Surprisingly, despite Sasha’s feminine figure he had a firm handshake as well, and he willingly took Leran’s hand. Still grinning, he stared into Leran’s eyes, giving him the look of a man thoroughly enjoying himself. He was enjoying this form of torture very much. In fact, he would have found it fun if Leran attacked him now. It would give him something else to do, and Sasha believed he could escape it well enough to avoid the perfection-that-is-him getting harmed. Sasha was unwilling, however, to let go of Leran’s hand first without a reason, once again turning something into a competition. If he had no reason to do it, he had no reason not to continue making the boy mad with the handshake. It wasn’t until Leonard Gem had offered him the card that he finally let go, taking the card and smiling at Leran’s father. “Thank you for allowing your boy to work for me. I am sure it will be a great experience for the both of us.”

Mr. Gem nodded, "And for the family as well.... Stop that..."

His last remark was pointedly to Leran, who had stuffed his hands in his pockets, mostly because he was trying NOT to smack both Sasha and his father because...well....he had that feeling of being a lump meat again.

Leran pulled his hands out, "So, when do you want me to start?"

"Can I help too?" She'd been quiet about it, but not purposely sneaky, Aurora had moved from her original point and had walked up behind Sasha, now tugging on his shirt sleeve.

Mr. Gem gave a friendly chuckle.

It may surprise some to know that Sasha was good at handling children, but if one thought about it, it was a rather easy assumption; he dealt with Hansi on a regular basis and from the look of it, Eicca as well, but he was more mature than the insane Hansi. Even if he lost his cool with Hansi at times, he could handle normal, sane people much better. Leran was an exception, but that had more to do with both of their stubbornness and conflicting personalities. It did not help that Sasha found it entertaining to mess with one of Hansi’s favorite people…

“I do not mind your helping out, but I do not know if your family thinks the same way,” he smiled at her—a warm, almost-sincere smile—as he spoke, glancing a few times at Mr. Gem to show he was merely humoring the girl. “Maybe you could find the pesky imps Leran was talking about…” Still smiling, he straightened, for he had bent down slightly while talking to Aurora, and he did not want to be looking up at Leran as he spoke to him. “I do not care exactly when you start as long as you do. Today is even fine with me, possibly even more preferable than later.”

---

As Sasha was speaking of imps, his own little imp was grumbling inside a cabinet, only a slither of light coming in to reveal her displeased face. Her arms were folded over her chest, hair ruffled up slightly as she made inaudible complaints, and her tail limp. Every once in a while it would stick up slightly at a sound, but when she realized it was not her master coming to get her, it was down again. She was told to wait here, closed in one of the cabinets in his shop, to stay out of sight during store hours. She hoped she would get an extra something if she was really good, but it didn’t make waiting any better…

Aurora's eyes lit up, "Oh, it'd be FUN to track down imps and stuff! Daddy, may---" Aurora didn't have to go further than to see her father, still smiling, just slightly shake his head. She lowered her own, looking defeated, but only for a moment, "Well, that's ok, maybe I can visit sometimes! Leran'll sure be here enough for it! In the meantime, I'll read up on imps'n stuff and see what I can find about them and maybe I'll even look up to see if I can find anything else that looks cool for this shop. You have the neatest stuff." Another signal from her father, "Sorry, I tend to talk too much."

Leran rolled his eyes and would have slapped his face at Aurora's comments, except that he still had his father to deal with. Instead he looked at her like she was was an idiot. An expression he'd had plenty of practice with recently with people like Hansi and Russom hanging around. That ended when Mr. Gem decided he took too long to answer Sasha.

"Today would be fantastic, I imagine it would be just enough time to get him oriented. And maybe Aurora and I can spend some father daughter time around town?" Mr. Gem went from Sasha to a wink in Aurora's direction.

Staying at the shop fled the girl's mind. "Oh, yes! That would be awesome!"

"Hey, wait, don't I have to fill out paperwork and stuff before I start? Make it OFFICIAL and all?' Leran demanded.

