Hrm, but what would we protest?

Other than my co-workers and I protesting poor pay for what we do, and I'm getting up to $7.20 an hour (after 3 years, you start out at $6).

....Hrm, fangirls you say?

*shrug* his face is plastered all over those girly teen mags, so i figure someone's gotta like him.

I was thinking of something like pro-integration/anti-segregation and even fluffiness appreciation, somewhere pretty obvious and public. It's bound to attract attention.

Plus, it's a hell of a lot better than a sock-hop, a sock-hop is a total cop-out that required pretty much no creativity.

The movie says 1962, the musical doesn't specify, but it had to be the early 60s, while the bubblegum pop variety shows were still very popular, and it would have ran alongside the beginnings of the counterculture movement.

I think it'd be best to find some way to capitalize on the music. The music is incredibly well written and catchy, so if you can get people to hear the music somehow, it might hook them in. Though you kind of have two built in audiences already: those familiar with the musical or movie, and the yonger, easier to bait zac efron fangirls.

.....hey how about a "protest"?

Me personally I am going to see it for two reasons.... I love this movie and to see John Travolta in drag rofl

With that whole protest idea you could protest
a) Nuclear war... which was a somewhat big issue
b) the price of a movie ticket... at the movie theater here it is $9.50 matinee and $11.50 regular what a rip off..

what about having a car show with pre-1963 cars they have those all the time here lotsa people and lotsa cars...

anyway good luck with that
whatever idea you guys come up with I hope you win...

Jesus Christ, it's $6.50 here matinee and $8.75 adult at night.

And I still have people complain about matinee price -_-

We're also ten times better than the other theater that charges the same amount.

Thanks ^_^

I am happy/upset they are making this movie. I am Broadway person..If you don't know who I am I do plays like its coming out my butt. I've seen Hairspray on Broadway three times and I even sent an audition tape to be in this movie, but they said I was a little to big and my Mom told me I wasn't losing more weight for a movie.

Anyway, I am upset by this movie, for I hate the High school musical kids who think they see Rent/Phantom/Chicago, because they heard it's a movie and they they are hard core musical theater kids. It annoys me. Now this musical movie is going to make it soooooo hard for me to ever get the role of Tracy on Broadway or any touring theater. I will most likely never get it now. I also think it's not doing justice to the musical and the orginal movie the musical is based off of. I know it hasn't even come out yet, but I cringe at the site of movie musicals..I didn't like Rent, I hated Phantom, and I walked out on Dream Girls. Keep the musicals to the stage and how about Hollywood makes some really time to write there own movie scripts.

haha..Though Hairspray is an amazing message, but when you go out to the lobby at the end of the musical all the cute t-shirts don't come in plus sizes.

It does suck that kids see things like High School Musical and think they're big, hardcore fans... but I don't think that takes away from actual musical theater.

I loved Rent, I loved Phantom of the Opera, I loved Dream Girls.... turning it into a movie gives them more room to explore ideas and things they might not in the theater production (if you watch the extras on the Phantom of the Opera DVD Andrew Lloyd Webber was so excited about it). Andrew Lloyd Webber even commented at how excited he was to see kids so excited to see it, kids who can't afford to go to the Broadway shows, who don't have the resources or time available to them to do that. Some of these kids honestly do have an interest in the story, and by turning these shows into movies they make them more accessable to those people. And honestly, if I ever have money and the ability to go see the stage productions of these, I'd be more willing to spend the ridiculous amounts of money on it if I know I like it... this also gets more people into the theaters, people who might have thought musicals weren't for them or that they're not the kind of person who belongs there before. I'm hoping Wicked is going to be made into a movie soon, so that I can see it even if I can't afford/manage to get tickets whenever it does finally come to Alabama (it's been scheduled to come for years).

The girl in the movie is plus sized, I doubt just because you were too large for their production doesn't mean you won't be able to make it on another stage somewhere, especially if you do your best and have confidence. Talent and looks together are more important than just looks... but when they have so many people applying they have to weed it out somehow.

No ideas are all that original, my teacher today was describing a movie that sounded like a non-musical version of the Producers. I can tell you movies that have come out in 3 years that have almost the same plot. And many musicals are based off of movies. You're just denying yourself another thing to enjoy by worrying about the purity, the only thing that should matter is how you feel about what you're seeing, and how you feel about your interest in theater. Not what every other kid thinks.

Oops, I kinda went on a bit of a speech didn't I? gonk

Shampoo, your post fills me with righteous anger, or maybe just anger.

You're too "big" for the movie, and there's no plus-sized shirts?

I need to go to some key people and take out their left kidneys and beat them with them. ><

That's the way it is usually when I go to musicals.

I can't fit into the women's shirts, I just buy t-shirts -_-

Oh, also, Shampoo... I just remembered, we're supposed to be as far as I know getting Hairspray shirts... I dunno, if I managed to get two would you possibly want me to send you one? It'd be slightly used 'cause I have to wear it while I work, but I might could send it to you if it's not too expensive and you'd like it XP

You're missing the bigger picture. You may not notice it because you were spoiled by theater. You know how it works, you know what's good, and you've been able to actually see live stage shows.

The majority of people, however, have little to no experience with musicals whatsoever. Live theater isn't exactly an easily accessible form of entertainment. It's limited to places where there's enough people who might give a damn, the tickets are EXPENSIVE to the common person, and frankly, the views kinda suck if you weren't lucky to get good seats cause you were late, or couldnt afford it.

Theater has been somewhat on the decline the past 20-30 years, and movie musicals until now have been somewhat of a rarity, and a novelty. Until a few years ago, the only recent big musical hits that made it to film were things like Grease, Jesus Christ superstar...etc.

