wolf took her first step, Amarii was gone! Bolting through the entrance, the red and white wolf puppy skidded to a halt at the sight of Occam.
Woah.
It was a wolf and it wasn't Eros and it was a boy and it was black and it had a weird heart on its face!
Red ears pushed forward, tail waggging back and forth, the girl hesitated for just a moment. Should she. . . ? Why not! Trotting forward, she wuffed softly at Occam, batting at closest paw and prancing delightedly around him. Her nose flared as she investigated his scent. Hmmm. . . .
"Who're you? My Mommy knows you, I hope you know, so if you're trying to scare her it's probably not going to work." The proud princess gave a little giggle, before turning to run back and hide between her mother's paws.
"I'm Amarii! And this . .this . . this is my Mommy." She explained, again, just in case the black wolf didn't know.
Unsure where to go - did she stick by her mother or stick by the stranger? - the red and white femme made a game between scurrying back and forth between one and the other.
Ravii was very proud. Pausing at the mouth of the den, she watched as he daughter made nice with Occam. Blue eyes studied the male curiously, unsure of his reaction to such a little thing. Had he ever had puppies of his own? Was he particularly paternal or did puppies annoy him? Who knew, really. . . .?
Settling at the mouth of the entrance, she said nothing. Ravii would let Occam and Amarii get aquainted before she asked hos his night was. It was amazing he was still here at all. . . . .
Much as Ravii hated to admit it, she wouldn't have blamed Occam for sneaking off during the night and never returning again.
The black male watched little Amarii with a grin he couldn't hide curling his jaws. She was adorable, and though he had only just met her, he could tell that she had a very unique and innocent personality.
Just like her mother.
Chuckling at the little pups statement, he shook his head. "I'm not trying to scare her, little one. I was just waiting to meet you." He sat up on his haunches, then dipped his head in greeting to the puppy.
"It's a pleasure to meet you, Amarii. My name is Occam, and I am a friend of your mommy's," he told her, but his blue gaze drifted up to look Ravii in the eyes.
"How did you sleep?"
The white and pink pup paused in front of Occam's pause as he spoke, reassuring her that he wasn't some monster in disguise. Her mother didn't seem at all concerned, and the black furred wolf seemed amicable enough. Maybe he'd actually play with them~!! Wow - wouldn't that be something??
"A friend?" Gold eyes went wide before the pup gave an infectious giggle. Bouncing from paw to paw, she gave a giddy leap. "I didn't know she had friends! So does that mean you're my friend too? Huh? Hey, how come your fur is so black. I haven't ever seen a black wolf before. . . . it's not like mine at all, ya know," One excited conversation rolled in to the next. Completely assured that Occam wasn't some monster, she scooted closer, sniffing his nearest paw. A pink tongue snuck out to lick at the black fur, just to see if it tasted like ordinary fur, and a in a flash his paw was now a toy.
Little teeth took playful nips at his ankle and claws, the girl summersaulting over his feet happily. She landed on her back, semi-twisted, nipping at his leg with a happy growl. "Oouh oooh ike uh ay?" She questioned with her mouth full of fur.
Ah, the joys of puppies. Occam was the newest jungle-gym in the neighbrohood and Amarii wasn't at all shy about using him.
Ravii sat at the mouth of the den, tail curling around her paws. This morning the wolfess looked . . . better. Still a bit underfed, and her body posture easily spoke of tense muscles, but overall . . . she didn't look quite as sad. Blue eyes glowed with pride as she admired her white-coated pup. On top of it, one couldn't deny the effects of having a trusted friend around. . . .
Catching Occam's gaze, she ducked her head in an apologetic fashion. Despite her action, blue eyes burned brighter than the night before, the touch of a nights concern causing her old self to spark. She was far from recovered, but today Ravii actually felt . . . alive.
"I slept better then I have been," she admitted, a yawn accompanying her words. Oi . . . . "And yourself? Did you sleep any?" Concern caused her eyes to narrow slightly, ears drifting back against her head. He hadn't stayed up all night, had he? The shadow wolf must have gotten a few moments rest. . . . right? Oh Ravii hoped so!
PostPosted: Mon May 28, 2007 3:47 pm
Occam glanced down at the little puppy, his tongue lolling happily, head cocked to one side as he watched her play with his paws, one of which was almost as big as her head. "My fur is black, well, because it is. Why is your fur pink and white?" he countered, lifting his unmolested paw to brush it over her ear. "And yes, I do like to play. I have another friend who I play with all the time. You'd probably like him, too."