Mr. Gem waved his hand, "Orientations are made for that. You have everything you need."

Leran now openedly glared at his father, but that was that. They were about to head out and he was going to be STUCK with these maniacs. Life could not. Could NOT. Get worse....

It was not until Mr. Gem and Aurora were out the door that Sasha could really grin at Leran, eyeing him with arms folded over his chest, basking in the enjoyment he had just received. “If you want to know the truth, I have not prepared anything special for you to do in my shop. I saw no reason to do such a thing, for I believe I can simply have you take over one of my jobs. Do you think you could be…a salesman?” He paused for a moment, and finally the grin was gone. Instead, he was staring at him, emotions blank except for a serious air. He did not wait long for reply, continuing on only after a few moments, “I do not know if you know how to work a cash register or not, but I do know Lucas can. He cannot, however, successfully talk or interact with customers. He is too solemn and blank to do anything, and he always looks to me for the answers. The repetitive tasks of the register suit him.” Once again, a slight pause, but this time he waited longer, allowing time for his arms to drop to his side and glance in Lucas’ direction. “I believe you can actually do it, though. To be a salesman, it takes charisma and a quick-wit, and stubbornness can come in handy, too, if one can push the right way. Memorization is helpful, and intelligence is not needed…” And this time, he paused, but he did not continue. The edges of his mouth had perked up slightly; the shopkeeper was obviously enjoying himself.

Leran's mind ticked away at Sasha's glance, at his words. He thought of so many different ways he could take it, and if he'd had his older sister's skills, he would have taken it all as a compliment. There was a way to do that. But he didn't, and he was determined to hate this job and do what he could to make it impossible on the man without actually being able to get into more trouble... Which presented a problem, because he was still convinced Sasha could voodoo him into oblivion if he so chose.

Leran took too long to reply. A too curious and too timid Russom finally bolted from the place he'd been at, a quick streak across the floor, and in a flash was up on top of Leran's shoulder. Speaking also rapidly, Russom started to make his demands and points known, "How's he goin' t'sell anything if he doesn't know what it is? He needs an apprenticeship! It's not HIS fault he's an ignorant fool! Is it, now, my own?"

"I am NOT..."

"Why'd I ask you? But then, I guess he could sell to other ignorant fools, but I won't have him to stay in the masses!"

Leran gave up then and there, "Whatever, just let me do whatever and keep out of my hair about it!"

Russom, ever the literal one, took one small side-step away from Leran's head. "Y'know," he weedled to Sasha now, "Him knowin' more lets him converse with the better customers, 'nd better customers mean more for you."

"Give me a collar and call me Rover," Leran grumbled.

Russom gave Leran an irritated look.

“Please reframe from saying that last bit around Hansi because he will take it literally, and I do not think it would be good for business. Not only is it not professional, but customers may think it really is your name.” Sasha smiled this time; he did not grin, but one could not really say it was a sincere smile. He was merely falling back into his salesman role, for he had to continue playing the part in front of his customers. “Unfortunately, the only person I know who knows about all the items in the store and has free time happens to be Hansi. He helped make or come up with many of the ideas here, and I am sure he could explain it in layman’s terms, for I am not sure I can.” Sasha turned away from Leran, gliding over to Lucas, where whispered something in the man’s ear. If one tried to read Lucas’ face, he would find no answer; his face remained emotionless, and he did not even bother to move closer to Sasha or even make any movements at all to give any hints. After Sasha was through, he once again smiled towards Leran, but for all we know it was directed at Russom, for he found the imp and his actions quite hilarious.

Geez. Leran would NOT enjoy anything Sasha said... he wouldn't, which was rather the pity, because he would have otherwise loved playing word games with the man. They were both good at it, and he usually made fast friends with people like that.

But he wouldn't admit that to himself even, and instead continued to look at Sasha like he thought he was the worst thing on the planet.

And so, left again with the conflicting inner battle, Russom again beat Leran to the speaking, "One of those most educated places around 'nd you've that for a master." Russom sighed, shaking his head, "Haveta do what you haveta do though, do---"

"Did you just call Hansi a master of something?"

