Echo relaxed into the wind rushing through her mane, and tail, under her body, cooling it and drying the sweat. Up here, she was not subject to the silence of the earth below, the eerie soundlessness that was so unnatural for a night. One would think that in the sky, it would be different, as there was no life... but it was so wrong.
The rushing of the clouds, the wind in her ears, and Echo would admit to being something of a romantic, or listening to Scherazade's stories too often. She could imagine that the wind was singing her a sweet song, telling her secrets she did not yet understand, and that the stars were a chorus, singing in sweet harmony.
She fell towards the earth finally, when the water came into sight, plummeting at first like a hawk, wings tucked in closer to her body. She settled onto the ground gracefully, soundlessly, listening to the rushing drumbeat of hooves behind her, and she turned to watch the unicorn rushing up behind her, his hooves churning into the earth, mane flying in the wind.

"It looks like you won, milady." the unicorn called cheerfully. The air truly was a faster method of travel. He smiled, watching her for a long moment. "So, where should we rest, lady?" he inquired, peering about the shore. The river had no small number of trees nearby, but they did not detract from the view of the sky. Above the pair of them, the stars flickered wildly. One of them, as he watched, seemed to dart from it's cradle, shooting across the sky in their direction, soaring over their heads.

She laughed at him. A simple noise, full of no mockery, only joy in her victory. "I won." she agreed. "We are going to rest..." she glanced up and down the river. "Here." she trotted down a ways, to where a rock jutted out into the river, forcing it to wind. Almost like an island, the rock was large enough for both of them to lay out comfortably, without being required to touch unless they desired. And even better, the rock was close to a part of the river that could be gotten out of easily, so if the mare just -happened- to push her companion in....
She gave him a wicked smile. "Well?"

Khalon nodded, inclining his head to the mare. "But of course. Rest for the wicked." he gave her a grin, unaffected by his own tiredness. SHE, however, appeared to have been completely unaffected by their activity. "I suppose it's better when you can feel the breeze, isn't it?" his voice was wry, amused. "None of that nasty sweat getting in your eyes." With Echo, he felt he could let down some of his barriers. She was a lady, yes, but she was also a comrade. It made her MUCH easier for him to deal with. It was... a comfortable friendship. A comfortable... attraction? No, not necessarily. She was lovely, yes, but he'd not be so bold as to think himself... well. THAT was an uncomfortable train of thought. He shifted, attention drifting back to the mare prancing down the stream. "This looks to be a more than adequae resting spot, lady Echo." The stallion gave her a nod of approval, and waited for the mare to settle herself.

She sniffed at him. "I not wicked." she informed him, voice prim. "I good." She tilted her head, glancing over at him out of the corner of her, sidling just a little closer to the black stallion. "Khalon?" she paused for a moment, waiting for the stallion to glance over at her. After a moment, the next phrase came. "Your coat sure does smell." And with that, she forced her body weight into him, attempting to push the stallion over, and into the river.

"No, I suppose you aren't wicked." He agreed with the mare, upon reflection. "I am simply of the opinion that when you're so obviously- yes?" She had interrupted his musings with her innocent-sounding voice saying his name oh-so-sweetly. She really was absolutely- wait, what?
He gave a very unmanly squeak as the mare charged. He could have braced, instinctively moved to counter-attack, fighting back the instinct at the last moment, and as a result, landing rather gracelessly in the freezing water. Luckily it was shallow, and the current was not too bad. His instincts were up, and he was braced for battle now, glancing around furtively to be sure... well, that he had really just got knocked into the river by a mare playing a joke.
It took a few moments for his brain to catch up with his feet. He was on the bank before it really registered, and he was coming after her, intending to shove her in as well. Though... she would likely KNOW he was coming.

She made a startled, squeaking noise, as the stallion's bulk took her into the water. Wait, WHAT?! She was a LADY! She spluttered as she came to the surface, glaring death beams from her eyes. "Khalon!" she staggered out of the water, shaking her mane. It was wet, and very heavy. She made a face, collapsing dramatically on the bank. "Wicked Khalon."

He grinned, shamelessly. She was so much fun to play with. Even if she was quite unladylike at times. He slid closer, nosing at her. "My apologies, sweet Echo. Forgive me my cruel attack? I'll make it up to you by bringing you the sweetest flowers..." He leaned in closer, giving her the widest, most innocent eyes that he could force himself to have.

She smirked at him. “Flowers, Khalon?” She nosed at her legs. No, no, she had plenty of those. What else would the stallion offer, she wondered, if she left him alone long enough? Her lips quirked, and she laughed. A rough sound, almost bitter. She couldn’t even ask the stupid, stupid question. And she couldn’t stop laughing, when he gave her those stupid eyes. Stupid, stupid stallion. Not even when the laughter turned to sudden tears.

He pondered, only sparing a startled look at her laugh and the bump of his shoulder. He wasn’t used to consoling mares. How did he do it? How was he supposed to know?! So he did what he could, leaning in close and resting his nose against the top of her head, nickering softly. “Don’t cry, Echo. No reason to cry. You are doing as well as you can be expected.” There would be silence on his part, consoling, until the sun went down at last. Finis (Please wait for volume 2, to be published September 2007! <3 j/k)