Gladly letting her use him as a play ground, the dark furred wolf lifted his broken hearted face and nodded to Ravii. "Some. I've been sleeping a lot more lately, and last night I just didn't feel the need to. So I watched the moon." His tail thumped a few times on the ground. "You look better. Are you hungry?"
Amarii was delighted by this new figure. Occam was of different shape than her mother, and he didn't seem to mind being used in the least! "I only play with Mama or Mayrii," she admitted, pausing in her attack of his foot to look up at him. "I probably would like him - who is he? What's his name? I like everybody~!" She declared proudly, red tassle wagging happily behind her.
Golden eyes twinkling, she took a final n** at Occam's paw before rolling to her feet. Trotting quickly around, investigating Occam with various licks, sniffs and nibbles, Amarii hastily found what she was looking for. A tail! Growling in her throat, Amarii dipped in a bow, butt high in the air before taking a great pounce.
Oh yes, his tail would be hers~!
Ravii was pleased that Occam had found some comfort in sleep, if not tonight than other evenings prior. Their first meeting had been under the account of restlessness. . . . and in reality, it hadn't been that long ago. Strange how things changed, how life progressed. . . .
Very strange indeed.
"The moon can make for some pleasant - if quiet - company," Ravii murmured, allowing her tail-tip to wag. Quiet company wasn't a bad thing, in fact often enough the moon was Ravii's only companion while her children slept. That was just as well though. . . at least the moon could be counted on to return to its place in the heavens night after night. "I hope it was pleasant enough," she added. After her fit last night, Ravii didn't dare want to go back to that awful . . . mood.
Depression wasn't an easy thing to beat... even for a wolf.
Glancing over her shoulder, Ravii groomed some of her coat, hoping to look a bit less frazzeled. Blue eyes eyed the entrance of the den. "Mayrii? Sweetling? You're not gonna sleep all day, are ya?" She encouraged her other daughter to wake and meet their guest.
Still, she wouldn't force her to be up and about if Mayrii really didn't want to be. Nine times out of ten Ravii had to encourage them to stay in the den and not wander while she went out to hunt. So to encourage them to come out was something . . .different.
Blue eyes turned back to Occam, and she gave a little grin. "Must be early still. . ."
Now. . . food. Breakfast. The mother licked her lips at the thought of food, and instantly contemplated what they had. Hunting was getting more and more difficult - her girls still drank milk, but meat was fast becoming necessary. Very soon they'd be eating meat a hundred percent of the time, so that meant she'd have to bring home even more to satisfy herself and them.
Rabbits were good, but scarce. Baby deer were dangerous, and small does weren't easy to catch by oneself. Fish was her food of choice. . . . but it took a lot to satisfy. There was a reason wolves lived in packs, she remembered. . . .
This must have been one of those reasons.
"I . . well, yeah, I am actually," she admitted with a rueful grin. "I'll need to do some hunting today." She wasn't going to admit her luck had been waning the past few days. Not enough to cause her to panic, but enough that anything she did bring back went to her daughters. Just one of those ruts, really. . . . Every wolf had them, a string of close calls and empty stomachs.
Thankfully, she'd stumbled across a rotting log that looked to be filled with creeping, crawling insects. If she had no luck on land, and no luck at the river today .. . . well. . .bugs and barks would be it. "I'm sorry there's nothing to offer you," she apologized softly, blue eyes dropping to her paws.
The puppy teeth on his tail was an easy thing to push to the back of his mind, and he found himself pawing at Ravii's shoulder. "Nonsense. You need to stay with your pups and relax. I'll go find us some breakfast."
He paused with on paw in the air, waiting to see what he reaction was. Hopefully she wouldn't fall back into her panicky depression and think that he was leaving her like her flea bag of a mate. Just the thought of that wolf gave him heartburn.
"Alright?"
Ravii studied Occam for a moment, small smile still planted firmly upon her features, though a glassiness did dim the light within her eyes. It was just a brief moment of hesitation, a brief flicker of panic - but Ravii was quick to keep her tattered emotions in check. First off, this was Occam. . . he'd been so kind to her already, why on earth would he duck out on her now? If he said he'd get breakfast, then she had no reason to doubt him.
Secondly. . . .if, perchance, he did flee or get tied up for days upon end Ravii had hunted before so it would be nothing new. She'd just push her pups back in to the den, tell them to not move and inch and bring home a feast of her own. There was an answer to every problem, and she, Ravii, needn't worry.
Occam was her friend. . . .
He wouldn't let her down.