With the new releases of movie musicals, it introduces the art to a whole new genration of people, who never would have known they liked that kind of stuff because they can't go to broadway, but now they can easily rent The Producers, or RENT, etc. and can get interested and excited about it, and maybe even take the step to go searching for more "legit" theatre. These movies are reviving it in a way. And that can only be a good thing.

Theatre snobs are a huge reason why people are afraid of going in the first place.

My only complaint is that the studios completely ignore the one thing that made the show what it was in the first place. The actors. RENT was great because columbus decided to use the Original cast. Does it compare to the stage show? Not really, But you can't compare it to the broadway show. It's an entirely different feeling and entirely different directing and should be judged as seperate entities, not the same thing. The stage show seems to be more gritty than the movie, which felt a lot smoother.

For the most part, they casted Hairspray with actor du jour. I really don't like Link's voice. At all. It sounds synthetic.

come to think of it, i don't like Tracy's voice on the current touring cast either. I saw it on youtube, and she tries so much to sound too "soul", and it doesn't fit her character at all and her growling throws her off tune and beat.

He said what I was thinking, but better crying

Also, I saw the original movie yesterday and I'm much more excited about the new one... I enjoyed the original, but it was pretty ridiculously dumb. I was the only person who actually liked it out of a group of 10, everybody else just said it was bad. And I didn't feel like the plot or the characters were explored enough, I'm hoping that the musical version explores the plot deeper, and so I really think it'll be better than the original. Plus it has Christopher Walken, it has to be good.

Awesome point, and well put. I'm definitely one of those people who doesn't have easy access to Broadway or theatre in general, and it is likely that I will never see the musical on stage. So even though I know its not the same thing, I am excited to see the movie version.

(And Ghosty, you put it well too, I just chose to quote this one sweatdrop )

See, I'm not smashing people because they can't get to Broadway and see these shows. I'm not smashing people who can only see these shows in movie form. Just the fact that people think once they seen it on a movie screen they understand like theater in general. Then they start like wearing shirts from the musical, but never seen it, or quoting things that are in the movie, but not in the musical. Some girl got on my case in Rent that musical numbers we all in the movie, when no, all the musical numbers were not and that's why I didn't enjoy the movie. I went on how the musical is really like mature and that the movie should of never been made, and if so with at R rating. Anyway, I'm sick of people who like fight for a movie, but have no idea about the musical. Or just all the teen pop kids who make me hate the musical for people over sing the songs and such. That's why I don't want Hairspray turned into a musical movie. It's going to get over done and I love the musical for what it is. I also love the old movie. I just don't like the idea of it being turned into a musical movie. I'm not bashing people for they can't go see theater shows. Trust me..it's rare when I go too. I don't watch a musical movie though and love the musical for I saw the movie. I've never seen Chicago on Broadway, but I did research after the movie and found out a lot of stuff was cut out and then I thought on how a great musical was chopped up for a movie. I know in Hairspray 2 songs are cut out and my favorite song is too! Oh well, I can't stop this. I'm not a theater snob, I just care about theater very much that I just don't want my favorite musical to be whored out by High School musical kids..

Yeah, it can be dissappointing. I've never seen Rent other than in the theater, but I hated how they prettied up "Over the Moon" because that was the one song they shouldn't have. But do you honestly think the musical is being ruined by them turning it into a movie?

Yes, it's different... but it isn't ruining it. Don't be so afraid of change. You don't think it's as good, that's fine. I know Rentheads who loooooooove the movie.

But that is what turns people off to theater, because it does come across as a snobby attitude. You should be happy the movies are going to bring more people into the theater, and if you want to make a carrier in it, then that means more job openings for you!

Just because they cut a song or two out of the musical doesn't mean it's ruined, it means they did the best they could to make it a good movie, to keep it true to the story but bring in ideas that can't be brought into the theater production and still entertain the audience. They aren't trying to replace the musical, they aren't trying to be the musical, they are two seperate entities.

And honestly, don't worry so much about what people think. I have friends who latch onto anything and either they don't give a crap about it or they have to prove they're it's biggest fans, and they'll try to argue with me or tell me about something I introduced them to. That's just the way those people are, and that's their problem that they can't truly appreciate something because they aren't realizing what they're doing. I know I know what it's really about, I know I really like it, why does it matter what they think they know?

I just thought I'd revive this topic a bit since it's a little closer to when the movie is coming out, and my co-workers are finally getting active in it.

We're working on getting swing dancers to come in, though I don't know how exactly she's planning on doing that. And we've got it in the works to bring in some old cars and put them on display. I suggested getting the local civil rights museum to come in, and to get Birmingham on Broadway involved if at all possible, but I have yet to see any results. I also suggested going to Lane Bryant or Catherine's Plus Sizes but we'll see how much they listen to me... after all, I only have the best ideas, understand the musical the most, and am painting a bunch of windows (I've painted Tracy, but she kinda scares me gonk )

Also, we're going to have employees dress up as the characters and I'm going to be dressing up as Tracy, well... if they get an outfit for me. They insist they can find it all at the thrift store, but I'm doubting they can find something from that period in just my size. Now I have to figure out how to get my hair into a beehive whee I'm also forcing my mom to teach me some of the dances so I can do a little bit, but my friend laughed at me as she watched my mom try to teach me the twist and the mashed potato crying Luckily my mom is awesome at these dances (when she remembers them) and so I've probably got one of the best teachers possible. I'm so bad at dancing, though... it's funny to watch me actually trying. My friend and I might film it sometime and I'll post it here xp
