When Maddy Sakamoto woke up stranded on a beach, the only thing that ran through her mind was, "Oh no, not again."

This was not to say that she was used to battling the high seas for her very life, catching hold of driftwood, and sailing to uncharted islands. On the contrary, she had never been the type to go searching for adventure. Maddy's problem could be summed up with this: adventure tended to find her on its' own, and she just had to deal with it when it came, no matter how tiresome she found it.

As she came into consciousness, she found it amusing that she felt before she saw:

The crusty film of hardened salt over her sticky, rubbed-raw face. Clumps of her hair clinging and cloying at her skin or around her face and knotted in itself, too. The sting of sand exfoliating her already burnt and angry skin.

She sat up as well as she could, and peeked open her eyes.

Faster than she'd expected it to, the blur of her sorroundings became sharp. She saw the sun in the corner of the sky, and yet still reasonably overhead. Curiously, she looked towards her feet. The shadows stretched from her legs and her torso towards the trees at the beach's edge.

In those sunset shadows, her eye caught a shadow moving -- one that was not her own.

She blinked the salt out of her eyes, and then it was gone...

"Why me?"

Sighing softly, Hayden continued picking his way slowly through the dense section of forest. Most of the island was sparsely forested at best...except for this section it seemed. So, of course, instead of sending one of the usual guards, he had been chosen to trek to the far-side of the island and battle his way through the 'jungle.' Without a Pokemon, as usual. Why in the world was he the only guard they refused to assign a Pokemon? Not even one! He knew several guards who had been there for less time and had numerous Pokemon for protection. He had yet to be granted one.

"I swear...they all hate me. They're out to get me..."

Hayden continued muttering to himself, practically growling as a brier-encrusted limb whipped across his cheek. "Dammit all...for the love of Lugia, why me?!?"

Nearly exhausted from his own pent-up anger and frustration, as well as the trek through the dense forest, Hayden was ready to collapse by the time he finally reached the beach. 'About time...alright, security said they registered life signs around here somewhere. Wonder who or what was unlucky enough to wash up here of all places...?' Quietly, Hayden surveyed the beach before noting a splash of color that didn't seem to belong on the quiet shore.