In a flash, hardly more than a breath's hesitation, she nodded. Reaching over, a small chuckle almost wanting to escape her throat, she nosed at his raised paw. The black and red wolf looked so goofy standing there so seriously, paw raised in the air as if in salute. Blue eyes bright, ever so pleased that for once she wasn't on call for breakfast, her cream and violet tail gave an ever gentle wag. "Well then, my fine sir," she smiled almost playfully, a shadow of what she could have been. Dipping her head in a sort of melodramatic bow, she gave the softest of wuffs. "Fare thee well on your journey," she teased, "And may you have happy hunting."
Oh, how she hoped Occam knew how much she appreciated his help. Ravii hunted as large of game as she could, and did her best to keep small caches near the den. But it wasn't easy being alone with not one, but three mouths to feed. . . .
Today was a very luck break for her indeed.
Still in a bow, she lowered her bottom and slipped in to a rested position. "Amarii," she beckoned her daughter, still firmly latched on to Occam's tail. "Come play with me for a bit - Occam needs his tail to bring us home some breakfast. . . . " She explained, hoping the thought of food would be enough to extract her teeth.
What? Food!? Her mother's beckon was enough to bring Amarii racing around Occam. Bowling headfirst in to Ravii, she licked her mother's face and cheek ecstatically, red tassel wagging a million miles per hour. It was amazing the thin thing didn't go flying off completely!
Nuzzling Ravii affectionately, the girl ducked underneath the older wolf's chin before turning to peek out at Occam. "Don't forget Mayrii's still sleeeping! Don't forget about feeding her too," Amarii reminded, throwing Occam a very large, very wide smile.
For just a moment, the smile turned in to a demanding frown, almost a pout, and she reached a paw out torward the male. "But you better come back or I'll be mad!"
The last time Eros went out for a meal had been the last time she'd ever seen his crimson and heart-spotted coat. It was a fuzzy memory in her mind, but Amarii had bonded enough with her father and his scent to know.
He'd left.
And she wasn't going to stand for it again.
Ah-ah-ack!!! Ravii winced as the words spilled from her daughters mouth, rolling her eyes and throwing Occam an apologetic glance.
Snap. She didn't think Amarii would have remembered or known. . . . .
"Hush you - be nice. Occam will be back, you don't have to worry about that." But who was Ravii trying to convince? Amarii or herself?
PostPosted: Wed Jun 13, 2007 7:20 pm
Ravii's elegant words made him smile, as did the light he saw in her eyes. She trusted him to come back, and that was what he was going to do. Only death would keep him away.
But when little Amarii echoed the same words that probably rang in her mother's head, Occam laid his ears back in sadness, whining. Before he could stop himself, he dipped towards the little puppy, his rump in the air, but his tail was almost between his legs.
"Little princess, if I'm not back in an hour, you have my permission to come find me and take my hide," he whispered fiercely, licking her muzzle before nipping her playfully on the ear.
Righting himself, he dipped his head in a nod to Ravii, than slipped away into the shadows, the shush of the ferns moving the only noise to announce his departure.
Amarii tilted her head inquisitively as Occam's ears dropped back against his head. Had she said something wrong? All she'd wanted to do was make sure he really WOULD come back with breakfast. . . .
Still, she was pleased that he promised her he'd return. THAT made her happy - along with the lick and ear n**. Smile blossoming upon her features once again, a light danced in her eyes as she giggled, prancing happily from paw to paw. Squealing in glee, the pup collapsed melodramatically to her side, laughing just to laugh.
"One hour it is, or else!" She reminded as he left, rolling around on her back in a new burst of excitement. Occam said he'd come. . . . well. . . she'd wait. An hour was an hour. . . . which. . .well. . . "Hey mom?" She asked as the black male disappeared. "What's an hour?'
Ravii herself was inwardly surprised at the vehemence within Occam's whispered words. He seemed so sad by those words, by her daughter [and her own] doubt. It hurt Ravii to see such an expression. . . . Her white and red furred daughter really hadn't meant anything by it. Oh dear. . .
Still, part of the mother was relieved. Maybe - no, no, NOT maybe - WHEN Occam would return she could thank him. He'd been so supportive last night, allowing her to crumple in to pieces, and now here he was going out of his way to feed them.
What had she done to deserve such a kind friend?
Watching the broken hearted male slip away, Ravii silently wished him good luck, and patiently awaited his return. It wasn't exactly breakfast that she yearned for though. . . . Already, crazily enough, she missed his company.
Being alone did that to a wolf though, she mused. To go without company for so long, she desperately craved it - and then to have it, only to watch it slip away. . . well. . .she was back on the mad desire for friends, now more than ever.
Thanks Eros. . . Hmph.
But. . . . . such was the way of life. Farewell and goodbye didn't necessarily HAVE to mean forever.
Even when the black wolf eventually drifted away, that didn't necessarily mean it would be permanent.
