I love my piccolo. Which is really my younger sisters, however, she doesn't play it. Ever. So I stole it from her and use it. mrgreen I love it, it's so cute. I think the trick is to think of the notes as an octave higher, which they technically are. Just don't think about sounding the same as other flutes or other instruments, since you probably won't. Just relax and let it flow.

Ask around in the flute section thread? I really don't know what to tell you, our piccolos are junk.

When you play the piccolo, make sure you have a small opening to your mouth so the note your playing sounds clear. And don't think your going to hear your piccolo in a concert. Trust me, I played piccolo for a year, it wasn't fun.

I've been playing the piccolo for almost 2 years now. The high notes can be difficult to reach at first. You have to blow a bit harder and make the airstream a bit smaller, also, practice a lot! Good luck! blaugh

I love playing my piccolo. There is another girl who's been playing the piccolo longer than I have but I'm still better at it. I love the high notes...they're soo much fun. She can't even hit the high F. GRRR!!! I get really nervous too when I play in a concert because it's so loud!!

Practice. It took me a week of nonstop playing to learn picc fully.
If you play flute in band, what's most important is that you can handle switching. Switching is a pain. Usually your tone on one instrument is good while the other is horrible, so practice switching.

Yay piccolo! I've been playing for about 2 years, I got it halfway through freshman year. I had to buy my own, and I love it! My BD doesn't like freshman playing piccolo, but I brought it in anyway and he put up with it since I went out and bought it and all. Now I'm the best picc at my school, it's pretty awesome. mrgreen I am the 'principle picc', in his words.
Anyway, yeah, PRACTICE. Especially switching. Playing one or the other at one time isn't nearly as much of a problem as going back and forth quickly. And don't be nervous about sticking out. Piccolo just puts an edge on the top of the band, which is really nice, but most people won't hear it if they aren't listening for it. Be proud! Piccolo is AMAZING!