"Who's talkin' to you?"

"And he's concerned about professionalism! This is the MOST unprofessional, lunatic asylum I've---"

"That's 'cause you don't know better, 'nd it's not an asylum, though anywhere can be lunatic. It's the price you haveta pay sometimes."

"Yeah, great... I'll hold off on paying that one, or getting the whatever thing it is that makes you pay it..."

"Who'd wanta buy your sense off you?"

Leran sighed. "Great! Now I'm getting bested by something that isn't supposed to even exist. And that fact alone is point well enough proven!"

Russom sighed and shook his head. "That mentality's exactly what I mean! What would you have him to start with?"

The fact that Leran would not like anything the shopkeeper said made sense, for Sasha enjoyed back-handed compliments, secretly slipping rude remarks in the middle of nice comments. This never worked with Hansi, who was too naïve to really pay attention, and if he did, he would probably take them as compliments, anyways. He would have really enjoyed it more if Leran was willing to play word games with him.

“I do have to admit this place is not normal, but that is the whole point. Hansi pushed his way in here on his own, though, so you cannot blame me for him,” Sasha replied as he pushed himself off the table, leaving Lucas to continue his repetitive tasks. “I cannot teach you anything right now, but you could stand over there near the jewelry section. Even though you know nothing about them at the moment, I think jewelry has enough appeal to women without the extra information. Lucas, please proceed with your orders.” Sasha smiled once more, nodding at Lucas as he picked up the phone and began to dial. “Hansi should be here soon unless he is busy, and he rarely is busy. I need to go make some arrangements for later, but I should be back before his entrance…” Without saying anything more, he glided over toward the back room, only closing the door after he was sure Hansi has picked up the phone.

"I'm going to take inventory," Russom muttered to Leran as Sasha disappeared. He would make sure this whole venture was worthwhile.

Leran just shrugged at Sasha's words. If nothing else, he was learning how to bite his tongue. But that was just because Sasha was creepy.

Leran sat down and pulled a gameboy out his pocket. That, at least, he had managed to slip out on his father and, once again, on the first day, he wasn't willing to make too many waves....

That would have been fruitless, Leran had just put up his gameboy and started wandering around replacing objects around the store just for amusement's sakes... Sticking some kind of claw out of some animal's head, for example, was more appealing.... And then finding red objects and other 'body parts' to litter around it... He was quite enjoying his game of "create the scene AFTER the knight's been around" when some people wandered in.

Leran waved, "Heya, welcome to Bellus Puppa, shop of rare and exotic beauties, like beaten up dragons!"

The lady blinked at him, but her boyfriend started grinning.

"Oh, or there's jewelry over there from the dragon's hoarde. they have special woven spells to assure they won't get stolen." Leran was so cheerful about the story he'd cooked up in his head that joking about magic didn't even phase him at this point.

And when they started asking serious questions, then Leran REALLY got into the spirit of things. Oh, that necklace? That was from a sunken Spanish ship that the pirates had been over-zealous about. And he could prove it by pointing out other artifacts that came from it too. Oh, yes, they dealt with the ship hunters out there. Of course they did, it was a booming industry, if you knew how to do it right. That along with grabbing artifacts from archeologial sites... Oh, well, there were some ~boring~ things, like those handmade items from various third world countries. Yeah, they bought them off of people who made them for a living. What was that used for? Eh.. it was a... good luck charm, yeah! To ward off evil spirits. It looked scary enough to ward off anything, didn't it?

The lady asked questions out of genuine interest and her boyfriend asked questions out of amusement. When they left, he had probably had the most interesting anniversary shopping men ever had. Plus Leran was thoroughly amused...And he'd sold stuff to someone who'd believed his stories, even if her boyfriend took all the comments with a disbelieving grin.

Leran was mighty proud of himself. This might be FUN if he could keep this up...

Russom not so much... as soon as customers had disappeared, he super-ran up to the boy, tugging on hair and ears and hissing about his stupidity and the lies and misleadings and... Oooh, how COULD he!!

Leran shrugged, "So what, I made some sells. Sasha won't care."

Russom blinked, then shrugged, and ran off again to continue taking inventory. He didn't have an argument for that one.

It was a good thing Sasha was no where near the door while Leran was making the sells, or things could have been bad. Of course, it could have been even worse with Hansi around, but that’s because he would cause trouble, and that would make Sasha even angrier. The one that was in the shop, however, was Lucas, who quietly did his job while the customers were still in the store. After they left, though, he turned slightly to Leran, but he did not look at him but rather off to the side. Even if he was looking at the boy his look was so blank one would know he really wasn’t looking at him, so it would not matter either way. “Please be truthful,” Lucas mumbled, monotone as he spoke. One might guess he was just repeating something Sasha had said, most likely to Hansi, and this would probably right. With that being said, he turned back around and stared off into the distance.

Pixie was not happy. Not only was she cramped up in the upper cabinet, now she could hear him. ‘Him’ being Leran, and ‘him’ being the boy she thought was too close to Sasha. Of course, this did not necessarily mean anything, for Pixie was a jealous imp, and anyone that got close to her Sasha was overstepping their bounds. Now he was even in the shop, and he brought his imp, too. Why was she stuck in here while he was allowed to roam free? Why him? Why that imp? She was better than that! She was a self-proclaimed pixie, and Sasha just locked her up. She was going to be a bad Pixie, yes she was. She was going to show those two jokers who was boss. She pushed open the cabinet doors, tail curled tight, and she snarled, alien eyes glaring.

And then she stopped. She had forgotten to make the rest of the plan.

Leran turned and stared at Lucas. And HE was the robot of the place. "What? There a problem with having some fun in all this mess? It's not like the BELIEVED me....well, maybe the doltz of a girl did, but the guy caught on." Leran shook his head, "I don't think I could ever go for beauty over brains like that..... Shut UP, Russom..." The imp was no where to be seen, but Leran knew the words about to be spoken anyway.

Leran wandered back to continue making his After Battle with a Knight scene. He didn't much think making up stories was a problem, but he'd already figured he was going to catch some words for this. It was already there though, and it would be more amusing than anything else...

....

Russom, of course, was being good-imp, and continuing to try to memorize what all was in the store. He couldn't very well educate his human without knowing what was around. He really needed to find a way to talk to that Hansi-guy without getting taped up. Ugh... Or maybe he'd just try educating on his own...

If Pixie knew what Leran was doing, she would have, well, been really angry, but she probably wouldn’t have done anything. She may not like him, and she may growl at him, but when it all comes down to it, she was a coward. Instead, she would pick on someone her own size. Unfortunately for Russom, that was currently him.

Along with her heightened senses, it seems she also has the ability to climb really well, or maybe she could just stick to things, for she scurried down the counter, hiding amongst the items as she made her way toward Russom, crawling over or under anything in her way. Upon arriving at Russom, she had the urge to jump on him right there, but she didn’t want to leave any evidence that she had disobeyed Sasha, so she would just settle with vocal complaints…

If you counted growling as vocal, which she did as she approached Russom from behind. “What are you doing?” she snapped. “This store is my master’s, and whatever is his is mine, so you’re in my store.”
PostPosted: Wed May 23, 2007 11:39 am

"Is that true?" Russom had turned around when he'd heard the growling behind him, and now just considered her words as literally as he did everyone else's, "I checked in with Sasha already, so you should have no concerns."

Why should she? If the store was her master's, and thus it belonged also to her, then the other end must be that when talking to one, it was like talking to both; therefore, he had no reason to check in with or worry about Pixie or her jealousies. He had no idea why she would be upset!

Russom turned back around to look at everything in the shop.... It was really annoying and hard to do so with Leran moving things around. What an idiot! "You are very fortunate to have Sasha as your master." He would let Pixie try to figure out the implications of that about Leran.
